I Love Western Civ

I saw him in the riot, screamin' rage against the machine
I knew his IQ was prolly 'bout seventeen
His stoopid was going strong
Logic wasn't his favorite song
And I could tell it wouldn't be long
Till he was all yeah me, "Yeah me!"
And I could tell it wouldn't be long
Till he was all yeah me, "Yeah me!"
So I'm saying...
I love Western Civ
So crack those books and read some classics, baby
I love Western Civ
Those dead white men'll tell you how it is.

His smile went away when I told him he sounded so lame
Told him I've heard those words before, but it's all the same
You won't like it when it's gone
So don't ask me to play along
But he was still "yeah me! Yeah me!"
So I'd thought I'd best be moving along
As he was singin' that same old song
So I'm saying...
I love Western Civ
So open those books and read the classics, baby
I love Western Civ
Those dead white men know how it is.

I read it as throwing their victim-status categories back in their faces.

I don't think he really cares about those attributes, but this is in line with how Milo himself laughs off charges that he's an white nationalist/Nazi. It's absurd on its face based on those characteristics, even if you will not listen to a more reasoned explanation of how wrong those charges are.

Posted by: Always with a question at February 07, 2017 12:25 PM (d76uN)

115 I put it this way to a liberal friend this morning. In November we engaged in the most sacred of democratic traditions, electing a president. I can think of nothing more beneficial, more material to a republican democracy then engaging in the electoral process. The free exercise of choice expressed by the simple, everyday man or woman. A way to choose your own destiny and gain a modicum of control over it. What's happened since then, what's been employed as a response is the furthest thing from democracy or individual liberty. War has been declared on those who fairly and freely won. Their supporters in Congress are leading the fight for despotism and anarchy. They want to take away that choice because they lost the election. They want to encourage beatings, dismiss freedom of speech, stop the legislative process and corrupt the judiciary.

I can think of few things less democratic, right or free. I can also think of few things that will enrage the majority who voted and won this free election more.

120 There are, believe it or not, conservative universities. Many smaller state schools are. I know my dad works at a two year school where the theater department is actually conservative. Even the English department leans right, I think.

Of the bigger schools, I know BYU is conservative. They have a good reputation for turning out students. I would imagine many of the southern schools like LSU are at least somewhat right leaning; not full bore commie like Berkeley.

Posted by: Vanceone at February 07, 2017 12:26 PM (KbgjX)

121 May Pence cast that tie breaker and may Democrats hang Harry Reid in effigy.

For, without Harry Reid invoking his Reid Rule, Betsy DeVos would never have had a chance to become Secretary of Education and push the federal bureaucracy towards accepting charter schools.

It's going to be like the ACA. Once whatever voucher/school choice program is in place and you have hundreds of thousands, if not millions of kids benefiting from it, it'll become politically difficult, at the very least, to just uproot it quickly.

May the teacher's unions learn that they should never have become political in the first place as they then face a federal level Act 10 type legislation that will wipe them off the face of relevancy in American politics.

And may the Democrats that took campaign cash over the education of poor black children never regain office or power again.

An Alinsky tactic --- make them live up to their own rules.

Besides, it WORKS. That's why they get so hysterical about conservative blacks, for example.

It's of no importance to you or me. It's of no importance to the Left either. But to the mushy middle it is hugely important. When they see a "gay Jewish immigrant with a black boyfriend" called a Nazi, it matters. It starts to sink in that the Left is all about ...the Left.

I really think that leadership and Democratic donors laid the line on this one.

DeVos represents a potential next step in weakening union power in the United States. Doing that makes a large arm of donors to the Democratic Party weaker.

Posted by: Very Irredeemably Undude at February 07, 2017 12:26 PM (2X7pN)

Because if she was a Democrat, she would be the most conservative Democrat.

Collins and her ilk are frustrating as hell, but they make the difference when it comes to being the majority party since that is where the power in the House and Senate come from. Being in the majority means that you decide the schedule, you decide which bills go to which committees, which bills get brought up in the committees and which ones make the floor for votes.

I'd go so far as to say I would be willing to have my taxes increased for a real federal school voucher program.

