Wednesday Night ONT: Up All Night Edition

Good evening, and welcome to tonight's ONT. How goes things with all of the fine 'Ettes and 'Rons of the horde (for the Horde!)? How shall we start? I know, how about a dose of Florida Man?

Florida.jpg

Look around you. See those Morons who are nodding sagely? Stay away from those people at parties.

Troll Level: Master Griller

Before we get to that, for the first time we have a runner up for troll of the week:

INSTEAD OF EXPELLING AMERICANS PUTIN INVITES THEM AND THEIR KIDS TO A PARTY

I have no love for Putin, he's a dangerous, evil dictator, but the way he casually bats around the incompetent in the White House is something to behold. Cats with mice look at him and say “Damn!”

And the winner is: Wendy's!

Wendys.jpg
Wendys2.jpg

Tweeter Thuggy-D was so humiliated by the response that he deleted his account (other examples of Wendy's tweets at the link). Whoever is running the Wendy's social media account deserves a raise. Just enough bite to be amusing, not enough to be really offensive. People are tired of bland corporate pap, this is a nice change.

Racism

Excellent Op-Ed by a lady who lives in the West Bank. You are the racist, actually, not me

When I am castigated for supporting the annexation of land that some of you wrongfully identify as “occupied” (it’s disputed, not occupied, based on International Law; look it up.), you are telling me that Palestinians, whose current situation is far far less than ideal and is causing anger and sadness and needs improvement, all want to live under an oppressive, dictatorial, thug-like regime that embezzles, doesn’t provide girls with proper education, trains in hate, and has no democracy, because it is comprised of Palestinians. (Picking leaders by ethnicity? How racist of you!)
You are telling me that “they” desire this over living in 100% freedom and democracy in a “Jewish” state that has Arab/Muslim religious rights, education, healthcare, and the ability to make change legally and effectively through serving in the government. And if you aren’t telling me what they want, you are telling me that you know that this is what is best for them. That this is the best alternative of those that are out there waiting for them. It is most definitely the alternative that John Kerry just laid out.
You are telling me what they want, what they prefer…. Or at least that you know, sitting over there in Massachusetts and California (and Herzliya) what they SHOULD want. What’s best for them. You are taking your Western ideals and assumptions and choices and imposing them on people here without a true understanding of peoplehood, of the history. You are swallowing political rhetoric about a group of people – about them, and about me. And that is your prejudice — your racism.

There's more, you should read it all, particularly in light of the news that the GOP is considering getting squishy on standing up for Israel. Again.

A Smart Military Blog

50 years ago Monday, Operation Bolo took place in Vietnam. Concerned about mounting bomber losses, Colonel Robin Olds conceived a plan where F-4s would fly the mission profile of F-105 fighter-bombers and ambush the MIGs when they came up to attack the Thunderchiefs. It was a rousing success.

Speaking of shooting down enemy aircraft, here's the story of a US pilot who shot down a Japanese Zero.

A bomber pilot.
After hitting the silk.
With a pistol.

You know what that takes? That takes brass balls.

And finally, Air Force cadets stunned to learn that the janitor at their barracks won the Medal of Honor. Lots of good leadership lessons to be found. More on the story of Bill Crawford here. I am humbled to be a citizen of a country that produces men like this. (H/t @DMC_72)

Good News

Daniel Hannan writes of The glad tidings we refuse to believe. And he's right. We as humans focus on the negatives, but as CATO reminds us, a new year is the perfect Time to Celebrate Human Progress.

From anger to forgiveness: How one man's shooting led to a new program for Baltimore boys

The bullet that ripped a hole in Damion Cooper's chest left him bitter and angry. He spent more than four years raging against society. He questioned his faith in God.
The last thing he wanted to think about was forgiveness.
Fourteen years later, Cooper runs a well-regarded program that teaches young boys to do what he once could not.

The message was from the Book of Psalms: "For his anger endures but a moment; in his favor is life: weeping may endure for a night, but joy comes in the morning."
Cooper decided that verse was meant for him.
"I knew I had to let that pain go," he says. "If I didn't, it was going to just damage me."
Cooper went back to Coppin State and earned his degree. Then he enrolled in a master's degree program at United Baptist College and Seminary. He began volunteering as a mentor inside the Baltimore jail complex.
It was there, Cooper said, that he learned the depths of forgiveness.
Over a year and a half, Cooper worked closely with one of the inmates — and memories began to come back. He had recurring dreams about his shooting.
Before, his nightmares had focused on the gun, the spark and the bullet. But with each passing dream, the teen shooter's face came into greater focus.
One morning Cooper awoke. He was now certain.
"I realized this is the guy who shot me."
The next day, Cooper asked to meet with the young inmate.

