Overnight Open Thread (18 Mar 2017(

Fed's rate hikes are really a bullish validation of Trumponomics. Oh don't say that to Obama fluffers. They think Trump has inherited this recent rise in economic numbers. They won't want to believe this.

And the fact is, the economy was losing steam going into this year, before Donald Trump stepped into the Oval Office. Yes, it's true, since Trump was elected the job-market has perked up, with February's 235,000 new payroll positions a pleasant upside surprise. And business confidence is soaring.

But Obama-era economic growth rates provide no reason at all for rate hikes.

In the fourth quarter, Obama's last as president, real GDP grew just 1.9%, which equaled the mediocre pace set for the entire year and for all of Obama's presidency.

Video Games

Give me a break. Why I'm giving 'Mass Effect: Andromeda' a hard pass: It's more of the same colonialism.

A more realistic beef with this game is here. Mass Effect: Andromeda's weird animations won't get fixed with day-one patch. Although, part of that problem could be this. A cosplayer with no video game experience was the lead facial animator.

Chris Evans

It must be so hard to be this brave in Hollywood. Chris Evans is ready to fight. Good luck with that chump. Just so you know, I won't be going to any of your movies.

Chuck Berry

Damn. Chuck Berry passed away today at the age of 90.

Guns

Might be a good time to start gun shopping. How Donald Trump shot the gun industry in the gut.

Long Hair

Real-life Rapunzel has more than 4 pounds of hair. I'd hate to have that shampoo bill.

RS-25 Engine Test

Privilege Tax

Haha, um no. A proposal has been making its way through the social justice sewer system to have white people pay a 5% privilege tax. How about a dumbassery tax?

Taxes and Work

I thought this was self evident. CBO analyst: Higher taxes and government programs decrease incentive to work.

Directly influenced? Not a chance. This is disregarding lyrics, too. Musically he "influenced" it, the way he impacted everything in pop/rock. But, through many degrees of separation.

so they say the criminals go to jail and "paid their debt to society"

Really? Why does it cost taxpayers $30K per year to keep them? Whatever ills they brought to society don't magically go away just cuz they did some time. They were punished, they didn't "pay" anything. It cost us to punish them, and they probably come out worse than they went in, maybe even became jihadist.

they seem to have the language backwards. the WASPy heritage built the country most everyone wants to come to. That took training up a lot of kids in the right ways, and even losing some of those kids in battle. They fought to break free from pope and king (or any such tyranny).

The cultural Marxists, on the other hand, work to tear all that down. And all these PC turkeys think a free ride based on trashing traditional America is groovy. But whitey is finally laughing in their face and calling them out for the racists and bigots they truly are.

99 I got the EA Origin Access and have been playing ME:A. Yeah a couple of the facial animations are bad. But that's kind of funny/shoulder shrug. From what I've played combat is ok. I miss Paragon/Renegade interrupts. Haven't even gotten to any of their new interrupts. Going around a planet/level is much closer to Mass Effect 1 than ME2 or 3 though. Galactic exploration might be kind of annoying with the animation between each planet/asteroid playing each time.

Posted by: Puddleglum at March 18, 2017 10:15 PM (X3MK1)

Neither Spanish Hip-Hop or Rap is particularly interesting to me.

I think it is because English poetry is based on the foot and meter, and hip-hop and rap rely on shifting rhythm to keep them entertaining, and can take advantage of inner patterns of the various forms of feet to alter the patterns within the meter, and Spanish poetry is based on syllabic counts, so it can shift, but feels more repetitive and less flexible.

And that is odd, because the African influenced Caribbean drum rhythms are very complex and shifting.

(The Spanish modernist movements did experiment with foot-based prosody, but I don't remember much coming of it, outside of some of Federico Garcia Lorca's work)

Hillary was the slow death march on their plotted course to global governance. Trump interrupted that, along with Brexit and Frexit ... so now media and the left are going insane trying to drive their loonies into mass hysteria and riot.

But certainly there is now a better chance of turning the death march around. The rebels have broken ranks, and now the RINOs are having to reveal they too want to enforce the death march. They too are globalists.

