Trump to Leave Obama's DACA ("Dreamers") Amnesty In Place

Deals. I make deals.

Except this particular cow seems to not have been traded for anything at all -- including any bag of allegedly magical beans.

Excuse me, what do you think you are doing being calm and rational? That is *not* part of the AoSHQ style guide.

Extreme emotionalism is required to be displayed - anger, rage, fear, despair, betrayal, and the blues - to be accompanied later by a re-reading of the source material which leads to realization, mild embarrassment, general forgetting, and the desire to move on to the next whirligig topic.

It's right there in the manual "Ace Commands - The Style Guide for the Horde: Page 37, lines 18-25.

81 Disappointed as well. The bad part is unless his messaging is on point this is going to be spun away anyways, and he really gets nothing.

However, he seems to be removing DACA and DAPA who committed crimes, even if they had to to just live in the US (identity fraud).

If he tightens his messaging and really wants to, he could go with the "I'm not deporting them, they're deporting themselves by committing felonies/not paying back taxes/not applying under Obama" Again, messaging needs to be on point.

Posted by: GrapeDrink at February 21, 2017 11:57 AM (ftwsw)

82 I'm cool with it. Tighten up illegal immigration, build the wall, and let the dreamers stay.

Not a bad outcome, compared to what we'd have with Ms. Clinton in charge - she'd be running free buses 24/7 from Mexico City to Albuquerque...

84 So DACA stays in place, but "all other illegal immigrants subject to deportation". This would seem to include eliminating DAPA and making all those people subject to deportation.

Half a loaf. Probably worth taking. The screaming and the sob stories over DACA would have been excruciating. I would think you can still boot "dreamers" if they are caught committing another crime.

87 We've got about 25 million to deal with, mostly Mexican. There are a million with outstanding deportation orders. Criminals should be an obvious priority. I want those who illegally vote to get an Express Lane for deportation. Plenty to get started on. We can leave the valedictorians until later, maybe never.

Question is how hard to go after employers, which means how hard do we encourage self-deportation, which is how you really get meaningful reductions.

Being soft on Dreamers now gets buy-in on the rest. e.g. Sanctuary Cities who resist are putting criminals who don't belong here over the rest of US

Any class in elementary negotiation will tell you that you have to have some things you're willing to trade away. For the time being, I'm going to give Trump the benefit of the doubt when it comes to negotiating.

166 I'm not surprised at all, dreamers have the sympathy factor of not having a choice in the matter, they grew up here and have no connection to their own country. The system let the parents raise foreign born kids as Americans. We did ourselves no favors by letting this go on for so long. They are no American citizens. Give them green cards and let them be resident aliens? They should not get default naturalization.

Yet they have, because they hung in there long enough.

Illegal is illegal. Goodbye, good luck, get lost, get out. Dreamers included.

Whatever. Trump has already accomplished his primary mission, beating Hillary. His secondary mission is to keep things together long enough for us to prep for the inevitable. Anything beyond that is a bonus.

172 I've said it before. Between millions of its own citizens crossing our border, and the Central Americans Mexico allows to "pass through", and the drug smuggling, we should be declaring WAR on Mexico but for the complicity of our own federal government.

But WE are collectively responsible for this mess, because it's our duly elected government that let this happen. Saying we can deport 25 million in short order is risible.

The good news is that we're starting to deal with it.

182 Here are the key graphs from the actual article. They tend to contradict the more dire maunderings from our trolls and nevertrumpers:

"U.S. President Donald Trump's administration will leave protections in place for immigrants who entered the country illegally as children, known as "dreamers," but will consider all other illegal immigrants subject to deportation, according to guidance released on Tuesday.

The Department of Homeland Security guidance is the implementation plan for executive orders on border security and immigration enforcement that Trump signed on Jan. 25, days after taking office.

The Republican president campaigned on a pledge to get tougher on the estimated 11 million illegal immigrants in the United States, playing on fears of violent crime while promising to build a wall on the border with Mexico and to stop potential terrorists from entering the country.

DHS officials, who spoke on the condition of anonymity on a conference call with reporters, said that although any immigrant in the country illegally could be deported, the agency will prioritize those deemed as posing a threat.

These include recent entrants, those convicted of a crime and people charged but not yet convicted."

My real bet is that the DREAMers "capitulation" is attempted cover for when Trump ups deportations overall.

Posted by: TheJamesMadison at February 21, 2017 12:24 PM (vur0q)

210 I heard on FBN that the Trump administration will be issuing a separate EO on DACA in a few weeks.

So the lamenting that he isn't bussing Dreamers across the border and dropping them off in Tiajuana is a little premature.

Dreamers are a problem created by the US from neglecting to have a meaningful border barrier for a couple of decades. By not enforcing immigration laws. By creating incentives for illegal immigration, by allowing chain migration, etc. etc.

Dreamers are the least dangerous of all the illegals as a group.

It stands to reason that they need to be handled separately. Trump can end the DACA program from continuing, but he still has to deal with 17 year olds who have grown up in the USA since they were infants and have zero attachment or understanding of Mexico or wherever else they were from.

