The War on Free Speech: College Now Warning Students Not to Record Their Instructors During Their Embarrassing Political Tirades

They want to indoctrinate in secret, and will actually punish you for exposing their ideas to sunlight.

That's not a sign of a legitimate "intellectual" or moral movement.

Shortly after the election, Orange Coast Community College professor Olga Perez Stable Cox launched into a tirade during her class on human sexuality, calling Donald Trump a "white supremacist" and Mike Pence "one of the most anti-gay humans in this country."

While it's unlikely she was the only professor to make such statements, she did have the misfortune of being recorded by a student who was less than appreciative of her behavior.

OCCC claims they've launched an investigation. However, their target seems to be students, and not the professor.

They are posting signs warning students not to record instructors without permission....

The signs ominously state: "Video and/or audio recording without instructor permission is prohibited."

Meanwhile, college "bias response teams" have a strange tendency to only persecute conservative-tilting speech.

And yes, it's time to start seriously debating defunding the colleges that won't defend free speech.

The government should not be in the business of siphoning taxpayer money into political institutions. If these schools wish to act like private political clubs, that's fine, but they can do so on their own dime.

What avenues do we really have, apart from state-level initiatives? The two that seem worth pondering are congressional action and "dear colleague" letters.

Congressional action would take the form of a bill that would emphasize the importance of intellectual freedom at colleges and universities that receive public money. This would be a very hard bill to craft, especially in light of the skill with which the academic left typically inverts the purpose of legislation...

A "dear colleague" letter would emulate the form of Barack Obama’s action through the Office for Civil Rights and the Department of Justice, in which some thread of jurisdictional authority is traced to existing law to "advise" colleges and universities how that law would be interpreted. This was one of the ways Obama grabbed power for himself with direct congressional approval. Like many others, I didn't like it then and I don't like it now. But it may be the only short-term tool President Trump has to cut funding for colleges and universities that suppress free speech...

That’s the lay of the land. In the meantime, the "Resistance" to President Trump is likely to take us further and further into censorship, suppression of free inquiry, public disorder, and the hollowing out of faithful public purpose in higher education.

On the plus side, it will take us closer to National Divorce, which will benefit all parties.

I don't want revolution, I don't want "resistance," I don't want violence. I don't want to make others live under my heel (despite the fact they dearly wish to make me live under theirs).

I just want Done. I want Gone. I want Goodbye.

12 Since I don't know where rickl is, from the other thread....

298 rickl, Levin was griping about some proposed environmental council instead of a capitalism council, then hating cabinet picks for treasury and something else as crony capitalists, and slamming Ivanka and her husband as hard core leftists who had undue influence on policy. And he hates TIllerson because the environmental council was based on some initiative from ExxonMobil. And this was all in the course of about 90 seconds.

How about goading them into breaking multiple laws in a fashion that even the MSM can't ignore and prosecuting them to the fullest?

Could work twofold; in one way by curbing the universities excess in the short/medium term, and another in giving the Dem-Cong a reason to divorce unis from the DotGov teat.

33 This should be done at the state level. Public universities that receive state funding should be put on notice that this will not be tolerated. Nothing proves the agenda of the progressive left more than the intolerance shown on public campuses toward conservatism. Rs control 2/3rds of the states (Gov and or Legislature) and they should stop this tomorrow. Any campus that allows professors to use classroom time to espouse their political opinion should be given a letter of reprimand and a warning. Isn't is fascinating how the left convinced us that any public display of Christianity violated the Establishment Clause, but a professor paid by public tax dollars who uses his or her position to actively espouse what can best be described as a pagan religion is protect by free speech laws and tenure? Get the damn federal gov't out of education. Bring these fascists to heal by defunding them.

51 I'm with Lincoln on this one. We don't get done and gone and goodbye with each other. We're either one country or we're none at all. A splintered country is a failed ideal (not to mention a failed state).