136 Is there a good quick guide to How To Mass Effect If Ur Dum out there somewhere?

I played KOTOR 1 and 2 and they seem to be pretty similar, but I got an XBONE last year and downloaded ME (original) and I'm not doing that great. KOTOR was pretty straightforward - here are things that you hit other things with, here are things that you shoot at other things, and here are your inevitable Jedi skills because of course you're a Jedi. Keep buffing someone on your team in crate-opening, another in computer breaking, and Bob's yer movva's bruvva.

ME is similar, but has some major differences, and I cannot be bothered to micromanage all of the characters' kit because Glorfnax has a pistol specialty so he'd do more damage with a rusty Iver-Johnson .32 than with the Kill-o-tron BrainMelter X500 rifle that does 20 times the damage on paper.

They reduced that down a little bit in later games. You didn't have 12 skill trees that you are putting experience points into. And they each only carry 2 weapon types instead of all of them. I just always gave characters the best weapons and armor available in ME1, you're eventually to the point where you don't have to give it that much focus.

Sounds like "dilute calico". We adopted the cleverly-named Girlcat back when I was in high school, and she lives with my sister now, over 20 (!) years later.

http://stoatnet.org/girlcat.jpg

It isn't a super picture of her coat coloration, mostly because she's retired and no longer has to care what people think about her grooming and hygiene. Do elderly cats become people ladies?

220 I am working under the assumption that the rate hike is just another deep state attack on a Republican President.

By that, I do not mean that interest rates should not be much higher than they are... they should have been raised long ago (hell they never should have been lowered as they were to a zero effective rate). I attribute most of the increase in stock prices over the last 8 or 9 years to mal-investment caused by the combination of the Fed pumping money into the economy like they were drunken sailors on perpetual shore leave while at the same time acting as if money was free and the feckless federal government passing law after law (and regulation after regulation) that pretty much guaranteed only a fool would invest in anything productive that could be taken away by the government.

The timing of this rate hike that should have happened YEARS ago (and the not so coincident action of starting to pull "excess liquidity" out of the market tells me that they are trying to inhibit growth just when it might start to take off.

I've got a pair of what are technically pajama bottoms (but don't look it) that I wear sometimes to run errands. I draw the line at slippers, though.

In the early 80's my sister and I used to steal my Dad's brand-new boxer shorts, sew the front slit up, and wear them as regular shorts (baggy and sitting low on the hips) over our panties or bathing suit bottoms. Paired with a t-shirt and flip-flops, super comfy. This was around the time everybody cut off the tops of their sweatshirts to wear them off the shoulder.

So you have your cheap mic plugged in, then you cut off the microphone part so its just a wire, and will no longer work for all you paranoid types.

They might get some audio from my cel phone, but the video would be awfully disappointing to 'em.

I carry it in my pocket, and if it's in the car, it's stuffed down into the center console.

Thrilling video, that.

Fact is, if work didn't require smart fone functionality, I'd go back to a simple flip fone.

Hell, if I could get a digital cel phone with a rotary dial, I'd call that about right, I think.

He came and helped her find a card that worked. It seemed clear they were getting all the cards they could, probably signing up their dog and kids, and maxing them out.

It is all done to stimulate the welfare state economy and buy votes. They could easily put limits on what specific foods can be purchased with EBT cards. The UPC codes would be easy to manage, maybe put little blue stars on the available foods. But the Dems are buying votes, not managing the system for efficiency.

I'm not doubting your story, but I've always wondered how exactly people pull this kind of thing off. I had to present lots of documentation in person to be eligible, and even then, it's just a monthly allowance. It'll get you through if you stick to staples - rice, beans, cheese, canned vegetables and soup, and some meat. Little luxuries once in a while, if you budget right, like a bag of chocolates. It's not a buy everything free card.

I guess if you work up a scheme to eat at a shelter every day for lunch and mooch what you can from a food bank, maybe you can save the SNAP and splurge, but that seems like a lot more work than actually trying to find work.

Many of those earlier R&B songs had the saxophone as the lead instrument. Maybe Chuck Berry's contribution was making the electric guitar front and center in rock music.

And of course, his recording of "Johnny B. Goode" is now beyond the heliopause and sailing out into the galaxy, contained in the record of Earth sounds carried by Voyager 1 & 2.

