Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | Low Content Open Thread Until Ace Shows UpOK, fine, I got nothing, but here's a new thread. Marine Le Pen, president of the National Front (FN) political party in France (which is similar to the UKIP in Great Britain) went to a meeting with the Grand Mufti of Jerusalem. They told her to wear a hijab. She didn't. The meeting was cancelled. You'd think she'd be hailed as a great feminist hero by Europe's progressive gliteratti. You'd be wrong. Perhaps this pic explains why: It's funny how those fierce, fightin' feminists turn into cringing cowards whenever they're in a situation where their fierce, fightin' feminism has actual consequences. And the only woman with the courage to stand up to the 7th century barbarians is Marine Le Pen. Who is literally Hitler.Bonus material, because I'm a giver, here's the dumbest tweet this week:

99 I've always preferred TOS, even though, to be frank, most of the episodes after the first season are garbage (my faves are The Enterprise Incident and The Tholian Web, so take my opinion as you will). TNG had no appeal for me beyond Marina Sirtis' breasts, DS9 was nothing but darkness and angst and the less said about Voyager and Enterprise, the better.

Contemporary, "activist" feminism is wholly owned by the hard left, for whom "F*ck your traditionalist, Western, racist, imperialist oppression" is the core value.
So anything seen as non-Western, or better yet anti-Western is automatically more authentic, and cooler (coolness being another core value). Hence, I'll wear your Freedom Hijab to poke a finger in the eye of The Man. Posted by: xnycpeasant at February 23, 2017 12:18 PM (QtQaN) 198

159 Why did they not follow the Captain Pike storyline in the subsequent movies? Did that piss off the Trekkies?
Posted by: Sebastian Melmoth at February 23, 2017 12:14 PM (VeUrT) =================== The original series? When Nicholas Meyer got hired for Star Trek II he hadn't seen anything Star Trek, so he went through the series to see if there was something he could use in developing the movie. The one thing that jumped out to him was Khan (may we all thank him for not skipping Space Seed). The next few movies focused on the results of that, only finally coming back to a brand new story in V, which was driven by Shatner's ego (his toupee was the copilot). VI was the send off. By that point Pike was long gone and would have required a lot of explanation in just getting Pike there in the first place (he's crippled, scared, on a hidden quarantined planet, but it's all an illusion by these aliens who are holding him in a zoo...that's a lot). Pike was never interesting enough to dedicate that level of effort to in a motion picture. Posted by: TheJamesMadison at February 23, 2017 12:19 PM (vur0q) 205

The Indian government has cleared a $2.5 billion deal for the countrys army to buy the Medium Range Surface to Air Defense Missile (MR-SAM) system from Israeli Aerospace Industries (IAI), another step towards the signing of the deal with the Israeli company, Indian media reported on Thursday. The MR-SAM system, jointly developed by Indias Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) in close collaboration with IAI, is a land-based configuration of the long-range surface-to-air missile (LRSAM) or Barak-8 naval air defense system. Able to shoot down enemy aircraft at a range of 50-70 kilometers, it will help to protect India from enemy aircraft and will replace the countrys aging air defense systems. There's an idiot that has been posting here named Crusader that keeps saying that Milo doesn't see himself as a vicitim. Which is, you know, bull shit. Since just about everything he had been saying about this began with "I was a victim of child abuse."
Why would you be so strident about my posts? You labelled my assertion "full of shit" in a previous thread, yet Milo has been quoted as labelling interactions he had as a teen with grown men as "coming of age" encounters, and also made statements that such encounters can be comforting to one who is finding one's sexual identity. If anything, Milo hasn't fully processed his victimhood, and words like his don't hold up well to critical scrutiny. You can disagree all you like, but we're on the same never-Hillary side of the spectrum so I'm not sure why you feel that name-calling is in order. In 1979, the late, great Oriana Fallaci interviewed the Ayatollah Khomenei, who had recently returned to power. Fallaci was a Socialist, but she was also a fierce defender of democracy and human rights..
One of terms for the interview was that Fallaci had to wear the head-to-toe chador and that she would be barefoot. During the interview, Fallaci had had enough. Excerpt from the NYT transcript: KHOMEINI: This is none of your business. Our customs are none of your business. If you do not like Islamic dress your are not obliged to wear it. Because Islamic dress is good and proper for young women. FALLACI: That's very kind of you, Imam. And since you said so, I'm going to take off this stupid, medieval rag right now. There. Done. But tell me something. A woman such as I, who has always lived among men, showing her neck, her hair, her ears, who has been in war and slept in the front line in the field among soldiers, according to you, is she an immoral, bold and unproper woman? The NYT transcript is below the facsimile of the original article.LINK: http://preview.tinyurl.com/h7qbe39 Posted by: mrp at February 23, 2017 12:32 PM (JBggj) 289

