Overnight Open Thread (4 Mar 2017)

Well we'll see where this goes. Yes, there could be serious legal problems if Obama admin involved in illegal surveillance.

High Speed Rail

Trump's Transportation Secretary halts funding for California's bullet train. Good. It's a boondongle. Perhaps they can now focus on failing bridges and dams instead. Also, kinda funny that CA talks about seceding when they sure seem to need Uncle Sam a lot.

Drinking Games

It's all fun and games until someone dies. Man wins bet chugging bottle of tequila, dies minutes later.

Zorb Balls Island Battle

Dumbassery

Stormtroopers banned from Star Wars themed college reunion over alleged Nazi inspiration. Are you freakin' kidding me?

Best Movie Car

Oh this outta be good in the comments. The top 13 movie cars of all time. I'm pretty partial to the Mustang in Bullitt.

Deadpool Teaser

Iran

So why haven't they released the Obama/Iran nuke deal details? C'mon Trump, fire for effect and order them released.

What If?

In case you ever wondered if you could still toast a piece of bread if your toaster was in the freezer.

Raid On Scarif Analysis

Saw this on Instapundit the other day. No more Task Force Rogue Ones: A tactical analysis of the Raid on Scarif.

Cat Video

Tonight's ONT brought to you by cold war bombers:

Deadpool is self-aware and pretty comical. It also makes fun of other superhero movies in the jokes and characters chosen, but not subtle Obama style back-biting. It makes fun of the movies upfront and to their face.

The most interesting part is it makes fun of movies that are part of its own universe and money-draws.

I liked it. Crude and gory and foul-mouthed, but very much a comic book movie.

"The Prisoner" is one of the greatest series in TV history.

Created by Patrick McGoohan, it consisted of 17 episodes in the late 1960s. It was about the individual vs. society.

That young lady's video was a brilliant and hilarious parody/homage of the opening sequence, right down to the type font on the credits. It was letter perfect.

He's at the airport, price on his head and he's out of ammo. He is attacked by two greedy schmucks. And your eyes go to the nice yellow #2 with pink eraser on the long table. And I said "Do it. DO IT." And then he does gruesome things with it.

But I'm listening to the scattered audience, to hear their appreciative gasps of horror. And I think it's a missed opportunity, that there wasn't a third person. He could have been one of those poor crawlers that John Wick rightly assumed was dead already. If he had done the thing that everyone talks about, not knowing if it was luck or bullshit, killed three men with a pencil, and the audience would have gone rightly apeshit.

255 The Democrat Deep State does local elections, too.

http://apne.ws/2lM6RNa

They Scott Walkered this Republican populist after he had the damn nerve and temerity to win a BLOW-OUT re-election he wasn't "supposed to". That was 4 years after the first time he also won an election he wasn't supposed to.

So they destroy not only his life but the lives of everyone connected to him on phony corruption charges they stretch out for over a year. Then they come up completely empty (of course).

BTW, the AP article I linked refers to this two-term mayor as a "stand-up comedian" (as if that were his only job ever) and sure seems to think that investigations are good and anyone who resists them is certainly a crook.

Trump, like Walker and this guy, are victims of the perpetual lawfare the deep state will engage in if you threaten their Union deals, their ill-gotten Cadillac pensions, their strangle-hold on media, etc... This really is WAR. If we play by their rules, we will ALWAYS lose. And even accepting the proposed terms of engagement is a sure loser, because they always lie.

If Trump gives even an inch to this phoniness, he might as well resign, because once he has given an inch, he'll never be given the chance to protect his miles.

when the monks in the Third European Dark Age write the dictionary of the Pax Americana, under the entry for "humblebrag" they will have his Papal name as its first example.

261 There were 3, ah, Middle Eastern types that presented at 2 different Los Angeles emergency rooms last year (around July) with the typical symptoms of exposure to a certain class of organophosphate compounds, including spastic twitching and bleeding from all orifices, apparently after experimenting in their apartment bathroom. All died, and Top. Men. swarmed the facilities and their apartment. The Top. Men. instructed the hospitals as to what the causes of death were to be listed as.

