Republicans Again Thwart a Democrat Boycott By Rewriting Committee Rules to Allow Vote With No Democrats Present; EPA Designee Pruitt Recommended for Floor Confirmation Vote on 11-0 Vote

"Wyatt, will there be a fight?"

"I think there must be."

The Democrats are doing what their partisan base demands. I get that.

But I seem to remember the media and other allegedly-neutral institutions castigating Republicans for "obstructing" Obama -- as their own base desired. (And Republicans only partially blocked Obama, and they voted dutifully for all his cabinet picks.)

We cannot have a country in which one party is praised for obstruction and the other demonized.

If there are two classes of citizenship in a society, then we have no society. We just have the law of the jungle in which violence can be expected to solve many disputes.

Good. People aren't objective, and we shouldn't pretend that thousands of people coming together to produce something means that it suddenly becomes objective.

The spineless, brainless, gutless Capitol Hill GOP also rubber-stamped a long list of outright radical judicial nominees of Obama's to the federal courts.

Many of these individuals made Ruth Baader-Meinhof look like Phyllis Schafly by comparison. Yet the Republicans offered up no critical scrutiny of them at all, much less mustering opposition.

It was 2/3 when the filibuster was really a filibuster--you had to stand there and make words come out of your mouth for a really, really long time.

In 1970, and again I'm a newly minted expert because I stayed in a Holiday Inn express last night, they created a two-track system; someone could filibuster a bill, and instead of all Senate business being halted by the filibuster, the minority leader could agree to let the majority leader put the filibustered bill on "standby" and go on with other business.

So the filibuster became rampant, except no one ever does an actual filibuster because they just agree to not debate whatever that thing is, and it gets left in the dust.

But they really can't do anything to stop any of these nominations. The best they can do is not vote, which is the legislative equivalent of a hissy fit.

I'm also not worred about any "National Divorce" The wacko left seems alot larger than it really is because the have the big megaphones of hollywood, academia and the press. And no, I'm not saying there won't be violence during this split. It looks like there will be, unfortunately. But again, they will be a smaller and smaller minority as people get disgusted with their actions and turn away from them.

And this is all just so ironic because alot of people not long ago were sure this same type of thing would happen republican right.

The logic of dealing harshly with insurrection is this: when a group has shown itself incapable of civil behavior and loyalty to their lawfully constituted government, then that group loses all rights of selecting their own government until such values as civility and loyalty are demonstrated to be in evidence again. Last time this happened, it took 15 years.

100 you CAN actually run a society with two classes. Hammurabi ran Babylonia pretty well this way. also, the barons with the Magna Carta.

you just had to define the classes and write the rules so that everyone knew what they were. oh, and the commoners were supposed to accept they weren't barons.

our problem here is that Babylonian nobles didn't despise the commoners doing the work, or at least they knew the king would fine the shit out of them if they abused the commoners (to the point of becoming commoners too).

Supposedly the first real filibuster was 1850.

So it certainly was not a "rule" from the beginning. It was this parliamentary trick to kill the clock and actually had people really speaking. It wasn't until civil right type legislation in the 20th century where this started becoming a new rule where 60 votes needed to advance.

To me its clear the Founder''s meant for 51 to be the number to pass a bill in the Senate, which is why they designated the Vice President as "President of the Senate" and the 51 tie breaking vote.

It doesn't mean it's not Constitutional, but the Founders did not intend for a near super majority to be needed to pass a bill in the Senate.

I've been thinking for about a year that the Democratic Party is bound for a split within a generation.

I've focused on the state level where state budgets are going to throw different parts of the Democratic coalition into direct conflict, especially with the Medicaid expansion accelerating the budget issues in deep blue states.

The activist left will demand more and more while the unions will start fighting back while they see their slice of the pie diminish. At the state level, Democrats only get so far blaming Illinois Republicans for their troubles.

I wouldn't be surprised to see the Worker's Party of New York become a kingmaker type force again in New York politics soon, on its way to a viable third party.

