Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | The Media Has Assassinated ThemselvesIt's a hard world, kid. It's twice as hard if you're stupid. And the media is very, very stupid indeed. And emotional. And partisan. And unprofessional. Mollie Hemingway notes four recent -- as in, the past couple of days -- new outbreaks of the media's self-arson. It's not just that they are chiefly in the business of #FakeNews these days -- it's that when one media source creates #FakeNews, the rest of the Herd of Low-Intellect Pack Animals begins retweeting it and republishing it without a single one of these idiots bothering to check a damn thing. Mollie's first example is the New York Times' #FakeNews claim that Rick Perry only recently came to understand that as Secretary of Energy, he would be in charge of safeguarding the US' nuclear arsenal. This despite the fact that when Perry accepted the nomination, he said:"I look forward to engaging in a conversation about the development, stewardship and regulation of our energy resources, safeguarding our nuclear arsenal, and promoting an American energy policy that creates jobs and puts America first."As David St. Hubbins said: "Ah well that's just nitpicking, isn't it?" Becket Adams examines the unsourced garbage nature of this #FakeNews garbage, but also shows you all of the media -- and I do mean all of the media -- that ate this up and then vomited it back up to the world. Well, not all of the legacy media. One outlet, New York magazine actually bothered to do some actual thinking. Here, they come very close to committing the crime of actual journalistic skepticism: Yesterday, the New York Times posted a story by Coral Davenport and David Sanger about Donald Trump's energy secretary nominee, former Texas governor Rick Perry, that quickly went viral. That's because the article, posted under the headline "'Learning Curve' As Rick Perry Pursues a Job He Initially Misunderstood," made a rather astounding claim: that at the time he was tapped to head the department, Perry didn't even understand that one of its primary purposes is to maintain the security of America's nuclear weapons and facilities. Journalists everywhere, myself included, tweeted out the story as just another bright-red data point about Donald Trump's lack of fitness to govern. But since the story went online, a bunch of (mostly) conservative critics and outlets has argued that the story falsely impugns Perry. They make a very convincing case.Mollie's third example is this amazing headline. A Yale professor of computer science, widely considered an actual genius in his field, criticized unexamined liberal assumptions choking the academy. Here's how the National Laughstock headlined this: Comments(Jump to bottom of comments)1

I think you make a category error here presuming that fake news reporters in the fake news media are making mistakes in propagating fake news.
The job of the media in an authoritarian state isn't to present the news, its to present the narrative that the government wants. The way that #FakeNews turned on the media is a perfect example of the principle of "if you're explaining yourself, you're losing."
The general public doesn't care that you say your own fake news is just sloppy reporting when their fake news is malicious, and the fact that the media has had to split hairs like this in their own defense shows just how out of touch they are. They didn't realize just how bad their reputation was with most Americans that we won't just accept their word any more as the truth. Not only that, but I don't think they realized how bad at their job that they've become either. Posted by: joe, living dangerously at January 19, 2017 03:30 PM (KUaJL) 42

