The 18th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, prohibiting the “manufacture, sale, or transportation of intoxicating liquors for beverage purposes,” is ratified on this day in 1919 and becomes the law of the land. The movement for the prohibition of alcohol began in the early 19th century, when Americans concerned about the adverse effects of drinking began forming temperance societies. By the late 19th century, these groups had become a powerful political force, campaigning on the state level and calling for total national abstinence. In December 1917, the 18th Amendment, also known as the Prohibition Amendment, was passed by Congress and sent to the states for ratification. American SJW, a thorn in the sides of a British small business owner. Cultural appropriation.“Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery that mediocrity can pay to greatness.” . American social justice warriors have launched a cyberbullying campaign against British small business owners who dreadlock the hair of white people, accusing them of cultural appropriation. The Hastings and St. Leonards Observer reported Tuesday that about 2,000 people had targeted Dreads UK, a Hastings business owned by a 33-year-old, formerly homeless entrepreneur. If you can appropriate dreadlocks, can you culturally appropriate a sammich? If your answer was YES, you win an all-paid &&&&&&& trip out of the barrel. Don't they ever tire of thinking of shit that offends them? On one hand they preach diversity on the other hand they don't. Benjamin Franklin said there were only two things certain in life: death and taxes. Actually he was wrong. Tenure for life is a certain thing. The State of Iowa is looking to take that away. “I think the university should have the flexibility to hire and fire professors and then I don’t think that bad professors should have a lifetime position guaranteed at colleges,” Iowa State Senator Brad Zaun told the Des Moines Register. “It is as simple as that.” Man's best friend. A Golden Retriever named Kelsey just saved his owner’s life after he slipped and fell, breaking his neck on New Year’s Eve. “I was screaming for help but my nearest neighbor is about a quarter mile away and it was 10:30 p.m., but my Kelsey came,” stated dog’s owner Bob. “By morning my voice was gone and I couldn’t yell for help, but Kelsey didn’t stop barking.” The Obama administration continues to poke the eye of the American public. The EPA continues with their totalitarian ways. Environmental Protection Agency administrator Gina McCarthy has decided to maintain current emissions and fuel economy standards through 2025, cementing a central pillar of the Obama administration’s green legacy. Many automakers have been critical of Obama’s rather strict climate policies and were hopeful that President-elect Donald Trump might roll back some of the more stringent regulations. Of the policies, none is more controversial than the corporate average fuel economy (CAFE) mandate, which began a midterm review earlier this year. While the EPA’s ultimate determination wasn’t due until April of 2018, choosing not to alter 2025 vehicle emission and CAFE rules effectively locks in the standard before Trump can take office.h/t phreshone The latest from Shoe0Head. According to the Associated Press, Berlin (AP), “A German opposition lawmaker’s suggestion that authorities could subsidize paid sex for patients who require nursing care has drawn critical reception. Elisabeth Scharfenberg, the opposition Greens spokeswoman on care policy, told the Welt am Sonntag newspaper she could imagine authorities “financing sexual assistance.” The newspaper said the idea is based on a system in the Netherlands, under which applicants must prove a medical need and show that they can’t otherwise pay for a sex worker. Lawmaker Karl Lauterbach of the governing Social Democrats told Monday’s Bild daily that “we don’t need paid prostitution in homes for the elderly, and certainly not on prescription.” The German Patient Protection Foundation said people who have to fight for help on basic matters such as washing and eating have other concerns.”Once a sleaze ball always a sleaze ball. Very hard to believe any determination by EPA cannot be altered starting in 6 days.
If so, then Congress needs to act on an administration request to do what's needed (though, again, I am unaware of any executive branch action apart from pardons that are not reversible by the executive branch). I'm sure Trump and his team are looking at this real carefully, but my guess is that the best strategy is to front-load - put Congress, the GOP, and vulnerable Dems on the hottest possible spots (all of them) ASAP. Flood the zone. GOP senators and Ryan are probably Trump's only important obstacles. Need to make them show their cards immediately. Posted by: rhomboid at January 15, 2017 10:00 PM (QDnY+) 59

The people who did that probably scored more funding for the state EPA, because of the obvious dire need. Or would have, if not for the glorious God-Emporor handing out pink slips the way Oprah gives away Camrys. The way government effectively rewards public works for going over schedule and over budget? That can be taken to the next level where the EPA sees a mustard yellow river full of arsenic and heavy metals, and sees a windfall and years of security. Elimination of the entire CAFE concept and legislative basis would be an outstanding move.
I know, it sounds absolutely crazy - but in response to existing/anticipated variable costs (e.g., gasoline), buyers gasoline-consuming machinery will .... make their own rational decisions based on their own circumstances. In turn, in response to national and global demand patterns, manufacturers of gasoline-consuming machinery will ..... make their own rational decisions based on their own circumstances. Remember: what you just read would baffle, and infuriate, a large % of Americans, and a large % of elected officials (both parties). Stay guardedly pessimistic, my friends. I read (Instapundit?) about someone using a microwave emitter to frack rather than water and sand. They were testing it and if it worked, lower cost.
Posted by: JB1000 at January 15, 2017 10:44 PM (IuBrk) The microwave tool is designed to free hydrocarbons from oil shale by in situ thermal cracking. Fracking releases gas or liquid hydrocarbons from low-permeability reservoir rocks, which can shale, or siltstone, or simply tight sandstone. Shale oil =/= oil shale. The former is conventional crude produced from the above described tight formations. The latter is shale with a large proportion of kerogen, a solid hydrocarbon more like wax or plastic. Under a microscope, it looks like tiny brown flakes. Appluenough heat to, and the long-chain hydrocarbons break down, and gas and liquid hydrocarbons are released, and some coke remains. Not unlike the pyrolysis of coal or wood. Posted by: Alberta Oil Peon at January 15, 2017 11:17 PM (bG+ug) 299