I never knew failure theatre could be so enjoyable.

If there had been only 51 Republicans, Collins and Murkowski would have had to flip a coin to see who would get to vote with the teachers Association. If there had been 53 there would have been three defections, but only if the third was another woman so the Dems couldn't use the misogyny card later.

I'm enjoying the fact that the republicans (Murkowski and Collins) are now using failure theatre on the Dems base. Oooooh so close to stopping Sec. Devos. Keep that union money flowing, maybe next time.

300 Kinda sorta OT but not really:

Okay, so I was reading that Lena Dunham lost weight and blamed her weight loss on Trump becuz now she can't eat or some such nonsense.

But here's the thing (I believe):

Trump actually freed Lena Dunham from the trap of her own craptastic ideology.

She spent 4 or 5 seasons of "Girls" exhibiting her Weebles-quality body,

to almost universal derision, except for"body image fymynysts" who thin no matter how gross you allow yourself to become that you are still beautiful, grrrrrl!

Dunham's probably wanted to lose weight and become somewhat attractive for a long time but of course she can't do that without destroying her brand.

What to do? What to do?

Then Trump comes along and BAM!

With all the adult baby theatrics, Lena Dunham can now lose weight and improve her looks becuz she's too traumatized to eat.

TRUMP! - is there nothing he can't do?

And yes! This falls under so much winning!

If only it were that simple. Gov. Bentley is currently being investigated for possible impeachment on a number of grounds, including some fishiness regarding an "aide" he may or may not have been having an affair with and may or may not have been getting compensated illegally out of campaign funds, not to mention business regarding firing of the head law enforcement person in the cabinet. Add to this that the AG over the investigation supposedly interviewed for the Senate spot and speculation in some quarters he may try to weasel out of this by appointing himself, toss in a very much less than conservative record, and it's turning into a train wreck.

None of which anyone would care about, but...close Senate.

And now you know why I didn't really like having my good Senator put in as AG. Getting a decent pol in this state requires an act of God.

348 George Orwell was brilliantly correct when he pointed out that control of the language means control of the political process.

Exactly. Now look at what that Washington Judge did. He seized Presidential power over immigration policy; outside the law, outside the constitution. He just claimed the power to set national immigration policy. He first declared that Trump's Executive Order was something different that what it actually was. He declared it a ban on religion when it was a ban on immigration from 7 countries of origin. Nothing religious about it. Once the judge had redefined the executive order, he then declared it unconstitutional, and immoral. By redefining the constitution and morality. That judge did not have the authority to do what he did, yet he did it.

Now we wait to see if other judges will back him up, and we wait to see if one, think about that, one progressive judge on the supreme court will defy party politics and vote to overturn. Otherwise, split along party lines, the Judge's coup d'eta succeeds, and the United States is finished.

If the progressives pull this off, they can say and do 'anything' because 49% of the population don't know how to stop this power grab. Sanctuary cities prove the point when a mayor or governor can publicly declare that he will not enforce federal law, and doesn't get arrested.

That is why the progressives have declared Trump to be Hitler reincarnate, and Trump supporters to be Nazis. White Christian Conservatives are now defined, by the progressives, as extreme right wing, and white nationalists, white supremacists, and our national policies are declared illegal.

If the democrats get away with this, we are well and truly FUBAR.

Isn't that what we look for in 'intellectual leaders'? Someone who makes us actually think? Beck or Kristol or Will were never really what I would call thought provoking as much as they might have offered intellectual reinforcement. Did any of them ever rise to a Sowell or Friedman or Steyn, even?

When the Senate vote did deliver
Bad news on my doorstep

I can't remember if I cried
When Pence broke the vote that tied
But something touched me deep inside
The day ... the NEA ... died ...