I'm just going to devil's advocate this for fun. Didn't media economics choose this for them? I know that everyone is all pish posh Walter Cronkite was a liberal, but in his day the Tiffany network used its profits to support the news operation. The New York Times was the paper of record and had bureaus everywhere. People bought ink on dead trees. Ink on dead trees is yesterdays news and nobody will tolerate that any more. Pay models have largely not worked, except for business critical information. So it's all click bait. Who has the money for real journalism and where is it supposed to come from? Willow'd in last thread, but deals with the despicable networks so I'll repost:
I was flipping channels last night and the beginning of L&O:SVU came on. Was a rich kid hitting on a waitress at a party bragging that he lived in the hotel. I was like oh crap, this is a thinly veiled Trump dig episode, isn't it? So I decided to watch the potential idiocy. I was not disappointed! Trump character in the show is a 75 year old billionaire businessman sexist pig Hef like playboy. His grandson who lives with him had sex with the waitress in the apartment he shares with Trump. Grandpa Trump then puts quaaludes in a drink after they have sex and rapes the waitress. His Trump-like family tries to protect him, but eventually the dad of the grandson reveals to his son that grandpa Trump raped his mom, also using quaaludes, which is why his parents divorced. Grandson comes clean about everything on the stand and grandpa Trump gets convicted of rape. Classy, NBC, to air this ep the SAME WEEK Trump is being sworn in. All I can say is Of Course. Of course. Around where I live, you can't mention Ben Carson without somebody doing the "It doesn't take a brain surgeon" straight line. And then somebody else will say, "But it it does, we're covered," or word to that effect. Hilarity ensues.
Let me remind you that "HRC WNB POTUS" is not going out of style. About a month ago, a buddy at the bar was bitching about how busy he's been with his many works, and I rolled the line out. Practically raised a cheer from the whole room, and this in a Dem county. Well, I thinks, that's one for the books. Last week, I was at the funeral of our gun club president. He was a guy who had a shirt that said TROUT: Make America Fish Again. Many fine things were said about that fine guy, and as I was about to leave the luncheon (one hell of a luncheon, as you'd guess), I shook his son's hand, and, to have something to say, said, "At least he lived to see Obama gone, and Trump elected." BOSEG, a hand on the shoulder mighty like a hug, tears in eyes, the son said, "That's what he said to me." Posted by: Stringer Davis at January 19, 2017 03:40 PM (H5rtT) 92

It will be a very long time before the alleged "media" will get any sort of respect from the public at large, if at all. But of course, when you step back, take a look and see that they aren't merely biased in favor of the Left and that they ARE the Left, then it all comes into sharp focus. The Democrats have made themselves into a fringe, regional party and because they are a part of it, the Media as we have known and loathed it have indeed destroyed themselves in the process. My wife once asked me, in the comany of friends, whether I considered myself to be a working man or an "Intellectual". I said "Working man:, of course, and stuck to it despite the raised eyebrows. This is in Connecticut, where it is declasse to not be an intellectual.
What was not asked was "Why?", and the answer is that while I do enjoy lively intellectual stimulation of all sorts, I am disgusted by what the self-proclaimed "intellectual" class has become, and would as soon associate myself with them as with Klansmen, not that there is much daylight between those two these days. AtC shared this comment from WaPo previously in an unrelated commentary. It was posted at the National Laughingstock in response to their story about Gelernter. Drink in this bullshit.
Michael Berndtson 8:57 AM EST This pick has Peter Thiel's stink all over it. Peter Thiel being the bachelor Austrian immigrant who is helping The Donald on his transition. The last time the world experience an Austrian bachelor, things didn't go all that well. Both Thiel and Gelernter of course being misunderstood yet glorified IT nerds. Anyway, code jockeying, regardless of complexity in efforting, is not science in the traditional sense. It's pretty much mechanics. Now we got an alpha nerd in charge of science. The dudes the Betsy Devos of science - with less Calvinism elected and more god's chosen. The best advice is never take advice from unattractive IT support dudes - regardless of Ivy League stature. Many computer dudes have had their hearts crushed when Sally the hot liberal arts chick with liberal thoughts and wishes brushes him off for the handsome jock in upper management. I'm more interested in why he got the unabomber all flustered. Say what you will about Ted Kaczynski, at least he followed through with Silicon Valley's mantra of "move fast and break things." And of course the whole behind the scenes "disruption" thing our nerds love. Zuckerberg et al are such posers. As AtC said, "Pro tip, if you start a sentence with 'Say what you will about Ted Kaczynski' just don't finish that sentence." Yeah. Pretty much. Also, I love the implication that Peter Thiel, a gay libertarian, is akin to Hitler (an "Austrian bachelor"). That's laughable in so many respects, not least of which being Thiel isn't Austrian. Yesterday I unfollowed 2 old friends (ex-gf and former roommate) on fakebook because I want to punch them. Not once in the last 25 years have I ever wanted to punch them.
It's not for what they say. It's because they are so self righteous, smarmy and reactionary to everything now that there's really no reason to regard anything they believe as rational and well considered, which they used to be. They are so politicized that any topic turns into a flame war about Trump. A year ago we could still have a respectable disagreement or discussion but I do not know these people anymore. The debate I was having with myself from the election was unfollow or unfriend. I decided not to burn any bridges. Posted by: Skunky Choom at January 19, 2017 03:45 PM (u/p7K) 123
I'm antiintelectual myself. I value intelligence, particularly among those who acknowledge known unknowns and unknown unknowns, but intellectual doesn't really mean anything to do with intelligence nor wisdom once the progressives got their hands on that word. Rather like most words progressives think have good associations and thus claim for themselves, it means something entirely different and often the outright opposite. Including most of the words they use to describe themselves, like progressive and liberal.

