1 Good Morning Morons. Today is Sunday, February 26, 2017. On this day in 1616 Galileo Galilei was formally banned by the Roman Catholic Church from teaching or defending the view that the earth orbits the sun.

41 In #fakehatenews that will shock exactly no one the Daily Caller reports that

A black waitress who received thousands of dollars in donations after she claimed she received a racist note and no tip from a patron last month fabricated the incident, the customer claims.

Kelly Carter, a waitress at Anita's New Mexico Cafe in Ashburn, Va., claimed that a white man stiffed her on his $30.52 restaurant bill and wrote "Great service, don't tip black people" at the bottom of his receipt.

But the note was forged, says Daniel Hebda, a lawyer for the customer.

Hebda said in a statement Friday that his client did leave Carter a small tip - one penny - because her service was poor, not because she is black.

I have done the one penny thing maybe twice in my life. You want the server to know that you didn't forget the tip, but that they didn't earn one. Tips are not automatic (except, apparently, in parties of 6 or more).

46 I nedz koffee

Posted by: Skip at February 26, 2017 05:54 AM (HDU3V)

Speaking of coffee, how many here drink instant coffee? Back in college in the mid '70s, I drank instant coffee because there were no Mr. Coffee makers yet and a percolator pot was simply to much work (and still is to me to this day). I had one friend who only drank instant because he couldn't stand having to wash the coffee pot out. That has to be the lamest excuse for drinking instant.

Now I even forego pre-ground coffee in the grocery store; I use whole beans. But I can deal with pre-ground coffee; I simply cannot abide by instant unless one is camping or in survival mode.

Also, I keep my beans in the fridge and put them in the coffee grinder a good hour before grinding to allow the beans to come to room temp.
As for the boiled eggs recipes/comments last night, I see that no one adds a capful of white vinegar to the water. The vinegar prevents outer edge of the yolk from turning green. I like my boiled eggs soft. The recipe I use is put the eggs in a pot, add water and vinegar. Bring to a boil, with the lid on is a faster boil. Once the water is at a full boil, turn off the heat and let the eggs stand in the water for exactly 11 minutes. You'll get a fluffy bright yellow yolk every time (and without that green ring). I'm now down to letting the eggs sit for 9:30 so that my yolks are a darker yellow with a softer, verging on runny, yolk.

I like my eggs soft, whether fried or scrambled, with no brown or crispy bits; I never cook eggs on high heat. I happen to think eggs are the most abused food in the kitchen. And anyone who advocates for boiling eggs a total of thirty minutes (on and off heat) is a serial abuser of eggs. I know we have too many laws as it is, but there outta be an egg law with swift and sever punishments allowed for abusing eggs.

Another helpful hint with eggs: Never add salt to uncooked eggs, like when one is scrambling eggs. Add salt only after they are cooked as the salt can make the eggs tougher.

Ran into a very nice female employee at one of the major Home Improvement stores last night.

She was moving pallets of paint by herself and was struggling with it.

I suggested that she ask for help, but her response was that as a female, if she were to ask for help, they would look down on her.

I simply suggested that she tell them that she now identifies as man, and then go get some help.

She liked that idea.

Having worked in restaurants, top end and lesser places, to give a 1 cent tip is an insult. What you want to do when you get bad service and 'leave a message' is to leave 2 cents, as in giving the waitress 'your two cents worth'.

Also, never stiff a waitress for bad food. A server serves the food but doesn't cook it. Too many customers take bad food out of the waitresses tips.

I think they'll stay silent. Like support for Muslim women. Rock and hard place. A female wrestler wants testosterone in order to 'become' male. But feminists believe testosterone is the source of all evil in the world -- is their mantra. While nearly everything of tangible value in their lives was produced by a testosterone fueled male.

I remember reading some feminist, years ago, talking about her experience with testosterone patches. She seemed both shocked and awed by the experience.

Nah'luns coffee. My coffee bean store will not only make a Nah'luns blend for you, adding 10% chicory, but they will also sell the chicory as a stand alone.

You can sometimes find CDM coffee in the grocery store; the CDM stand for Cafe du Monde, a place for chicory coffee and fresh beignets in the French Quarter.

You're right, though. Liking chicory in coffee is binary: You either love it or hate it; there is no middle ground (pun intended).

113 I mentioned Science Alert yesterday as a decent source of science news; Insty often links them. They have a piece up about some sinkholes opening up in Siberia, due to permafrost melting.

"The Batagaika site contains a remarkably thick sequence of permafrost deposits, which include two wood-rich layers interpreted as forest beds that indicate past climates about as warm or warmer than today's climate," Murton told Sarah Emerson over at Motherboard last year.

"The upper forest bed overlies an old land surface that was eroded, probably when permafrost thawed in a past episode of climate warming."

http://preview.tinyurl.com/j48pg87

The northern Hemisphere, particularly in the upper latitudes, has been warming over the last few decades, as evidenced by lower amounts of sea ice on average from the 1970s - 1980s. And they do tip their hat about higher CO2 levels; also true. But this sinkhole has revealed about 200,000 years of climate history, and as the above quote shows there have been at least two periods in Siberia where it was at least as warm or warmer than today.

I guess the polar bears managed the last few warming periods without our able assistance. The climate is changing, has always changed, and will someday be both warmer and colder than it is now. Yay for science.

