DeVos Confirmed as Secretary of Education After Pence Breaks 50-50 Deadlock; GOP Breaks Filibuster on Sessions, Will Confirm Him Tomorrow

The Democrats attempted a fillibuster on Sessions but the GOP shut that shit down.

Republicans broke Democrats' attempted filibuster Tuesday and put Sen. Jeff Sessions on a glide path to becoming the next attorney general, with a final vote slated for Wednesday.

Among all of President Trump’s Cabinet picks, Mr. Sessions has been the chief target of civil rights groups, saying he represented a retreat on their issues, particularly compared to the Obama administration.

But they were unable to sway any Republicans and even lost a Democrat in the 52-47 vote.

The defecting Democrat was Joe Manchin of West Virginia.

I'm still hoping that some Democratic primary opponents will get the chance to do the, "This person voted for a racist and against bettering the education of your child" attack.

We have until tomorrow to see if that's possible.

Fingers crossed for comity in the Senate from Democrats!

521 IIRC, Maine's 2nd congressional district provide Trump's only electoral college vote from New England. And LePage is Maine's GOP governor.

So going after Bath IW in order to punish Collins, I think, would be bad politics.
Posted by: mrp at February 07, 2017 01:25 PM (JBggj)

Interesting take in terms of the collateral damage. Focusing just on the senate one concludes that if the national party went anti-Collins, they'd lose nothing because she is so consistently against them.

Still, as others have pointed out, there are strong rural bases in both states. To the extent that they are culturally excluded from the current political vision of the dems, I'd put these two on blast. Force them to go dem or third party, lose alignment with the party a substantial proportion of their states prefers. Handing the democrats either seat if it does not work is really more a symbolic loss, as practically speaking those seats are not functional.

The Commiecrats had to bus in the lefties from outside McClintock's district for that one. Looking at them they were from the neighboring Demunist district of Midtown Sacramento.

None of that group that mobbed McClintock's Town Hall meeting came from anywhere in suburban Roseville where it was held, or any of the rural towns all the way to the NV border, which is the territory of McClintock's district.

Town halls aren't the only way to connect with your constituents. It IS a showy way, though.

The teachers unions are the ones losing their shit, so what you have is all the teachers telling mommy and daddy how horrible she is, which naturally gets them all riled up.

I think it boils down to schools being terrified of losing their funding.

Honestly, I think that's understandable; there isn't a lot of money to go around.

But Lefties are starting to reap what they sowed, as far as the crappy teaching methods they keep pushing, illegal immigration (hard to keep your class up to standard when 2/3s of them don't speak English) and actively encouraging the breakdown of the two parent family.

Oh, there's a ton of money to go around - weren't public schools the biggest recipient of Obama's stimulus package?
Also, Bush's NCLB increased federal funding of schools by something like 40%?

The question then is: where is the money going that should be redirected to pubic schools' core mission?

It was a classic system of two unknowns algebra problem, but they were not taught the algebra to solve it. He taught his children the algebra to solve it, but a teacher posted in the comments that this was a 'number sense' question not unlike how kids figure out baseball stats. My point was- you have to have a certain framework in order to solve a problem like that. Common core seems to be more interested in solving the problem- without establishing ANY framework.

What was hilarious was that the Bee (Ess) tried to

254 Healthcare reform was the old bait and switch. The main or only reason
presented for this national plan was to get insurance / healthcare to
those involuntarily uninsured. So for these alleged 45 million people
they screwed it up worse for the other 260 million.

It should have been a two prong reform effort that could have been passed separately and still needs to be done that way.

255 I actually want DeVos to cut federal funding for education from states and let them sort it out. Its really pathetic that states like California prefer to spend tax payers money on illegals and expect federal money collected from everyone else to pay for failing education in their state. And the teachers have no accountability even in the better school districts. I have a kid in the public school system here in California and its considered one of the better districts for special education and its still a hot mess of inefficiency. I spend a fortune on after school tutoring for her just so she doesn't keep falling further behind. Its ridiculous.

260 The teacher's unions and Democrat politicians have had a symbiotic relationship for decades with the kids being the pawns.

Democrats give the unions and schools tons of money some of which the unions funnel back to the Dem politicians in the form of campaign funds and of course votes and they also do the Dems bidding by indoctrinating kids in liberal policies from the time they are old enough to go to school thereby creating the next generation of "activists", voters and liberal politicians.

This has been an incredibly cozy and dangerous relationship. They don't give a crap about kids save for how they can mold and use them.

Someone who is committed to charter schools and draining that particular swamp is a mortal threat. This is a great day for kids, for free thought and liberty.

