Per a 2015 report, a year at Georgetown University cost $66,971. That is a significant amount of money to be taught slavery is good. Slavery good, forced sexual relations even better.

“Are you more morally mature than the Prophet of God?” Brown says. “No, you’re not.”

So, there you have it. If Muhammad held slaves, how bad could slavery really be?

It’s a challenging point, actually: if the Prophet behaved in a certain way, who are Muslims today to stand in judgment of him and what he did? If we say that slavery is evil, are we not implicitly condemning the Prophet as an evildoer? Can a Muslim do that and still be a good Muslim? I don’t know

Traveling from the Left to the Right is a journey. It starts with one step.

Chadwick Moore, a 33-year-old journalist who lives in Williamsburg, had been a lifelong liberal. Then, last September, he penned a profile for Out magazine of Milo Yiannopoulos — a controversial alt-right extremist who is an outspoken critic of feminism, Muslims and gay rights (despite being openly gay himself). Although the Out story didn’t take a positive stance — or any stance — on Yiannopoulos, Moore found himself pilloried by fellow Democrats and ostracized by longtime friends.

What is good for the goose that identifies as a gander.........Fighting fire lunacy with lunacy.

One especially audacious budding politician from the University of Sydney, Alex Fitton, identified as a woman in late 2016 to win one of two student leadership positions. The student body’s constitution prohibited two cis-gender males from holding the office. Fitton represented the Liberal Party, which, confusingly for Americans in particular, is Australia’s main (nominally) conservative party. “Liberal” in this context means classically liberal, in the mould of the French political theorist Montesquieu and others.

Funny this came up in tonight's ONT.

Today I took a quick trip to Ralphs, and happened to bump into my 11-year-old niece's best girlfriend and her mom.

Said young girl's name? Layla.

Yes.

Because of who Muhammed is according to Islam, you have to accept that slavery, pedophilia, and committing genocide is ok...if you believe in Islam.

Compare the life of Muhammed and Jesus.

That isn't to say that Muhammed was substantially worse then your average Arabic brigand of the time...he wasn't. But that is a pretty low bar.

174 All right, when did *they* change the salute to the Christian flag?

Today was Boy Scout Sunday at church. After the Pledge of Allegiance came the aforementioned salute. I started to rattle it off -- learned it as a kid in the '60s in Bible school -- then shut down as the words veered off into something I'd never heard.

Gone was "one brotherhood, uniting all mankind." Is that forbidden now?

If so, glad my sons are both done with Scouting, having earned their Eagle badges.

Watch out now, take care
Beware of falling swingers
Dropping all around you
The pain that often mingles
In your fingertips
Beware of darkness

Watch out now, take care
Beware of the thoughts that linger
Winding up inside your head
The hopelessness around you
In the dead of night

Beware of sadness
It can hit you
It can hurt you
Make you sore and what is more
That is not what you are here for

Watch out now, take care
Beware of soft shoe shufflers
Dancing down the sidewalks
As each unconscious sufferer
Wanders aimlessly
Beware of Maya

Watch out now, take care
Beware of greedy leaders
They take you where you should not go
While Weeping Atlas Cedars
They just want to grow, grow and grow
Beware of darkness

The MSM really lost its connection to middle America when Charles Kuralt retired. He spent many years traveling around "Red America" seeing the sights, sounds and people and that made the people inside CBS News at least aware of what people in flyover were like. Once he retired, they lost that connection.

Okay, this is ONT, I guess I can tell this.

When I was a teen, in SC, I worked with this one older (to me, he might have been late 20s, early 30s) black guy who had no money, always wore the same clothes that he worked on cars in, was unkempt - but every day at work, he was dropped off by a different woman.

We (the other young guys working there) were impressed. How do you do it, Willie?

It's because I eat mish (not what he said). N-words don't eat no mish, I eat mish, I got a woman every night.

it's pretty simple really,
stroke your relationaship as if everything means Your collective family survival.