This, of course, has been widely discussed in the media. However, their true motives will probably never be known.

326 As to the A-5 ejecting human payloads from the bomb tube, color me skeptical.

Hell, one of the biggest reasons they quit using the bomb tube for weapons delivery, was the worrisome tendency said munitions to become caught up in the wake-bubble behind the jet, and "follow it like a puppy", until gravity and drag eventually had their way with things.

Which, when playing with nuclear devices, ain't cool. You do NOT want one of those following you like a puppy, nor eventually falling many, many miles, off target.

Imagine Captain Agent being caught in the same conditions, and being nicely roasted by jet exhaust while along for the ride.

What's interesting about the Vigilante though, is how much of it's planform and design inspired the designs of the subsequent MiG 25.

327 From The Guardian in January :

"The Guardian has learned that the FBI applied for a warrant from the foreign intelligence surveillance (Fisa) court over the summer in order to monitor four members of the Trump team suspected of irregular contacts with Russian officials. The Fisa court turned down the application asking FBI counter-intelligence investigators to narrow its focus. According to one report, the FBI was finally granted a warrant in October, but that has not been confirmed, and it is not clear whether any warrant led to a full investigation."

Let me clear up a common misconception here and set your mind at rest.

If you miss an end bracket on the close tag that will NOT cause an italics spillover.

To restate that, if you have one open italics tag without a corresponding close tag, that will not cause spillover. You need *two* open italics tags without any corresponding close tags.

To demonstrate I will do one open italics tag and will omit the closing tag: and it will not cause a spillover into the next comment and I will not have committed a "barrel" offense.

The funding that was shut off was for electrification and probably grade separation of Caltrain, which is a 60mph commuter train that runs from SF to San Jose because San Mateo and Santa Clara counties did not buy into the BART district back in, oh, 1958.

Neither did Marin, Sonoma, or other points north.

Now, the Brown Streak boosters would love to have their toy running up the Peninsula and sharing right-of-way with Caltrain, but to make that happen you have to have this thing that was just shot down. It's a necessary but not sufficient condition of Jerry's toy.

the dems wiretapped on purpose, knowing they would win and there would be no consequences. The Russian thing was a fabrication to get info on Trump for the FAB.

so... push the totally fake russian angle, and when they're caught illegally wiretapping because we did it becuase he's a russian agent and had a server connected to Moscow in Trump Tower!!!

Well, you had the Olds 403 which was an oddball attempt at producing a big displacement engine of very limited strength, and the Pontiacs all the way up through 455 which were pretty much 'small-block' in external dimensions and weight...they at least tried to make these things tough enough to handle the HP they were trying to pull from them.

410 The Guardian has learned that the FBI applied for a warrant from the foreign intelligence surveillance (Fisa) court over the summer in order to monitor four members of the Trump team suspected of irregular contacts with Russian officials.

The left hand: We really really suspected these guys of doing something wrong.

The right hand: They were spying on us.

My expectation is that in the end this is a net positive for Trump, because that 'something wrong' seems to have been little more than a handshake and a box of cookies, yet the Obama crew kept looking.

Indian development offices tend to be reasonably good about following the letter of a contract or a detailed set of requirements.

But that's why you hire junior developers as well.

They tend to be terrible about the creative side of software development. Generally businesses regret outsourcing whole projects as they get *exactly* what they asked for whether it actually does what they *want*.

This is all true, but you did not mention that what they deliver is likely to be cobbled-together and horribly unmaintainable, and that anyone who spends 2-3 years becoming an expert on your outsourced project is likely to bail for a higher-paying job at a different outsourcing firm, and substitute a newb, letting you find out about the transition only when you make a point of asking.

424 It seems to me that one of the obvious solutions available to Trump is to formally launch an investigation of Hillary and the DNC's emails.

My friends on the Democrat side of the aisle keep saying the Russia hacked their emails revealing various shady dealings by Hillary Clinton and her allies to help me. My friends on the Republican side have pointed out the crimes revealed in these emails by Hillary Clinton and her allies have not been investigated.