She posted something called "they really want to go to war with Iran" and then was going back and forth in a circle jerk with this other guy about how the American people are "easily convinced" to go into wars and "want to believe" and stuff. I said that I had literally never heard another Trump supporter talking about wanting war with Iran; it was all coming from liberals / NeverTrumpers, and I thought it was insulting to categorize Americans as war mongering or easily duped. And she claimed that I was twisting her words and she NEVER said that they wanted war ... when it was the title of her post. Like, right there at the top. Sigh.

Also, Bush's NCLB increased federal funding of schools by something like 40%?

The question then is: where is the money going that should be redirected to pubic schools' core mission?

Posted by: Lizzy at February 07, 2017 01:58 PM (NOIQH)

Only schools in Democrat strongholds in the inner cities. And the money was dedicated to hiring more minority teachers which will make it hard on the schools when that money dried up.

272 "I was hoping for a tweet by Trump saying 'In order to avoid your distress over Secretary DeVos's confirmation, we decided to just shut down and disband the DoE tomorrow'."

In key respects, Trump is going the wrong way on education policy. That silly black chick who was on teevee with him, Ermagerd or whatever her name is, has gotten in his ear about the terrible troubles that the historically black colleges and universities are having.

The HBCUs are in trouble because they're trouble. They have zero academic rigor. Their graduates are unemployable. They're sewer pits of indignant identity politics. They should be left to vanish as relics of no further relevance.

Instead, Trump is apparently preparing EOs which will direct Betsy DeVos to rescue the HBCUs with moar federal funding. (They're already sinkholes for Fedzilla's cash, so, hey, let's throw good money after bad.)

This _noblesse oblige_ attitude towards the black community was previously tried by George W. Bush. It blew up in his face. All of his expensive gestures and costly outreach didn't bring a single black voter over to the GOP.

280 The DeVos center was where Trump held his last campaign rally prior to the election. He told his staff, while they were at a rally in Maine, that since Hillary had gone to Michigan on Monday afternoon, he wanted to go back there also and make it happen.

The DeVos Center in Grand Rapids said ok, and it was arranged within two or three hours. I remember watching online as 10,000 people showed up to that rally at 10pm and waited until Pence and Trump got there at midnight. Watching him walk out and talk to everyone , looking fresh and well dressed and ready to go, I thought then that he really had a chance to win it.

The Devos' involvement in education is quite deep and I have to laugh at these idiots who are crying that Betsy has no experience with public education, the sky is falling etc.

For heaven's sake the family has created business schools at the university level Northwood University is a highly acclaimed not for profit University that is home to the DeVos Business school and the University of Central Florida is home to the Devos School of Sports Management.
I believe the DeVos' also created a private flight school somewhere around the Grand Rapids area.

Northwood's website includes the fact that they are one of the top schools in the country for return on a student's investment.

True. However, these programs have to be scaled back at some point.

Mentioned it before, but a progressive friend who used to teach kindergarten in poor neighborhood of Denver said this about her school's free breakfast: half the kids showed up to school hungry and in pjs; however, parents couldn't bother to get them to school early for pre-class free breakfast. She started saving food for them, but eventually came to realize that they didn't value free food, or even her effort to accommodate their unwillingness to even *just show up* to receive it. Seriously, how far does the state have to go to accommodate/care for people who make little/no effort to behave like responsible adults???

That's very true, but the system has also been set up to fail, as I mentioned in my original comment.

Many of my friends are teachers in an average area of SoCal; not wealthy, but not poor. (Lakewood/East Long Beach, if you're familiar with the area)

Things started going down hill when they started busing the kids in from the ghettos of West Long Beach. (Break down of traditional families plays a big part in the extreme behaviour of the black kids)

With that also came an influx of non-English speaking kids ( thank you amnesty crowd).

Traditional teaching methods and subjects are being tossed out, and replaced iwth crap meant to (imho) dumb the kids down, and make then hate America.

So yes, fucking failure. But it's been planned for decades, I think, and the average teacher is not solely to blame.

The Vichy GOP turds are not going to do shit about BarkyCare. They are assholes. Traitors. Swine. Dirtbags. Not that anyone didn't know this for a long time, already.

Trump has done a lot of good things already but he is really disappointing me on the major issues he ran on. He's not doing shit on BarkyCare. He hasn't done squat on illegals - not even stopping Barky's totally illegal and anti-American (anti-civilization) DREAMER crap and seems to have long forgotten that Shrillary is a criminal.

As to the GOP turds, they are doing what they were expected to do - be the turds they are. They were always screaming about how they passed repeals of BarkyCare 53 times through Congress, or wahtever it was, and now they are whining about the poor, widdle welfare leeches losing their precious health insurance, that my health insurance went up over 200% to friggin pay for. For those unfamiliar with Glenn Seaborg, the guy was the real deal. A bona fide genius of physical and analytical chemistry.

