My understanding is that on the steppes there is a pool of rodents that carry the plague fleas that carry the plague.
When the weather changes for wetter and cooler temperature, the habitat for these rodents expands. This also happens in the US Southwest with plague affected prairie dogs and in Central Mexico with some sort of corona virus and packrats, but the way. As the habitat expands it brings them into contact with both people and with other species that can harbor the infected rat fleas. As the disease spreads by rats, it infects people, and can be carried by people. The major issue with the plague and fleas is that as it reproduces in the fleas' digestive tract it blocks the fleas' ability to digest, and the fleas become ravenous and will attempt to feed and infect not only other rats, but also other mammals that they normally don't attack, like people. This spreads the disease at a greater speed than would be normal. When the plague affects the lymph system it creates blockages and eventual necrosis at the lymph nodes which are the symptomatic buboes. The plague can also affect the blood, which is quickly fatal, and can also affect the lungs, at which point the coughing up of blood and infected mucous can make person-to-person infection possible. But I would note one excerpt from that paper: Despite these results, a debate continues regarding whether Y. pestis really was the causative agent of the Black Death, as summarized by Byrne [15]. Some epidemiologists and historians have denied this conclusion due to inconsistencies between the clinical and epidemiological characteristics of plague in historical records and those observed in India in the early 20th century [16]-[19]. and right after: Even the aDNA studies have not been considered to be conclusive because other teams were initially unable to find ancient Y. pestis DNA in human teeth from plague pits in central and north Europe [21], thus supporting the interpretation that the massive human deaths that occurred in these areas at the time of the second pandemic were not caused by Y. pestis. TENNESSEE BILL MAKES IT OK TO DRIVE OVER PROTESTERS WHO BLOCK TRAFFIC Have you grown tired of the endless public disruptions which the modern American left --undoubtedly the sorest losers in the history of our solar system-- have foisted upon a largely peaceful and law-abiding public since Donald Trump's election? When you see a gaggle of these smelly, violent losers blocking traffic, did you ever wish that you were behind the wheel of a car and could "accidentally" plow through about a dozen of them with no repercussions? If so, friend, Tennessee is looking like a mighty friendly place these days. A pair of Republican lawmakers have introduced a bill which would indemnify drivers from being sued by any protesters who may have accidentally incurred injuries while committing the crime of obstruction. If the "actions leading to the injury were willful," drivers can still be sued, so it appears that the trick here is to make it all look like a huge and tragic misunderstanding. World War Z
Good movie or not Posted by: Sebastian Melmoth at February 19, 2017 02:22 PM (IDPbH) World War Z is a wonderful illustration of how Hollywood views Totalitarianism/Fascism. 1) don't be loud and attract attention of the mindless screaming mob that wants to tear you apart and infect your family and kill everything; 2) if we take PART of the infection into ourselves we can live in the infected mindless killer mob's forbearance (and this is the actual thinking behind the development and adoption of Fascism by the Italian state, by the way) justifying the attitude that; 3) fighting and killing them all is impossible Other than that, a terrible movie that I didn't like filled with idiots acting out of no realistic thought pattern other than to get into preventable trouble to avoid actual plotting and storytelling on part of the writers. ++++++++++++++++ I would point out it also states that a wall is what protected Israel so long, right? A pair of Republican lawmakers have introduced a bill which would indemnify drivers from being sued by any protesters who may have accidentally incurred injuries while committing the crime of obstruction.
Posted by: logprof at February 19, 2017 02:25 PM (GsAUU) I'm still unsure about this - a driver would be immune to civil suits from the obstructors, but it doesn't protect you from criminal prosecution for reckless endangerment or vehicular manslaughter or anything, yeah? It's time for us to recognize that we are no longer the country that elected people like George Washington and Abraham Lincoln president. Our progress has taken us far beyond those days when transgenders were sent to the end of the urinal and presidents like Thomas Jefferson ordered our military to oppress Jihadis in places like Libya instead of assisting them, as I was proud to do.
To honor our new America we need to not be afraid to let go of the past and step into the future. In that spirit, our Presidents Day of the past should be honorably retired after long and distinguished service and replaced with a new holiday, reflecting our new values. I am honored that it has been suggested that that holiday should honor me, and be chosen to coincide with the day selected as my date of birth on the birth certificate presented to the public, which document I had nothing to do with, never touched, never even looked at and is completely protected by attorney-client privilege. Failing to do that would deny the humanity of all the diverse peoples and genders who make up today's America and be an insult to all the soldiers, sailors, marines, airpersons and corpsemen who went out there and fought on my behalf. It's not who we are. Posted by: Barack H. Obama at February 19, 2017 02:30 PM (hA1V+) 192

