Climate Scientist Announces She's a Skeptic, That She's Had It With the "CRAZINESS" of Politicized Science, and Resigns Her Tenured Job at Georgia Tech

The science is unsettling.

Here's Judith Curry's full statement:

Apart from my own personal career trajectory and the ‘shocks’ that started in 2005 with our hurricanes and global warming paper, and the massive spike in 2009/2010 from Climategate, I’ve found that universities have changed substantially over the past 5-10 years.

At first, I thought the changes I saw at Georgia Tech were due to a change in the higher administration (President, Provost, etc). The academic nirvana under the prior Georgia Tech administration of Wayne Clough, Jean-Lou Chameau and Gary Schuster was a hard act to follow. But then I started to realize that academia and universities nationwide were undergoing substantial changes. I came across a recent article that expresses part of what is wrong: Universities are becoming like mechanical nightingales.

That link goes to a Chinese parable about a mechanical nightingale that the courtiers grow so enamored with they completely forget about the real nightingale that inspired the ersatz one. It's a parable for universities becoming so enamored with models and abstractions they lose sight of the actual physical and social reality they're allegedly scholars of.

The reward system that is in place for university faculty members is becoming increasingly counterproductive to actually educating students to be able to think and cope in the real world, and in expanding the frontiers of knowledge in a meaningful way (at least in certain fields that are publicly relevant such as climate change). I've written on these topics before, I won't belabor this here.

So why not try to change the system from the inside? Well, this is not the battle I want to fight, apart from any realistic assessment of being able to shift the ponderous beast from within.

Or maybe it’s just a case of 'wrong trousers' as far as I'm concerned. Simply, universities no longer feel like the 'real deal' to me (note: this criticism is not targeted at Georgia Tech, which is better than most). It's time for me to leave the ivory tower.

A deciding factor was that I no longer know what to say to students and postdocs regarding how to navigate the CRAZINESS in the field of climate science. Research and other professional activities are professionally rewarded only if they are channeled in certain directions approved by a politicized academic establishment — funding, ease of getting your papers published, getting hired in prestigious positions, appointments to prestigious committees and boards, professional recognition, etc.

How young scientists are to navigate all this is beyond me, and it often becomes a battle of scientific integrity versus career suicide (I have worked through these issues with a number of skeptical young scientists).

She'll be burned in effigy as a heretic within a week and a day.

PS: I'm working on a post about the left's Narrative Building on the horrific hate crime we saw on FaceBook yesterday. Just want to get it right. Plus, every three minutes a new outrageous attempt at giving their fellow progs something to say in FaceBook Arguments comes up.

6 Professor William Happer (Princeton Emeritus Professor) did something similar recently, in that he went emeritus so he could speak freely, and condemn the unbelievable politics surrounding climate studies in academia. He specifically cited Judith Curry as someone whose work he particularly respects.

26 Judith Curry has previously murmured skepticism on the topic, so I don't doubt she's caught flak repeatedly for several years. There has been (at least in the past) something of a climate change skeptic mole movement at GT - I had a prof I can't remember the name of for Earth and Atmospheric Sciences 1600 who was hardcore Wattsish. Covered things like the rock cycle (aka one of the CO2 *negative* feedback loops and a reason for CO2 levels to trail increases in temperature). Aka "surprise, kids! In my opinion, the models are bullshit".

Curry giving up may be an indication that Bud's presidency is continuing to see a closing of ranks around academic cant. Sad. Clough had a major asshole streak, but Bud seems like a nicer guy.

I have a lot of admiration for her in that she has already started her own company and is now going full time there as I understand it. Good for her. If they're right, they'll prosper and if they're wrong, they'll fail. Hell, they may still fail even if they're right but it's a full step out to believe in what she's doing.

Yes, yes, she's getting her retirement from teaching and why shouldn't she? She worked the years to vest and now she gets it.

I just want to know, to the best limits of human understanding, how the world works. I just want to know, to the best limits of my ability to be reasonably skeptical, if those who know more about the underlying science than I do are themselves trying to find the truth, no matter where that leads.

I don't care if the truth is damaging to my ideology. If ideology cannot match with reality, ideology changes, not reality.

Fake science --- it's a thing.

Feynmann called it cargo cult science.

Climate science is the foremost example of cargo cult science in the "hard" (STEM) sciences.

