Puddleglum, THX 1138 is Lucas' first official mainstream feature film. Francis Ford Coppola, who had built up some major clout thanks to his work on "Patton," saw Lucas' 1968 USC student film "Electronic Labyrinth" and offered him the money and opportunity to remake it for the 'big screen.'
And I agree, THX is also great. What's especially surprising is, it did *not* point very much at all to Star Wars; it was very much its own universe. Posted by: qdpsteve at December 29, 2016 06:16 PM (u8kLQ) 105

Spielberg is more in touch with *what the audience wants,* and willing to give it to them. Which has gotten him in tons of trouble with critics over the years, but also IMHO has made him a great director.
Jeffrey Wells has said that Spielberg will be remembered as an "event director," like Cecil B. DeMille, rather than someone artistic, like Hitchcock or DePalma. I would disagree; Spielberg is artistic, it's just that he doesn't hold middle America in contempt, in fact he's always seemed genuinely fond and appreciative of the "flyover states" and their general tastes. Floyde, it depends on what the director's history is, and how willing he/she is to make compromises to prove themselves again. Networking, networking, networking.
Michael Cimino killed himself, not just because he killed an entire studio with "Heaven's Gate," but because he was from beginning to end a complete entitled asshole arteeeest about it. He *was* given a chance to redeem himself as producer Herbert Ross offered him the opportunity to direct "Footloose" (!), but Cimino's bad attitude (he almost immediately wanted the budged doubled, among other things) really hurt him and his career, as it should have. I assume Russia's invitation to Trump and his SOS to come join the Syrian peace negotiations in January, is behind Obama's latest fit of toy-saber-rattling pique.

In my jaundiced view, yes. Because, comic-book sensibility. Same with Private Ryan, which, after the first fifteen minutes, is like Episode 76 of Combat. "Longest Day" was better and a movie for actual adults. But then again, de gustibus non est disputandum Posted by: Caliban at December 29, 2016 06:41 PM (3GFMN) 214
I heard that after Lucas finished Star Wars he was so sure it was a failure he took his family on vacation with Speilberg's family to Hawaii. His agent had to find him to tell him they had a major hit. Spielberg had told him it would be huge.

Caliban, yes, everyone is allowed their own tastes, but some of your opinions just seem odd. Jaws is a 'children's movie'? Schindler's List has 'comic-book sensibility'?

Since i was home sick today I decided to watch the entire Downfall movie. I'd never seen it all, just the memes. The first takeaway was how deeply socialist the Nazis were. Trump may be many things but hes no Socialist. The second was, how in the world has it come to be that the Republicans are synonymous with Nazis???? WTF?
Why do we let them continue to get away with this? Remember this was a German movie, not American ,supposedly not tainted by Hollywood Posted by: Pets Seria at December 29, 2016 06:45 PM (lJW6d) 222

W even, lamely in retrospect, allowed the fiscal 2009 budget to wait for Obama......even though when he left office we were in our 4th month of that fiscal year.
W was our gentleman doufus President. He got 2 terms mostly because the Ds picked Kerry in a knee jerk reaction to far lefties pushing Dean et al. Never occurred to the Ds that anyone with military experience will likely consider Kerry a traitor for giving 2nd hand testimony of military wrong doing (and wrong doing undersells it) in front of Congress and all of America. I saw Speilberg about a year ago driving in rural Marin Country. He was in some 1930s era mint convertible (not a car guy so not sure of make).
I'm only calling it a positive ID because I was at a stop sign and he slowed down as he drove by in front of me......looking right at me. I definitely looked like paparazzi in my hobo clothes and my 16 year old (and looking it) auto. Posted by: East Bay Jay at December 29, 2016 08:00 PM (PvCxa) 235
Trump should prepare an EO to declare a Ronald Reagan birth place monument for Han 20th.
The fact that Reagan's birthplace happens to be within the proposed footprint of the Brarack Obama Library should not be a problem for anybody (except perhaps the Obamas). Posted by: SMOD at December 29, 2016 08:03 PM (e8kgV) 236