So we were singing Bye Bye, sweet teaching gig of mine

We'll be down at the bar doing a shot or five
Singin' this was the day our Union died

That those jobs Are jobs americans will do but not for minimum wage.
we are not afforded all the freebies , we do not live 10 to a home in normal circumstances,. We do expect rightly or wrongly that we strove to live in a small house or whatever raising our 1.5 kids, as a normal existence.

they are undermining the middle class while scooping up the funds, That's fine if that's what they want But lets not make it easy for them to TELL the rest of us the WHY of illegal immigration. It's not about anything other than paying less to make more for themselves.

this is probably not even a very conservative thing to say, but i'm not FOR corps anymore, I recognize They are truly for their bottom dollar at the expense of America , freedom and upward mobility for all of us. I'm for us th p eople not being shit on.

379 Something to ponder: Liberals scream all the time about the US military spending, claiming we could conquer the world ten times over or something.

Tis true, we do spend more on military than the rest of the world combined. And in return, we (at least used to) dominate the world and have the Pax Americana, a good thing.

Now, we spend far more money on education, the leftist "specialty", than the rest of the world. And do we have the best educational system? Not hardly.

Why not just use our military to conquer Japan again and import their educational system and have them run our schools? Probably be cheaper all the way around for better results.

Heck, just toss 60 billion at them and we'd save the invasion costs.

382 So the idiot judge in Seattle who issued the TRO on Trump's immigration order made a big point of saying that no refugee from any of the countries on the ban list has ever been arrested in the U.S.

The Washington Examiner reports that not only have dozens of "refugees" from the banned countries been arrested in recent years in the U.S. for terror-related activities, but at least 60 of them have been convicted. (It's "at least" 60 because there are over 100 "refugees" whose actual country of origin is unknown who have also been convicted of terror offenses, and some of them likely come from the banned countries, but lied about their country of origin when admitted to the U.S.). Also, some of them (like the Somali refugee who killed several people in the attack at Ohio State) were never arrested or convicted, but only because they were shot dead by cops while in the midst of their terrorist activities in the U.S.

So Robart, the idiot federal judge, not only was flatly wrong on the law, he was also flatly wrong on the facts.

This is why the law says that it is the president, and not random a-hole, holier-than-thou, uninformed lefty federal judges, who has the power to determine which foreigners get to enter the U.S.

Maine is very split between the rural and the *very rural* parts. Portland and Southern Maine might as well be Massachusetts it's so liberal and batshit crazy.

The northern reaches are reliably Republican but the numbers just don't add up for us. There are around 1.2m people in Maine, half of them live in and around Portland.

Collins however is about as useful as a football bat. You never hear about her in the news except when she crows about bringing pork home or she bucks the party line such as this case.

She's a reliable squish. Not someone I'd want next to me in a shield wall.

This is why the law says that it is the president, and not random a-hole, holier-than-thou, uninformed lefty federal judges, who has the power to determine which foreigners get to enter the U.S.

As I wrote before, if the Congress had any brains or balls they would impeach this anti-American idiot and throw him off the bench. The only reason these feral judges feel free to make any sort of insane decisions they like is because the Congress never exercises its control over the judiciary and does its part to defend the Constitution.

People who have lifetime appointments need to be held strictly liable for their actions. It is imperative that Congress exercise its checks on the judiciary in order to protect the Constitution.

___________________

Robart was never a conservative. He was pushed on Bush as part of a deal by Washington state's loony leftist senator, Patty Murray. The senate's rules allow the senators of the state where the federal judges will be serving to have a say in who gets nominated. Murray and the other Washington senator, both rabid lefty loons, would only approve like-minded leftists for their state's nominees. So Bush basically had no choice but to appoint a leftist like Robart, because there were no other choices available to him.

The big deal for Collins is the flow of naval shipbuilding contracts going to Bath Iron Works.

BIW is the fourth largest private employer in her state, and unlike the others, which are hospital systems and whatnot, the only one whose fortunes and employment levels regularly fluctuate up and down based on federal budget decisions.

Trump is talking about a major new shipbuilding program. He needs to jerk Weird Susan's leash *hard* on that and make it clear BIW ain't getting more work if she doesn't toe the line.

European naval shipbuilders produce some pretty nice kit, and if you buy it under license, they'll ship you knockdown versions to be assembled in your own country. So small yards in the USA which would not previously have been able to compete with Bath for building, say, frigates, could easily do so.

So, for those keeping track: 3 times to get someone onto the cabinet.

Once to get out of committee.