All "soft" sciences are cargo cult sciences by definition. Applications to argue otherwise are welcome.

46 And this is probably exactly what happened in the last 30 years to render the "social sciences" mostly a vast wasteland of nonsense (ditto much of literature/English, etc).

So far, the inertia of public skepticism has remained intact, and provides a basis for restoration of rationality and science.

But if any area that the new administration can directly affect requires a 100 Megaton Wrecking Ball, it is this one. And as always it would be nice if Congress helped out by putting up huge roadblocks to every dime going to this nonsense.

Almost every new theory is unpopular and derided, with some being accurate enough to be refined and eventually accepted. Like plate tectonics. The Old Guard (tectonic-deniers) were never really convinced (despite mounting evidence), they just died off or retired so the Young Turks (not actually Turks) could finally teach it.

93 "all science is now political and you can NOT get any grants without towing the left wing party line"

The Clinton administration back in the 1990s (presumably under the internal influence of Algor) started denying proposals for federal research grants which previously would easily have passed muster. Even in fields where a connection to "climate change" is tenuous at best.

Unless of course the proposals contained explicit (or at least implicit) endorsement of the purported reality of "climate change".

Scientists figured this out rather quickly, as people do when they've been getting money and suddenly aren't getting money.

So whereas previously a proposal would have been titled something like "The Mating Habits of the Lesser Spotted Rocky Mountain Grunchwiller", now it would have to be retitled "The Effects Of Global Warming Upon the Mating Habits of the Lesser Spotted Rocky Mountain Grunchwiller".

The research itself didn't actually have to be changed all that much to qualify for funding, which was great for lazy academics who were phoning it in. Just as long as their papers _said_ the predetermined ideologically conformant things right up there in the title and abstract.

Then, fast forward a couple of years, and we have social scientists tabulating up all of these bullshit papers authored by people who aren't really equipped or trained to pronounce upon climate, and announcing sonorously that "there is a 97% consensus among scientists about the reality of global warming, based upon published peer reviewed articles".

Remember Eisenhower's farewell address? The one which liberals love to quote about the dangers of the "military-industrial complex"? Well, liberals don't quote it, but in the same section of the same speech, Ike warned about federal funding for science becoming dangerous. He was spot on.

158 Well and beautifully said, Dr. Curry.

If anyone wants to read a bit of inside baseball about just how profound the problems of Big Science are in this day and age, the book to look for is "The Rightful Place of Science: Science on the Verge" - $10 paperback and can easily be read and understood by non-scientists.

Also, if you can get your hands on it, the Spring/Summer 2016 issue of "The New Atlantis", with the lead paper "Saving Science From Itself", is equally spot-on.

The sad fact is however, so long as politicians have trillions of other peoples' dollars to toss around, they will only too happily spend small percentages of that buying "science" from careerists and credential/diploma factories.

But I do carry one of those stupid jump pack things in my trunk for when the battery inevitably gives out on me in the cold.

But no, usually in the cold I get strange electrical and/or acceleration issues (probably also electrical-related.)

Many years ago I had a Toyota 4 X 4 pickup, the old no-model-name Toyota 4 X 4. During a twenty-below spell, I went to put the key in the ignition and it wouldn't fit. Just would not go in. This was the ignition - *inside* the truck, and the key was not wet or anything, so no ice in the keyhole or on the key to blame. A few days later when the weather warmed up (to a balmy zero) the key fit again.

I mean, it won't really matter much. Voluntary intoxication is really not a defense to much. But that's really all their defense attorney can do. That or the "they're good kids, this isn't them" or "society made them do it" both of which are ... not strong arguments.

What better way to shore that up than to defend these kids against the white oppression?

Rae hustling isn't going away. If they were just charged with a normal crime, then I would agree. Being charged with a hate crime - the first time this has been done that I can remember (even though we've seen numerous case which SHOULD have been labeled as such). That makes it different.

It is really an impossible problem to solve. The way you are TAUGHT to program is that you consistently sanity-check your results and this his how you find bugs which you eliminate.

If you get an answer you don't expect, your first impulse will be to 'fix that bug.' If you are a member of a quasi-religious cult, you are going to immediately label anything that doesn't fit your narrative a bug. Every time.

Oddly enough, the models not matching the observations doesn't prove or disprove anything EXCEPT that computer models suck. Which (most) programmers already knew.

