Of the bigger schools, I know BYU is conservative. They have a good reputation for turning out students. I would imagine many of the southern schools like LSU are at least somewhat right leaning; not full bore commie like Berkeley.

For, without Harry Reid invoking his Reid Rule, Betsy DeVos would never have had a chance to become Secretary of Education and push the federal bureaucracy towards accepting charter schools.
It's going to be like the ACA. Once whatever voucher/school choice program is in place and you have hundreds of thousands, if not millions of kids benefiting from it, it'll become politically difficult, at the very least, to just uproot it quickly.
May the teacher's unions learn that they should never have become political in the first place as they then face a federal level Act 10 type legislation that will wipe them off the face of relevancy in American politics.
And may the Democrats that took campaign cash over the education of poor black children never regain office or power again.

Collins and her ilk are frustrating as hell, but they make the difference when it comes to being the majority party since that is where the power in the House and Senate come from. Being in the majority means that you decide the schedule, you decide which bills go to which committees, which bills get brought up in the committees and which ones make the floor for votes.

Reforming education and getting or kids out of these propaganda camps would do our nation FAR more good than much of what we spend other resources on.
School vouchers could actually pull in a lot of minority voters as well.

The smoke has cleared and Betsy Devos is now Education Secretary Devos so I would have to say them. Time will tell if the teachers' union fall for it and keep giving Collins and Murkowski $ and endorsements. They are not very happy today which is the thing I like.

If only it were that simple. Gov. Bentley is currently being investigated for possible impeachment on a number of grounds, including some fishiness regarding an "aide" he may or may not have been having an affair with and may or may not have been getting compensated illegally out of campaign funds, not to mention business regarding firing of the head law enforcement person in the cabinet. Add to this that the AG over the investigation supposedly interviewed for the Senate spot and speculation in some quarters he may try to weasel out of this by appointing himself, toss in a very much less than conservative record, and it's turning into a train wreck.
None of which anyone would care about, but...close Senate.
And now you know why I didn't really like having my good Senator put in as AG. Getting a decent pol in this state requires an act of God.

Exactly. Now look at what that Washington Judge did. He seized Presidential power over immigration policy; outside the law, outside the constitution. He just claimed the power to set national immigration policy. He first declared that Trump's Executive Order was something different that what it actually was. He declared it a ban on religion when it was a ban on immigration from 7 countries of origin. Nothing religious about it. Once the judge had redefined the executive order, he then declared it unconstitutional, and immoral. By redefining the constitution and morality. That judge did not have the authority to do what he did, yet he did it.
Now we wait to see if other judges will back him up, and we wait to see if one, think about that, one progressive judge on the supreme court will defy party politics and vote to overturn. Otherwise, split along party lines, the Judge's coup d'eta succeeds, and the United States is finished.
If the progressives pull this off, they can say and do 'anything' because 49% of the population don't know how to stop this power grab. Sanctuary cities prove the point when a mayor or governor can publicly declare that he will not enforce federal law, and doesn't get arrested.
That is why the progressives have declared Trump to be Hitler reincarnate, and Trump supporters to be Nazis. White Christian Conservatives are now defined, by the progressives, as extreme right wing, and white nationalists, white supremacists, and our national policies are declared illegal.
If the democrats get away with this, we are well and truly FUBAR.

Yeah, I am not sure which way to go on that one. Scott Adams has been the only one I have agreed with the past few years or who has actually written something that has made me think.
Isn't that what we look for in 'intellectual leaders'? Someone who makes us actually think? Beck or Kristol or Will were never really what I would call thought provoking as much as they might have offered intellectual reinforcement. Did any of them ever rise to a Sowell or Friedman or Steyn, even?

Tis true, we do spend more on military than the rest of the world combined. And in return, we (at least used to) dominate the world and have the Pax Americana, a good thing.
Now, we spend far more money on education, the leftist "specialty", than the rest of the world. And do we have the best educational system? Not hardly.
Why not just use our military to conquer Japan again and import their educational system and have them run our schools? Probably be cheaper all the way around for better results.
Heck, just toss 60 billion at them and we'd save the invasion costs.

Maine is very split between the rural and the *very rural* parts. Portland and Southern Maine might as well be Massachusetts it's so liberal and batshit crazy.
The northern reaches are reliably Republican but the numbers just don't add up for us. There are around 1.2m people in Maine, half of them live in and around Portland.
Collins however is about as useful as a football bat. You never hear about her in the news except when she crows about bringing pork home or she bucks the party line such as this case.
She's a reliable squish. Not someone I'd want next to me in a shield wall.

The NEA donated to both of these candidates. I read somewhere that Collins had received $25000 from the NEA and Murkowski had only received $2500, however, Murkowski didn't need that big of a war chest , so it stands to reason they didn't need to donate bigly to her.
Both felt obligated to pay those donations back, which is why we have Senators who vote against their constituents. Donors come first to most of them.

