FWIW, most customer service lines are contracted to third parties that are rated (and thus rate their employees) on how many calls they handle in an hour and how many issues they close. So when you call a support line with an issue that really can't be "resolved" by them you hurt that employee's metrics which could put them at risk.

Not that we shouldn't complain, but the better route is probably emails and cooperate contact numbers.

Julia Leftist on Outnumbered at noon really aggravated Meggie with her continuous screeching about Sean Spicer telling a complete lie in the briefing on Sunday. Julia was insisting in her sternest , angry voice and hand motions that Spicer got up in front of everyone and told a complete fabrication of the numbers watching the inauguration and she also began defending the "mistake" the reporter made who said that the MLK statue had been removed. Also was barking about how the Republicans could have replaced Obamacare for the past six years but did nothing.(Both ends of that statement are lies) and now are going to repeal it with nothing to replace it(Democrat talking points)

Meggie started in on Julia with claws out and then began to bare teeth. She was pissed, I can't paraphrase it and do justice to it. She got loud and forceful enough that a couple additional couch sitters jumped in and then all were talking over each other and I turned it off.

Meggie has redeemed herself with me a good bit this past couple months.

Because they would find themselves in front of HR and the supervisory administration in their department for disciplinary action. Because of the office of diversity. They would be charged with violating student right, discrimination, sexual harassment, and several more assorted violations earning them a loss of their job. Most librarians at a university are not tenured positions. And many are students, or grad students, doing work study programs. So the students will be sent to more diversity training and the actual paid employees will be terminated.

Well ... they did totally kill the American memory industry, because they had cracked open chips and copied them. There was finally a WTO ruling (LOL) against the Japanese companies some 10 years later, but by then the damage was all done.

That was just one example of many.

If the Chinese are so smart how come they still live with a quality of life that would cause a revolution in America? Answer. They aren't so smart. Some American's live to find someone who is kicking our ass.

Posted by: JackStraw at January 23, 2017 01:20 PM (/tuJf)

I agree. But, if we had continued on the silly "free importation and free access to foreigners" of our markets while Americans were restricted from doing anything in theirs (the classic "free trade" bs) then eventually they would kick our ass - even though their standard of living would still be dogshit.

And the Chinese are certainly plenty smart. They have never lacked for genius. Where they have failed is that their collectivist culture has never allowed for them to exploit their own genius. The Chinese invented movable type but no one ever benefited from it - not even the Chinese. It took the Europeans to independently invent it hundreds of years later for the world to finally have it spread and everyone benefited. Same for gunpowder ...

The Chinese aren't into advancement and progress. THey are oriented around stability, instead, and that stops them from capitalizing on lots of their natural talents and abilities. But that doesn't stop them from stealing stuff from others and running knock-offs until the cows come home.

Every society has it's share of smart people. And an even large number of average or less. If you travel around China you will see a few modern cities and buildings and an endless number of rural slums, poverty and backwardness.

What differentiates societies is the degree to which smart people are free to explore their ideas and profit from them. We see a lot of smart, high achieving Chinese in American society but it's not because the Chinese are inherently smarter it's because like waves of immigrants before them they tend to be the most motivated from their countries and they take advantage of the opportunities offered to them here.

You know what you don't see a lot of at wymen's marches? High achieving immigrants, Chinese and otherwise. Not a coincidence.

Men, however, follow too close, are rabid for going thru the intersection first, and if you're driving on a busy highway, the asshat who is weaving through traffic at high speed changing lanes and taking huge risks--that's always a guy.

So my guess is that women are "worse drivers" and men are better BUT have more accidents and when they have them they have bigger ones because they were going faster, or what my grandpa would have called "hot-rodding."

347 270-----STEM majors often average closer to 3.0 gpas because they take rigorous courses, meanwhile the average for "X" studies are often closer to 3.7+ because they just need to show up and parrot their professor to get a guaranteed A.

When I was in college, I actually took a lot of math courses to pump my GPA! Seriously. In the humanities there is always a certain amount of subjectivity in the grade.
If you want a safe A but don't want to waste your time in some Mickey Mouse course, math is perfect. You either get it right or not---doesn't matter if the teacher hates or loves you.

Of course, that was mumble-mumble years ago. Okay, mumble-mumble decades, when humanities courses were far more rigorous and there weren't all of those grievance studies and silly subjects that could be aced by parroting.

354 This is why I'm glad Madonna is being interviewed by the SS for saying she wanted to blow up the WH. It's time we started treating these crazy Lefty protesters like Giuliani and his broken window approach. When protest has been enabled and supported to the point that people feel comfy encouraging others to assassinate the president (regardless of who is in office), sucker-punching/lighting someone's hair on fire for liking a different candidate, and yelling out chants w/a bullhorn in a freakin' library it is a major breakdown in civil society. However, that is her signature move. She will enter a freeway doing about 35 miles an hour, cut across 5 lanes of traffic and putz along in the fast lane until 50 feet before her exit, then a hard right.

