Fake Conservatives Susan Collins and Lisa Murkowski Announce They'll Be Voting Against Education Secretary Nominee Molly DeVos

This means that she starts with only 50 votes, at most. One less than that, actually, because Jeff Sessions won't be a Senator for long (and governor will have to appoint a replacement -- and I don't know how long that takes).

Without the new Liberal Twins, the best she can hope for is a 50-50 tie, assuming a Sessions replacement willing to vote for her, with Pence breaking the tie with an Aye.

The Liberal Twins say they're against her because she doesn't seem All-In on the current education system, but rather seems All-In on school choice and vouchers.

And that is her biggest selling point. The system is failed. It has failed for 50 years, despite nonstop headlines Education In Crisis and constant tinkering and supposed fixes from the Department of Education.

It's time to let parents choose, and to make schools accountable to their customers.

They'd all get pretty good at golf, but most of them would max out pretty quicky, like by age 15. And some would be incredible golfers and would continue to improve. That's basically the ed system. A lot of students have already maxed out. No reason to create the typical American mess (public and private mixed, to mass confusion) just because some students are already maxed out.

Or, the Senate can vote again, this time with at least 50-votes to confirm.

Posted by: Christopher R Taylor at February 01, 2017 04:04 PM (39g3+) "

First, Ivanka is not Trump's wife, LOL, she's his daughter.
Melania is not in DC, she is in NYC with Barron until the end of the school year. This was announced weeks ago , that Melania would attend functions scheduled that required her presence but that she would not be in DC full time until June.

Ivanka is an appropriate substitute for her step mother as not only is she also a Trump, but she is married to one of Trump's advisors and has been given a security clearance.

Certainly I would prefer that Melania be there, but as we have complained about over the past 8 years, we don't elect a first lady, they come along as part of the package and are not expected to do anything other than traditional first lady duties. We also do not know , but I suspect, that Melania has personally sent condolences to this Seal's family, and Ivanka will be a genuine and respectful representative of the first lady's office and of the country.

105 So these two Democrats In All But Name kill the DeVos nomination and Trump announces he's closing the Department of Education (that educates precisely nobody), transferring the handful of useful functions of the now-former department to other agencies, laying-off the rest (probably 70-80 percent of the total employment of the, again, now-former department), and appointing DeVos to a position in the administration overseeing the Ed functions of the new department that doesn't need Senate confirmation.

Or, the Senate can vote again, this time with at least 50-votes to confirm.

Their choice.

Wrong and bad analogy.

Sens. Lisa Murkowski (R., Alaska) and Susan Collins (R., Maine) have each benefited from contributions from the National Education Association. Collins received $2,000 from the union in 2002 and 2008, according to the Center for Responsive Politics. Murkowski, meanwhile, has received $23,500.

It's a system that rewards the most venal and punishes the hardest working. Schools truly exemplify the 80/20 rule. 20% do 80% of the work. I repeat: according to team Trump, Ivanka has no WH or government job. They made a big issue out of this themselves. Lots of people are married to lots of people with official positions. Re Ivanka. Harry Truman is something of a parallel. His wife, Bess, hated Washington and she would only be there during the social season, and she didn't really want to do that. She would go back home for the rest of the time, and Truman's daughter Margaret would do a lot of the First Lady stuff as a substitute.

Much like Melania and Ivanka now.

So, this has all happened before. There's a Truman precedent for first daughters acting as substitute first ladies. BFD.

Good lord people. You sound like Libs.
Ivanka has managed to get out of the penthouse in Manhattan during her life. She's not some dumb rich socialite, she graduated from Wharton School of Business, and founded the Trump Hotel Chains with Eric and Don Jr. She was in charge of Acquisitions and Development in the Trump Organization and was individually responsible for the renovation of the US Post Office and development into a Trump Hotel and the $250 M renovation of Doral in Miami. She developed her own lifestyle brand , including her women's wear collection priced for the average woman that was worth $200 M when she left it when her dad became president . Her second book is due out this May, and has been honored as a Young Global Leader by the World Economic Forum. Not to mention she has three kids and helped in her dad's successful presidential bid.

But no, she just a dumb blond socialite because she hosted a fundraising party 4 years ago for a local black Dem mayor who was running for the NJ Senate seat.

Obviously, many (maybe most) are beyond convincing. Many (maybe most) say toxic things that are very damaging to American society. To the extent that they do, they should be challenged, marginalized and removed from power.

But I will continue to be civil about it.