================ There's never been a lot of real journalism. Mostly journalists just repeat what other people say. You do get more work on stories they invest in - research, back up interviews with multiple sources. But that's not what you get most of the time. Most of the time its just gossip. Most so called intellectuals I've come across, are educated, vice intelligent. To get educated, you must sit down, and regurgitate back onto a Test, what some Authority told you... either the Professor, or the Text Book. That Text Book, or Professor, are usually written by other Educated people... ie... they learned it by sitting down and spewing back onto the test, what others told them was correct. Its interesting that College is now not about Free Speech, but about Speech Codes... Not about Free Thought... but about Group Think... And this is the environment, that creates, "intellectuals"... It's interesting that Ben Carson is much maligned by the MBM, obviously because it is impossible for a mere colored to leave the plantation without help from Mr. Whitey Democrat.
My dad was in academic medicine, in a specialty far removed from Carson's, yet he had heard of him in a purely medical context. Apparently the guy was so damned good at what he did that he was known across the entire profession. Posted by: CharlieBrown'sDildo at January 19, 2017 03:46 PM (rF0hx) I was talking to Bander about Carson running HUD last night and noted that on the one hand he knows nothing about housing stuff via professional background and on the other hand he may be the world's greatest living PEDIATRIC NEUROSURGEON which, as Jonah Goldberg (or maybe Geraghty) noted is basically as close to playing God on Earth as a human can get so I'm pretty damn sure that he can learn things very quickly. Also, wasn't he head of surgery at Johns Hopkins? Yeah, I think he knows something or other about running a complex organization full of massive egos. The MFM had a chance to step back and reassess once they found that they had believed their own lies so bad that they talked themselves into a massive defeat. But they simply could not admit that.
So they have doubled down on their hatred of Trump and the public is not standing for it. They have lost all credibility. CNN is failing miserably and if not for airports and doctors offices would be bankrupt. And yet they continue to lie. I think the old saying about "that which can not exist will not last" is about to come true. They are now starting to lose the doctor's offices. I have never seen anything on either of my local doctor's offices but Fox. CNN has been banished there. Posted by: Vic We Have No Party at January 19, 2017 03:53 PM (mpXpK) 171

They all voted yes as I remember, and were immediately voted out of office in 2010, and Pelosi's attitude was, heh, we only want pure democrats or something to that effect. Kimmel is a perfect example of Ace's conclusion.
His tone on twitter is more inconsistent than ever and he's calling a nominee a PoS. But he has no power here! The right and left have their conclusions, but the Trump doubters are now seeing all this stupid and beginning to jettison mainstream media as well. The bias is writ large and impossible to ignore. Kimmel's efforts are only proving the point the Trump Train has been trying to make all along. And so MSM's head honchos continue to double down and freak out, thinking that because they're rich and famous their opinion must matter and people must listen. But Americans outside our 25 or so largest cities seem to have finally learned that neither "rich" nor "famous" is synonymous with "smart." Many of the rich and famous are lucky assholes, some of them may work hard, but America knows fully well they're not the geniuses who will solve our problems. We aren't a technocracy, and if we were, we sure wouldn't pick an idiot late show host who couldn't manage to eke a degree out of two different state schools. Dropping out is only a statement if you were attending something involving engineering or science at an Ivy. So as their ship continues to list hard to starboard, taking on water after failing to navigate the minefields in the Sea of Trump, MSM'll ignore the real problems and continue throwing sea water on the electrical fire in the mess, ever angrier that it is not righting their ship. Because they're always right, just ask them. Posted by: E1999 at January 19, 2017 04:11 PM (wx6iv) 307