personally I don't think it's wrong to wear a hajib when entering the home of an observant muslim (which I think was going on here -- I think Le Pen was going to wherever this woman was staying, in the diplomatic compound or whatever).
I don't think it says much, or is any kind of submission, to observe minor cultural habits of a guest. I've mentioned this before, but I was at a Jewish funeral or wedding or something, and some ritual requires ten men to sanctify it or something, and because they didn't have enough Jewish men, they decided to just draft me as a temporary ad-hoc Jew to be counted in the ritual. I wore a menorah and stuff. I tried to repeat the prayer (poorly) or whatever it was. That didn't make me Jewish, and I wasn't "submitting" to the Jewish religion or denying my God (to the extent I have one) or anything. I was just going along to help some people out. I think such things have to be read in context. I've gone to weddings in strict Catholic churches that required women's shoulders to be covered. Non-catholic and indeed non-Christian women were present, and had their shoulders covered, per the general requirement. I wouldn't say they were bowing to the Catholic church. In context, this minor action was just being polite and observing a local tradition out of respect for those who hold that tradition sacred, not actually buying into the religion or the tradition. So MPPP, I take it you're not a fan of "In the Pale Moonlight"? For me, as I've gotten older, I've noted that TNG aged verry poorly, with most episodes being meh, but the really good ones still stand up: Eg, Parts of season 3, 4, and 5. Season 6 had its high points as well: Relics is awesome. DS9 appeals to me for the same reason as Babylon 5: the characters are more relatable because they're not shiny perfect people like in TNG. Voyager fell victim to this flaw as well, IMHO, only with the main characters being a bit more hippocritical from time to time. THe series does have its bright spots: Robert Picardo was a real bright spot, very Bones-ish. Enterprise's problem is that they were on a network that didn't know what they were doing and had a creative team that didn't get their shit together until very late. Season 3 is good and so is most of season 4. Issues with continuity aside, the episode with the Borg was the first episode in a while where they felt legitimately threatening.

Posted by: Curmudgeon at February 23, 2017 12:30 PM (ujg0T) It never changes. Back in the 1980's there was a big kerfuffle in Alberta to do with the "Lubicon Lake Indian Band", which was a splinter group from a band that did exist, and did have reserve land, who wanted to be recognized and to take over a bunch of Crown land that was being leased and drilled for oil. They even had a paid, white, American agitator from Chicago running the show. These clowns were based out of a little Indian town called Little Buffalo. I chanced to drive down the highway past Little Buffalo as part of a seismic crew. We were transiting the area, not working directly near there. Anyway, about a mile down the highway from the Little Buffalo access road, was the access road to the local landfill (dump). It was easy to spot, because the ditches on either side of the highway were absolutely strewn with garbage: trash bags, discarded Christmas trees, busted TV's, busted sofas, soiled mattresses, you name it. Too lazy to drive a fucking mile to the damned dump. Wise stewards of the natural environment, my ass! Posted by: Alberta Oil Peon at February 23, 2017 12:49 PM (WDdjT) 381