311 One difference I've seen between male and female sex drives, is that the more a man is stressed and flustered, generally the more he wants sex, whereas to women their sex drive gets stronger when they don't feel *any* stress and frustration.

I think this is part of the "We are on vacation let's have sex constantly" thing that women seem to have...

All this makes sense from an evolutionary viewpoint - but it can make things go bad fast on the sexual front when things are going bad in other parts of a couple's life...

327 We play a lot of music in our house and our son heard Clapton at a very early age and loved him. We have video of him on the couch in a onesie, playing a tiny plastic guitar and wearing my husbands sunglasses at about 10 months old. He sang Layla constantly and constantly wanted to watch video of Clapton concerts. We took him to his first concert at 15, on his birthday, and it was Clapton. He still talks about it

If you're a man in 8th grade, you have bigger problems than getting chicks.
As I recall, there's someone who makes regular appearances on lonely hearts ONTs who is very much in demand for booty calls, but not for relationships. So, technical proficiency alone isn't going to cut it. Soulless sex is not enough.
Seriously, oral sex isn't an art form. If you enjoy it, you'll be good at it. If you don't, faggedaboudit.

My theory?

The girl always wants someone. Hence sexual rendezvous guy.

So... she's keeping sexual rendezvous guy in case new guy doesn't work out.

Posted by: willow at February 12, 2017 11:22 PM (R7cwD)

No.

There is a dam. The dam is fine.

There is a concrete spillway, which was damaged, but is still working. It provides relief if the water is flowing over the dam.

Now, there is a backup spillway for when there is even more water. The water going over it eroded a lot of soil below it and they were afraid it would fail (it hasn't). They are shoring it up but who knows.

Now, if it *does* fail, that would be bad and flood Oroville, but it's *not* the same as the Dam failing. The Dam is much bigger (taller).

Interesting. I used to use econometrics as a counter example in my global warming arguments - that the economy is a far simpler system than the Earth's climate, more money and brainpower have been poured into modeling it than the global warming nuts could even dream about ... and, yet, they still have lousy records of economic forecasts.

Good subject, though. Good luck on your final.

Normal interaction requires people to get out and do things, and a lot of them don't want to do that. The women who are out at social events are usually there with boyfriends/husbands.

The swipe-right thing is supposed to be easier since you aren't directly rejected. The system only tells you if you both swiped-right on each other. But when you never get a match, it's almost worse than not getting a response on a normal dating site.

439 "In the end, I couldn't leave the kids and she begged me not to go. Gulted me into sticking around. As I mentioned, I am an idiot. With great kids."

You're not an idiot - you sacrificed your own happiness for the sake of those who were weaker than you and who depended on you. You did what a real man should do. And they, your kids, would have been hurt badly if you had done differently. A lot of people lie to themselves and say that isn't so, but it is.

What comes after, comes after. Your duty to another adult is far different than your duty to children. Adults are supposed to be able to take care of themselves if they have to.

452 Oh, that autumn road picture is just delectable.

Left work at 2pm on a Friday last summer to drive from Michigan to Hunlock Creek PA for my sister's wedding the next day. At around 10pm, I called my mom (who was already there at my aunt's house) from a rest area, after driving through heavy rain squalls with semi trailers through the dark with cliffs on either side, advising that I was tired and might spend the night in a sleeping bag in the back of the car and catch up in the morning. I pressed on (which might not have been the safest idea) and the rain let up once I got off I-80, and once I hit the mountain roads:

1. I had a full tank of gas in a manual Subaru Impreza
2. I was suddenly fully awake at midnight on dry pavement winding up and down hills through the woods
3. A little "professional driver on a closed course: do not attempt" ticker was hovering at the bottom of my vision for some reason

Kinda wish we had roads like that in lower Michigan.

Posted by: navybrat at February 13, 2017 12:12 AM (w7KSn)

490 The risk is less at Oroville, but there was erosion at the emergency overflow, and they say the threat is not gone even when the water stops flowing over the top. (but greatly diminished I'd expect)

One guy said if it eroded back up to the lake he said it could dump 30 feet from the lake. Not sure how he got that, but perhaps in area the lake is only 30' deep. There are 15,476 acres of lake, so that would be "a lot of water".