It has become a truism that when the Left talk about "discrimination", why they are really referring to is a lack of legal privilege, and similarly when they talk about "rights", they refer not to fundamental (AKA "negative"), rights, but of "positive" rights which are state mandate compulsion pushed on others.

93 That taco id story reminds me of the time when I was younger and the wife wanted to go to a new club in Myrtle Beach. So we go. When we get there the red head goes bouncing in and the door man stops me and tells me I have to wear a tie. I'm thinking a tie in Myrtle Beach that was unheard of . Of course it will be a while before the red head even realizes I am not behind her. I think maybe I left one of my ties in the convertible. Of course there is nothing in the back seat so I check the trunk. No tie. But I see the jumper cables and figure it's worth a try so I wrap them around my neck and march back to the entrance and the door man stops me. I then plead with him explaining my situation and course the wife is no where to be seen. The guy finally takes pity on me and says I can go in, but I have to promise him one thing. I say ok anything what is it. He eyes me sternly eying those cables around my neck and says you must promise me if I let you in you won't start anything in there .

I've never had Carl's Jr./Hardees or Jack in the Box, but I have plenty of experience with Chick-fil-A and McDonald's breakfasts.

Although I mostly eat at Chick-fil-A nowadays, I have to give a narrow edge to McDonald's. Their Sausage McMuffin is better than the CFA equivalent.

McD has a Steak, Egg, & Cheese Bagel, while CFA has a Chicken Bagel. Two different meals to be sure, but what CFA calls a "bagel" is not like anything I'd call a bagel. McD wins hands down on that one.

CFA has both chicken and sausage burritos which are very nice indeed.

Of course, CFA easily wins for the polite service and the peace of mind that there's less likelihood that the employees are doing anything untoward to the food behind my back.

As a point of interest, it's not inconceivable. I myself am the grandson of a man who was born in 1857. He fathered my mother when he was 60, she birthed me when she was in her late 20s and I am presently 76. That spans 160 years in just two generations. As I plan to live to be 90+, that will add at least another decade and a half.

I still have that one - the Key of Marinus? It's on VHS so maybe it's gone bad by now.

The quality of the William Hartnell episodes was really awful and grainy. But in a way that added to the mystery and otherworldliness.

I wonder how Ian and Barbara would have reacted to know that their country would admit people who would behead them in the streets. They probably would have stayed in the TARDIS instead of disembarking at the end of the series.

250 #221: Incidentally, this is a very good reason to dismiss all those claims that Putin "hacked the election" to get his "puppet" Donald Trump elected.

Putin can get anything he wants from Hillary Clinton by throwing a few million dollars at the Clinton Foundation. As Secretary of State, Hillary allowed Putin to buy up half of our domestic uranium production, because he ponied up the cash to gain her favor. Why would Putin be so gung-ho about getting Trump elected over her, in that case?

If Putin does have a preference for Trump over Hillary, it can only be because he respects Trump as a person and likes the idea of going toe-to-toe in competition with a rival nationalist.

Putin has said that the collapse of the USSR was a geopolitical disaster for Russia. I think if he thought he could retake that territory without too much cost, he would do do.

The variable is what the costs would be. Would anyone in Western Europe do anything if the USA was not there to lead? They have all reduced their militaries drastically, and I don't think any of them have the heart for war unless they think that Putin would roll over them next.

294 >>Good point. Makes a whole lot more sense than the Left's weird idea that because he has extensive experience dealing with the Russians, he must be some sort of pushover, like, oh, can't think of an example of someone that Putin pushes around like Mr Bill.

The media still can't come to grips with what Trump is and what he isn't. He isn't a politician and never will be. He is a private sector deal maker extraordinaire and whether you like his style or not it's pretty obvious with everything he does that he is positioning for the deal he wants.

Putin, much like Trump himself, has a healthy ego. So why not play to that while putting a guy in place as your chief negotiator a guy who has been making mutually beneficial deals, without the benefit of a military, for years? Does anyone at the CIA or any branch of our military know Putin better than Tillerson? Doubt it. And if Putin thinks Trump respects him he is much more likely to do a deal than with some lying scrunt with a mistranslated Reset button.

Trump is running a private sector playbook while the media keeps trying to piss on him for not following the usual political process. It's kind of comical to watch.

Oh, I agree. We do not want to be unnecessarily provocative towards Russia. But, we don't need to bend over, either.

We have been meddling in the politics of countries that have traditionally been considered to be within Russia's sphere of influence, and that is provocative. On the other hand, Russia has been grabbing bits of its neighbors, which we should want to discourage.