334 >>> your comparison is lacking. this is not a pleasure trip, this is paying respects, and comforting those left behind - wife, children. it's a real stretch of imagination to compare free loaders like bo and his family to what POTUS and his daughter are doing.
....

Fair enough. I retract my comparison to the vacations but you overlooked my statement about State visits and functions.

I bring this up because, for some time, there was a lot of debate of even FLOTUS role in official stuff and I thought it was a fair question. Over the years, FLOTUS has evolved into a semi official role and I support that but disagree with the ever increasing size of staff for someone who still has absolutely zero official duties. By all means, give FLOTUS someone to help brief her on protocols involved with the accepted role, but she does not need a Chief of Staff and two dozen lackies. If she does, appoint her to an official position.

First Children, however, have been- and I think rightfully so- been deemed off limits in many respects. Where there is an exception, they get appointed to some official role.Team Trump has explicitly said Ivanka has no role.

Again, I have no doubt of her representing herself respectfully and with class. All I am saying is that The President is going in an official capacity as CIC and question if any First Daughter should be included in something like that.

I have no doubt Gorsuch is going to get confirmed one way or the other. I doubt the Dems will shoot their load on this one because once the Republicans go nuclear the Senate just becomes a smaller House of Reps. And if there is one thing all Senators love it's being more important than the House.

Just rather go slowly with rules changes when possible. No sense handing the Dems anything to complain about or run on if we don't have to.

You have to wonder whether the Dallas teacher who screamed "Die! Die!" at an image of Trump in her classroom and pantomimed assassinating the guy was among those thus gifted.

By the way, the teacher in question teaches art.

Art is an important component of the education of any civilized individual, but it's not an essential foundational component in the way that reading, writing and mathematics are.

The school at which she "teaches" is ranked 1080th out of 1692 high schools in the state of TX for attainment in basic learning.

So why is art being taught at public expense at a time and in a place when the basics aren't being mastered? Fire her ass, cut the art class, refocus.

All I'm saying is that there are protocols for these types of things and those generally exist for good reason. Counter argument: Reagan was the first president to break the protocol that the CIC should not salute and it's changed since. He asked his military advisors about it because he felt uncomfortable walking by people saluting him without some kind of acknowledgment. I agree with Reagan but this issue has come up again and again since and people went ape shit when Obama stopped and shook a Marine's hand the first time out.

If a protocol needs to change, so be it. I suggest only that it should be done with sound reasoning and full awareness of the implications that follow. I lament that many of our well founded protocols and traditions have been casually and increasingly tossed aside.

390 Have a question for the horde
I hear on the radio spots with 1 out of 5 children in this country go to bed hungry every night. I hear this and want to scream Bull but I don't have any kids. But most of you do and see their freinds, is this possible?

Posted by: Skip at February 01, 2017 04:54 PM (Frvrc)

Listen closely to the phrasing. That's usually the biggest tell. Regardless, they may be hungry when they go to bed (like probably every 8 year old boy), but every one of those same hungry kids is getting free lunches and breakfasts, not to mention food stamps, WIC, etc. We also won't mention if their parents have cell phones, TV, cars, etc. If you are buying HBO instead of feeding your kid...

I've recently been repeatedly told obesity is the same kids' biggest problem, too. It can't be both.

The Wexners are extremely philanthropic. They have donated huge sums of money to Jewish and Catholic charities, and have donated/pledged $100 M to Ohio State specifically to it's medical facilities, (now Wexner Medical Center) , James Cancer Research Hospital and to the Wexner Center of the Arts at OSU. Both personally and through his L Brands, he has donated over $150 M to the Columbus Foundation and his own Wexner Foundation has provided funding for Jewish individuals who wish to pursue rabbinical studies, and another program for Israeli public officials who wish to earn a masters from the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard.

Without philanthropic rich folks, a lot of public events, buildings. etc. wouldn't happen.

Remember, America's library system, particularly in small towns is due to Andrew Carnegie. Carnegie Libraries were possible through his funding.....

I agree. I think it may also be the case that Trump thinks his daughter's presence will be of some comfort to the families. It suggests that he takes this responsibility very seriously.

I see you're point (others also). Again, I have no question on the intent nor level of respect and sincerity.

I asked the question from the standpoint of protocol. A lot of people have, rightfully IMO, had issues with several things that politicians have done over the last lots of years that have gone against long traditions and protocols.

Second, I brought it up because Trump has made such a big deal that Ivanka has no official role.

