Saint Francis In Meditation
Francisco de Zurbarán

I saw this painting over the weekend, and the photo above is a pale reflection of it. My first thought was that it was an El Greco, because it seemed to glow with an inner light, like View Of Toledo.

11 I wonder how it would change our outlook on life if we daily contemplated a human skull to remind us of our mortality. I know it was intended to have some kind of positive effect but I'm sure it would only make me really depressed.

I do have a realistic fake skull for drawing practice though and it doesn't bother me at all having it around.

56 Dammit, willowed again, so I'm reposting this here from the previous thread:

Given the level of Russian hacking rampant in the country, I would think the Never Trump security experts would have plenty of job opportunities. What am I missing here?

Posted by: Ripley at January 17, 2017 08:14 AM (1BQGO)

You would think so. I agree with that article posted upthread; the sad simple fact is that no one has produced ANY concrete evidence that the Russians had anything to do with the leaks of Podesta's and the DNC's emails.

Is there hacking being attempted out there? Most people have no clue. Example; the other day Mrs. Oort reports she is having Internet access problems and wants me to reboot the router. Before doing any such thing, I was going to check the router's system log to see if there had been, in fact, any actual communications problems.

I log into the router, pull up the log, and while I found no signs of comm dropouts, what I did see was page after page of "intrusion" attempts into my router from the Internet, which the router was apparently able to block.

Out of curiosity I checked the source IP addresses of these intrusion attempts. Russia? Oh, yes. Also China, Taiwan, the Seychelles, India, Pakistan, Bolivia, Nigeria, Poland. Literally from all over the world. But truth be known, this is nothing new. I'd seen this sort of thing many times over the years. It is "the nature of the beast" where the Internet is concerned, and always has been.

Indeed, this is why the Feds sold the Internet off 25 or so years ago, because they had discovered back in 1985 that it had been penetrated by the Soviets and their proxies. And there was really no way to fix it.

Sure, there are steps one can take to protect yourself, but the fact remains there are assholes all over the world constantly trying to break into your system/network to rip you off in one way or another. This is why data security is such a big business in IT these days, because everybody is tied into the Internet in some way now, and it is inherently insecure.

63 Obviously, I'm nervous about violence at the Inauguration. But short of violence, what I worry about is verbal disruption. They can't stop Trump from being president, but they'll try to piss all over his moment.

I can see these protestor aholes treating the ceremony like it's a Milo talk - screaming, booing, and chanting their stupid catchphrases thoughout the swearing in. And then I can see the Trump supporters answering back by chanting USA or Trump with the voices of the speakers drowned out. And I can see Barry sitting back with a smug little smile on his face: "Didn't happen to me - because The People loved me!"

The problem is we don't know the proportion of leftist asshats to patriotic Americans who will be in attendance.

I think it's kind of awesome really that this picture shows the saint in earnest inquiring conversation with God. God wants us to talk to him any way we feel led. He can handle our arguing and complaining and bargaining. We can bring all our feelings to him without the negative effect that often results from taking those feelings to other people instead.

I like to watch Hindi movies and it's kind of cute- they scold their gods when they don't like what happens to them. The gods always turn out to be right in the end though just like the real God.

174 CBD, thanks for another interesting artist. I wonder if Francisco de Zurbaran was influenced more by the low country artists than El Greco. There is a greater realism than El Greco although the use of light is similar. But the flesh tones Zurbaran achieves is more lifelike and serves as focal points in his works, putting the viewer's attention on the figures, presumably where he wants it. It's a wonderful skill.

The one still life of Zurbaran's I saw also reminded me strongly of the low country paintings in its realism and technical skill. But it lacks the lush, profuse arrangements common in the Dutch paintings. It is a strong distinction and makes me wonder if there is a symbolic purpose in his simpler, tripartite arrangement.

Damn! Making these comparisons is fun. (Yeah, I know I'm strange. Oh well.)

183 Quite a few pictures and statutes of St. Francis with a skull.

Apparently a reference to his "canticle of the sun". There is a line in it in which he praises God for Sister Death for he sees in death the vehicle that takes us to the fullness of God. (Assuming of course you did live the right way).

Check me if I am wrong, but he is also the first known person to exhibit the stimata. He is often portrayed in popular times as a kind of hippy dippy happy go lucky friend of nature saint. He was a pretty neat guy, singer, joyful, spoke to animals, but he was definitely intensely devout.

184 He did another St.Francis, this one on his knees praying, that was used on the paperback cover of the first Matthew Shrardlake mystery, "Dissolution". Very striking.

186 thanks for the wonderful painting of a greatly misunderstood Doctor of the Church. St. Francis was devout to an extreme degree, had no possessions, and embraced God in all living things. It's interesting to see how many ways painters interpreted his meditations and, at certain blessed times, his ecstacy at a direct communion with God. There's a painting of him in the Met in NYC by Barocci that pictures, for me anyway, man in complete communication with God in a moment of receiving Divine insight.