And one of the more disgusting parts of Robart's ruling is that he could have easily stayed the provisions of the EO only in his district instead of making it a nationwide ruling. The only reason these feral judges feel free to make any sort of insane decisions they like is because the Congress never exercises its control over the judiciary and does its part to defend the Constitution.

Robart was never a conservative. He was pushed on Bush as part of a deal by Washington state's loony leftist senator, Patty Murray. The senate's rules allow the senators of the state where the federal judges will be serving to have a say in who gets nominated. Murray and the other Washington senator, both rabid lefty loons, would only approve like-minded leftists for their state's nominees. The big deal for Collins is the flow of naval shipbuilding contracts going to Bath Iron Works.
BIW is the fourth largest private employer in her state, and unlike the others, which are hospital systems and whatnot, the only one whose fortunes and employment levels regularly fluctuate up and down based on federal budget decisions.
Trump is talking about a major new shipbuilding program. He needs to jerk Weird Susan's leash *hard* on that and make it clear BIW ain't getting more work if she doesn't toe the line.
European naval shipbuilders produce some pretty nice kit, and if you buy it under license, they'll ship you knockdown versions to be assembled in your own country. So small yards in the USA which would not previously have been able to compete with Bath for building, say, frigates, could easily do so.

The Senate has ALWAYS moved glacially, and so does representative government as a whole. Just think back to the days when real filibusters were a thing, like what Paul and Cruz did a few years ago.
That was much more common. Also, debates were real debates where people would give speeches that were literally hours long, in succession, on a specific topic.
I think it actually moves a fair bit faster now.

Doesn't matter if it's true or not, this story is almost certainly designed to show that Obama's middle east war, was a just war. I actually had a state representatives aide, tell me to my face, that my organization I was representing who was lobbying for the rep to vote for a law we wanted enacted didn't give said rep. enough money as did opposing organization and he would have to vote with them.
Although I was still young at the time, I was no longer innocent after that discussion. I was stunned at what they said to me.
The movie, Legally Blond, Red White and Blond is actually right on with it's characterization of the Congresswoman, Victoria Rudd played by Sally Field. Who says she can't vote for what's right because her biggest donor will pull his support.

Yes, there really is no excuse for not removing somebody like Robart from the bench. He has clearly demonstrated here that he is unfit to serve as a judge.
Either Robart was too stupid and incompetent to understand that he issued an overbroad ruling that was flatly contradicted by relevant federal laws, OR Robart knew that he was issuing an overbroad ruling that was flatly contradicted by relevant federal laws, and decided to do it anyway, because he wanted to use his position as a federal judge to make a political statement against Donald Trump.
IOW, Robart is either grossly incompetent in his understanding and application of the law, or he is so corrupt that he would grossly misuse his office in order to perform a political stunt. Either way, he is unfit to serve as a federal judge, and should be removed from the bench.

The NEA donated to both of these candidates. I read somewhere that Collins had received $25000 from the NEA and Murkowski had only received $2500, however, Murkowski didn't need that big of a war chest , so it stands to reason they didn't need to donate bigly to her.
Both felt obligated to pay those donations back, which is why we have Senators who vote against their constituents. Donors come first to most of them.

The classic concept of operations was that we had better keep our own ability to build military gear so that we could scale up rapidly in the event of a major war.
That was a sensible idea, but just not workable any longer.
Globalization and trade treaties have eaten the parts of the civilian Stateside industrial base that are required to feed the protected milspec industrial base. We couldn't scale stuff like shipbuilding in a crisis even if we wanted to.
That could be fixed but it isn't getting fixed on any time scale shorter than twenty years. With a lot of cost and pain associated.

1) He tried to humiliate, marginalize, and defund the military. In addition to adding a whole bunch of various programs that only serve to draw leftwing recruits and demoralize conservative ones.

There is reason to go after both Collins and Murkowski but this vote isn't the reason. What happened is what has been happening in Congress since there was a Congress.
On almost every vote where there might be controversy, leadership (in this case the dreaded Mitch McConnell and his team) count the votes needed and then see how many votes they can lose from their side and politicians who think they need cover are "allowed to vote their conscience". In this case, it was obvious for weeks that the Dems were going to go after DeVos because she is huge threat both to their allies in the teacher's unions and the Dems ability to indoctrinate kids as they have been doing for decades so they could only lose 2 votes.
For whatever reasons, Collins and the Snow Queen felt they needed to posture for their constituents and were allowed to vote against the nomination and everyone in DC on both sides of the aisle has known this all along. The nomination was never in real danger.
This was all kabuki.

One can never rule out the possibility that some liberal loons on the 9th Circuit will issue an obviously incorrect and politically-motivated ruling (it has happened too many times already to ever rule it out completely), but it seems unlikely in this case. The law is clear that Trump had the power to issue the EO. The law is also clear that the state of Washington had no standing to challenge the EO. Keep in mind that the state of Arizona is in the 9th Circuit. If the judges try to re-write the law so that states now have standing to challenge the feds on specific immigration policies, that will create a whole new set of problems. I doubt the 9th wants to go there.