But they are dumping big bags of rock, and it is likely contained. But if water has found a way through the ground, not just over the top, that could keep eroding and be more catastrophic (even with the big dam intact). That seems to be the main risk at the moment, but much less risk than a few hours ago.

at least that's my take on what I heard.

It's good to have goals in life. Mine is to eat about a pound of those godawful disgusting circus peanut candies just before a meeting, so when someone says "hey hogmartin, what do you think of this plan?" I can hork an unending pile of horrible orange foam across the table.

Nah.

I'd rent the Pasadena Fairgrounds Arena, and pay extra to have 'em tamp the arena soil down to a hard surface.

And then set up a hundred or so kitchen islands, and turn Teh Horde loose on a cookingfest, and show off the best of what all they can do.

Later that same evening, bring in the for-hire bartenders or hell, just back up the wholesale liquor trucks.

Bet there'd be some the best eats ever, all under the same roof at the same time.

Question for Moron travelers - which hotels are your favorite to stay at on the Vegas strip?

A friend was asking me for advice and its been a couple of years since I've gone.

Posted by: 18-1 at February 13, 2017 12:22 AM (aZq03)

We generally like to stay off the Strip at the Orleans.Great poker room. Movie theater and bowling alley upstairs. Caters to locals.Although, recently, these damned 'resort fees' are really starting to piss me off.
Last time there we slummed it and stayed way-way off strip at Arizona Charlie's. It was ok, but we don't demand luxury. The Rio is pretty nice.
We typically have a car when in Vegas.
If you don't have a car....Then my experience is with the Clown (Circus Circus), Excalibur, Luxor, Planet Hollywood, Harrah's, and MGM, in order of lowest budget, then increasing.
I sense that the Mirage, Treasure Island, Monte Carlo are between Harrah's and MGM on the scale. And Caesar's, Venetian, Bellagio, and Wynn are more luxurious than MGM.
I have also stayed at the Imperial Palace, and Bourbon Street, but alas, they are gone!

a couple miles later, the red lights make me pull over and stop. the officer comes up to my window, and sees how old daughter is. was checking he said if she shoulda been in the car seat. (guess it was a slow night)

he asked for license and registration. I lean over on my right side to get into the glove box for reg., and my body lets out a loud raspberry. embarrassed, i just stayed where I was for a minute.

But in the 1970s she was still young, so her Conan comic "Child of Sorcery" is literally a Princess In The Tower fanfic. Funny stuff.

I cashed once, something like 78th or so in a Limit Holdem event, for about $3300. That was a hoot! At the same time, a buddy of mine was at a final table for the tournament from the previous day. His cash payout was higher than mine, lol.

Yeah, I wanted to join the WSOP Millionaire Maker, but it's $1500 to enter. The Colossus OTOH is almost $1000 less to enter and if you can work your way into the money, even if you're not really close to the final table, it sounds like some real cash can be made.

Would like to give it a try, anyway. If I bust I bust.

First of all, that's not really a funny joke. But it certainly is at someone's expense - the person you're telling it to. They laugh (not at this joke, but one like it) and slap their forehead and say, "Oh, how silly of me not to see that!"

Of course, just because a joke is at someone's expense doesn't mean that they can't get a kick out of it, anyway. Most well-adjusted people have no problem laughing at their own foibles and shortcomings.

Sarcasm can be playful or mean. Used in a hateful way, like hateful words of any kind, can be seriously damaging to a relationship.

Posted by: Anon Y. Mous at February 13, 2017 12:49 AM (R+30W)

Meh. Sarcasm is just one more way of communicating. It's not qualitatively different than speaking literally ... and most people don't speak literally, anyway. Better to have someone be sarcastic and actually address a point rather than a person who just beats around the bush the whole time and will never actually say what's going on or what they're really thinking of.