360 Chelsea Clinton will never be President.

Posted by: Ignoramus at January 23, 2017 01:34 PM (SIY7D

I wonder if Chelsea, at age 10, was fluent in three languages as is Barron? I always felt that the children of presidents and VP should be 100% left alone as far as the media is concerned. So I never participated in the nasty, "Chelsea is so ugly" comments that used to populate early internet chat rooms, etc. when her dad was President. Or the speculation of the Bush twins, etc.

But the left has no more concern about children from the time they decide not to chop them up and suck out the inconvenience to when they are teenagers being taken for an abortion and given boob jobs and told that changing into the opposite sex is a sign of how in touch they are with what is real and how they can be a standard for the world. Children to leftists are just another prop, another virtue signal.

Chelsea's mother is example A , when she arranged to have the little child actress come running to meet her on the sidewalk after she was miraculously cured of pneumonia. Kid was a prop in that lie.

Posted by: JackStraw at January 23, 2017 01:33 PM (/tuJf)

That's just not true. There are inventions that are societal milestones - like writing. Not every society has produced geniuses that have been able to come up with these sorts of inventions. It has been up to a few societies, that had the geniuses that invented these things, to bring them into the world. The Chinese problem was never with this sort of invention - the Chinese have had tons of milestone, groundbreaking inventions long before anyone else, hundreds and even a thousand years before. But it was never the Chinese (or anyone) who benefited from them. It was only thanks to the expansionist Mongols that a lot of Chinese inventions made their ways into the broader world, and for many others things would have to wait until the Europeans/Indians/meditteraneans independently invented them and spread them (and the Indians suffered from a lot of the same cutlural issues with exploiting these things as the Chinese).

But, in the end, China has had almost all of the important inventions made at home (if never actually used). The level of genius among the Chinese is distinctly higher (and it's only a handful of these geniuses who are needed, not millions or even thousands) than all but a small number of other cultures.

370 If you see someone back out without looking, driving too slow, changing lanes by drifting, not creeping into the intersection to make a left, and other assorted dumb broad driving, it's a woman.

Some women drive scared as you pointed out. They annoy me, but at least I can deal with them. However, more and more women are driving they way you said men do. Anyone who has ever been to China knows that the chances of China "taking over the world" in business or anything else are next to non-existent. The country is an absolute shambles and know one knows what the f*ck they are doing there - their factories can essentially only churn out cheaply made mass produced sh*t and their military technology is a joke. The ChiComs purposefully and vehemently killed off all their educated people several generation's ago ( all that were left after the REALLY smart people fled to the West prior to the commies taking over) AND suspended education for almost a generation after that.

Read Wild Swans - Three Daughters of China, by Chang - you will never feel the same about China again - but you will really really hate the ChCcoms and Mao and his wife in particular. Mao and Mrs Mao were extreme A-holes.

That has more to do with a very stable, peaceful long term culture than anything else, I suspect. You cannot develop useful ideas or philosophies if you live in an area constantly wracked by war, pestilence, storms, and disaster. You're just too busy staying alive.

Yet at the same time, if things are too easy, you have no pressure to develop new ideas or try new things. If the climate is comfortable, the food is plentiful, and you're not populated very densely so there's little interaction between hostiles, you tend to stagnate too, as a culture.

401 i think women can be as fine a driver as men, but their natural personality tendencies incline them to distraction worse than men. For men, driving is often a visceral battle experience: pass that guy, block him off, plan ahead your next move, feel the power of the machine. For women its a time to chat, read, check makeup, change the radio, text...

I mean obviously these are over generalizations and so on, but that's been my observation at least.

Parallel parking is often the worst skill for any driver because it is usually not one practiced constantly (although people who drive into work in cities probably get the most practice.)

I recently had to start doing it myself and it is amazing how the instructions from driver ed come back:

1) Pull Parallel to car ahead of space.
2) Cut wheel all the way to the right.
3) Back up until side view mirror is even with bumper.
4) Straighten wheel.
5) Back up while cutting wheel to left.

403 Looking at pictures of radical protesters I am struck with how profoundly unattractive they are. And it's not just extra pounds, they just don't make the effort. They lack basic good grooming.

I'm thinking that many of these college protesters were kids who were never asked out in high school and were ignored by their peers. Then they get to college and find they can get a sense of importance and power by joining a radical group and disrupting things. That gives them a lot of power because the administration grovels at their feet.

I have sympathy for anybody who had a tough time in hs. I hated hs myself. My sympathy disappears when they take their revenge by being such obnoxious shits in college.

I don't think they are screaming over racism or sexism or because someone wrote Trump on the sidewalk. That's a substitute for other things going on with them.

Gates of Fire is the most manly book I have ever read, and that includes Conn Iggulden's excellent books on Genghis Khan, Julius Caesar etc. It makes Hemingway's books look like something excerpted from Good Housekeeping on pink chiffon.