I'm not offended. I have no doubt on sincerity or intentions. I do, however, support maintaining separation between acting in official and unofficial capacities, particularly when it involves military and circumstances such as this.

398 I hear on the radio spots with 1 out of 5 children in this country go to bed hungry every night.

Its a horsecrap statistic. Here's how they come by it:

They check a family for a month. If the kids miss one meal in a day a certain number of times during a month, they're considered to be going hungry (and they probably are, when I was a kid I could have eaten 24 hours a day).

So they average this out, projecting across the whole nation, and averaging the number of meals missed overall. 20% of kids are going without food! Its games with statistics.

Its how they came up with that idiotic "food desert" crap a few years back. Not that they didn't have access to food, but because they didn't have a Whole Foods in the neighborhood.

Because it's not. It's a relatively minor rule change caused by Democrats acting like assholes.

The nuclear option refers to changing the rules for Supreme Court appointments and only Supreme Court appointments and the rules that govern them. Preemptively changing the rules before the process even starts would be a radical departure from decades of precedent and potentially an unforced error.

Gorsuch is a replacement for Scalia. He does not change the court at all assuming he actually voted like Scalia. The Democrats would by idiotic to filibuster this nomination but if they do THEN you drop the nuclear rule and it is on them.

Let's stop pretending that politics doesn't rule over everything that is done in DC. The Donald is learning this rapidly.

Not to me.

I'll drop this after this post. I asked because I was curious on thoughts on the protocol aspect but this has gotten distorted into other stuff.

I'll use an example to try to demonstrate why I asked:
One of the hard things about being President, any president, is that 24/7 all of your actions are viewed through the lens of your official role. People voted for you, not your family. You have a job and responsibilities to the nation, not your family. This is tough because family is part of your life 24/7 also, so it has always been important to maintain distinct separations for a lot of very good reasons.

How often (not defending this, BTW) do presidents get endless reporting, questions, and accusations made because someone "close to" them said something? For this reason, distinction is made between official actions and non official actions, between who goes where and who does not, who says what to whom...

It was never a question of respect or implied aspersions to anyone's character or what someone might or might not appreciate. There are very good reasons for separating official and non official things and this is blurry, irrespective of intentions which I am sure are good and sincere.

This was a major rule change for one big reason named Orrin Hatch. This RINO was one of the couple of squishes that were *against* eliminating the filibuster for judicial appointment approvals. The Dems should have been patting him on the back and calling him a hero for standing up to the "extremists". Instead they have ticked him off and disgusted him to the point where he's figured out that their "civility" is a scam and he's ready to rewrite the rules. Now there's a good chance he's going to be on our side in the general Senate.

Agreed. And it was always this way for the CIC, until Reagan. I was curious about this and went back and read about Reagan's reasoning and saw his point, particularly because of the type of man he was. Here's a fine Marine at the door of my chopper and I'm supposed to just walk by? That would feel disrespectful to me, as a civilian, if I were in that position. I'd want to acknowledge them in some way.

Still, this comes up with every new president ever since. Is it proper for the CIC to return a salute or not? Pre Reagan, the answer was No. Post Reagan, it's gotten blurry and twisted as both a sign of respect and disrespect, depending on who wants to complain.

Posted by: Damiano at February 01, 2017 05:25 PM (71OEY)

423 Damiano, drop it. You're coming across all creepy and weird.

No, I understand what he's getting at, I just don't think it applies in this situation. He's right that the president has to be very careful because his job is 24 hours a day without a break. Everything he does is a public statement about the office and the country -- something Obama didn't grasp.

But taking family along to visit with a grieving family is not a violation of protocol nor in any way problematic. If President Obama had taken one of his daughters along to some visit to a soldier's family, I wouldn't have minded, or seen a problem with that, either. Something I strive to be is consistent when it comes to politics and politicians. I know I'm not very good at it, but I think we all should.

Well here's the thing. The President of the United States is a civilian leader of the military so the rules for military and civilian behavior neither one are exactly applicable to him. He's in a unique position, so as long as its consistent, respectful, and honorable I am fine with the reaction.

Which is exactly why, as I have been saying, sometimes it's best to let your opponent fuck up rather than taking pre-emptive action.

Let the Democrats show their asses to the world and make it clear why rules are being changed. We lose absolutely nothing but gain the moral high ground and take away the ability of the left and the media to shriek and howl about power hungry Republicans.

We will never have the media behind us. Not ever. So why give them ammo when we can accomplish the goals we want while coming of as the good guys?