They need to be dealt with individually.

The current immigration orders also have a carve out for unaccompanied minors. People are blanching that it means they can come and then will incentivize more of them.
No, it means that a separate order will allow for creating ways to return these kids directly to their parents...you can't send them back over the border to be killed, raped, etc. So they will also be dealt with, but separately.

The wall will be built starting with El Paso and two other locations, where the existing wall is non functional. Protecting the border should mean that much of the current illegal crossings will stop. Until that stops, you cannot hire enough people to keep shipping crossers back.

I'm not upset at this. I would much rather the Trump administration issue well thought out, planned immigration orders than blow out stuff that will be immediately challenged in court. The 9th has staked it's claim and until the 9th is undone and recalibrated, it's smarter to do what you can and not set up for failure.

You really do seem to have an unrealistic view of how politics works.

Might I suggest a couple of books:

The biography of James Madison written by Irving Brant.

The biography of Thomas Jefferson written by Dumas Malone.

You should get a far more accurate view of the kinds of tradeoffs that are always going to be present in political dealing in our Republic.

219 This was not surprising to me.. what are you going to do? Kick out English speaking 20 yr olds that have been hear their entire lives because they were born south of the border? It was never going to happen.

All I have hoped for is getting a wall up and preventing new ones from coming in.

However, with this announcement, watch our southern border start to crawl with new illegals trying to get in.

What disturbs me is the lack of movement on pressuring employers.. We would have mass reverse migrations back to their home countries if they all became unemployable.

This will be the same as what happens with Obamacare. The Medicaid expansion will stay in place, perhaps in another form like block grants.

225 Before too much freak out, know that DACA requires they have to have been in the US continuously since June 15, 2007 and were under the age of 16 at the time they entered.

Everyone who's entered after that date is ineligible--a small and shrinking pool.

I suspect the truth about DACA isn't who is eligible, it's the abuse in that so many phony claims are filed. And, I'm sure, the intentional delay in processing all claims.

He can clamp down on that and still say he's keeping it.

The text of the article doesn't support the DACA will remain in place, what with the anyone here illegally is subject to deportation.

II. Where's the primary source document? If this is some kind of guidance document, link to it so I can read for myself what it says.

C. And I should know this, aren't the DACA protections still under court challenge? Leaving in place until resolution would be an arguably proper choice.