No, I don't think they will try to rebuild the USSR or bring back the Warsaw Pact. But, a big part of why they won't try to do that is that they know that the US wouldn't just watch it happen. So, as Reagan said, peace through strength.

It always freaked me out a bit that my grandfather was born 5 years after the end of the Civil War - but if you have a few generations of late-marrying men that's what happens.

328 Turkestan is a kind of archaic historical name like Silesia or Wallachia. It is roughly the old Central Asian republics of the USSR, parts of Sinkiang in China (which is why it is sometimes referred to as East Turkestan, a term the Chicoms do not like), and northern Afghanistan.

I sort of feel like an asshole saying, "Hey, can I get hash browns instead of pancakes, please?" I know it's a real pain for the cooks. They set the menu up for maximum efficiency, and I'm sort of throwing a wrench in the works.

Last time I went there for the steak and eggs, I got my hash browns, but I also got a plate of pancakes that I didn't want. The waitress sort of played it off like I was getting a bonus, but I really had zero desire for those pancakes. I wish she'd thrown them out rather than bring them to me. I left them untouched.

I still tipped her really well, as I always do at restaurants. I really didn't want those pancakes, but she obviously thought it'd a nice bonus, so I wasn't gonna penalize her for trying to look out for me like that.

Haven't had so much fun since I lived overseas, and I don't think I have shat so much yellow since I was weaned.

I spent New Years day drinking pedialite, aspirin and eating yogurt, so the dehydration was not the problem this time. ( no real change from the traditional New Year's day-after I suppose.)

Four hours with a very capable mechanic today, as I had to replace the intake manifold butterfly plenum actuator motor (P-1581 OBDII code), on a 4.2 L, V-6 Ford engine in my 2000 F-150.

Damn thing is bolted to the back of the intake manifold, between it and the firewall.

Gotta pull the entire intake plenum, ignition coil pack, fuel rails, just to get to the damn thing, and even with that access, it takes a triple jointed orangutan to work hands and tools into that not-enough-space-to-fit-a-Whitworth-spanner.

AND, you've also gotta hold yer tounge JUST RIGHT, to get it to work!

Got it done, cleaning old fouling and varnish from the systems as it went.

Truck runs smooth now, no code. And I'll get my gas mileage back, too.

Not a repair I'll ever hope to have to make again.

375 Expanding NATO eastward should have been done early and all at once. Present the Russians with a fait accompli while they couldn't prevent it. But the slow drip-drip while our military gets weaker and theirs recovers provides too much temptation.

Also, give them an out. No way should Belarus or Ukraine be in NATO. Sign bilateral treaties with them, maybe negotiate with the Russians to demilitarize the borders, but know when to stop. If you look at a map you see there's no barriers between any invader and Moscow except the Arctic Ocean, the Urals, the Baltic, the Black Sea, and the Alps. Russia wants to push its borders as far out as possible.

Over the Christmas holidays I was with a bunch of them and every time I heard the Trump is a racist thing I asked for evidence. It really is amazing how otherwise smart and capable people can become absolute fucking drooling idiots and sheep when it comes to politics. 406 I bought 2 My Pillows about 6 months ago and I'm satisfied with them. I wasn't expecting them to cure all my ills (your mattress is more important than your pillows) - I wanted pillows I could fluff back up into shape easily and throw in the washing machine. They're fine for that and comfortable and no, I don't think they smell of chemicals or all the other things they were bitching about at Hot Air.

I'm a side sleeper and use 2 pillows. If you're a back or side sleeper you might be fine with My Pillows. My sister doesn't like hers much but she's a stomach sleeper, so she barely needs a pillow at all. It's too fluffy for her - she doesn't want her head elevated that much.

My understanding is that the impediments to her receiving funding have been removed. That said, their accounting staff just returned to work yesterday and I personally witnessed the amazing pile of shit mail on their receptionist's desk when I went up there.

Having run numerous accounting departments myself, I have no doubt they'll be looking to round up as much transactional crap as possible and blow it out to give them room to work on year-end. So, yes, I think they'll be doing a good-faith effort to move SMFH's funds to her....but they'll probably be opening all that mail first and trying to move that stuff as well.

Well, maybe. I know the ECM uses the absence of oil pressure as a condition to shut off the fuel pump; that's a safety consideration. But that is supposed to be over-ridden when cranking.

You know, for several hours last night, prior to the initial fail-to-start, I was smelling a hint of scorched Bakelite. But I had the heater on full blast, and thought that might account for it; and there were no adverse indications from the gauges. I wonder if there is a diode to feed juice to the fuel pump from the crank terminal on the ignition switch, and maybe that burned out?

And wtf is it with chicks and their needing sixteen pillows "artfully" arrayed on the entire upper 1/3 of the bed and halfway up the headboard?