Well, I had hoped that we could come together after the last election as we had the ones before, but it appears we are stuck as a country.

I have therefore asked Preet Bharara to lead a special task force. They are charged with identifying who leaked the information in Hillary Clinton and John Podesta's emails and to recommend criminal prosecutions where sensible based on the evidence revealed. So far he has recommended the prosecution of Donna Brazil for campaign finance violations, and I expect more to come in the next couple of weeks.

One of the machines was complex and we were concerned that they would have trouble getting it up and running...but surprisingly it was going very smoothly. Way to smoothly. Until the project manager asked for a picture of the area of the facility the machine was supposed to be in from a different group there.

The machine that was supposed to be going through the final stages of testing? It wasn't actually there yet.

You see on the Indian side they had run into trouble physically getting the machine to the facility. The group we were working with presumed they would be blamed for it so....they lied. They did plan on "catching up" once they got it but....that was not realistic.

And this is how it goes with outsourcing...

441 MAx at March,

The 338 is a flat shooter at long range, no doubt about it, but have you thought about barrel life? Much like the 270 round it has a short barrel life. There is a reason God inspired the creation of adjustable sights and adjustable scopes. Yes, the 338 puts lots of energy down range. But you might want to consider that at around 3500 rounds of occasional shooting you may need a new barrel. In the zombie apocalypse maybe 1000 or 1500 shots.

This is not a criticism, merely an observation. I mostly, beyond 22LR, shoot 8mm Mauser 192 grain from my German 98 and 2 Yugoslavian model 48 Mausers. Long barrel life, decent accuracy at 400 yards with open sights, dead on at 600 yards with the scoped Yugo. My reloads are around 6 MOA at 600y.

"Boroughcastle Brigadier's ragged banner of a tail streamed out behind him, his battle-scarred ears were upright and forward, and his noble pink and black nose twitched, straining to encompass all that his short peering gaze was denied. Thin and tired, hopeful, happy--and hungry, his remarkable face alight with expectation--the old warrior was returning from the wilderness. Bodger, beautiful for once, was coming as fast as he could.

He broke into a run, faster and faster, until the years fell away, and he hurled himself towards Peter.

And as he had never run before, as though he would outdistance time, Peter was running towards his dog. John Longridge turned away, then, and left them, an indistinguishable tangle of boy and dog, in a world of their own making. He started down the trail as in a dream, his eyes unseeing.

Halfway down he became aware of a small animal running at lightning speed towards him. It swerved past his legs with an agile twist and he caught a brief glimpse of a black-masked face and a long black tail before it disappeared up the trail in the swiftness of a second.

It was Tao, returning for his old friend, that they might end their journey together.

A union facing a shortage of workers and unable to meet the demands of the industry is going to want to fill those jobs, both because it means more dues coming in, as well as because they don't want to give businesses and local governments an excuse to say, "see, we need to bring in outside / nonunion help!"

paid into it. His son was getting $795 a month when he was disabled.
She'll need birth certificates for the kids, marriage license and death

think about in times like this is how the bills get paid.

She should be able to get a certain amount for each kid that's still in school or under 18. The 19 year old will have to prove he's in school, and if he can they'll cut him a check directly.

Except in the more bitter months of Iowa winter, yes I shoot that much. Because I reload I can afford to put a lot of lead down range. I routinely fire 100 to 200 rounds of 8mm per week. After all, practice makes perfect.

I am not disparaging the 338. I merely want to suggest it is not for the casual shooter. And thinking you are a casual shooter, less than 100 rounds per month, is not intended as an insult. Its just a casual comment about the caliber of choice anf the cost of purchasing factory ammo or even reloaded ammo.

Dodge Dart, as I recall? IF it appeared to be a Road Runner, it wasn't. Likely a Fury, in all of it's base model, stripped down, no-options form.

Don't know if they stuffed a Slant 6 into those, but if not, a smog-strangled 318.