The Democrats are becoming more overtly Marxist now. Is there anything about the word 'Marxist' that inspires dreams of peaceful coexistence, whether or not we're sharing the same borders? A seceded California, for example, would be an ongoing strategic blunder ripe for foreign exploitation.

At some point we'll probably have to fight them, and I don't mean on the floor of the Senate. This might even be inevitable. I hope not. Americans are never so good at war as when we're warring with each other.

54 OK - first off - where is the flaming golden scalp weasel skull for Session's confirmation?

Secondly - I agree with de-funding universities - but I did a post a while back on this - I think the way to do it is to take all Fed funding away from universities that spend over a certain amount on teachers, and classes, in non traditional subjects. Want to have a lot of puppeteer classes and Social Justice Warrior 101? great - you wil not get accredited as a real university by th Fed and wil get no Fed $$$ ( I say anything over 10 percent of the budget spent on teachers and classes that are not traditional (Math, science - real science - not climate science) will lose all Federal funding - the goal is to fund actual learning- not "Social Justice Warroirig."

I think this is the way to go.

I have a plan for the people who are conspiring to deprive us all of our constitutional rights of free speech and associatiation. Will cover that in a separate post - and I hope our new AG is listening when I do ( hint hint)

88 I think the way to do it is to take all Fed funding away from universities that spend over a certain amount on teachers, and classes, in non traditional subjects.

No court will allow defunding under a courses or studies qualification scheme. Smacks of too much of an ideological test, a test, btw, that could be turned around with a Dem administration to ensure all STEM is thoroughly infected by Leftist ideology.

Nearest weapon at hand:

Graduation rates -> post-grad employment and salary -> loan repayment rates.

Tie all of the federal funding to the colleges with the highest metrics in all. For dah children.

The Feds already dismantled several 'career' colleges for waste/fraud/abuse reasons.

Nearest weapon at hand.

89 The good news is that they're only speeding their demise. I was talking with my brother today -- he's taking college courses to get into cyber security since he has law enforcement experience -- and we had basically come to an independent joint conclusion. That is this: thanks to online education sites such as edX.org, the days of the traditional university are numbered.

I'm currently taking a college algebra course ASU's edX extension (and some science courses through extensions from other universities) that I struggled with in traditional classrooms. Now I'm flying through a semester's worth of difficult algebra in less than 3 months even though it's entirely self-paced, and I would only have to pay if I chose to have the class certified or I wanted college credits...and I would only have to pay that *after* I finish the course with a passing grade. (I might get it certified if I can get the money) And even then, it's still only a fraction of the cost of a traditional class where you have to pay up-front. ($100/credit is practically pennies compared to even our affordable community college)

What this essentially means is that students who can't afford college and/or need remedial courses have options other than going into ridiculous amounts of debt from artificially-inflated tuition and still take the courses from big-name universities all over the world. Students are only limited by their personal drive and discipline.

It's a beautiful free-market solution which will only end up helping students, and those universities who have extensions will be forced to dial back on the worthless SJW Studies courses when the cost exceeds what they would bring in. My brother and I concluded that we're seeing a massive shift in education where the academic-industrial complex is in its decline. Poor SJWs...they spent all that time taking over the universities, only for those universities to slowly become obsolete.

90 I should write a big essay about this, because no one -- on either side of the aisle -- seems to understand:

U.C. Berkeley is, in functional reality, two separate schools.

School #1, which we'll call the STEM half (STEM = science/technology/engineering/mathematics) is almost completely NOT POLITICAL and engages in completely valid and respectable world-class research and teaching.

School #2, which we'll call the SJW half (SJW = Social Justice Warriors) is all the "liberal arts" and other touchy-feely departments which are 100% totally taken over by modern-day communists and which are Bullshit Factories totally consumed by leftist politics and which corrode the national and global intellectual discourse with irrational hate-filled propaganda and brain-addled nonsense.

The problem? BOTH THESE SCHOOLS OCCUPY THE SAME CAMPUS and in fact SHARE THE SAME NAME.