Not according to PBS :

So just when did polar bears arise as a separate subspecies? Genetic models show that the emergence of the polar bear could have taken place as recently as 70,000 years ago or as many as 1.5 million years ago. For many years, a fossil found at Kew Bridge in London was considered the oldest polar bear specimen. The fossil then placed the evolution around 70,000 years ago. But recently, scientists uncovered a fossilized jawbone from an island in the Arctic Ocean midway between Norway and the North Pole, dated to be at least 100,000 years old. Scientists believe this jawbone may represent the remains of the oldest-known polar bear, thus marking the appearance of the polar bear earlier than previously thought.

This wrestler is a biologic female who is 'transitioning' to the declared gender of male, and taking testosterone replacements (hence the muscle development and the cries of 'unfair'). The state's rules required her to wrestle against competitors of the same sex "as stated on their birth certificate".

A girl who thinks she's a boy wrestling against weaker girls. Not a boy who thinks he's a girl wrestling against other girls.

In an unprecedented move, lawmakers have granted special powers to the president to pull the plug on live broadcasts of parliamentary debate in cases of racist speech or acts and the ability to purge any offending video or audio material from the system.

171 I wonder if the mother of Matthew Shepherd and the mother of Trayvon Martin go on to become "advocates" because they like the fame and money, or because they feel guilty, or for some other reason.

Trayvon Martin would be alive today if his mother had not thrown him out of her house. Martin was only living in George Zimmerman's neighborhood because his mother had booted him from her home in Miami, and his father had parked the kid with one of his girlfriends. And Matthew Shepherd was dealing drugs and selling himself for sex at the age of 21. If those two young men had had more stable and supportive home lives, both of them may have avoided the situations that led to their violent deaths at such young ages.

Of course, both Martin and Shepherd made their own choices that led them to their deaths. But it's still hard not to wonder what might have been if their mothers (and fathers) had shown as much interest in them and devotion to them during the lives as they did after their deaths.

You forget about the difference in upper body strength a man has over a woman.

How the feminist movement will deal with this trend, I'm sure will be loaded with hypocrisy.

Don't validate their insanity by using their preferred pronouns. It's not a man, nor a boy, it's a teenage girl, roided up the hoo-ha with testosterone to bulk up its muscles, but there's still a vagina in there, not to mention the old XX chromosomes, so she is still female; just a royally fucked-up one.

232 Every math intensive business used to have a department full.of calculators - usually women with mechanical tabulators - checking and cross checking the numbers.

Insurance, banking, engineering, etc. It was a good job and required attention to detail and excellent basic math skills. There used to be a whole discipline of how to organize and manage this staff.

Important yes. The hidden secret behind the success of white men everywhere, not so much.

233 Come on, he's hardly even close. To be 100% anal in coffee preparation you must roast your own beans. Secured from some obscure location in the world. Vacuum sealed for shipping.

Ha! I used to do that but I drink so much coffee that I was roasting every other day and the house started to be a bit "smoky".

234 I spent quite a few years in Korea as a member of Uncle Sam's Aero Club. One of the things Koreans love to drink is Tasters Choice coffee. They'll drink it both hot or as ice coffee. Needless to say, it was a lucrative black market item, as was Spam.

235 Reminds me of a scary Aussie SF novel by McMullen, so I'll remind myself in the book thread of governments taking over children who can do arithmetic for calculator cogs in a great machine.

236 I drink Nesafe Clasico instant while traveling in the motor home. When at home or camping for a day or more Green Mountain K Cups. Mrs. UF drinks hot tea. Blecccchhh.

238 My Cuisinart coffee maker was some special online deal thing, I forget where. But turned out it had a grinder that can be put on the timer. So it grinds the beans and blows them into the basket and greets the bleary eyed with a beep.

I just make already ground generic as needed and am fine with day old stuff from the thermal carafe, but it is a nifty feature and works fine. The blade part lifts right out for easy rinsing. If I have company I guess I can impress them with some beans, but I'm just not that refined in real life.

And not just the female is effed up...the sport is, the medical community is, and the public that stands still to watch the spectacle.

I didn't know polar bears were that recent. 100,000 years is the blink of an eye in evolutionary terms.

That article about humans in South America evolving (selecting) in 7000 years to drink arsenic water was fascinating.

243 Update on Oroville Dam:

Yes they did get close to drowning 10000+ as they fled town but dodged the bullet.

What is left of the broken spillway has been used to draw off the top 50' of the lake.

They have drawn a curtain around their recovery efforts. They even fire workers who post pictures to their social media of the happenings.

The emergency spillway hillside is being carpeted with boulders and shotcrete. Trucks were said to be delivering 1200 tons per hour. That probably won't work in a sustained worst case 3500000 cfs overflow but it will last a lot longer than the nothing but native hillside they had below the never before used emergency spillway for 48 years before. Truck traffic has diminished in the last couple days finally.

Today they shut off the broken spillway water to assess the damage. They are probably going to be forced to build a new one elsewhere as the broken one will likely take too long to repair before the Fall rains come again. They still need to use the broken spillway to dump the mountain snowmelt and Spring rains to come.

Moonbeam is promising to raise taxes on everyone in the state rather than charge the 400+ clearly identifiable users of the water delivered from the lake to pay for the estimated $200 million. If CA state common core math is accurate, it will actually cost $1.2 billion. He never misses a chance to fuck the voters who keep the Democrats safe in their sinecure positions of power over them. It's Stockholm Syndrome writ large.

Living in CA is like living in an acid trip while suffering food poisoning.