The car in that movie was depicted as the ultimate, bottom feeder, corporate fleet mid-management sled.

In that, they succeeded.

508 Indian development offices tend to be reasonably good about following the letter of a contract or a detailed set of requirements.

But that's why you hire junior developers as well.

They tend to be terrible about the creative side of software development. Generally businesses regret outsourcing whole projects as they get *exactly* what they asked for whether it actually does what they *want*.

It's why Indian call centers are a bad idea. The staffers speak English very well and are fluent. The problem is that they are not fluent in conversational American English.

It's why someone from Britain would have difficulty speaking to an American from Hazard, KY. The Brit wouldn't understand certain slang and uses of words that are different than what he is used to using/hearing. After a while, the Brit would understand and start incorporating those words and uses of words in his conversation. Trump knows what he is doing.

He tweets it out early this morning, it's all anyone is talking about today. By Monday, the media will be screaming for an investigation that they think will blow up in his face.

Problem is, Trump knows what the wiretaps on him were all about, what's in them, and who did them. Rogers probably gave him some information, and while there are a lot of Dem operatives in the deep state, there are probably some GOP ones that have been feeding the Administration some info on where the bodies are buried.

I'm off to bed as I am emotionally drained by having to explain the end of Incredible Journey to my husband. He didn't remember if the old dog made it. I couldn't explain it without crying.

Yes, he does.

His wild tweets make me nervous, but I don't think they are as reckless as they often look. He drags in the media and the Democrats to make pronouncements denouncing him, then pulls out the proof. The media and the Democrats then end up looking like Wyle E. Coyote.

He's using Twitter as a marketing tool to draw attention to what may be the Mother of all Scandals.

If the Guardian and other articles are true, this is a Big Deal even if it didn't go any further than that.

To paraphrase, Trump tweeted that he just "found out" that Obama had hips "wires tapped" at Trump Towers just before the victory. I think that Trump knows more than we do and he isn't engaging in speculation.

The Mrs department became a call center for a couple of years, and everyone that called in were shocked that the people on the other end of the line had southern accents instead of Indian.

Of course, after those couple of years, the calls were then routed to a call center in India. About a year later, the company was bought out by another company and they ended the overseas call center.

Yes. I have been there twice. Bought a Zip Van, and also a '51 Commander two-door sedan that has old script on it indicating it was drag-raced back in the day. Even has an after-market floor shifter. Would be cool to learn if it had any real racing history.Engine is seized, but it is all there, and car is not noticeably rusty. Both at "parts car" price: buy one for $300, get a second one free.

Zip Van is here with me in AJ. Will pick up the '51 on the 18th, next sale day. Still a huge number of cars and trucks there.

651 I've told this story before but there's more to it, and it's plaguing me.

About 4 years ago, I dated this guy. He had some baggage. I knew whilst dating him that he had been previously married, and had some big issues with drugs. But, believing that he was trying to set himself straight and that everyone deserves a second chance, I didn't hold that against him.

He was a little bit of a DB at times, but we did have a lot of the same interests and could get caught up in conversations too. Every time I thought there was no way I would want to see him again, he'd change my mind.

Anyway one night we were at his newly purchased house, watching movies, and we are making out and all that jazz. Then, we take a break, for a little bit of a breather. He starts talking about getting married and having kids. Out of nowhere. So, I say something about taking things slow for a while. And he snaps at me, "I don't have a while to wait!" which I found kind of weird. The evening sort of fizzled out not long after that.

After that, we eventually stop seeing each other, and he goes so far as to tell me he had another girl on the side as backup, and he was moving on to her, since she was more serious about starting a relationship. Ok fine. I find out after the "breakup" or whatever you'd call it that he has an arrest record, even a very recent one, and I chalk everything up to "Thank goodness" and move on with my life. About 6 months later, he messages me, I kid you not with, "Okay, well, when do you want to get together?" As if I was sitting around waiting for him or something. No. I had moved on. Not to any specific person, just mentally I had moved on.