Stability became the most important value, socially and otherwise, and they closed themselves off from their neighbors largely because there wasn't much their neighbors had that they didn't. 453 Looking at pictures of radical protesters I am struck with how profoundly unattractive they are. And it's not just extra pounds, they just don't make the effort. They lack basic good grooming.

"Feminism was established so as to permit unattractive women easier access to the mainstream."
Rush Limbaugh, rule #24

When I first heard that I chuckled but thought "come on, that's just mean." Feminism's origins were pretty reasonable, often women were treated like idiot children or almost property. Mad Men was not an exaggeration.

But the more I thought about it and observed life, I realized how profound and smart that was. Not in its literal sense, but in the sense that radicalism is almost entirely focused on mainstreaming the weird, the freaky, the aberrant, and the perverted.

There was a time when the left was about justice: blacks are treated like trash, women are treated poorly, handicapped need access to areas without a struggle, etc.

But for decades now, more than a quarter century at least, the left has been about mainstreaming the bizarre and fringe. That's the entire point of the "privilege" crap; its an attempt to make normality seem elite and extreme so that the bizarre and abnormal seems normal by comparison.

456 I'm thinking that many of these college protesters were kids who were never asked out in high school and were ignored by their peers. Then they get to college and find they can get a sense of importance and power by joining a radical group and disrupting things. That gives them a lot of power because the administration grovels at their feet.

I was listening to Jordan Peterson talk about kids at play. Kids play together and build a progressive stack of social skills. When they are 9 they work on x and when they are 12 they work on y, having mastered x.

A parent that rewards the wrong behavior (he said that a hockey player smashed his stick when he lost) will hold back development and they will never catch up. Kids must interact with other kids different ages, but interacting with adults is only necessary for emergencies.

I would disagree, the greatest advances in technology was for profit during the industrial revolution, from the beginnings of iron smelting up to the early 1900's.

These technologies were modified for warfare, but only as a side note and to make a profit for the manufacturers.

The advances in German and American technology in the second world war was allowed almost completely because of breaking down previous limits imposed on technological advances by private industries by governmental meddling in the economy under National Socialism and under FDR's new deal, and shutting down of access to resources, banking, markets and "allowable" production.

Well I probably stated my point poorly. I didn't mean "conflict" I meant "disastrous obliteration." As in, not much coming out of the Jews during the Holocaust or the French during the 100 years war. If you live in a place that is so constantly being wracked by disaster you have no time, energy, or resources for anything except bare survival, you're not going to be innovating anything.

518 Just hearing parts of Spicer's first press conference - hilarious, in various ways.

So, McCain let the world know that he thought withdrawal from the TPP - something he can do nothing about - is a mistake! Wow, McCain.

The guy who thought it was good politics to publicly admit he didn't understand economics, during a presidential campaign.

So - not just clueless on economics (completely believable, given that he's just not very smart), but politically clueless enough to advertize his meagre intellectual capacity.

So listen up and take notes when he offers his wisdom on matters such as the TPP.

Hilarious.

527 We had an historic period where scientific advances had huge practical applications, and many advances created opportunities for others.

e.g., the Wright brothers needed an aluminum engine block to solve the weight / lift barrier. But pure aluminum was practically unobtainable until we had lots of cheap electricity.

e.g., the Roeblings first got good at making "wire rope" which led to their creating suspension bridges including the iconic Brooklyn Bridge.

I was a little over the top. I'll downgrade my "most" to "many", but with the caveat "many of the most important". The 20th century provides a classic example with nukes. It was the exigencies of war that led America to the first (and only, for a while) nuclear power - and this was a total game-changer. Sure, this all would have been developed eventually (as the science was closing in on it, itself) but without WWII and the absolute need to have it IMMEDIATELY nuclear development would have been spread more over the globe and the subsequent chaos would have, likely, been something to behold (not in a good way).

Business is a great incubator for invention. One of the best. Lots of math was developed just to keep track of, and measure, and accumulate wealth - writing, too. But war and conquest are right up there.

Posted by: ThePrimordialOrderedPair at January 23, 2017 02:21 PM (zc3Db)

558 Part of that is also driver on the highway not paying attention to merging traffic. I have seen a couple times when they seem to not be paying attention to people trying to merge on their left but accelerate in pace, slow down, etc.

Posted by: Aetius451AD at January 23, 2017 02:01 PM (92kX2)

When driving on the freeway, I try to avoid driving in the outside lane, simply because that's where all the merging takes place. But when I am about 2-3 exits away from my intended one, I will start moving to the right, so that I can be in the outside lane when my exit comes up.

I will break this rule, though, if I see a traffic jam building a long way ahead. Get over to the outside lane, so I can bail at the nearest exit, and take surface streets. I did this one time in downtown L.A., trying to get from West Hollywood to Pomona, in a rental car, with three American friends with me. "You can't do that." "Watch me."

Right past some sort of hobo jungle, with bums standing around burning trash barrels, etc. But I kept right on rolling, moving constantly north and east, and found the I-10, and away we went.