359 What is crazy for me about Judith Curry and the kerfuffle is that she was accurately labeled as a 'lukewarmer' by WattsUpWithThat years ago. IOW she had the proper scientific skeptical viewpoint (lets see if experiments or measurements support this theory) but she started as believing that the positive feedback of CO2 warming from increased water vapor was likely to be true. That became completely unacceptable as the Climate Change/Gaia religion grew in power while the temperature refused to follow the models. It is sad to me that science was so easily corrupted by government money; even knowing that it was a LOT of government money with the AGW crap. Lots of agencies, USDA, DoEnergy, etc. not just the big NOAA money were soliciting grants to prove AGW, and then if it was Ag, show how farmers can adapt, yada yada.

See, Trump was piggybacking on the enormous sums spent by Democrats. Plus, he was able to precisely calibrate his attacks to their strategy, because Putin told him exactly what they were up to behind closed doors.

363 of course the climate changes. what kinda dumb twit thinks it does not. But, you think humans have input in this. what a dweeb you are. all atheist that are god in their mind, hence the ability to change climate. theories are made to be debunked. man induced global climate changes have been debunked. go get another theory like REAL scientist. (you will not, as you are lap-dog progressives)

364 Speaking of science, I think I found that time machine that Teh Ewok totally doesn't have.

I like the seller's other offerings, Hadron Collider (home made from junkie's works) and the optomistically-named This Will Not Explode.

365 Judith Curry was well know and respected in the field although she has had a number of career problems lately. I remember several years ago when she co-authored a paper with Hansen or some other sell out and very publicly wanted her name off the paper after the other guy made ridiculous statements using the paper as a basis. She said the public hyperbole was wrong, the characterization of the findings was wrong, etc. etc. She began to be attacked (for having scientific integrity).
And the MSM gleefully covers "scientists" in NASA, EPA, Defense, Commerce and all over the Federal government, "backing up" their data in case Trump orders it all deleted. Yeah right. They are all suddenly accessing data at the same time but they are simply, "backing it up".

366 The left corrupts everything it touches. It has corrupted the university and the scientific method. You either become corrupted, or you leave. Dr. Curry, who I've had the pleasure of communicating with, has chosen to not be corrupted. Things that bias can be subtle, which is why science must be rigorous. And anyone who wishes to toss Popper out the window does so only because science is never settled. Our nation's colleges are set up to be massively disrupted by new learning systems. More to come.

367 BREAKING: Greta Van Susteren to Host New 6 PM Show on MSNBC
UMMMMM????

---------

Yep, taking her show in a totally different direction as indicated by that name of her new show.

Instead of "On the Record", it's going to be "For the Record".

368 Good for her. Bravo.

My science was pretty much settled when I read a report, years ago, of thermometers recording "change" right next to an air conditioning thingie in the hot sun.

Wish I could remember where I saw that article, but, poof. I blame Obarky for memory loss.

Yet, science is settled...believes no real scientist. Science was probably settled that six diseases were nearly eradicated in US: TB, measles, whooping cough, mumps, scarlet fever and bubonic plague. But all diseases are back! More cultural enlightenment from refugees!

Science in a fluid atmosphere of constant change is not settled. However, wanting to tax people to make Gore and people in Brussels richer is for sure settled.

When the Thames River freezes over again, like between 1600 and 1814, and a mini-Ice Age hits again, we'll talk then. Of course the climate is changing...it always has.

370 She is just getting this? What a fucknut! That is why I don't trust vaginas or those bearing them. Men knew these things, they just supported them for their own weaknesses, fears, and wants. Empty, but all an egghead ever has is false dreams, quite often. Bleh.

371 She'll be burned in effigy as a heretic within a week and a day.

No, not really. Dr. Curry has been a lukewarmer for quite some time. The skeptic crowd doesn't like her because (last time I looked) she insists that warming is occurring. The warming crowd doesn't like her because she insists that the models are too aggressive and do not include the proper response.

Her "stadium wave" paper was one of the best papers in all of science in the past decade, IMO. https://judithcurry.com/2013/10/10/the-stadium-wave/ It didn't "change the way I think about natural internal variability" but it was the first paper in climate science that approached the problem in a modern (post '80's) way. The blend of physics and mathematics was outstanding.