I remember a SNL Weekend News Update skit around the time the Voyagers launched. Apparently we received a transmission from the aliens which, when decoded, said, "Send more Chuck Berry".

And, no, I shouldn't be that flip because you're correct.

If we're going to have a permanent system of welfare, it should be a set of limited programs that interlock and depend on the success of each other, rather than the scatter-shot, multi-government mess we have.

The most fundamentally dysfunctional element of our entitlement mess is the fact that it has never been easier to perform labor for an enterprise. 30 years ago you had to go to a factory, to an office, to some place to perform work.

Not the case anymore. You have 'ten keeds and baybays'? Ok, here's your assignment for the next week, check and food dependent.

The one at 1:30 am on Thursday morning? It went fine. It launched a communications satellite, Echostar 23, to geosynchronous transfer orbit.

This time they didn't attempt to recover the first stage. The flight profile demanded maximum performance from the first stage, so there wasn't enough fuel remaining for a landing.

IMAO, there were two types of comics: Funny ones and 'serious' ones. My favorite 'serious' one was The Phantom. A comic that became a life goal was Andy Capp. A character who plays pool, throws darts, drinks pints and ignores his wife. When I finally bought my own set of darts (to play in bars and drink pints), I just knew Andy Capp would be proud.

Cameras are (relatively) easy to block. BUT IT's SOUND that's the real spy.

I had a headset - stereo ear + mic - that had gone bad. I took the plug, cut off the rest, and plugged that into the cell. Did NOT NOT NOT cut off the mic as anticipated. (Ominous basso music)

Pretty sure it was surplused out in late '45 as a new-in-box truck. Served as a rural fire truck for Yakima County, Washington. Then sold to a local orchard and fitted with a flatdeck and used to haul crates of apples out of the orchard.

no amount of pointing out that they were unhappy listening to either Jeff Beck or Jimmy Page (maybe both) play the song could dissuade the children...

370 * brandy really kicks in *

Twenty-one years ago yesterday, I published my first webpage. MindfulWebworks has been a thing since. Not much of a thing, but a thing. The web's best-kept secret, as I like to say.

In the last month... website and hardware problems.

My web host said my database was 2x the size limit. They shut down my site.

What, I said? Looks like 1/2 the limit to me.

Oh, said techies, that wasn't the problem - you have too many records.

What, I said? That wasn't in the rules! How does that affect anything?

Oh, never mind, they said, it's the connection string. You can pay for our techies to fix that.

Whatever. $30 later, the website is back up, but I have no clue what went wrong in the first place, nor whether it might happen again tomorrow.

Meanwhile, the 2yo tablet has decided I don't need touchscreen, speakers, or other basic functions. Hardware meltdown. That was my main life support.

And now, the ol' XP desktop, so important to me, has taken to freezing up randomly. Could be fine for hours. Could lock up during bootup. Looks like a RAM problem.

Basically, this old mindfulguy is out of the webworking business for the time being. With no other side of the time being in sight.

Interesting times.

If you can wrangle enough uptime to burn a CD or a bootable USB stick, you can run memtest86 which can at least prove or disprove the RAM thing. Also... XP hasn't been getting security patches for a long time. Upgrading isn't free, but I wouldn't keep anything important on an XP install nor keep one connected to the internet for too long.

375 Fed's rate hikes are really a bullish validation of Trumponomics.

Not really. The Fed was waiting for the first non-democrat (and white for a real bonus) to be in the White House in order to finally let go of the insanity of zero interest rates (or even the absolutely ludicrous negative interest rate bullshit) and to finally begin to unwind their balance sheet (which are both going to cause such economic and monetary pain that people really have no idea).

The Fed's decision to hike rates up has nothing to do with economics. It's 100% purely political and it is going to cause PAIN and DESTRUCTION, but ... "at the right time" - i.e. under a Republican.

Don't get me wrong, I prefer interest rates being normal and the Fed going back to where it should be ... but they should have done that years ago instead of wasting so much money and so much monetary integrity and now they are just using that whole scheme to try and kill off anything resembling a conservative for a very long time. That's their intention, at least.
