A Common Language

I really like this piece Mr. Sefton linked to in the early morning thread. The author has a great observation as to why the left's 24/7 anti-Trump jihad is falling mostly on deaf ears. It's because

...most of their stuff is shouted out in language which doesn’t mean much to the natives of Brooklyn, Peoria or Biloxi. Not because they don’t know the definition of the words they’re hearing but because they rarely, very rarely, use them. I spent thirty years in manufacturing, I go to gun club meetings, American Legion meetings, I chat at the post office in the morning, I go to church and church affairs and have friends. But in all these years of mixing, I’ve only heard the word 'fascist' used by a man railing against his wife. Ditto for 'misogynist,' 'xenophobe,' 'Islamophobe' or 'homophobe'.

Contrast this with

The simple Anglo-Saxon terms Donald Trump used to describe Hillary – “liar,” “corrupt,” “crooked,” “nasty,” resonated with middle America where the East and West Coast Liberal inside-the-bubble-talk that Hillary and her advocates used to describe Trump drew a blank. And so went the election.

Exactly. If I want to insult some douche-y guy, I'll say 'you homo', not 'you homophobe'.

And he points out that the epithet 'nazi' pretty much gets used to describe a person who is extremely dogmatic about one thing or another.

For example, years ago when my children were young, Mrs. Muse and I ran across the La Leche League, a group that promotes breast-feeding of infants. And while that's great and and healthy and all, some of their members can get pretty strident about it, and after awhile I got tired of their constant harangues that implied that if a mother wasn't breast-feeding her babies, she must be a bad person. So I started referring to them as "nipple nazis".

But I never called them "literally Hitler."

Open Thread, heh, maybe I can set a record for most time stomped.

To add another, I'd be really curious about the future of movies/movie theaters.

I think the enitre tv spectrum has been changed forever by Netlfix and changing viewing habits, and I see movies going the same way as well.

I know many people are of the mindset 'why pay $15 for a movie when I can get it, at most, for $1 a few months later.'

Netflix is now going to push hard with their movies. I don't think big tent pole releases in homes is that far off.

Non-ficiton writers do it all the time. They use unnecessarily large words, and typically put them in long, complex sentences that are hard to understand.

People will slog through the book and proclaim how brilliant the author is when, in fact, they're actually bad writers. But because they use big words, people are superficially impressed and proud that they finished this buy buy this person who uses big words and long sentences.

But in the end, they are bad writers and life is short. So I don't read books written by people who don't have a grasp of the English language.

88 I think Trump's decision to not use the Left's language not only made him understandable to a greater audience, but at least to me, it signaled that he did not buy into the left's BS at all.

He rejected their opinions, their values, and - gasp! - even their language (which naturally shapes the debate, such as "pro-life" vs. "anti-abortion).

I LOVE that he does not use progressive-speak.

I also think that this is one of the reasons the Left was so hysterical about Trump from the get-go. His rejection of their language indicated that he was not going to be easily cowed into negotiating/compromising with them.

If it is it has to come back slightly changed in an unpredictable way.

That's a shortcoming of where we now stand in Game of Thrones. Jon Snow got himself unkilled, but so far he is just back to being Jon Snow. You need some wrinkles in the fabric if you've been brought back to life.

There was a Lazarus Pit in Batman that could bring someone back from the dead, but they didn't come back exactly as they were. (I forget who went into it, it was some supergirl's dad).

That's how it's done. Jon Snow must pay a price.

Don't try to be sly (like the times candidate Obama rubbed his nose with his middle finger while talking about his opponent Hillary) or condescending about groups of regular people who are on the wrong side of the political divide.

BTW the first time I was impressed with Trump was when he came to Michigan and went into a venue of natural Clinton supporters: a church in Flint. I don't think even my preferred candidate would have gone into that venue and risk making himself a target of so much bile. When he the pastor chided him for criticizing Hillary Clinton, Trump said just said, "Okay" and dropped that subject. Even when he was heckled, he acted with a lot of class and listened to people.

And correct me if I'm wrong, but Trump criticized people in the ranks of political power - politicians and
journalists - but I don't recall him dumping on teachers, autoworkers, and other
folk more likely to vote Democrat.

155 The simple Anglo-Saxon terms Donald Trump used to describe Hillary – “liar,” “corrupt,” “crooked,” “nasty,” resonated with middle America

This guy makes a valid point -- one that has been well-known for years, actually -- but be blunders big-time because most of the examples he cites aren't Anglo-Saxon:

corrupt -- from Latin
nasty -- from Greek
crooked -- from Old Norse (not Anglo-Saxon)

Even "Liar" is technically from German and is not really a true Anglo-Saxon word.

His essay would have been much better if he had simply said "blunt" or "direct" words, and/or cited actual Anglo-Saxon words.

The most famous Anslo-Saxon-vs.-Romance examples, famous among linguists, is that "copulate" has no emotional impact, but "fuck" does, and "defecate" elicits blank stares, but "shit" gets and emotional response.

I ask the horde for help:

Recently I watched a B-movie chick flick from 1938 (!) called "Girls' School," about rich snooty girls at an elite private school bullying the one poor girl.

The lead character is played by the '30s actress Anne Shirley, who had really striking looks:

http://deskback___.com/anne-shirley/

But what drove me crazy throughout the film, and still does to this day, is that she really really resembles a modern-day contemporary actress, to the point of being her doppelganger, but I can't remember the name of the modern actress. I can see her face, but an't conjure her name.