Even worse, Cal's worldwide reputation rests almost entirely on the achievements of its STEM half, which is truly respectable and outstanding -- while the SJW half coasts on and parasitizes the gravitas earned by the STEM half.

But the SJW half gets most of the headlines and takes up most of the public's imagination.

But this is unfair to the STEM half (which, actually, is about 70% of the school, not just "half"), which DESERVES its grant dollars and which does good work. (About 5% of the STEM school is politicized, but we can live with that.)

When Trump said he would withhold federal funds from Cal due to the riot, he would be PUNISHING THE GOOD GUYS for the crimes of the commies.

If anything, the only thing to blame the STEM half fopr is that THEY LET THE SJWs SPEAK FOR THEM by endlessly hogging the spotlight.

On the ground, on campus, most STEM types (well over half of whom are Asian, btw) either hate the SJWs or (mostly) don't pay them the slightest attention. But the SJWs ruin the overall school's reputation, and the STEMs let them get away with it.

What needs to happen is the STEMs need to stand up and fight back and re-seize control of their own reputations.

There might be a state law. This is in California, and California has a law requiring the consent of both parties for things like recording phone conversations. It's possible that something like this would be covered as well.

That said, our society is structured in a Judeo-Christian tradition, meaning we will tolerate you without having to accept you, and concomitantly not accepting your wanting to overthrow our society as punishment for some perceived wrongdoing.

"Excuse me?" I said.
"Religion. You all must be mythologists!" At this point he was quite pleased with himself.
Loudly I said "And you are a community college professor. Let me guess, couldn't make it at Harvard?"
His smug grin disappeared immediately, and he turned and scurried - actually scurried, it was this short-stepped little walk-run - out to the parking lot.
At that point it was I who was quite pleased with myself.

I can't even begin to list the problems with this, but, I mean, it didn't work, let's start with that.

I don't think we have an alternative but to do the very hard and messy work of clawing back to a properly limited and representative system that can defend itself against constant attempts to co-opt it for various ends.

It's all in "Albion's Seed", several other books.

This is one big reason the US started out as a confederated alliance of states, under those Articles that don't get mentioned a lot. The Constitution centralised the Union as far as it physically could. And still here we are pondering secession.

I think it was purposeful.

If they're smart, they'll do the following, as I've been saying:

196 A few years ago a severe storm caused widespread power outages where I live that lasted for for several days. On the second or third day, a local grocery chain was giving away bags of ice, for free, and our neighborhood store was a distribution point. I happened to be at the shopping center when the truck arrived, and watched the free-shit recipients act like animals, carting off many more bags than they could possibly use. Because it was free. And they were getting something that was in short supply, for free. So they acted like animals.

The moral to my story? The next time you see a 'mostly peaceful' protest at a college campus on TV, imagine how the mob will behave if they haven't had a meal in a week.

These are the good old days.

209 I took a course where the professor made an audio recording of all his lectures and then posted them online. So, if you asked questions or engaged in the class discussion, you'd be on the recording. Of course, everyone knew it was happening, so no surprises. He thought it helped the students by letting us be more engaged in class instead of being so focused on note-taking. Plus, if you missed a class, you could always get the material later. It also encouraged everyone to be on their best behavior. Who wants to end up online acting like an idiot?

I know, today it's like it's something to strive for, but at the time, students wanted to be thought of as at least trying for intelligence.

258 Ok, you guys just don't get the whole shopping thing that women do....

We get it, we just don't do it.

I heard it explained once like this... it goes back to 100,000 years of natural selection picking the best sorts of hunter-gatherers.

Gatherer: go out, find apples. Don't pick the apples yet; you might find something better further into the forest. And you don't want to carry them around all day; that's a waste of energy. And they'll still be there tomorrow. So, walk for a half-day, remembering where the best gathering is, then turn around and gather on the way back to your camp. Women were gatherers. Thus, women "shop".