But if someone farts and I say, "Gee ... that's nice ..." a normal person understands that and is not all butt-hurt that I don't enjoy their farts. If they are they can go find someone who revels in their farting and the two of them can live happily ever after.

Posted by: Miley, the Duchess at February 13, 2017 01:44 AM (tHwdc)

I'll go off on a bit of a post here. So many of today's cultural cornerstones seem to be about propping up or inflating people's psychological issues.

I remember reading one time that one theory on why women have cravings while pregnant is to make sure of their mates. If they ask for some strange food, and the guy gets up without complaint to find pineapple pizza with ham at 3am- it is a good bet that he gives a crap about her and the baby.

Valentine's seems like that to me- but for not pregnant women too! It is about reassurance. Considering the pervasiveness of the culture that all men are hounds who bang anything that moves when they can get away with it, it is not hard to see that grand gestures built around Valentines or a marriage proposal are a thing.

Posted by: FenelonSpoke at February 13, 2017 01:53 AM (fDdVG)

623 In addition, the courtship rituals of the past filled a lot of these gaps in psychology. A guy who will woo, take you out to dinner, and ask to marry you before expecting you to put out is showing how seriously he treats you the woman. I am not saying in the past that people did not fool around before the ceremony, but there was at least the idea that the guy had a good job, could provide for the woman and any potential children, etc.

It also brings up questions about female 'empowerment' in that light. A woman who the guy will go through hell/slay a dragon to marry before having sex with her? Or a woman who has sex with the guy on the first date?

But those are just symbols of a thing, and not the thing itself. My dear departed and I had Valentine's Day every day, because we loved each other deeply and needed no symbols of reassurance. Gifts in general weren't a big deal.
"Love constitutes the value." This was printed on a mysterious little charm that he gave me once, that came from one of his ancestors. About an inch in diameter, with a mirror on one side and these words on the other. I have no idea what it came from, but it was spelled "conftitutes" so it is no doubt very old.

Very true. I am saying modern society sucks and we do more damage to people when we play into their deepest fears and insecurities.

You are right though. The feeling is the point, the act is merely the symbol for the feeling. It is the feeling we want, and what is important. People are doing it now because they think the symbol is the thing itself.

Oh, women have screwed the pooch completely by relinquishing the role of gatekeeper, and as a result everything has gone to hell. You're completely right about that, as well as the past requirement that men be serious, and present themselves as good providers and ostensibly dependable.
An old-fashioned and respectful ideal.

Posted by: Miley, the Duchess at February 13, 2017 02:12 AM (tHwdc)

634 St Valentine was a martyr for his faith because he was a Christian in a permissive society and he was a Priest performing marriages in a sacred setting. It got morphed into romantic love-which is not a bad thing-but the idea of laying down your life for something you believe in because of the Holy Spirit got completely lost:

Amen! And the whole wedding thing. "Every girl dreams about her wedding day and has been planning it since she was 12." I mean, are they serious? Am I the freak here? I was really more eager for the moment that we were pronounced man and wife than any planning of a spectacle (which was frankly more of an annoyance than anything else - which I've never admitted to anyone at any time until now, here, on the ONT).

Oh, believe it or not, we were really excited to consummate our marriage, even though we were 52.
Of course, when the elevator broke down on the second day, it wasn't a little annoying, since we were on the 8th floor. It's cruel to make 52-year-olds on their honeymoon climb 8 flights of stairs, several times a day.

651 592 Q: What's black and white and red all over?
A: A newspaper.

That works better verbally since red/read is spelled differently, so it's a bit of a cheat in writing. But, the joke isn't at anyone's expense and many riddles aren't either.

Well, of course it's not funny. Unless you are 5, which is the kind of audience it's intended for. Some people enjoy riddles or other kind of word games. Assuming there isn't some kind of Nelson Muntz character standing there pointing and mocking if they don't get it, it's usually fun.

I disagree that it is at anyone's expense if all are enthusiastic participants. Most humor is, but not all.