I don't think that's it. I think it's really all about power. Susan Collins has been doing this stuff for years for one reason: it makes her into the most popular person in the Senate. Presidents invite her to the Oval Office to try to woo her. Party leaders, TV journalists, and big money lobbyists all compete to get her attention. All eyes are on Senator Collins and all the speculation is about how she'll vote. No, Collins has no principles, except to stay unpredictable enough that both sides think she might swing their way. She's the Anthony Kennedy of the Senate.

That's probably the end-of-the-day shakeout from it. There isn't really a good way of returning a salute aside from actually returning a salute. And he is the CinC after all; I'm probably making too much of it. It's just a very specific honor rendered, with rules on how it's done and when it isn't. 440 @425

I completely agree.

Regrettably, one of the shit parts of being president is that someone is always out to call you out on something and take advantage of you in some way.

I loathe Obama with every fiber of my being. On his first Marine One ride, he stopped and shook the Marine's hand who was saluting him. Awkward as hell of the Marine, who kind of stumbled between "shit, do I break the regs and lower my salute to shake his hand or be disrespectful and not shake his hand".

Personally, I probably would have done the same as Obama my first time out because, as a civilian and out of wanting to treat the Marine with respect as a person and not a doorman.

A lot of people, however, freaked the fuck out.

Ike was lucky. He knew the protocol and was well used to not saluting out of uniform or uncovered and as a general. For people more from civilian life, it's hard. Especially business people. It's the height of disrespect to simply walk by anyone who acknowledges you.

Protocols matter and it's way too easy to get them wrong with the best intentions and have a slew of unnecessary fall out to deal with.

445 "On point is if Melania isn't going and maybe not picking up FLOTUS trips I see no problem if Ivanka goes."

There's precedent. Several Presidents were widowers and generally had one of their daughters (or other female relative) act in the ceremonial role as hostess.

James Buchanan, the only permanent bachelor President (who was quite possibly gay) used his orphaned niece (who he'd adopted as his daughter).

Grover Cleveland, the only other one who had never been married, and who was definitely NOT gay (he'd been named as the father of an illegitimate child, and paid child support to the mother) wound up marrying a 21 year old hottie in his first term. Before that, his sister did the ceremonial honors.

I seem to recall several other cases where the First Lady was traveling, ill, or whatever and the First Daughter/Niece/Cousin stepped up to the plate but I'm too lazy to Google them.

With respect to the saluting... military customs do change, and it seems to me that if anyone is allowed to change them, the Commander in Chief is the one. Clearly no disrespect was intended. Quite the opposite.

Posted by: Pepe le Mooko at February 01, 2017 06:36 PM (CASVy)

446 Really, like energy, you need an "all of the above" approach. There is no way in places like Maine and Alaska that non-public education would fit in. However, those Senators should realize that they are Republican and as such education should be left to the states and the head of education shouldn't have any say on how schools are structured assuming she isn't giving out tons of grant money to the states.

As for the bozos on here, same thing: If you are all gung ho for charter schools and private schools, etc. that's fine, but to be a true conservative, that should be left to the states and not to the Secretary of Education.

I merely want an Education Secretary that says she/he will not put any mandates on school districts with the grants they receive.

447 Collins may be the best Republican you can get from Maine, but Murkowski has been primaried before, only to run and win as an independent with a Democratic endorsement. It's time for Alaska to elect a real Republican as opposed to a second-generation oligarchic corruptocrat.

451 26 Well, they got 56 votes for Tillerson so it isn't inconceivable they could pull at least ONE Democrat in a red state.

But these two really do suck.

25 % of democrat delegates are teachers or teachers spouses and the teachers Union is one of the top election spenders, so no dem is going against them.

452 450 14 An artist I follow that lives in Michigan has been screaming that he doesn't want this woman anywhere near his son's education. But he never says WHY, he just yells about how horrible she is.

Come to think of it, the kid has nature and nurture working against him. He's fukked.

90 So these two Democrats In All But Name kill the DeVos nomination and Trump announces he's closing the Department of Education (that educates precisely nobody), transferring the handful of useful functions of the now-former department to other agencies, laying-off the rest (probably 70-80 percent of the total employment of the, again, now-former department), and appointing DeVos to a position in the administration overseeing the Ed functions of the new department that doesn't need Senate confirmation.

Or, the Senate can vote again, this time with at least 50-votes to confirm.

Their choice.

454 When I heard the news my first thought is that there must be some way for Trump and McConnell to punish them. The democrats have far better party discipline than the republicans. It is time the republicans start bringing the hammer to the dissenters.