A short story:
My vet does adoptions-- separate from the vet service-- and I noticed the majority of their animals didn't have any description written up on Petfinder. So I contacted them, and said, "I'll do it for you." And indeed I spend one afternoon there with the cats and wrote up some wonderful descriptions. The week of Christmas. Fast forward to today. I checked Petfinder. They used NONE of my writeups at all, and instead concentrated on the age of the animal and where they got the animal from. That's it. I spend time with the cats, tried to figure out their personality, researching effective adoption notices and... wasted my time. Sigh. Never. Volunteer. Further messing with the computer that I was messing with last night suggests to me that there might be something wrong with the motherboard. The BIOS cannot auto-detect any drive connected to the primary channel. It can detect and read drives connected to the secondary channel, but it chokes if two drives are connected.
It will load and boot a Mini-XP into the ram drive off a copy of Hiren's Boot Disk loaded in the DVD drive on the secondary channel. I am going to set it aside, and mess with another one. Posted by: Alberta Oil Peon at January 15, 2017 11:41 PM (bG+ug) 388

The microwave tool is designed to free hydrocarbons from oil shale by in situ thermal cracking.
Aetius. Depends on the kind of sinus issue. I use a neil-med sinus bottle as a routine sinus issue preventative. But when I had a bad infection with intermittent pressure headaches that would not clear up and was referred to an allergist some years ago he told me that sometime the saline rinsing can cause an infection when the saline is trapped by swollen sinus tissues and leaves a nice moist spot for bacteria to breed.
Sudafed original and plenty of NSAIDs plus the hot/cold over the sinus cavities is the only thing that helps when I have an infection causing me headaches. Posted by: PaleRider at January 16, 2017 12:11 AM (Jen0I) 466

Sudafed original and plenty of NSAIDs plus the hot/cold over the sinus cavities is the only thing that helps when I have an infection causing me headaches.
--- I don't like taking antibiotics {yes, I am crazy} But I do get sinus infections. My home remedy includes various allergy D formulas + echinacea. But research echinacea and make sure you can take it. And only use for one week. Between those two things and the occasional Aleve, I will get myself out of it without a doctors visit. Shibumi, I have a system that helps me prevent infections most years but if I get one it is always a pocket of infection with intense pressure like a hoof abscess on a horse (not 24hrs/day thank god) and it takes antibiotics to clear it up. Anyway, I fired up the NEC computer, that was below it on the list. It boots Win 98 OK, but I don't think it's got the horsepower to run anything bigger. Pentium 233, with 64 meg memory. I stuck my Kubuntu CD in the drive, and got the welcome screen, but it said it could not boot Kubuntu because of a lack of resources. The 18th Amendment is a bright day in Constitutional history. It illuminates the original meaning of the Commerce Clause, and shows us that the Supreme Court's modern interpretation of the Commerce Clause is wrong.
If the Commerce Clause gives the Federal government power to regulate all commerce, including commerce that does not actually cross state lines, then the 18th Amendment was superfluous. The Volstead Act that implemented Prohibition could have been passed without it. Instead, everyone recognized that the Constitution did not give the Federal Government that power, and an amendment was necessary. Just 18 years later, the Supreme Court started ruling that the Commerce Clause gave the Federal government power to regulate intrastate as well as interstate commerce. The 18th Amendment shows us what the original meaning of the Constitution was, and that the Supreme Court changed that meaning (in response to FDR's threats to "pack" the Court and overturn the original meaning). In my family I always went to my Aunt Mary -- powerful she was. She always asked me, What is your friend/person's name and I would tell her and then she would say the name and come forth with a wonderful prayer. Well, enough messing with obsolete computers. The known good HD from the NEC box failed to boot when connected to the Asus MB in the other box. On "primary" the BIOS could not even see it, on "secondary" the BIOS could see and recognize the HD, but it would not boot.
I found yet another old MB, and installed that in the box, only to find it needed a video card, no on-board video, and I had no compatible video cards. So the HD with the working copy of Win 98SE will go back into the NEC box, because at least that entity is a working computer. Posted by: Alberta Oil Peon at January 16, 2017 02:09 AM (bG+ug) 646

I will keep the little NEC box, because it does boot and run Win 98 SE, so it could be a useful computer, for some values of "useful". Like I could use it to listen to streaming radio on the Internet, I suppose. And I will keep my old IBM PS/1, which runs Win 3.11, because it was my first computer, so sentimental attachment.