I agree, its like taking your shoes off in a Japanese home, its just respect for the person there. That said, in her place, she's not just a visitor, and this isn't just dropping by to a home. It was a media event, she represents her party, and in this case it would have been submission to this man's demands and a cultural thing. In any case: you're right about free speech. Remember, there was an incident where a protestor almost got her arm blown off by what appeared to be a pipe bomb and they claimed it was a grenade thrown by the cops, which was total BS. Maybe they're just burning evidence they are afraid to cart off because they might get caught with it. Anyway, two poor kids with absolute idiots for parents are now injured. You wanna know somthing interesting: Valeris was originally supposed to be Saavik. The studio put the kibosh on it because they didn't know how the fans would react to her turning heel. Kinda funny considering Kim Cattral was the actress originally wanted for the Saavik part in Star Trek 2.
Posted by: Jackal at February 23, 2017 12:55 PM (EcF3f) It was my understanding that it was Roddenberry who said "no" to Saavik being a traitor, as she'd become part of the Trek family. For that scene to work as well as it did, the recollection of the USS Botany Bay was needed to build tension and thus a member of the old Enterprise crew was needed. I think such things have to be read in context. I've gone to weddings in
strict Catholic churches that required women's shoulders to be covered. Non-catholic and indeed non-Christian women were present, and had their shoulders covered, per the general requirement. ====================== Modesty restrictions during religious rites are one thing, wearing religious garb in living quarters or in a public building is something else. But here, the meeting between Le Pen and the Abdul Latif Derian was at his office. It was a business meeting, a political meeting, not like an intimate social dinner in a private home or a tourist visiting a mosque. She had told them in advance of the meeting that she would not be covering her head, and they did not object until she showed up. The problem is not that non-Muslims in the West do not show enough sensitivity and deference to Muslim beliefs and practices. It is that we need to make clear that they should not expect to be able to require non-Muslims to submit to Islamic dictates such making women cover up or visiting violence on those who 'blaspheme' Mohamet, and that respect and tolerance has to go both ways. "Remember, there was an incident where a protestor almost got her arm
blown off by what appeared to be a pipe bomb and they claimed it was a grenade thrown by the cops, which was total BS." They're completely brazen on the false claims now. During one of the urban "protests"-cum-riots, one of the participants was shot dead by another one of the participants, captured live in the act from multiple angles on video. The Black Lives Matter bunch immediately said their dead fellow traveller had been "assassinated by the cops". Posted by: torquewrench at February 23, 2017 01:09 PM (noWW6) 508

Le Pen was right in refusing to wear the hijab. She was right because if the grand mishti of Jerusalem (who is a total piece of shit, BTW)
wants to meet with her he needs to be forced to do it on her terms. More people need to treat islam and muslims like this. They don't deserve any respect because anytime you give a muslim some respect he interprets it as a sign of weakness and eventual submission. They meet as equals or not at all. Amazingly and unprecentedly, the AP, the NYT and a couple of other MSM outlet are all running 'immigrant' 'horror' stories today.
'immigrant', because they must conflate those here legally and the illegals. A couple of times, they slipped up a bit and used undocumented immigrants. 'horror' because they use words like haunted to describe their feels. But one common thread runs thru these stories of woe. Illegal aliens now have a sudden new respect for our laws, particularly those involving traffic enforcement, since getting a speeding ticket just might get them a one way ticket out of here. So they are, get this, scrupulously obeying the law to avoid any contact with law enforcement officials. Posted by: GnuBreed at February 23, 2017 01:10 PM (xpfRn) 522

The coastal Indians in Washington State shocked Lewis and Clark with their filthiness.
So many stupid myths about native Americans, and all of them come from that moronic enlightenment period "noble savage" BS. The theory that civilization causes sin and crime, and we'd all be better people the closer to nature we got and the less advanced we are as a culture. All postulated by people living in cities who knew nothing about these cultures. Indians in the Appalachian mountains were so destructive there are patches where nothing grows to this day. They'd slaughter herds of Buffalo off cliffs just to harvest a few pelts and meat. They attacked each other so viciously tribes that early settlers met disappeared off the planet by the time America was a country. In short: they were just people, but stone age people who when met with classical music, modern medicine, higher technology, architecture, etc rejected it all and clung to living in a hide tent on the dirt. 505 TNG had a late-in-the-run episode, "Ship in a Bottle," that carried the holodeck concept to its ultimate conclusion -- a conclusion that was inherent in the concept at the very start. After that, anything else was an anticlimax.
Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius at February 23, 2017 01:08 PM (EB9VD) ================== The holodeck itself, once it's past the initial "Hey! Neat!" reaction, is only good for highlighting elements of characters that we couldn't get anywhere else, but was never really used like that. Janeway, in the beginning of Voyager, kept going back to a program where she was a governess in an old English manor. It could have highlighted the idea (which the show never pursued) that Janeway wanted to get away from command and lead a simpler life. Instead, it was just an excuse to let Mulgrew dress nicely for a day of shooting every once in a while. Posted by: TheJamesMadison at February 23, 2017 01:11 PM (vur0q) 526