Good movie or not Posted by: Sebastian Melmoth at February 19, 2017 02:22 PM (IDPbH) It's okay. Not horrible. Just confused about what it wants to be. Speaking of fashion, that white suit Melania wore when the Netanyahus visited was gorgeous. Clean lines with some distinctive, sophisticated tailoring. The height of chic.
I was amazed to find out it was a Karl Lagerfeld because I mostly detest the haute couture stuff he has done at Chanel. It's pretentious, overworked, and often downright ugly. But then this was a CUSTOM piece designed for Melania's taste. I have to admit that Lagerfeld hit it out of the park. BTW, some of you may remember Lagerfeld getting in deep trouble back in 2009 or 2010 for absolutely trashing Michelle Obama's style. Being very gay and very head-of-Chanel, he got away with it ---in the French press at least. But I noticed that Michelle, who wore British and Italian designers quite often, never wore so much as a scrap of froggery after that. Not even Louboutin shoes. She was my constant companion for 14 years. Would paw at me whenever I sat here at my desk. She slept glued to my side last night. She saw me through my mother's death and son's deployment to Afghanistan.
She was our "puppy cat," loved greeting everyone who came to the house, would flip over for belly rugs. Just yesterday, I was taking a bubble bath, and she sat on the side of the tub batting at the bubbles and rubbing her head against mine. I've never felt this way over losing a pet, I guess because she went downhill so quickly. I wasn't prepared. World War Z
Good movie or not Posted by: Sebastian Melmoth at February 19, 2017 02:22 PM (IDPbH) You could do worse. It's not going to change your life or anything, but it's entertaining. The book has way more detail about how it starts with Chinese being bitten while salvaging a drowned village that fell afoul of a dam construction project, Russia turning into a neo-Tsarist theocracy, what happens in the mainland US, the asshole who got rich selling a fake vaccine and then fled to a compound in Antarctica or something, the South African strategy, and a bunch of other stuff that would be too much to cram into a movie. On the other hand, Brooks tries way to hard to make every interviewee speak in a folksy stereotype of their nationality, which is kind of irritating. Fun story (interviewing survivors years after the war), but stilted writing. Posted by: hogmartin at February 19, 2017 02:56 PM (8nWyX) 267

I also heard that often when cats sense they're at death's door they'll run away a few days beforehand. We had many cats just plain disappear, so I wondered if that was the reason.
Posted by: logprof at February 19, 2017 03:19 PM (GsAUU) They also like to take vacations, so it's hard to tell. You wouldn't think a cat could be impossible to locate for two days in a one-bedroom apartment, but then you find he's made a little nest under the dresser, and he's all "do you mind?". The next day, he's back to lounging in front of the patio door. And when you have more than one, the vet will ask "is he eating and drinking and using the litter box?" and... well... someone is, so I don't really know. It can be really hard to distinguish sick cat from cat functioning as designed. Posted by: hogmartin at February 19, 2017 03:28 PM (8nWyX) 355

Do We Celebrate Hillary Clinton Too Much? (MJ)
After all, she's Not President, and we only celebrate current and former Presidents on the third Monday in February. By my count, that's 364 to 1... ++++ I'm not sure I follow the math. We don't celebrate Hillary on President's Day, since she's not, nor has she ever been, a president. But, we also don't celebrate her on the other 364 days of the year either, since she is the Hildebeast. By my count, that's 0 out of 365. Unless we can figure out how to drive that zero down to a negative number, I don't think we are celebrating Hillary too much. Posted by: Anon Y. Mous at February 19, 2017 03:31 PM (R+30W) 362

Posted by: rickl at February 19, 2017 03:41 PM (sdi6R) Thank you, hon. The worst part was having to take her to the weekend pet ER. They took her to the back to give her oxygen, and then we had to wait for OVER AN HOUR, for them to bring us back to euthanize her. I'm sure she was scared to death in a strange place. When they brought us to the "euthanasia room" (complete with a box of tissues), they handed her to me and she immediately began purring and talking to me that she wanted to GO HOME. I held her in my arms in the warm blanket they had her in, and my husband, son and I kissed her goodbye. She kept looking at me, saying "I WANT TO GO HOME." It was at that point, we told them to put her to sleep. I held her, kissing her on her sweet head, until she passed. And I broke down like a crying bitch. I'm still crying. Bar Rescue.....
I understand the show wanting to have major drama, but I seriously have to wonder how these people get a liquor license in the first place, and how they never seem to be shut down by the health department. Does anyone else think John Tapper looks like the cartoon hound from the 40s, Droopy? Posted by: Jen at February 19, 2017 04:11 PM (cWhln) 433

Jane, I'm so sorry about your cat. She had you in her heart, and you have her in yours.
To paraphrase Will Rogers, if cats and dogs don't go to heaven, we want to go where they are. Virtual hugs. Posted by: Duncanthrax at February 19, 2017 05:10 PM (DMUuz) 443

The Barack Obama Presidential Center in Chicago could require a $1.5 billion endowment, its architects say, three times what was raised for the George W. Bush Presidential Center in Dallas.