Posted by: antisocialist at January 19, 2017 04:03 PM (W2wn0) Ditto. I've never found Michelle to be terribly unattractive (though the ugliness inside couldn't help but show up on the outside), but her stylists NEVER did ANYTHING to highlight her attractive qualities. It's like she or they wanted her to be avant garde and haute couture, when her body type and facial structure just COULD NOT pull that off. She is not a model. She always looked best when dressing very simply without a lot of frou-frou. You can be elegant in a LBD with some simple jewelry. The problem with the Left in general is because everything they believe in is a lie, and they have to manufacture lies to keep the illusion that the lie is the truth. To admit to oneself that they are wrong about something is the hardest thing to do, but when it's your entire weltanschauung and not just that you stole the last cookie from the jar, that is something else entirely.
It Leftism is perpetual angry adolescence, when you boil it down to a psychology. Many people grow up; these people do not. And it's evil tyrant who exploit this anger for their purposes - Hitler, Stalin, Soros, Alinsky, etc, etc. We may have marginalized the institutional left for perhaps a generation if not longer. But because the human condition is what it is, they will return. And that means eternal vigilance. Posted by: J.J. Sefton at January 19, 2017 04:21 PM (mbhDw) 374

=============================== I wasn't aware that the Minority Leader got to make that call. Posted by: grammie winger at January 19, 2017 04:09 PM (bpfzP) The rules of the Senate allow for a lot of procedural delaying tactics, such as suggesting the absence of a quorum (which requires a full roll call), requiring that the Chair recognize the first senator who rises to speak, and allowing long speeches not necessarily germane to the question at hand. Since it's a short session on Friday, it will be fairly easy for the minority party to use a combination of these to "run out the clock" and thus, indirectly, control the number of nominees who get voted on in that session. While the filibuster is (mostly) gone, I don't think that blowing up the rest of the rules just to prevent some small-scale delays is really worth it, for either side. They lend a slower pace to the deliberations of the Senate and that is, in general, not a bad thing. Posted by: HTL at January 19, 2017 04:34 PM (nWypX) 493

The rules of the Senate allow for a lot of procedural delaying tactics,
such as suggesting the absence of a quorum (which requires a full roll call), requiring that the Chair recognize the first senator who rises to speak, and allowing long speeches not necessarily germane to the question at hand ------ What do the damn Germans have to do with any of it? I would pass easily for intellectual in most quarters based on educational pedigree and all that rot. That ignores my growing up in a working class town and having worked with folks on the manufacturing floor for fifteen years and thise two facts are why I am, if anything, anti-intellectual as the intellectuals would see it. As a good old boy in SC put it to me back in '81 when I started at a fibers manufacturing plant, "We know your background and respect it. If you'd prefer for us to refer to you as Dr. Krebs, we'll do that. We'd rather call you Krebs." "Call me Krebs." Gelernter is notable not only for being a computer genius and actual Yale professor but also for being severely injured by a bomb from the Unabomber.
I remember that attack; I was working at the time as a research associate for a psychiatrist whose office was one block away from Gelernter's laboratory. We heard police and ambulance sirens coming from what seemed to be every conceivable direction. My boss went out to see what was going on and one of the cops basically told her to go back inside for her own safety. When we found out what had happened, we just sat there in disbelief. A couple days later, someone in the medical school suggested that the Unabomber might have sent his bomb to the "wrong" Gelernter; David has a brother who is an MD, and whose research was the kind of thing the Unabomber detested.