I think such things have to be read in context. I've gone to weddings in strict Catholic churches that required women's shoulders to be covered. Non-catholic and indeed non-Christian women were present, and had their shoulders covered, per the general requirement.
I don't know where those very conservative Catholic churches are, because I haven't seen any modesty rules enforced in my church since I was a young filly. Coincidentally, this morning I was chatting with a guy who had converted from Anglican to Roman Catholic. The photos of his congregation reminded me of the Church of my childhood. I shared with him the "delightful" image of young women rolling into Sunday mass looking as if they'd just left the club: strapless dresses, stripper shoes and all. Or maybe pre-pool party, with short shorts and spaghetti strap tops. It's nice to know there are some conservative Catholic parishes out there though. Usually it depends on who's running the show locally. I truly didn't realize there were any conservative pastors out there still active in the community. Every Catholic wedding I've been to in the past few years featured bride in mermaid gown. All considerations of modesty aside, it's dead boring seeing the same dress over and over again. 671 My brother converted to Catholicism and his congregation (and now wife) are super conservative.
Maybe you have to be raised in it to see the appeal, but they seem even more humorless and judgmental than the Pentecostals of my youth. ====================== It's my understanding that the Catholic parishes using the Anglican rite are pretty conservative. But if I'm around someone who says I have to do something because I am inherently inferior and shameful and should be made to cover?
Went to a work lunch once where a guy insisted I join him in saying grace. Here's the deal ... you ain't gonna' MAKE me do much of anything. Dude made a big deal about it ... so I called his indignation and raised him an I Don't Give A Damn. Lots of people love to use "religion" and "custom" as another means of control. Screw. That. I had a mermaid gown when I got married, but mainly because it was in stock and I was getting married in 4 months and apparently there's a 6 month wait for dresses?
I do regret it (and also my hair style, blech), but whatever. The point was to get married, not be a supermodel. Posted by: sunny-dee at February 23, 2017 01:42 PM (QAOZh) 691
632 In my experience: they won't even ask you. But if you do wear the shoes inside, the minute you leave they will freak the f*ck out and start scrubbing.

ScoggDog @687, true dat. I actually do say grace before meals, but if someone started INSISTING on it, I'd get stubborn in a heartbeat. My faith is voluntary and given to the Lord; I don't owe you a thing. (This is probably not a Biblical attitude but, whatever.)

"I finished my long trek through Star Trek last week.
I've always preferred TOS, even though, to be frank, most of the episodes after the first season are garbage (my faves are The Enterprise Incident and The Tholian Web, so take my opinion as you will). TNG had no appeal for me beyond Marina Sirtis' breasts, DS9 was nothing but darkness and angst and the less said about Voyager and Enterprise, the better. Posted by: Mary Poppins' Practically Perfect Piercing at February 23, 2017 11:57 AM (X6fMO) " Voyager had 7 of 9. That alone is redeeming. And Enterprise had the shower/decontamination scene. Posted by: Polliwog the 'Ette at February 23, 2017 01:39 PM (sEDyY) The story, which comes from a very skeevy-looking site, talks about "multiple plumes". If there really were radiation plumes, they would be dead easy to track back to the source. What they really have is widely scattered instances of I-131 occurrences, barely above the detection limit. It's not the mermaid style that's my issue, just seeing it over and over again. The one kid went to a half dozen bridal salons in her search to get the perfect mermaid dress. The other kid looked spectacular, her folks really broke the bank, especially on the Louboutins. When her dad told me how much the shoes cost, I almost spit out my iced tea. Plus the fact, getting back to original point - that I thought shoulders had to be covered during wedding ceremony. Like, they could have had a pretty shawl or bolero and then removed it at the reception. Nope. This is the new improved Beyonce-ified Cathlick church, I guess.