242 79 AKA, this story is bullshit, like all the other "anonymous sources" stories we've put out over the last eight months.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Indeed, it seems that way to me. If you read the linked article, the only "fact" they present is an anonymous account from someone in DHS that says a letter came out prioritizing the immigration / deportation enforcement and the "DREAMers" are low on the list.
Big whoop. That certainly doesn't say much to me. There is an actual program enacted by Obama for staying in the country. If you're status as an illegal is still subject to deportation, just not a priority, I wouldn't be too keen on sticking around. I sure as hell wouldn't think I had obtained double secret legal status.
Honestly, the fact that the link goes to "reuters" should be a tipoff.
Yet another example of our side letting THEIR SIDE set the agenda. The last thing the right needs is to be attacking Trump over some perceived slight via anonymous sources at DHS, as reported by Reuters.
243 Gets nothing?
Actually, I think he gets a lot: goodwill from the middle-of-the-roaders. (Not from the hard right, but he doesn't need a lot from them right now, and not from the hard left, because he'll never get anything from them.)
And he gets a lot more because he asked nothing in return - so he's just seen as "doing the right thing" by a lot of those middle-of-the-roaders.
His cost is very little, and I think the potential gains are substantial. Trump sees the long game: first 2018 mid-terms; then 2020. He knows prosperity, unity, and a lot of good things flow from subjective perceptions. The economy grows and prospers when consumer confidence is high - actual productivity and prices are obviously important, but consumer confidence leads to spending- and that leads to prosperity.
If he increases his own approval numbers, consumer confidence grows. He's a smart guy.
245 Keep in mind a Dreamer can simultaneously be a deportation target under any of the priorities that have been released, including criminal conviction, engaging in criminal gangs, or defrauding federal programs. (Although it's relevant to determine whether the "dreamer" was actually the defrauding party, or just the recipient of the benefit.) The media will find perfect little suburban, good looking, English-fluent honor roll students to hold up as "Dreamers" but the 15 year old runner & future gunner for MS-13 who's felon daddy got him and the baby-momma across the border at age 5 is a "dreamer" too. Different 'dreams from their fathers,' so to speak. (ugh.)
_______
I'm not ready to toss Trump over this, I always sort of knew the Dreamers were probably staying, but my fear is, the road of least resistance on immigration would be to talk tough in a campaign and then do very little. Like every other Republican President. Actually tackling this problem is a bruising fight.
So if this is a long term position he doesn't change despite promising on Day 1 to rescind it, we're not off to a good start.
Posted by: Maritime at February 21, 2017 12:38 PM (J591N)
248 Thinking further on leverage from keeping DACA:
It requires they have no felonies, no major misdemeanors or no more than 3 minor misdemeanors.
Say:
"ICE will not consider DACA applications from any law enforcement jurisdiction deemed not to cooperate with ICE by refusing to provide full criminal records."
You know, sanctuary cities.
Posted by: RoyalOil at February 21, 2017 12:39 PM (AmMfi)
249 Maritime -
I don't recall a promise to rescind DACA. I recall, generally, a promise to strengthen the borders, extreme-vet immigrants, attack illegal entries, deport illegals with criminal records, etc. He hasn't backed away from the core values at all - much to the chagrin of many.
You do have to give an inch here or there in order to allay fears of too much strength in the executive. I think he's got his eye on the ball.
Not only is he smart, he's gutsy.
Posted by: One-eyed Cat Peepin' in the Seafood Store at February 21, 2017 12:42 PM (gzPc2)
250 And they will vote. Democrat. Not saying letting them stay is a good or bad decision, but they vote now and will take this as a green light to continue to vote. As well as add to their ranks. Citizens or not, they will act as such and will not be restrained.
Posted by: gracepc at February 21, 2017 12:45 PM (OU4q6)
251 Grapepc: The point isn't whether they vote or not - aren't enough to be material.
The point is how Trump is perceived by the much larger voting public. The strategy is to get large blocs of voters to start coming to grips with the proposition that Trump is not evil - that he has redeeming social value.
Posted by: One-eyed Cat Peepin' in the Seafood Store at February 21, 2017 12:54 PM (gzPc2)
252 Well, not happy (if true, which is probably 50/50 given the current state of our media), but priorities.
Build the wall
Get rid of the illegals in prison.
Get rid of the illegals who are welfare drains.
Get rid of motor-voter, same-day registration, require RealID, etc.
Then deal with the dreamers.
254 18 I'll definitely trade the dreamers for real, immediate, enforcement and discouragement for illegal immigration.
Deporting the dreamers really is a non-starter. And giving some leeway on this takes a big cudgel out of the left's hand.
Posted by: Chupacabra at February 21, 2017 11:47 AM (o/Ar3)
^^^
This. Not exactly happy, but I think the leeway is extremely useful. After all, look at the situation with the Travel Ban and the way that was rhetorically exploited.
Yes, it's true anything can be thus exploited. But I think in this case there'd be enormous diminishing returns on tracking down the "dreamers", plus Trump gets the valuable image of looking moderate by making a "concession" that's been in the works for months anyway.
Posted by: KABOOM at February 21, 2017 01:08 PM (tO3dn)
256 You cannot look at Trump's Cabinet and Court picks, especially Sessions, DeVos, Pruitt Gorsuch and doubt that Trump's core values are rock-solid conservative. Showing he has a little heart won't hurt.
Posted by: One-eyed Cat Peepin' in the Seafood Store at February 21, 2017 01:13 PM (gzPc2)
257 I want a damn wall (a physical wall), I want to have solid immigration laws going forward (a legal wall), and I want the administration (and the next administration, and the one after that, etc.) to prevent more people from coming in illegally (an executive wall).
As long as I'm going to get my three walls, I'm fine with Trump showing some kindness to people who were, let's be blunt, invited here with open arms by the establishment (not by "we the people," but "we the people" have been out of power from 1989-2016). We know the establishment politicians encouraged them to come here, offering the promise of jobs and welfare. I don't think we're obligated to keep the Dreamers, but neither is it imperative to kick them out. Most of them are not bad people. As long as they stay out of trouble, and are productive members of society, and as long as I get my THREE WALLS (physical, legal, executive), I would actually prefer that Trump lets them stay. They've been jerked around by the establishment as much as we have.
The only way to truly fix the mess created by the establishment is to have border security going forward (otherwise, there will be a never-ending flow of people whom it would be mean to kick out, and whether we kick them out or not, either way it's a mess). As long as we get that fix, one last amnesty is, at minimum, tolerable, if not preferable.
259 I would let the nonfelon "dreamers" stay in exchange for the following:
1. They can never become citizens AND
2. National voter ID
Posted by: Flowerbelle1 at February 21, 2017 01:25 PM (AkAvN)
260 You forgot the ", FOR NOW." bit at the end.
I can see in the works that all those bastard states who are giving in-state tuition to illegals but not to American citizens are going to be in a bit of trouble because those "students" will have benefitted from public dollars at the expense of U.S. citizens and will be in line for deportation soon.
His list of priority deportations is growing - no longer just violent criminals, we are talking about gross misdemeanors and regular misdemeanors now.
Quite impressive.
269 Classic progressive bait and switch. Present the most sympathetic case - the guy who's been here, through no fault of his own, for 30 years and has known no other home - get human beings with hearts to agree not to deport people in that category, then immediately lump everyone into that category. Since we have no way of knowing, by definition, when undocumented people arrived, you can guarantee they all arrived as children. La Raza is handing out scripts with the magic words to tell ICE as we speak.