157 So this is the Wisconsin Democrats "run away and hide" strategy gone federal, I guess ?

They do recall how that turned out, right ? Not only did Scott Walker's public employee union reforms pass, they withstood withering court challenges, Walker himself defeated the recall effort, he was then RE-elected, and now Wisconsin helped throw the election to Trump AND they sent Republican Ron Johnson back to the senate.

They might want to re-think their strategy here. By all accounts, taken to it's logical conclusion, things only get worse for Democrats after employing the "run away" tactics.

165 "you CAN actually run a society with two classes. Hammurabi ran Babylonia pretty well this way. also, the barons with the Magna Carta. "

The British Empire ran just fine with much of the power vested in the House of Lords, and remainder in the House of Commons which was elected by voters who met strict qualifications.

The Decline of the British Empire correlates strongly with the granting of the franchise to ever-larger groups via various "Reform Acts" and "Representation of the People Acts".

Before the first Reform Act, only about one person out of 30 in the U.K. was eligible to vote.

Our own decline accelerated markedly when we switched to popular vote for the Senate, and I hope everyone here understands why it was a very good thing we still don't elect the President based on the popular vote.

I've been thinking for about a year that the Democratic Party is bound for a split within a generation.

We've said that here for years. The left has too many coalitions and
a finite pie. And they keep adding coalitions but the pie stays the
same size.

Something has to give.
.
.
.
.That plus they have pushing that changing demographics will give them a super majority for the last 10-12 years, but that isn't working as we just saw last November.

The minorities they are sucking up to tend to congregate in a few States like California, New York and a few others that go democrat no matter what. hillary won those big time and Trump wasted zero resources there because he knew he wasn't going to win them.

Instead he concentrated on the rules of the game and went for the EC sweep and it worked for him because hillary and the msm totally ignored the traditional rural Blue States and concentrated on getting out the minority vote which was never going to happen for an old white woman.

Left/liberal/Democrat - good

Conservative/Republican - misguided at best, more likely malignant and evil

They did this in the 60's/early 70's, but it seemed pretty much the hard left. Now, the soft left is signing on.

Then, they kind of went away in the 80's as the soft left kids realized they did have to work for a living. And the Democrat party actually had some adults in it back then.

Uh.... Ft. Sumter was not fired on a whim...

There was an agreement in place where Ft. Sumter could be supplied, but could not be reinforced.

The Union was sending multiple ships to the Fort, and the Confederacy thought they were sending reinforcements. The Confederacy started firing on those ships.

Most accounts say that the Fort, then started firing in support of those ships, who were under attack.

Which then led to the Confederate Batteries firing on the Fort.

Hence the Obama administrations 'Affirmatively Furthering Fair Housing' plan, to bigfoot local zoning and drop low-income housing anywhere in the country they wanted to.

Wanna guess how much of that was going to land in Republican counties and states for exactly that reason?

"So this is the Wisconsin Democrats "run away and hide" strategy gone federal, I guess ?"

And the so-called "Killer Bees" in Texas tried to do the same thing in the early 2000's, when redistricting wasn't going their way. Didn't work then, either, and that was pretty much the end of the Democrats as serious players in Texas politics.

Democrats never admit what actually happened in Texas, why it became so solidly Republican. It didn't used to be, and actually none of the Republicans here were smart enough to make that happen. (Karl Rove likes to claim he did it, but he's a big fat liar)

What happened in the late 90's, after GWB won the governor's seat and showed real appeal to the east and west Texas rural voters that had been voting Democrat since the Civil War, was that the Dem Party said "Screw 'em, we don't need 'em." And that was exactly when the Texas Dem Party decided to double down on getting Mexican votes from San Antonio and the Rio Grande Valley, and inner city votes from Dallas, Austin, and Houston. They told themselves that was sure to work, and in 2002 they nominated a fat Mexican money-launderer from Laredo named Tony Sanchez to run against Perry. They though he was a good pick because he had a few hundred million dollars in his back pocket that he had made from working long hours at his little local bank on the border. (that sounds like a joke but seriously, that was his explanation of where all that money came from.)

Texas Democrats were amazed when Dirty Sanchez "went down" , but they could never admit they were wrong. So, in every subsequent election they effectively turned themselves into the Black and Hispanic party, and told white voters (except for hard core university liberals) not to bother, they didn't need them.