657 So completely off track-I've been attending the Saturday services at the Eastern Orthodox Church (as I've mentioned) and the studies the priest has following them. I like him, but the role of the Orthodox priest is something I don't understand because there's more reverence for the role than in the typical Protestant clergy. There's a lot of kissing of his hand by the Deacon and by the people when he's holding the cross at the end of the service. That's because they kiss his hand because of the fact that it's the hand that helps serve communion. I think this is a very scary thing to have- that much potential power and he knows it, But last week someone said something during the study and he said "No", rather forcefully He's like 6'4 and he could be kind of intimidating, I suppose. The woman looked kind of stricken. This week another women said something else and she also looked stricken. when he took down that idea. It's really hard for me t The priest's wife even said, "I'm glad you're not my confessor" and laughed.. I wrote to him about the incident last week because the women he spoke to I am friendly with. She had a bad experience with last priest (he didn't do anything inappropriate; He was just kind of controlling. The preset considers me his friend and I am friendly with his wife too but I don't know how much I should say because I'm not his parishioner .but I am colleague in the ministry and I think he needs to "tone it down" a bit. I told him "The local church is not the military". He said he's impatient with little stuff when he's had to deal with giving soldiers last rites when they're dying, but he's not their commanding officer in the church even if the priest has a higher role. I just hate to sit next to women who are wincing and if i ever join his church going to confession is going to be agonizing. Either the men are not upset what he says (It was only one man he got kind of sharp with) or they don't say anything or he's not used to dealing with women that much because there are more men in the military. There are more women in the local church, however.

I have been church shopping lately here in Lexington. Second shift is making it hard as the one I really like does not offer a Saturday afternoon service.

I really do like the priest at this church though. The first Sunday I attended, he talked about that nightclub shooting in Turkey. He started out by saying "You have all heard the recent violence in Constantinople." I sat up straighter in my seat. Then he went on to talking about historical and spiritual roots of the early church, threw in St Augustine in a learned manner. This guy was good.

What I am trying to say in the context of your story is this: The priest/pastor, no matter if it is in a Catholic church, Orthodox or a protestant one, is the most important thing to that community. He guides the parish. If he is instead a dissonant voice, then it may be time to try to find a different one. A hundred years ago, you would be pretty much stuck with what you got, but with travel being so much faster and the plethora of options, you can afford to find the one that fits you best.

That's great you have a priest you respect and addresses important things.

It's a little different for me. I'm not stuck with him. I can continue being a pastor in my denomination, but I like so much about the Eastern Orthodox Church. It's just hard for me to disassociate myself from being a pastor and seeing how people respond. I already told him that I do not how to be parishioner that just sits there and doesn't say anything and comes back the next week because I think about things theologically.

He's a good priest. I think. He has worked really hard for much less money and got the church into an actual building, when he could have stayed in the military and risen even higher in the ranks. Ind I enjoy discussing theology with him but I'd be scared to go to confession with him which I'm not sure it should be that way . St John VIanney (the RC patron saint of parish priests) was strict but he was loving, i think. Id probably have a harder time with some Orthodox Priest who would shut me down and think I should be in the kitchen. This fellow had a women supervisor in the milittary at some point and does a lot of ecumenical stuff so he's used to women clergy and doesn't think Protestant are automatically the enemy.

Does confession in EO take place in a booth with the screen? Or does it do a sit down face to face? My parish when I was a kid did the sit down face to face with the priest and I hated it. There is a reason the screen is there, so you are more free in confessing your sins and asking for absolution and penance.

I'm not even sure I want to join simply because of the fact I then cease to be a colleague and become simply a woman in his congregation and then I can;'t argue with him. I haven't argued with him up to this point because it seems rude to do that in someone elses house-church. His wife does a bit in the studies, but I'm not his wife.

I have never actually been to an Orthodox service, so I have no idea about the culture and interaction with the parish.

However, I would go with a tried and true method: Take a shot of whiskey and just straight out ask him.