But then, I consider a folding canvas Army cot to be a perfectly acceptable sleeping place. Or a thick Persian rug on the floor.

LOL. That one is pretty excellent as well.

True story:

A number of years ago, I was at a small corporate presentation. There were only a handful of journalist types there, and I was a "writer" there, not an "editor."

At one point, the corporate speaker states, "You all know our firm."

There is a brief silence, and I casually say "well, not biblically."

Everyone turns and stares at me with the "who is this unimportant person we do not know who has said something witty that we didn't?"

Then they chuckled.

We have 6 pillows on the bed, 3 each. I like to sleep on minimum pillow, so two of mine get smushed down between the mattress and headboard.

My wife, on the other hand, makes pillow forts in her sleep. She'll sleep on one, but she always arranges the other two between us like a barrier.

I try not to take it personally.

I am researching pillow catapults, however. I'll let you know how it goes.

Thanks, Kindltot. I'm able to sleep for four hours before waking up, and then I can go back to sleep. For the first year and a half after he died, I slept on the living room couch for four, five hours tops. As you can imagine, that resulted in a lot of mental dullness and an unstable affect.

And of course, the TV is on throughout the night. I know that's bad, but it's a comfort. I miss Mr. D's snoring. It's too quiet without the TV.

I had to begin studying Cluster B personality types 5 years ago, of which psychopaths are one of those types, for survival (a marriage counselor strongly suggested I should). It is disturbing how many and how well these people blend in, exist, and have a knack for knowing each other and covering up for each other without speaking. 538 When It comes to security, my thoughts have always been is to never put any data on your computer that you don't want anyone else to have and then hook into the net.

Do not pay bills online or make any transactions with your financial data, Credit Cards, Bank Accounts, etc.
Sooner or later that stuff will be stolen.

Bet on it.

Use only throw away gift or pre paid debit cards or paypal and never keep more in your paypal than you are willing to lose.

My use of a VPN is mainly on the Admin side and then only rarely. With those, make sure you are not groggy when you use them.

Best advice I can give.

Cooth, things really started acting bizzare around August with Brietbart and the security certificates being out of date. Since the election, this has spread to almost every right leaning website I visit. When I type in https on my phone, the sites don't load.

So I agree with you and Drudge has been hinting at such for a long time with his selection of articles.

Anyway glad you and your wisdom are back. Be Well. I'm gong to try and get some sleep.

540 533 True Fact: Slaves came up with the design for the chassis used in the GM Top Kick truck series from which the Presidential limousine is derived. Mooch not only lives in a house that slaves built, but she also rides in a vehicle that slaves spec'd out.

Posted by: cthulhu at January 05, 2017 03:49 AM (EzgxV)

576 About this story of this 14 year "white" harassing a 16 year old "black". This allegedly has been happening over a period of months. A continuing effort so to speak.

My experiences in this department mostly stems from my service in the Army which I think is more than a microcosm of society on the whole. The racial make up of every unit I served in was probably around w/b/h 60/30/10.

Problems are going to occur between Soldiers of different races. I'm going to say that most of the problems were never racial. They were personal.

The racial part came after all other ways of hurting the target had been used up. The racial BS was used as just another means to attack a personal target.

This kid, the 14 year old, doesn't need any more sensitivity training other than a few fists to the jaw to straighten his stupid ass out. All the talk in the world isn't going to do a damn thing for him.

Just my opinion, I presume not to think for anyone else, and in parting may I say how much I am coming to hate the thought of identifying any of my fellow Humans by the tone of their skin.

Trump says the intelligence agencies have been politicized by the democrats, and the whining leftists who purged conservatives for their political views are facing the same treatment and don't like it thus confirming Trump's view that those agencies have been politicized. I hope Trump burns Washington to the effin ground and starts over with new people.

From the sidebar:

Lately I've Been Listening to Pink Floyd's "The Wall" Edge-to-Edge and Let Me Tell You, Damn, It Holds Up

That album came out when I was 14, and at that time I thought it was the greatest thing ever. Nowadays, I find it to be relentlessly depressing, overblown, pretentious and a slog to sit through.

But, an outstanding single album of 44 minutes or so could have been constructed from the good stuff.

ANIMALS is relentlessly depressing too, but is much better because more Gilmour. I still dig MEDDLE, DSotM, WISH YOU WERE HERE and ANIMALS a lot. The Wall was where Roger Waters' ego, and tuneless whining, took over to the detriment of the band, in my view.

I've recently discovered Rick Wright's excellent late-70s album WET DREAM, which had somehow flown under my radar all these years. Roughly contemporaneous with THE WALL, I find it much more entertaining.