Hunter: go out, find a deer. Kill the deer. Go home and eat. Don't pass it up and assume there's a better deer further into the forest, or you might starve today. Men were hunters. Thus, men don't "shop", they just "buy".

Tender young Ivanka is goofy on global warming, and perhaps too idealistic about her buddy Chelsea. The hubbie has more influence, and it is troubling that his lawyer is the infamous Jamie Gorelick.

But the establishment behemoth that has to be slain has tentacles everywhere. There will have to be some kind of reaching across the aisle, especially since Dems might be more helpful on America First Trade than the Chamber of Commerce open borders brigade. Retaining the rust belt is important.

When I get too worried, I just think how Hilda would have been the end of US. But we're only in week three. An RBG or Kennedy retirement, Sessions pushing some buttons, lots of moving parts still getting into gear. But constant reminders/encouragement to Trump are still in order.

You mean he should go Jackson and tell the court to enforce its ruling.

Presumably, he doesn't want to seriously alienate Republicans in Congress, and that would do so big time. Plus, he might get his way through the courts, so might as well see how that works out first.

Even if he loses in the 9th, even if it goes to SCOTUS, and even if they tie (which would amount to a loss), if I'm not mistaken, he would still be able to ask for a rehearing at SCOTUS once Gorsuch is seated.

So, before going nuclear, he is better off going the traditional route.

330 "They are posting signs warning students not to record instructors without permission...."

No Problem. Permission Granted. Tell them Dirks Strewn sent you, and told them to suk it.

331 I contacted the University of Central Florida and asked them why they were sponsoring terrorist training on campus:
http://www.campusreform.org/?ID=8741

Getting no response, I have contacted Governor Scott, Representative Goodson, and Senator Hukill to ask them why the State is funding an organization that sponsors terrorist training.

I know better than to contact Orange County Sheriff Jerry Demings because I understand just how corrupt he is.

I wonder how long it would have taken UCF to act if the terrorist training was done by a conservative organization?

332 They (the left) are mostly beyond hope. They are severely mentally ill. The best way to 'cure' them is simply to enforce the laws currently on the books. If there are never any consequences to illegal behavior, why stop? Once a few (high profile) offenders actually get arrested and prosecuted for breaking current law, the rest will begin to realize this is not the path to 'winning'. If that fails, then there is no choice but extermination. Our Country was founred/designed beautifully. The US Constitution need only be enforced/followed as written. Similar to the Ten Commandments. "Hey, if you adhere to these 10 basic guidelines, your society will more than likely turn out OK". The detractors need only be proven wrong.

334 Judge Gorsuch pretty much had to say that. Lawyers and Judges can be disciplined for over the line public criticisms of courts and judges. Many moons ago I received a letter from the State Bar admonishing me because I was quoted in a newspaper as saying "our less than brilliant court of appeals." I sure as Hell did.

Thanks for the virtue-signalling, assholes.

No more of my money for you.

339 I'm going to see Adam Carolla and Dennis Prager next week at CSUN, and I've been thinking about how much protesting I might encounter on the way in to the show. As far as I know, the last gig they tried to do at CSUN got shut down by the administration due to opposition and "not enough security" (which was just code for "we don't want you here").

Even a tiny college like CSUN is so staunchly indoctrinated by the left that I don't know how we're going to replace the retiring conservatives like Thomas Sowell and eventually Dennis Prager. Hell, Judith Curry, a serious voice in stopping the money drain that Climate Change really is, had to throw in the towel due to the academic environment as it is. Are the Milo Yiannopoulus' and Ben Shapiro's going to carry that torch?

343 Lemme get this straight:

If Professor Warren goes on a tirade, you must not broadcast it.

If Senator Warren goes on a tirade, you must.

She's got a lot of rules for a rule-breaker.

344 I live in California. The part that still has farms and stuff. I don't think the coastal folks have any idea how many Americans would be happy to see them go. And how quickly the Mexicans would take over.