678 I agree about the screen for confession, Aetius. Also, I was under the impression that in the EO, women are in the kitchen - sometimes literally, when baking in prep for Easter etc.

I only know a little about this, Fen, since my grandparents were EO and I've attended a number of Masses there. The "externals" I'm familiar with, inasmuch as they differ from the RC that I was raised in. No three-dimensional statues, different way of receiving the Host, etc. As far as theological discussions are concerned, wouldn't that be a personal preference thing? Some priests might be more inclined towards that than others. Otherwise, their job is ministering to your soul, rather than your intellect, no?

Submission has always been difficult for me.

679 675. He could tell from the way i looked away that I was a jew with a bad conscience. He didn't say, 'you should be ashamed.' He said, 'this shames me.' That stopped me dead in my tracks - I'd forgotten that what seem like purely personal failings affect others. He reminded me.

680 I don't really want to have to go to Confession because I don't want to have to talk about my sins for the last fifty years. I'm a Protestant. I already confessed my sins to God and asked for pardon. I di it every day If it were just I was becoming Orthodox and then I get a clean slate it would be different, but it's weird anyway to confess your sins to someone who's your friend who's still the priest.

Isn't this your ego in play, Fen? Why would you argue with him? And in what way are you a colleague now? You're not in the same church at all, if I understand correctly. I certainly doubt that he views you as a colleague.

Please forgive me if I'm coming across as rude; I'm just confused by what you're asking. Also, since my background is RC, I simply don't take women seriously as key figures in churchly matters.

That's very interesting and well said and an important part of being part of community, Our actions affect others. The actions that affect others are true in the synagogue and in the church too which is why they have confession.

What you are having trouble with is one of the fundamental differences between the Catholic/Orthodox ways and Protestantism.

Confession, I also think, serves a psychological need as well. Therapists have taken over a lot of the use people had for this idea of confessing what you have done to a holy/learned person and asking them how you can make it right.

This is not a choice to be taken lightly, and there is no one who is rushing you to make a decision one way or another. You'll know the right choice to make for you. Take the time, pray, and maybe read some historical and theological texts for EO. It has been around for a while, so I am sure you can find some somewhere.

I understand it perfectly well, it's just that it feels "wrong" to me. FWIW, I cannot accept the notion of a human gatekeeper to Christ, which is why I'm an apostate according to the Church in which I was raised (all the way through to college, every Sunday, every Sacrament and catechism, from the pre-Vatican II times when Mass was in Latin). Nor can I embrace Protestantism, which has always felt like Luciferian rebellion to me.

So I am outside the churchly pale, and likely to remain so, at least for the remainder of this lifetime.
I'm a firm believer in reincarnation, and my husband confirmed this to me in a visit some months after his death. So as it turns out, my rejection of the temporal order as it stands is entirely correct.

It honestly depends on the congregation. If you are doing a cold conversion, you will be doing the grand slam: Baptism, First Communion, and Confirmation- all at once. Usually you would be taking classes (probably with a bunch of high school kids doing their confirmation) so in these classes, questions and discussion are usually encouraged.

name) in the church. It told my husband that he needs to call me
"Reverend"____ or Pastor ______ in the church which made him laugh. He

Mrs Hades' Uncle Mark is an ordained minister, his family calls him Father Mark or Uncle Father Mark (which is, admit it, just f'n creepy). I think it's a bit strange myself, so I just call him Padre Mark when I acknowledge his pastoral status at all (which is exceedingly rare, even though he was kind enough to perform a small blessing ceremony for me and Mrs Hades at her family church since, because we have both been divorced, we couldn't be married there).

Perhaps, since I am also ordained (and you can be too! Universal Life Church takes all comers!) I should refer to myself as "The Less Reverent" GGE.

Good morning roonz and roonettez! I had a fantastic weekend of fun and sun with Mrs Hades in Myrtle Beach, the only bad part about it was the fact it couldn't go on forever. I hope your weekend was good as well.