Note that the above quote came during the fabled "Reagan Revolution". What was done to significantly change the system in response to this warning? Answer: BUPKIS.

A lot of Republican pols don't want it realized or discussed that they're also quietly sending their own kids to private schools, as the kids of their voting constituents molder away in failing public schools.

414 Trump has done a lot of good things already but he is really disappointing me on the major issues he ran on. He's not doing shit on BarkyCare. He hasn't done squat on illegals - not even stopping Barky's totally illegal and anti-American (anti-civilization) DREAMER crap and seems to have long forgotten that Shrillary is a criminal.

He needs Sessions in first. So Sessions can crank up RICO investigations.

415 @83
Interesting take in terms of the collateral damage. Focusing just on the senate one concludes that if the national party went anti-Collins, they'd lose nothing because she is so consistently against them.
-------------------

Not entirely true.

She provides a vote for Majority Leader. And the fact that McConnell has the job instead of Schumer meant that the Dems weren't able to use the committees to tie up Trump's cabinet picks. So there are some advantages to having her around. For instance,
Hatch got one nominee through by changing the committee rules when the Dems ran away. If Hatch hadn't been the committee chair, then the Dems likely would have just left the nominee in limbo.

Doesn't mean that she shouldn't be primaried if the Republicans ever decide they can get a more conservative senator elected in her place. But until then, best to leave her alone.

Murkowski, on the other hand, would be a safe target for a primary attempt, assuming someone with the necessary popularity could be found.

419 the average teacher is not solely to blame

Yep. Both sides know that the biggest problem with education is at home.

The progs think that if you have a bad public school, and you make it possible for people to choose an alternative, then all the kids with good parents will flee. (Which is true.) And then the public school will be even worse, because only the kids with bad/AWOL parents will be left. (Also true.)

It sucks. It's a much bigger problem than the schools and teachers.

The community college itself cannot 'waive' tuition. That is against state law.

If you can demonstrate indigence, you can get a Board of Governors waiver of tuition. Over HALF the students qualify so they already do get 'free' tuition.

You can possibly get a tuition grant given by the college's Foundation if there is one.

You can win a scholarship, but that takes extra effort and means you have to actually do something.

You can pay tuition with cash. How you get the cash is up to you.

Books are up to you and there are some possibilities to get rentals/loans to acquire them.

Bus passes to college are free if you demonstrate indigence.

Food stamps are available if you demonstrate indigence.

You cannot get a community college sports scholarship. They are illegal...to qualify for one you would be proving life is unfair to those who are too sick, lame or lazy to qualify for one and that is not what is taught at these places...everybody is denied the opportunity to get a sports scholarship because of hurt feelz. Life must be fair. Nobody gets one of those. So they cheat.

I agree with everything you say, GnuBreed, although I do think funding is an issue.

Now, maybe the money they have is misused, I wouldn't be surprised at that! But at most of the schools I am familiar with because of my friends or families kids, the parents regularly chip in for classroom supplies.

Again, maybe that particular money is used for things that it shouldn't be used for.

428 The only thing I have a problem with is special ed kids. Love them, but they shouldn't have the right to force the public school systems to accommodate their individual challenges, shall we say. My niece was deaf, my sister certainly didn't insist that the public school hire a teacher that could communicate with her to the detriment of all the other children in class. No, she went to a deaf school and onto Gauladett University in DC and got a masters in education and is now teaching deaf kids in California. I understand the need for a child to feel included in a regular setting, but that isn't always possible and shouldn't add costs to the schools.

It's all based on the rules. Harry Reid changed the rules on confirming lower court judges and cabinet nominees, mostly because he could. The Dems now probably have a picture of Harry up where they can throw darts at it. Rules changes only require 51 votes so the GOP can, when the time comes, change the rules to break a filibuster on SCOTUS nominees. Elections have consequences.

Obama proposes a national Cap & Trade system. The US Chamber of Commerce says that will damage US business and would testify to that fact in front of Congress. They did so and convinced many that Cap and Trade was a bad idea. Not the Dems, though, they claimed USCoC was in the pocket of foreign governments because they lobbied in other countries on behalf of American business. USCoC said that was baloney, then San Fran Nan doubled down and said that other countries donated money to the USCoC to undermine the USA. Rove got on FNC and said he was going to show the world exactly how much evidence Granny Botox had of that. He had a little white board with NADA written on it. That was the first time he did that, i saw it, it was correct and brilliant, and that's why FNC keeps him and the white board on. True, Rove and his white board have been wrong, but they are batting at least .500 and that's OK with me.