So, I ask you all: What modern day actress does Anne Shirley look like?

http://deskback___.com/anne-shirley/

The closest I could come is the obscure Indian actress Sheetal Sheth, who does indeed look very much like Anne Shirley:

https://www.pinterest.com/isishernandez19/sheetal-sheth/

But that's not who I was thinking of.

The next closest is Emmy Rossum. Is this who I am thinking of?:

https://www.pinterest.com/charleycrute/emmy-rossum/

...or is it Olivia Thirlby? Driving me nuts.

Meadows and his clown show want 100%. That's not how it works even though they've been telling people that for 8 years

Now they have to actuallly govern and don't want to let it slip they were full of shit.

Now Trump is nowhere near that level of expertise, but the focus on non-egg-head sounding, older, and shorter, vocabulary words when he speaks is a bit of a gift for him and does work better in flyover country.

As it happens, I'm reading a book by Churchill now (The World Crisis: The Aftermath) and have read several others of his in the History of the English Speaking People series. He has a way with words, but he also tends to use some rather odd syntax, apparently for effect. Sometimes you have to read the sentence twice just to line up all the grammatical parts.

233 I bet in game theory losing three times is one mathematically significant sign to redirect one's efforts. That's just intuition and it's built into game rules all over the place, and even good advice about persisting. (Maybe in the primordial oceans you had three tries before the megalomondodont swam up behind you. I just see signs of it being baked into the she persisted cake.)

Three strikes you are out.
Try Try Try again, after that, maybe you're throwing good after bad and ought to rethink your tries, unless Richard Gere is there to throw you over the top.
Third time is the charm because the third time you either succeed BING! which gets remembered, or you start to squint and approach from a different angle and let the old strategy go and don't remember it so much.

Beginning, middle, end. That's how the montage works.

Wolfen, w/ Albert Finney (book: kind of dull)

282 Mrs. Refugee was struggling to breastfeed Refugee-ette. We went to see Nurse Practicioner at Pediatrician office. She watched the process and nodded. "I see the problem." She then got a little nervous. She looked at the door - which was closed lest somebody walk in on undressed Mrs. Refugee. She then dug into a cupboard and rummaged around and pulled out a silicone gizmo that fit over a nipple. Refugee-ette enthusiastically started nursing. Much joy. Practicioner then gave us a dead serious look and said " If anyone from La Leche League contacts you, you MUST NOT TELL THEM YOU ARE USING THIS! "

283 The lactofascism can go both ways. You've got the pro breast feeding militant types, and then you've got the anti breast feeding in public or any mention of it types who are just as bad.

It didn't use to be that way. Infant formula wasn't invented until early in the 20th century. Before that, which means for nearly all human history, infants had to be breast fed or they would die.

It was no big deal. Either way. My grandmother mentioned how when she was a little girl, and this would been circa 1910, women regularly breast fed their babies in church. Nobody thought a damn thing about it. Baby would cry. Mama would, *discreetly*, feed it, right there in the sanctuary.

And nobody thought one thing about it.

Because of formula, it's become optional, and thus all the hang ups about it have developed.

The Shining, Stanley Kubrick's attempt at a horror film? Puh-leeze. King himself once said, "I consider I handed Stanley Kubrick a live hand grenade . . . and he heroically threw his body on top of it."

310 At the hospital, I noticed they have these special "lactation lounges". Rooms dedicated to breast feeding and I assume pumping. It's getting ridiculous.

The trouble is, again, because of formula, making breast feeding optional. Breasts are "dual use". They have a sexual purpose, and the lactation purpose. And yes, the former is hard wired, contrary to femiNazi bullshit. That's is proven now.

But, by making the latter function optional, we've entirely concentrated on the sexual function, forgetting about the other one. And that's why you get people who get so in a tiff about it.

315 25 years ago it was a different world. I can remember have to sneak off to pump at lunch time and the growling of my co-workers that any morning or afternoon pumpingwasn't counted as a "smoke-break" extending my work-day. (despite me being an exempt employee who worked at least 50+ hours a week and usually 60+.) As if the activity was optional and recreational.

One or two would make cracks about the little bag that held my pump, a little pink zippered bag, and were offended I didn't have a bag for the bag.

It wasn't easy, but I figure the young singles had their turn soon enough, The the pumping was necessary just to abate pain and keep my dress dry, which they probably had no idea about.

316 The value of a college degree, a BA in general depends on the person who holds the degree.

My son, obtained his degree in 2004 from a NESCAC school, a BA in Rhetoric and Communications.

Left home the following fall and moved to the left coast. Got himself an entry level position with a tobacco company. Worked his ass off, got promoted within his territory. Worked his ass off some more and got promoted to a new territory in the mid-west.

Just promoted again, a survivor of a very competitive environment.

He's not a "math wiz", but he knows his numbers. Computer literate, but not at a programming level. Conversant with hard science where it assists his hobbies.

What he does do is read voraciously, write exceeding well, and argue logically. And all these skills come from a liberal arts background. That's what he needed and what worked for him.

My other son, not so much...he's a math wiz and that's been his focus. Obtaining a BA would have driven him crazy and wasted his time.

TLR - Success comes from within. The man makes the degree, not the degree making the man.