Once to end debate on the nomination.

Once to approve the nomination.

The Senate has ALWAYS moved glacially, and so does representative government as a whole. Just think back to the days when real filibusters were a thing, like what Paul and Cruz did a few years ago.

That was much more common. Also, debates were real debates where people would give speeches that were literally hours long, in succession, on a specific topic.

I think it actually moves a fair bit faster now.

There's another headline out there that says that the Syrian government has executed 20 - 50 people a day in prisons since the start of the war. Doesn't matter if it's true or not, this story is almost certainly designed to show that Obama's middle east war, was a just war. The only problem with that perspective is that Obama, with the help of McCain, Graham, Rubio, and others, started that war to bring about regime change - just like they did in Libya.

Under the establishment of both parties, this country has sponsored the decimation of the middle east. Probably a million, at least, dead.

Either Robart was too stupid and incompetent to understand that he issued an overbroad ruling that was flatly contradicted by relevant federal laws, OR Robart knew that he was issuing an overbroad ruling that was flatly contradicted by relevant federal laws, and decided to do it anyway, because he wanted to use his position as a federal judge to make a political statement against Donald Trump.

Both felt obligated to pay those donations back, which is why we have Senators who vote against their constituents. Donors come first to most of them.

495 "To be fair, I am always leery of building our military equipment overseas. It just seems like a bad idea."

The classic concept of operations was that we had better keep our own ability to build military gear so that we could scale up rapidly in the event of a major war.

That was a sensible idea, but just not workable any longer.

Globalization and trade treaties have eaten the parts of the civilian Stateside industrial base that are required to feed the protected milspec industrial base. We couldn't scale stuff like shipbuilding in a crisis even if we wanted to.

That could be fixed but it isn't getting fixed on any time scale shorter than twenty years. With a lot of cost and pain associated.

One thing that I never saw talked about much the past eight years is that Obama intentionally went after institutions that traditionally favor conservatives:

1) He tried to humiliate, marginalize, and defund the military. In addition to adding a whole bunch of various programs that only serve to draw leftwing recruits and demoralize conservative ones.

2) The IRS stuff with conservative fundraisers and groups.

3) Obamacare to force conservative religious hospitals and healthcare businesses and just straight businesses (Hobby Lobby) to fund and perform abortions.

The teachers unions and unions in general are a major part of the dem financial apparatus. Break the unions, and all of a sudden things start to change (Wisconsin.)

There is reason to go after both Collins and Murkowski but this vote isn't the reason. What happened is what has been happening in Congress since there was a Congress.

On almost every vote where there might be controversy, leadership (in this case the dreaded Mitch McConnell and his team) count the votes needed and then see how many votes they can lose from their side and politicians who think they need cover are "allowed to vote their conscience". In this case, it was obvious for weeks that the Dems were going to go after DeVos because she is huge threat both to their allies in the teacher's unions and the Dems ability to indoctrinate kids as they have been doing for decades so they could only lose 2 votes.

For whatever reasons, Collins and the Snow Queen felt they needed to posture for their constituents and were allowed to vote against the nomination and everyone in DC on both sides of the aisle has known this all along. The nomination was never in real danger.

This was all kabuki.

The last "destroyer" coming off the building ways at BIW was a _Zumwalt_ class, the size of an olde-tyme pocket battleship. Some rethinking of this is required.

Frigates are supposed to have been superseded by the Little Crappy Ship, but when the _Perry_ class frigates were a thing, Bath was the lead yard.

On the hydrofoil issue: they make excellent patrol boats, but taking them out in the deep blue water isn't such a great idea.

One can never rule out the possibility that some liberal loons on the 9th Circuit will issue an obviously incorrect and politically-motivated ruling (it has happened too many times already to ever rule it out completely), but it seems unlikely in this case. The law is clear that Trump had the power to issue the EO. The law is also clear that the state of Washington had no standing to challenge the EO. Keep in mind that the state of Arizona is in the 9th Circuit. If the judges try to re-write the law so that states now have standing to challenge the feds on specific immigration policies, that will create a whole new set of problems. I doubt the 9th wants to go there.
