Federal Employees Brace for Possible Draining of the Swamp

Everything must go.

Trump, who ran on a promise to "drain the swamp," has identified hiring freezes at most federal agencies as a top priority for his early days in office. Republican lawmakers, many of whom have long advocated for reducing Washington's workforce, are looking to cut benefits and make it easier to fire poor performers.

The threats and preliminary steps taken by Congress have created anxiety for many of the government's 2.1 million employees.

"People don't know what to believe, and they're in a state of uneasiness," said Witold Skwierczynski, a Catonsville, Md., who heads the American Federation of Government Employees council that oversees Social Security Administration field offices. "That's the feeling I hear. People are unsettled."

Wow. Federal employees have an "unsettled" feeling about not knowing if they'll still be employed in their jobs in the coming couple of years.

I'm sure no private sector workers know what that feeling is like.

19 If people would call government employment what it is, a works program, it would be much more palatable. Instead they call it silly things like "public service", which is just bull. It is mainly a safety net for the largely unemployable. There are some exceptions, but those exceptions could find work elsewhere.

This. Let the unions collect their own dues and the states that have them deal with pensions and bennies separate from federal monies.

"Fans, for the past eight years you have been reading about the bad break I got. Yet today I consider myself the duckiest trans on the face of this earth. I have been in-the-closet for twenty years and have never received anything but fawning and Nobel Prizes from you fans.

"Look at these grand mirrors. Which of you wouldn't consider it the highlight of his career just to gaze upon them for even one day? Sure, I'm ducky. Who wouldn't consider it an honor to have blown Jeremiah Wright? Also, the builder of Europe's greatest empire, Abu Soulayman? To have spent six years swallowing the wonderful little fellow, Saul Alinksy? Then to have spent the next thirty years on the down low with that smart student of Taqiyya, the best lobbyist for Iran today, Valerie Jarrett? Sure, I'm ducky.

"When the Kennebunkport Bushes, a team you would give your right tit to face, and vice versa, sends you a Romney -- that's something. When everybody down to the body men and those boys in puberty remember you with herpes -- that's something. When you have a wonderful mother-in-law who lives in the White House with you at taxpayer expense -- that's something. When you have a name-donor and a mother who failed to abort so you can have free education and build no transcripts -- it's a blessing. When you have a beard who has been a tower of fashion and shown more love-of-country than you dreamed existed -- that's the finest I know.

"So I close in saying that I might have been given a bad break, but selfies are an awful lot to live for."

146 I have been screaming about this issue for a while - might as well scream again.

Can someone explain to me why, for f*ck's sake, the Federal Government has continued to hire people from the height of the crash back in 2007-2008 until today? When the private sector was laying off scores and scores and businesses were closing why the Fed felt the need to hire ANYONE?

As far as I am concerned the Fed should only be allowed to hire when the private sector is above a certain amount in in new, full time unemployment positions created in the new jobs report, and unemployment is under a certain amount AND private sector salaries are on the increase over a certain percentage. Secondly the Fed's employees' pay should be tied to private sector pay as follows: Private sector pay goes up? Then fed employees are eligible for a possible raise of a modest percentage - if it goes down? Then Fed pay goes down in an EQUAL percentage. These f*ckers need to be taught that the private sector is MORE important, as is the individual, not their phony baloney jobs - which are sh*t - and they should be encouraged to leave them for better pastures in the private sector . . . constantly. Encouraging people to work in government and suggesting that this is some sort of noble calling is complete horse-hockey - this is one very easy way to shrink government.

Oh and people who use their government jobs to harass private citizens for no real reason - like the jerk offs who shut down lemonade stands for not having a permit, or make a barbecue festival throw out all the food it was going to give the poor because it had not been inspected - that sort of cr*p - If I am Trump - I appoint a person whose sole job is to scan the news for these A-holes and then make sure that they are stone cold fired (or shipped to north of the Arctic circle in Alaska where a special Quonset hut will be built, with desks in it, so they can do their jobs from there if they can't be fired for some reason) - if you have time to do that sh*t then you are obviously not busy enough - meaning your job is NOT NEEDED.

Now that might motivate our bureaucracy - but I will not hold my breath waiting for this to happen.

OK done screaming for now -

And Hillary Clinton will never be President of the United States.

*resets Hillary will never be POTUIS egg-timer - feels better*

Take the VA as an example. Under a hiring freeze, you will see the bloated administration and union gold-brickers protected while the need for more good docs goes unfilled.

As an emotional catharsis , a mass federal layoff would be awesome.

Right up to the part where they all apply for unemployment and eventually begin wandering the streets with shopping carts, huffing gsoline and paint thinner and spreading crime and TB.

The resultant crime wave would make modern Baltimore and DC look like a resort paradise.

Such as the ones at OPM who enabled the China "hack," the CO EPA personnel responsible for the Animus river mess, the IRS employees harassing Tea Party groups, the ones at the various VA hospitals fudging the numbers while grossly delaying care, etc.

Maybe - maybe - I would have more empathy for federal employees if they were competent in weeding out the bad apples.

Reducing the federal workforce is great. But whether or not that
happens, I'd like to see much of it relocated. There are a lot of

much government administration needs to be dedicated to making Maryland

217 The reason there are too many government employees is you, Moron. For example - Kate's Law was mentioned as being up for a vote. Conservatives are all 'hell yeah, pass that law'. You want illegal immigrant criminals deported. What the law gives is more government jobs.

Every bit of news that makes you whine, 'there should be a law' = a law = more government workers.

A couple's pitbull kills some adorable kid. The true conservative position is to convict the couple and force them to work hard in a prison. The what-actually-happens conservative position is to pass several laws, that necessitate a 5-person team per county to administer.

