Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | Polls: Majority Thinks Trump is a "Strong and Decisive Leader" Who "Keeps His Promises;" Public Supports Ending Sanctuary Cities and Deporting Criminals -- Including HispanicsThese are the real polls, not the fake ones. A Gallup poll released Monday found clear majorities of Americans believe President Trump "keeps his promises, is a strong and decisive leader, and can bring about changes the country needs." When asked to evaluate whether the phrase "keeps his promises" applies to Trump, 62 percent of respondents responded affirmatively. Fifty-nine percent replied affirmatively when questioned on whether he is a "strong and decisive leader" and 53 percent agreed that he "can bring about the change this country needs."And it turns out that despite the claims of the DC Overclass like Bill Kristol, border enforcement, far from being an election-loser, is popular. The poll I'm really interested in is the Direction of the Country poll. RCP has a composite that they have been tracking for years. Not once in the Obama years did the majority of the country say the country was headed in the right direction. Not once.
It's been climbing since last summer but the pace seems to have picked up or at worst continued it's ascent since Trump won. Still a big deficit but it's closing. I don't expect Trump to ever be super popular, country is way to polarized. But he could end up the polar opposite of Obama who was personally popular while his policies were not. I keep telling this to my family, especially my mom, who's worried about all the ruckus the left is stirring up:
It doesn't matter. The moonbats really are a small minority of the US population, they just look larger because the own the megaphones of the crooked media, hollywood and academia. And they are LOSING. Badly. Right now, when the average person thinks of the democratic party they see a masked thug in a Che Guevara T-shirt setting fire to a cop car, BLM protesters blocking traffic on the highway, and college snowflakes protesting free speech. They've become the party of unisex bathroms, riots and cartoonish orwellian totalitarianism. The average american, black, white, hispanic, gay, straight, whoever--does NOT want that. They want prosperity, safe streets and freedom. The left is bleeding support from sane, every day average people. We are seeing their death throes. It cannot be healthy, not that I care, for a bloatation device like Moore to rage daily and eat his Dorito's by the fist-full. Jeebus the pace here is fast today - so, sorry if I repeat a point already made above.
Several of us have been whining for a long time that, aside from being obviously the only intelligent and moral policy, border security and deportation/no amnesty was a one-sided issue politically. An open door waiting to be pushed (hmmm, did I screw up that metaphor? not sure) Another thing, ace. How does this popularity of Trump policies (incl. some of the most "controversial!" ones) square with an approval rating of 40%, also from Gallup? Recall the affirmative action idiot had approvals in mid 50s, while his main policies were lucky to get 30% approval, towards the end. That "disconnection" was easily attributable to racism/celebrity/LIV behavior and mindsets. The disconnect in favor of Teh Donald's policies yet against his overall popularity is harder to figure. Go read the whole thing, but Greenwald gives my schadenboner schadenboners:
But cheering for the CIA and its shadowy allies to unilaterally subvert the U.S. election and impose its own policy dictates on the elected president is both warped and self-destructive. Empowering the very entities that have produced the most shameful atrocities and systemic deceit over the last six decades is desperation of the worst kind. Demanding that evidence-free, anonymous assertions be instantly venerated as Truth - despite emanating from the very precincts designed to propagandize and lie - is an assault on journalism, democracy, and basic human rationality. And casually branding domestic adversaries who refuse to go along as traitors and disloyal foreign operatives is morally bankrupt and certain to backfire on those doing it. Beyond all that, there is no bigger favor that Trump opponents can do for him than attacking him with such lowly, shabby, obvious shams, recruiting large media outlets to lead the way. When it comes time to expose actual Trump corruption and criminality, who is going to believe the people and institutions who have demonstrated they are willing to endorse any assertions no matter how factually baseless, who deploy any journalistic tactic no matter how unreliable and removed from basic means of ensuring accuracy? I have said over and over again here and other places: amnesty supporters can put out all the polls they want, the revealed preferences of voters are decidedly anti-amnesty and pro-enforcement of the law.
Which is why, despite polls, politicians are loath to try and implement their open borders preferences openly. They will sneak and lie and let Obama illegally implement their preferences but they know they will be pilloried (or worse, voted out of office) if they try and jam through the amnesty they and their big donors want. Conventional wisdom amongst the chattering class in DC including the thousands of useless "strategists" and "consultants" has been that deporting illegals was one of those infamous 3rd rails of politics. Both sides of the aisle agreed on this because none of them has been listening to us. Trump did. Recall the affirmative action idiot had approvals in mid 50s, while his main policies were lucky to get 30% approval, towards the end. ______ Also, don't forget that the big money bundlers in Republican politics were rabidly pro-amnesty. The Koch Bros, Sheldon Adelson, Chamber of Commerce type groups, etc. Money doesn't win elections, votes do, but Republicans played this game where they told Republican primary voters what they wanted to hear and then ignored it when they got to Dc. Ignoramus may be right (about the horses' heads thing).
One thing's for sure: one of the many serious unaddressed disasters of the Bush years was the mutiny and criminality of elements in the intel community, that went unpunished. Recall the two huge surveillance program leaks. "Leaks" is such a benign, misleading term in such cases - how about felonious revelation of highly sensitive surveillance programs that were literally yielding life-saving and battle-changing information, in war-time? The sort of thing that, generally, without exaggeration, resulted in execution in all times prior to present day. THAT serious. I still can't believe that Dubya, at the time of crimes, didn't have every single person on the very limited need-to-know list detained and polygraphed and scared to an inch of their lives. And that's the key today, as many said in the thread below. The massive, unprecedented crimes under the Espionage Act at State under Obama are now being followed by comparable crimes directed against a new administration. That administration had better treat it like the criminal mutiny that it is. Their own interests of course call for it. But it's to the point that the country's very institutions are going to be swallowed up by lawlessness of this nature, at this level. Posted by: rhomboid at February 14, 2017 05:10 PM (QDnY+) 259

Agree with all above re disconnect between Trump policy approval and "overall" approval %s, I alluded to one explanation for Obama's positive disconnect.
Maritime I think nailed it - there's so much (mostly mindless, or artificial) negativity associated with Trump's personality, we have the opposite disconnect with him. Just a guess, but I think he's fine with that, as long as he accomplishes his goals. Because his ego seems much more caught up in accomplishing things, than just being liked (unlike his predecessor and many others). And, of course - unlike seemingly most of the political class, esp. the GOP Beltway set - he understands the way to true "popularity" is governing well. ------- I think Obama only got high approval numbers by fake polling and no critism in the MSN. Scalia's Ghost and redbanzai both on the right track WRT spawn of illegals born in the US, and their future rights.
But I wonder what's the best we can practically hope for. With the essential dissolution of the rule of law in the US (incl. words, history, even statutory construction guidelines being deemed meaningless whenever convenient), not sure we have a chance to see the 14th fixed. If we can remove most of the illegals, over the next few years, with all the different needed moves (internal enforcement, border security, restoring rule of law vs. state/city lawlessness, entitlement reform), I'm not THAT concerned about the downstream 2nd-generation/"Dreamer" effects.