And they have not won a single state wide office since.

I never dreamed I would see the national dems repeat the mistake that the Texas dems made 20 years ago, but here they are, following the script perfectly. Well, I've seen this movie. I know how it ends.

The "disenfranchised" and "youth" burn their shit down, then complain because they are "trapped" in shitty, burned out places because racist or something. What do we do? Give the government more money to "invest" in burned out, shitholes.

Trump has started to win me over in a lot of ways but I am 100% opposed to him on "infrastructure investments" for the same reason. Go to the worst shitholes in America. Without exception, they vote lock, stock, and barrel for Democrats for generations. Local, State, and Fed pour countless billions into these places and they never change. When Obama first moved into the WH, we got $1 trillion in "infrastructure investments". Think about that $1 TRILLION. What do we have to show for it, other than Sheriff Joe and a couple of road signs (the road looks the same as ever)?

It's no different than when some ghetto trash wins the lottery or Extreme Home Makeover shows up and turns their rathole into a mansion and gives them cash for life. Within 6 months to a year, they are worse off than ever and bitching about how unfairly they were treated by being gifted a windfall that should have lasted a lifetime or more.

No amount of "investment" changes who and what people are.

There was an agreement in place where Ft. Sumter could be supplied, but could not be reinforced.

The Union was sending multiple ships to the Fort, and the
Confederacy thought they were sending reinforcements. The Confederacy
started firing on those ships.

Most accounts say that the Fort, then started firing in support of those ships, who were under attack.

Which then led to the Confederate Batteries firing on the Fort.

Yup. And the way the actual shooting started in that first battle is a profound metaphor for the way the entire war started. The whole thing was an almost comedic series of false pretenses, misunderstandings and under-estimations by both sides.
The penultimate one being that neither side thought the other would really, actually fight.

369 190 We keep edging closer and closer to a society in which our betters (the left) will assign two classes depending on your political views:

Left/liberal/Democrat - good

Conservative/Republican - misguided at best, more likely malignant and evil

They did this in the 60's/early 70's, but it seemed pretty much the hard left. Now, the soft left is signing on.

Then, they kind of went away in the 80's as the soft left kids realized they did have to work for a living. And the Democrat party actually had some adults in it back then.

Not sure how it will end this time. Some different demographics.

I do know this will get worse before it gets better.

372 Has anyone pitched to Eastwood, Gibson, McConaughey, Voight and Vaughn that they should do a buddy film together? They would probably have good chemistry and the set would be a leftist light, thus pleasant, working environment.

373 It's not failure theater. It is a tactic to create more chaos and bloodshed in The streets to punish America and American Citizens. Scorched Earth. They are done with elections.

.It's too late for Kentucky and West Virginia coal mines. Eight years of obama sealed their fate, I seriously doubt they will ever come back no matter what Trump and Congress does. Way too many families relying on draw checks down there now to change anytime soon. Posted by: The Great White Scotsman at February 02, 2017 04:26 PM (le7jz)

376 Cloward-Piven. They believe they have a better shot of destroying America and rising out of the scorched earth ashes in power. Pure Militarist Marxism. And the establishment on the GOPe seems to be on board as well.

If that happens and if history is any indicator, the GOPe will be one of the first ones standing in front of the firing squads.

378 Dang: "OT: Anyone tried nomorobo.com? Supposed to stop robo calls..."

Yes. It's great. Sign up for State and Federal "NoCall" listings and add nomorobo and your phone annoyances will drop dramatically. It's easy to do and simply works if your phone company enables it. (Most do.)

381 Bertram Cabot, Jr.: "Ralph Peters was on Cavuto trashing Trump for being mean to Mexico."

Who's been pi**ing in his Kaboom! He used to be pretty reasonable, but since Trump, he's gone a bit loopy. Is it some personal animus or has he sold out to someone? I'm really puzzled because he seems very different from what he was a couple of years ago.

384 There's a reason (actually a bunch of reasons) why The Donald called Chuck You Schumer the "head clown". And the Dems are making that characterization more accurate every day in every way.

Of course a buncha clown acts that consists mostly of people wetting themselves isn't all that funny--but hey, that's what the Dems have got.