Audit the Fed = more government jobs. Drain the swamp = more government jobs. Build the wall = more government jobs.

The people who are actually competent -- yes there are some -- can still get jobs in the private sector, and will leave if/when better opportunities arise. What you'll be left with is the worst of the worst who cling to the only job they won't get fired from.

What's needed is civil service reform, so that managers can fire the incompetents.

245 The bloated federal government is at the root of much of the problems in the private sector, In order to even compete in the marketplace an entrepreneur has to weave through a maze of regulation that stops a cert-ant percentage, then there is the overwhelming heavy hand of regulation and taxation that stops even more. After all of the government push back then there is survival in a not so fair market because the government likes to pick winners a losers. How in world does a economy prosper in this situation? How does a worker let alone a business owner prosper when the fed leaches off the backs of the people?

Sure, you had a great time sending in armies of inspectors and enforcers from every 3 letter agency to harass Gibson Guitars or any Tea Party group trying to play by the rules; when you pile 60 page questionnaires on small private farms or businesses until they give up; when you threaten prison for possessing a single eagle feather while your other drones okay the mulching of thousand of eagles annually, and so forth.

How's about a little terror in your smug lives? It's just what the doctor ordered.

Under the process set up by the unions/civil service laws, and depending on the agency, it might take months, even years of process, a couple dozen meetings, and hundreds of man-hours of work to get someone fired, no matter how incompetent. Most managers find it easier just to work around the turds than fire him. By the time you can get them fired, you may well be transferred elsewhere anyway.

272 Audit the Fed = more government jobs. Drain the swamp = more government jobs. Build the wall = more government jobs.

Posted by: dustydog

Ahem - Dusty Dog - not sure we agree here. The White House auditing all branches of the Fed and getting rid of a bunch of employees - that is additional money for the auditor - but money well spent if it leads to jobs being cut on a massive scale.

Likewise - "draining the swamp"

The wall - ? I would put it to you that there are certain things that our government SHOULD be spending on, and a wall - which I find as part of the common defense ( See, Constitution, Preamble) is definitely one of them. I am not suggesting that the Fed should not have any jobs - just a lot, lot less.

Oh - and the "conservative response" to someone allowing their pit bull to bite someone is not to pass more laws - it IS to prosecute those persons ( if they deserve to be prosecuted) - reasonable policing is one of the jobs of government - prosecuting someone at a guitar factory for using the "wrong" kind of wood? eh - not so much.

And for someone above who advocated "civil service reform" and not a hiring freeze - because the "good people" go and the bad people end up staying - that proves my point - "good people" should not be wasting their time on cr*ppy government bureaucratic jobs - they should be innovating, creating new things, new companies, contributing to society. Oh - and the thought that government agencies would be, somehow, made "much worse" if the very few "good people" left because of a hiring freeze? I find that to be a very comical thought indeed.

And the person who posted the bit on Obama White House staffers unable to find jobs because of the current job market being cr*p - despite their former boss saying it has been just peachy" ? Thank you! Oh yes the Schadenboner is rising

"THE SCHADENBONER! IT RISES!".

273 With few exceptions, there's no sound rationale for providing local, state and federal bureaucrats with the extraordinary job security they enjoy. It's one thing for a professor to earn tenure at a public university by jumping through all the requisite hoops. It's another thing altogether to reward bureaucratic incompetence and malfeasance with virtually lifetime employment. In some case, these people have committed felonies in the course discharging their official responsibilities and remain on public payrolls.

These federal fukcs are lucky we're not the ruthless capitalists the chinese commies are:

Chinese telecom equipment maker ZTE (undefined), which is facing U.S. trade sanctions that could severely disrupt its supply chain, is slashing about 3,000 jobs, including a fifth of positions in its struggling handset business in China, company sources said.

The sources said the Shenzhen-based company, one of the world's biggest telecoms gear makers, is axing about 5 percent of its 60,000 global workforce.

Its global handset operations will shed 600 jobs, or 10 percent of the total, with the cuts concentrated in China, where it has been losing market share.

"Cuts in the handset business in China will be beyond 20 percent," said a senior executive who has been briefed on the lay-offs, which are scheduled to be completed within the first quarter.

A local manager in one of the company's overseas branches said a 10 percent quota was given to shed staff in his department by the end of January.

"I was also given names that must go because they had tried to apply for jobs at (rival) Huawei [HWT.UL] and are therefore branded as 'unstable factors'," said the manager, who is not in the handset unit and asked not to be identified.

The company declined to comment.

279 I have some experience working in the "Civil Cervix" (womb like and comforting to some, stifling and confining to others).

What happens to these bureaucracies is that they become self perpetuating, hiring more and more staffs so they can perpetuate themselves.

A hiring freeze, held firmly for years, is a good first step, so that the bureaucracy can wear away by attrition.

I know this may rub many people the wrong way in that people will be paid to do nothing, but suppose there is an utterly crappy government program that should be abolished once and for all. What to do? Offer all the people working at it a "Go Quietly Or Else" deal: they can go home and continue to collect their pay checks, so long as they do not obstruct abolition of the crappy government program. We would still save money by shutting down the apparatus, liquidating the building and its equipments, and stopping all the trouble it causes.

I was hired a couple years ago. Had been a contractor in another training department before that, going back to the emd of my last enlistment. I was actually an emergency hire despite the freeze at the time. But enough of the Vietnam era guys took the retirements offered that there weren't enough people left to support, maintain, and operate 72 assorted firing ranges and training facilities on 127,000 acres.

There are 68 of us and 30,000 troops.

Push these programs out of the Federal government into the States, eliminating them from the Federal Register, and stop collecting Federal taxes for them. And tell these DC employees to "follow the money".