Anyway, about a year and a half ago, he passed away. Never found out what it was from or about. My gut instinct was suicide, but his statement about not having a while has always kind of haunted me. Now, I am looking back at things with rose-colored glasses thinking, was I too harsh? Was I too hasty? Did he give me HIV while we were making out?

I haven't dated or even kissed anyone since. Not intentionally putting my life on hold, but I was burned by the situation, and decided I would wait for a serious relationship before entering the dating world again. So...here I've been. I don't know if my mood is just me thinking I should get back on the dating train. I've thought of the situation non-stop for like 3 days, when I hadn't thought about it for at least since he died.

Posted by: TickledPink at March 05, 2017 02:50 AM (smD62)

652 I guess my question is...

Should I ignore my mood? Should I do the casual dating thing again, even though I swore I wouldn't?

Posted by: TickledPink at March 05, 2017 02:56 AM (smD62)

653 Let ot drift. It will haunt you for a while, a long while, and then one day it won't.

There's no comfort in that, I know, but there's not much comfort in most things.

654 So. A little something that slipped under the radar this week. Per a Drudge blurb, the current Pope has requested that the world quit breeding humans so damn much. Something about saving the planet iirc.

Now, my Catholicism is admittedly pretty weak, but it seems to me that for at least the last 50 years or so, the stance of the Catholic church has been 'Be fruitful and multiply'. Maybe this is new math then.

Going a bit further, the stance of the Church is/was that birth control is a big no no. American Catholics kinda blew that one off for the most part, but the rest of the world went 'okay'. In fact, the approved Church method was 'the rhythm method', aka say hello to parenthood for most of those that tried to follow it.

But then again as I mentioned, my Catholic doctrinal understandings are on the weak side.

655 654. I'd say to be open to the possibility - gelassenheit, Heidegger calls it. I met my angel at a place where I'd come to work until everything was squared away, at which point I'd hang myself. Life always has other plans.

I'm likely way older than you but. I've been married twice and both times picked crazy women. I have decided I can't pick a normal one so quit trying. I have the luxury of children and grandchildren so no real loss me getting out of the market. If you want kids you should carefully put yourself out there. Mostly so you don't have those specific regrets later.

Seriously, tomorrow the cobs should play that video with "Shadilay" (https://youtu.be/AN3uhImuy6E) or "Never Come Down" (https://youtu.be/ZC3W1lZpSmY).

Both are perfect fits.

720 Funny thing - shashka girl there is the idol of my daughters. #2 daughter is working on a combined shashka & kindzhal routine to Tengger Cavalry's 'Cavalry in Thousands.' Heh....a metal Cossack....that's my girl.

725 So here I am, grumbling away at being awake at a ridiculous time of the am, grateful that I am at least somewhat up and functional with a heavy cold, and all I was thinking about as I read the ONT is that I remember a Xena opening with her waving a sword around.

--Have you read Tuva or Bust: Richard Feynman's Last Journey?

A lovely, brisk read. The good Dr. Feynman was obsessed with Tannu Tuva.

Also, we may be running out of awesome soundtracks for that shashka babe.

727 Have to look for that one.

Want a really oddly beautiful one? Synch her up to Home (The Naive Melody) by Talking Heads.

--I got it through a cheap books list in the '90s. That book came with a floppy record inserted with a throat-singing piece. My first exposure to that weirdly beautiful artform.

And my appreciation for Feynman increased.

730 So far, Never Come Down seems the best, I must say. Definitely a winner with Teh Horde.

731 I remember when my oldest found my shashka and kindzhal and asked about them. I showed her, and that was that - shr and her sister and brother HAD to learn how to do the dances. Three years later, and they could carve me up like a turkey.

--I agree. "Home" is good as well, but no matter what point you start "Never Come Down," it works. Even with the Trump (PBUH) sound byte. I should see if my laptop has the software to make a 10-hour loop of this WIN.

Saw that video this morning. It is outrageous. Link goes to WND, but apparently the dems posted it to their FB page. Video is less than one minute:
