#NeverTrump Radio Host Announces He's Stepping Down Because He Doesn't Believe in the Conservative Movement Any Longer, In the New York Times, Naturally

I'd like to encourage more of this #TruConexit.

One fantasy these imbeciles peddled is that the election was Not a "binary choice." When I'd point out to them that opposing Trump meant, by inexorable logic, supporting Hillary, they would snap back that that was "binary thinking" and wasn't true due to Reasons they couldn't be bothered to spell out.

They were all very certain on this point: The election was not a "binary choice," so they were not working for Hillary every day of the election.

When you'd ask them who'd become president if not Trump, they'd either refuse to answer, or say "The election was over the moment Trump was nominated" (not true, as it turns out!), or say something obnoxious like "Not my monkey, not my circus."

This asshole is back with more of that here.

As I said: In the New York Times. Because of course. That's where all "conservatives" go to slander actual conservatives.

After nearly 25 years, I’m stepping down from my daily conservative talk radio show at the end of this month. I’m not leaving because of the rise of Donald J. Trump (my reasons are personal), but I have to admit that the campaign has made my decision easier. The conservative media is broken and the conservative movement deeply compromised.

In April, after Mr. Trump decisively lost the Wisconsin Republican primary, I had hoped that we here in the Midwest would turn out to be a firewall of rationality. Our political culture was distinctly inhospitable to Mr. Trump’s divisive, pugilistic style; the conservatives who had been successful here had tended to be serious, reform-oriented and able to express their ideas in more than 140 characters. But in November, Wisconsin lined up with the rest of the Rust Belt to give the presidency to Mr. Trump.

How on earth did that happen?

Before this year, I thought I had a relatively solid grasp on what conservatism stood for and where it was going....

In short, I was under the impression that conservatives actually believed things about free trade, balanced budgets, character and respect for constitutional rights. Then along came this campaign.

....

When I wrote in August 2015 that Mr. Trump was a cartoon version of every left-wing media stereotype of the reactionary, nativist, misogynist right, I thought that I was well within the mainstream of conservative thought -- only to find conservative Trump critics denounced for apostasy by a right that decided that it was comfortable with embracing Trumpism....

To be sure, some of my callers embraced Mr. Trump’s suggestion for a ban on Muslims entering the country and voiced support for a proposal to deport all Muslims 000 even citizens. One caller compared American Muslims to rabid dogs. But right to the end, relatively few of my listeners bought into the crude nativism Mr. Trump was selling at his rallies.

What they did buy into was the argument that this was a "binary choice." No matter how bad Mr. Trump was, my listeners argued, he could not possibly be as bad as Mrs. Clinton. You simply cannot overstate this as a factor in the final outcome. As our politics have become more polarized, the essential loyalties shift from ideas, to parties, to tribes, to individuals. Nothing else ultimately matters.

In this binary tribal world, where everything is at stake, everything is in play, there is no room for quibbles about character, or truth, or principles. If everything -- the Supreme Court, the fate of Western civilization, the survival of the planet -- depends on tribal victory, then neither individuals nor ideas can be determinative. I watched this play out in real time, as conservatives who fully understood the threat that Mr. Trump posed succumbed to the argument about the Supreme Court. As even Mr. Ryan discovered, neutrality was not acceptable; if you were not for Mr. Trump, then you were for Mrs. Clinton.t anymore.

His listerners were convinced it was a "binary choice" because it was a binary choice: Either Clinton or Trump would be president, and none other.

If he had gotten out of his Twitter/listserv bubble for ten minutes, and let his mind be still without a thousand other #NeverTrumpers cultishly chanting "not a binary choice, not a binary choice," perhaps he would have seen that it was a binary choice.

But these people are very clannish and slavishly imitative of each other.

And the choice was not the choice of an ideal; it was a comparative, a weighing of this against that. The fact that many #NeverTrumpers clearly preferred Hillary in this comparative choice -- all the while lying that they didn't -- does not change the fact that they did, in fact, prefer Hillary.

There was lots of room for discussion of character and policy and all the stuff this asshole talks about. But there was also room for discussion of the binary choice of "Which is ultimately better for the country, warts and all, and which is ultimately worse-- Hillary or Trump?"

The #NeverTrumpers did not wish to talk about that question, preferring to preen about perfect Platonic Ideals and how much better they were than everyone else.

I'll say it: I want them gone. They say we've revealed our stripes; fine, I'll say they've revealed their own.

Go. Get gone, be gone, and stay gone.

Join the liberals, which 90% of you are already 90% of the way along to doing. Just make it official, so we don't have another crop of fake conservatives appearing in the liberal media for the only purpose of collecting a check while bashing other conservatives -- the ones who are actually looking out for this country's future, rather than their own reputability and acceptabllity to their would-be liberal media employers.

By the way, Sykes will soon be collecting royalties for the new book he's writing: How the Right Lost Its Mind. And no, that's not a joke; the NYT article advertises this upcoming sure-to-be-greeted-warmly-by-the-Times'-reviewer book in noting Sykes bio at article's end.

By the way, Sykes is getting a lot of positive tweets from, get this, NYT reporters and other hard-left liberals. And he's retweeting them proudly -- almost as if he's looking for another tribe to Join.

Some are Joiners, some are Leaders.

14 The Saga Staggers:

The Golden Scalp Weasel at the pinnacle of Trump Tower is alight, sign that the master is in residence.
In the yuge magnificent penthouse Donald Trump continues his meetings with supplicants and applicants. This day is for the latter and kneeling before his throne made of the skulls of clowns and candidates are the Lords of Tech, rulers of the Principality of Silicon.
"We come before you, O Bearer of the Golden Scalp Weasel."
"We lay our arms down before you in submission."
"We fought you and you beat us with our own weapons."
"Your Tweets could not be withstood."
"Our Apps, our server farms, our very patents and registered trademarks are yours to command."
Trump looks over the kneeling crowd of tech nerds and chuckles.
"You all wrote that I wasn't fit to be president and yet here we are today."
"That was a bit hasty on our part, I'll admit..." Baron Bezos begins.
"And that fishwrap you bought is still attacking me. Sad."
"The Post is in rebellion. They have barricaded the doors and pour boiling ink on any who approach the gates. They are well-stocked for a siege with large stores of bagels, coffee, and hot pockets. It will be months before full control can be restored."
"Do so or I shall utter the maledictions of Teddy Roosevelt and invoke the dread Anti-Trust against you bigly."
"No! Anything but that!"
The Golden Scalp Weasel arches its claws and hisses warningly as all shudder.
"That goes for the rest of you. Your imperial governors will be arriving soon and you shall prepare for them. Now I must prepare for my Triumph."
"You mean inauguration, don't you?"
"Yeah, that's what I meant. Inauguration."
The Lords of Tech leave. Once alone Trump picks up his phone and makes a call.
"Vlad, you were right about that after all..."

As a private voter, there's also the question of what state you're in. Pennsylvania and Wyoming are two very different states, and if you're a conservative in one or the other, the calculus is very different.

I live in SC, so I decided to protest vote and voted for Gary Johnson. There was no chance in hell that Trump was losing my state, so I tried to say...something.

If I lived in any state that was remotely considered a swing state that would have changed, and I would have voted for Trump.

However, if you're a radio personality trying to influence voters, that's a different ball game. Because your audience is going to fairly broad, you need to be appealing to that broader audience that are in different situations. Refusing to see that in your audience is a killer for your career as a thought leader, and refusing to see how and why conservatives might have chosen Trump over Clinton is a failure on his part.

58 Fear and Loathing in Chappaqua

The desert is a harsh but beautiful place. Delicate cactus flowers dot the rolling dunes like measles spots on a young boy's face.

As the sun beat down mercilessly, the woman blinked twice and then rubbed her eyes in disbelief. There, a scant 100 yards away was a shimmering oasis. Palm trees bowed in the gentle breeze, a glittering lake of pure, clear, refreshing water. After what seemed a lifetime of stumbling through the unforgiving terrain her quest was nearing the end. Her lips were cracked and dry and burning, parched with the unending heat. Her thirst yearned to be quenched. Lurching to her hands and knees she began to crawl toward the oasis. Unsteadily she placed one hand in front of the other, one knee in front of the other, dragging herself the last few yards. She could discern a small wooden building, could it be a house of some sort? She was no ways too tired to reach the object of her desire.

After what seemed an eternity, she knew that her destiny was finally within grasp. Just then, a sharp wind blew across the dunes and a thin layer of billowing sand blocked her view of the oasis. As the sand settled, and the oasis came back into sight, she was able to make out a sign on the side of the building. Blinking her eyes one more time, the trees, the lake, the building suddenly vanished. Just before the mirage blinked out of view she was able to make out the lettering on the sign. "White House" was all it said.

"Noooooooooooo.....!" Her scream echoed across the barren landscape.

He obviously would have been happier if they had given Hillary the victory.

In short, I was under the impression that conservatives actually believed things about free trade, balanced budgets, character and respect for constitutional rights. Then along came this campaign.

Hhmm, he doesn't mention that the gov't should work for all citizens and not the establishment. And for spouting off about the Constitution he obviously forgot that Congress, which has been Republican for six years, controls the purse strings. Plus, Trump, for all of his crudity, has less character than Hillary? Of course he mentioned the shibboleth of free trade which Republicans weren't for until the 70's. 72 I stopped listening to Sykes long ago anyhow, so his leaving the market means diddly to me.
His alternative in the Milwaukee market isn't that much better, but if you want to listen to conservative radio in Milwaukee, it is a binary choice; either this guy or the other guy.

I chose the other guy.

Sykes had two annoying things that drove me away, and one of them was his berating of anyone who had an artificial Christmas tree. It was a bellwether to him on the goodness of a person, which I found as ridiculous as George Will and his aversion to jeans. An affectation that signifies superiority but in reality means nothing.

His other was a method of making himself look like an insider with great insight (or something) wherein he'd stretch out a story for three segments, getting comments from callers along the way, but after every commercial break, he'd bleed out a little more of the story and people's opinions would of course change. Once I caught onto that gambit, there was nothing more he could offer me. Fuck him. Good riddance.

Trump is an outsider. Will he advance a conservative agenda? Not really sure.

Will he make America competitive again, and b*tch slap both the democrats and the RINOs? I certainly hope so. THAT is why I voted for him.

122 This jerkoff is apparently unaware that there aren't enough free trade fundamentalist conservatives to win a fucking Presidential election.

We ran Romney in 2012 - a man with impeccable personal character (almost weirdly so - as if he was without passions), principles, and ticked off all or most orthodox conservative boxes and he lost miserably against a failing President. The Nation rejected this near-Platonic cardboard conservative.

Some of these assholes are just addicted to losing and preening about their "principles" that have no chance of being made policy due to the aforementioned losing. Your life isn't a cinematic tragedy where the hero's principles are vindicated after his sacrifice - you just lose, and lose some more, and the nation gets progressively distant and hostile to your principles with less of a chance of any meaningful return.

The best were the #NeverTrumpers who made a prior identity out of publicly fondling guns - yes, asshole, Hillary was no threat to the Second Amendment something something.

Even then, what was His fiscal policy? I believe there was that incident with the moneychangers. Where does He stand on global warming? Would He care if the seas rose, when He could just walk across them? What about His tax policy? "Render unto Caesar" sounds like a tax and spend policy. And on defense? "Turn the other cheek?" We need a more muscular defense policy than that.

Trump is re-branding the R party, which always had a clubbish classist tinge that limited its brand appeal.

If Trump has an effective first term I can see lots more minorities and disaffected others in the D party switching sides. Because at the national level, the D Party is now about promoting the interests of The Borg above all else.

I suppose what's always bothered me is that some people don't understand compromise. That's understandable given how we have ended up with some of these deals cut in Washington. But it was about the type of compromise. It was never about whether we compromise at all. That take no prisoners my way or nothing else tact has never worked in our history. Another Appeals Court Vacancy

It was never SCOTUS that moved me towards Trump as much as the idea of the lower courts. The lower courts are the bench for the Supreme Court. Without a Trump win we'd be looking at 12 years, at least, of Obama and Clinton having fairly free reign to appoint at that level meaning that SCOTUS might not just have been gone for a generation, but the entire judiciary branch would be beyond our reach for possibly even longer.

Now, with Trump's apparent, "I'm letting Mike Pence have a large hand in choosing nominees and F Democrats" attitude, we may be able to see the lower courts filled out with more Clarence Thomas'.

If he tightens border security in a meaningful way, makes Supreme Court picks from the list he published early in the campaign, allows the economy to grow, and doesn't do anything else too stupid, we'll consider him a success (well, I will, anyway).

If you're anti-Trump and wonder why we're giving him such an easy list of goals, it's because Republican candidates have consistently failed to meet even that low set of expectations in the last 30 years.

Being focused on helping people who need (emplasis on need) help, for example. I think Trump may be the perfect President for this country right now because like it or not he is a MODERATE who embraces ideas from both sides, is focused on a patriotic love of the USA and its citizens, and is an a/b testing machine who will not try to jam through unpopular legislation without a single vote from the other side and then pretend it's working great. He just seems more focused on practicality and patriotism than on an ideology to me, and as I said I think that's exactly what the doctor ordered.

We do no have the luxury of faith to an ideology right now. War clouds are still gathering. Much work to be done before it begins.

198 I think a lot of people lost sight of this idea about free markets.

For one thing they never existed. It's a utopian idea propagated in a book. There's always been some obstacle to a free market whether it's geography, tariffs, or just plain greed.

Also it got to the point where the idea of obtaining a free market became more important than anything else, as though it's value was independent of anything else in reality. Markets exist to serve people, they aren't an end in themselves. If they're not serving people, or actively hurting a large swath of people, than it's a problem.

=====================

It's the difference between taking over a party and building one from the ground up. In one way, conservatives haven't taken over the party but they (we) have undermined the current power structure.

At the moment, that power is held in the hands of Donald Trump, but it won't be forever. If conservatives want to advance towards making the Republican Party a conservative party, then we need to realize that fighting Donald Trump is probably not the best way to do it. It would be continuing the interparty fights we've been having since at least 2010. It's fighting our Congress critters and our state houses to becoming more conservative.

Trump's brand of Republicanism will probably diminish along with him leaving office, unless we allow it to take over the lower power centers. Use Trump as a weapon against the current/previous establishment (and that tends to mean supporting him as much as possible) while making sure that the leadership ranks of the Republican Party continue to become more and more conservative. And, when Trump leaves, hopefully with an electorally stronger party in his wake, we'll be there as the de facto power.

That all requires helping Trump as much as possible now, though.

The vast bulk of voters on both sides are non-ideological. The idea that was conservatism in the US from roughly 1980-2015 simply ceased to be useful, so it's been abandoned by all those whose careers weren't tied to it. And because of how tribal identification works, people will not feel like they've changed a thing - people who identified strongly with free market absolutism will identify strongly with nationalism, and believe they always have.

I'm not for harming homosexuals or in general discriminating against them. However, I'm not for normalizing it or saying it is some valid lifestyle. Just like I don't think normalizing single motherhood is good, or drug use, or alcoholism.

So either a) Start preparing for the fallout from that or b) place nice to mitigate whatever damage you can.

Frankly Ace is, wrong. It was not strictly binary: The third option was to realize that while Trump will mean less short term harm, the long-term harm level remains largely unchanged regardless of who had won (with the Caveat that Hillary might have sparked one or more wars.)

That probably wouldn't survive a court challenge based on the idea that the Constitution explicitly calls for a SCOTUS, and zeroing it out goes against that mandate.

Also, the court would say no out of pure self preservation.

Sykes mentioned among other things free trade and the gall of people to actually want a border wall.

On some issues, like entitlement reform, Trump really ran like a lefty. But quite tellingly, I havent seen Sykes saying anything about that. Instead he throws around lefty buzzwords like "nativist" and complaints that the right actually has the gall to want to get serious on immigration.

On this stuff Trump certainly is closer to Calvin Coolidge and conservatism than the Kempists like Ryan and Sykes.

Don't think so. Congress doesn't have any control over the total number of justices on the SC, except that the actual people need to be approved by the senate. They'd still need to impeach (successfully) the 8 sitting justices.

And the Constitution does explicitly say that there has to be a Supreme Court. The other branches of government can't just abolish it without a constitutional amendment.

Trump also has evolved since then. 262 In short, I was under the impression that conservatives actually believed things about free trade, balanced budgets, character and respect for constitutional rights. Then along came this campaign.

He's right about all this. And that's what made this campaign season suck. But that's been true for the last 3 elections. Neither Romney nor McCain were big on free trade, balanced budgets, or constitutional rights. What they were big on was open borders and big government -- their big government.

And here's my problem with guys like this: they didn't have a problem with those previous two candidates, and blew a gasket on this one. McCain is no paragon of virtue. Romney invented Obamacare. Lets not act like this is a candidate too far.

It seems obvious to me that their concern is not conservatism, but the right sort of people. Trump is crass and crude and talks like a doofus (in public), he's unapologetic and worse comes from the wrong sort of people. He wasn't part of Skull and Bones, he didn't attend the right schools, he isn't one of the inner circle of people that the Right Sort approve of. He's not Chamber of Commerce approved.

266 Trump's brand of Republicanism will probably diminish along with him leaving office, unless we allow it to take over the lower power centers.

Passage of laws on voter ID, right to work (without paying union dues), unbundling cable, removing the Hollywood tax cuts, and making "sanctuary cities" financially liable for crimes committed by those to whom they gave sanctuary - all perfectly doable legislatively, I suspect - would, along with a rebounding economy, pretty much geld the Democrat Party.

Trump, like me, is for free trade. He says that every chance he gets.

The difference is that he and I know free trade needs to be fair trade. If we allow the goods of a country to be sold duty-free in the U.S., that country must allow the goods and services of the U.S. to be sold in their country - without duties, restrictions and other roadblocks designed to the make the trade one way.

Trump is correct in that the people we've had negotiating these agreements in the past have been idiot academics or campaign coffee boys made into assistant Secretaries of Commerce.

"free markets" according to Friedman said the corporation/company only has responsibility to make a buck, from anywhere in the world. So "free trade" only means free access to slaves, polluters, currency manipulators, contaminated fish, etc.?

No sorry ... conflicting national interests are a concern to "true conservatives", and that does not happen magically by opening trade to China. It is not about "retribution", it is about stopping almost trillion a year trade deficits, which allows China and others to buy up our nation. Stopping such "invasion" is just basic defense.

Yes, they have changed the number of justices on the court, but I don't think they do that by saying "The Supreme Court is now comprised of 9 justices" and then approving appointments to fill it up. The "size" of the supreme court is not a defined quantity, it's just all the justices that have been appointed and approved that are still alive and serving. Congress has only ever increased the size too. Justices have to be impeached, so even if tomorrow they were to say "the size is zero" then what happens to the 8 sitting justices? They don't stop being justices because congress said so.

I could be wrong, though.

There never was, remember the fights in here over Giuliani in '08? The fights over Terry Schiavo? There's always been a wide range of ideas and opinions. Some try to ala carte it, so they love free trade and small government, but stay out of my bedroom! Some prefer social conservatism but want the power of the government to enforce it.

Conservatism is pretty much just constitutionalism and a love of virtue the way the founding fathers saw it. That's never wrong and never gone.

285 >>When have we ever had free trade?

When have we ever had border security?

I think far too often people judge based on the ideal outcome of their philosophy which never, ever happens. The focus should be on who is most likely to advance policies toward my desired outcome.

People who sit around and scream "He isn't conservative enough" are useless and miss the point entirely. Nobody ever gets exactly what they want in a democracy. Never happens. Not us, not even the left.

Trump is moving the ball back to the right on virtually every topic. That is about all you can realistically hope for. And with the people he is putting in his cabinet and his focus on the obvious deficiencies of our current free trade situation I have no doubt we will get a much better environment.

286 Most of what the GOP was selling yesterday. Trump was selling tomorrow.

The GOPs list of principles sounded like a cheap commercial. It was a rote list they memorized and repeated like a mantra. I honestly don't think most of them believed it. And many of them proved it.

The online trucon crowd bought into most of the failed list and tried to hold people to its orthodoxy. That's a fail right there.

To me, Trumps election. Reminds me a lot of Reagan. I'm not saying he is, lest the trucons go zombie, but the circumstances feel similar.

Basically these are bitter people who have put their own ego ahead for the country all because they did not like Trump. I have no sympathy for them. There are lots of people who did not like Trump, and yet voted for him because it was best for the nation. Heck even Trump, Mr. Ego himself, as shown a lot more magnanimity then any of these people since the end of the election.

The proof it was the right decision to vote for Trump is what we are seeing now from the left. They are threatening electors with violence, storming the inauguration, bizarre secession plots, you name it. Yet it is Trump and his supporters who are the violent ones?

I am also getting annoyed by those "conservatives" who continue to attack Trump over stuff like the "Russian Hack". That is only helping the left's attempt to at the least de-legitimize the election, and at worst a coup. That is what the left historically does when they don't get what they want, go all FARC...

323 So...all these "principled" GOPers were ok with the Hag for President and choosing next SCOTUS. Makes sense! NOT.

Multiple choice, Morons...

A giant asteroid destroys earth. You are one of the survivors on a 6x6' island with one palm tree, The Hag, one of Barry's cabinet "wimmen" (Yellen, Lynch, etc), and a hungry honey badger. Sharks are circling the island. Prior to the go boom asteroid you had just taken a Cialis with your lady, so you have one of those four hour erections you have always dreamed of. What to do? Who to do?

a) Hag. Depends on how desperate you are. Think of what lies under that pantsuit as well as trying to get it on during her constant cussing and bobble head roll.

b) Female cabinet member. Unsure of what lies under the skirt except you know dang well there are those piano legs, which, for sure, appear to be on their resumes for job.

c) Palm tree. While this would be safe, consider the acute painful Peyronie's like Bill you may have to live with until death from dehydration or going psycho from listening to the Hag.

d) Honey badger. This may be the correct choice: quick suicide by honey badger.

e) Swimming to get away from island. Another good choice if (d) is too gory of a thought. Sharks may fear the protrusion hanging from human.

All I know is that (a) would never be the correct answer. Ask Bill why he is dickin' all the bimbos.

Same here. The truth is that even Reagan wasn't Reagan. At the time he was elected he was flayed for many of the same things Trump now gets flayed for (stupid, unqualified, unstable, etc.). The Northeast GOP establishment was horrified by Reagan, and liberals bleated about nuclear war, etc.

Recall also that the first year or so of his first term featured huge interest rates that clobbered the economy, and he was blamed for that too. (By people who'd never heard of Volcker, who by wringing out inflationary expectations was laying the foundation for a burgeoning economy later.)

It was only later that Reagan was held in higher regard, and he only achieved his present status in retrospect.

A little silly I guess, but country takes a long time to form, then we fight for it, then we are taxed to grow it, we debate ideas .... but we sell it all out just because slave labor is cheaper in commie states, that may well brutalize their people, or send them to war against us?

This notion that we must out compete on everything seems goofy. We trade when it serves us well, not because of some altruistic obligation to "free trade" religion. France said they don't care if Airbus ever makes a profit ... and that hurt our industry. Other countries protect their own. We can prefer our country like we prefer our kids.

But I don't get it AT ALL when someone like Sykes starts babbling about "rule-of-law" and "Constitutional rights."

How in the world could anyone who cares about those two things tolerate the very idea of a Hillary presidency?
Hillary is a staunch opponent of the 2nd amendment and hostile to the 1st, in regard to both freedom of speech and religion. She believes in NO restraint on the federal government's power.

And rule-of-law? Good grief. Outside of support for such things as sanctuary cities and her own lawlessness, Hillary is a firm believer in rule by random executive regulation.

It's not so much a religion as it is the foundation of this country. Does anyone actually remember what the Boston Tea Party was all about? And that was just the culmination of years of the Brits trying to strangle any free trade in the Colonies.

Aside from a few key industries that are necessary in times of national emergencies, the real reason I think France and the other partnering governments care about keeping Airbus around, I don't believe in protectionism. 396 Have to disagree with Ace on something that bugged me all cycle. The choice of who to support was not binary, and not voting for Trump was not the same thing as voting for Hillary. It's basic math that choosing to add 0 to Option A is not the same as choosing to add 1 to Option B. Please stop telling people 0 doesn't exist. They know intuitively that such a claim is bullshit, even if they can't quite put it into words. All that claim does is make people shut down, go defensive, and stop being willing to even entertain any further discussion. To that person, you become the same as an idiot enviro-loon who equates skepticism with "you want the planet to burn".

What is true is that not voting for Trump increased the likelihood of Clinton winning. That's how it needed to be presented all along. If you start here instead of taking the flying leap from "dislike Trump" straight to "want Hillary to win", you can actually have a conversation on whether that dislike is worth increasing the chances of the witch winning.

431 What is true is that not voting for Trump increased
the likelihood of Clinton winning. That's how it needed to be presented
all along. If you start here instead of taking the flying leap from
"dislike Trump" straight to "want Hillary to win", you can actually have
a conversation on whether that dislike is worth increasing the chances
of the witch winning.

You'd think we would have learned some of those lesson dating back to the The War of Southern Treason. The South lost as much on lack of resources as much as anything else.

437 It's also the case that if the #Nevertrumpers had a point about a non-binary choice, Hillary could have pledged to focus her Presidency on a narrow cast of issues that were least offensive to conservatives. But of course she didn't, because she didn't need to persuade them or win their support as it was freely given for nothing in return.

But she was going to win, and had every intention of winning big - and in any event claiming a broad left wing mandate and leading a blitzkrieg of long standing left wing agenda items from the SCOTUS on down. They were trying to make this happen, and largely for selfish reasons.

Nice strawmen you've built there.

I have come to like Trump more since the election than I did when I voted for him, because I approve of most of his picks and actions since then. But there has been plenty of argument here over those picks and plenty of disagreement. It's disingenuous for you to say that everyone who voted for or backed Trump is a blindly loyal follower of his.

"Also, the idea that NeverTrumpers were 90% liberal/progressive is deliberately disingenuous."

Who is saying this. I don't think they are liberal/progressive. I think they are TruCons with impossibly high standards of ideological purity and because of that some would have preferred a Hillary win. Now people like Sykes are being used by liberals/progressives who want to delegitimize Trump as much as possible.

Will they run the story tonight of the fake news recant in NYC, now that the lovely Muslim girl has done her sympathy haircut? Great optics, but not exactly the story the ABC editors fish for.

I agree with the first paragraph. The Boston Tea Party was a reaction to the heavy-handed enforcement of the UK's Mercantile trade system. American's wanted direct trade with foreign countries. American iron works, for instance, could only pour pig iron, which was then exported ONLY to England for refinement, The refined iron was then shipped back to the colionies for small-scale manufacturing purposes. Taxes and product cost-markups all the way around and coming out of the colonists' wallets.

Exactly. The whole taxation without representation movement reached it's peak with the Tea Party but at the time we were still under colonial rule.

The Brits responded with the Coercive Acts and shut down the port of Boston to most shipping by the colonists and the colonists responded by calling the first Continental Congress. All because people wanted to be free to trade without the heavy hand of government interfering with their trade.

In the general he downplayed the issue where he could, but more importantly, he hit a home-run where he couldn't. That 3rd debate, where he focused squarely on LATE-TERM abortion, was a winner. You could tell he was actually sincere about it too.

I personally know 3 so-con #Nevertrumpers who came over to his side after that debate. And it energized the pro-life GOTV groups ....bigly.

Anyway, our country is not about making the world a better place. It is about states getting together to make a federal government that would defend us in wars .... common defense. "We" were very wary of immigration from foreign lands from the start, but at the beginning we depended on imports for some things, I suppose.

Defending our country means in trade and war, and immigration. Foreigners or foreign ownership (via deficit money) are both contrary to "provide for the common defense". as I see it.

Because you claimed it was about sovereignty which is just flat wrong. They were Englishmen and demanded the right of Englishmen which was expressly noted in the English Bill of Rights.

The colonists had no representation in Parliament and felt aggrieved that they were constantly being hit with taxes without anyway to plead their case before Parliament which was the right of all Englishmen. They weren't looking for sovereignty at the time, they were looking for the government to honor their rights.

When it became clear that the Brits were not going to honor those rights and would instead double down with more tyrannical acts, that was the beginning of a move toward sovereignty. And again, it was predicated on the British government not allowing them the free trade that was available to other British subject.

true, at the time. They worked within the rule of British law, so it does not seem to apply to global free trade. But I guess your point is good, the colonies could have traded "freely" with some other foreign entity.

I don't see that applying broadly to the foundation of the country being about global free trade, but I have a lot of reading to do before speaking with authority.

Simply to me, it is defensive to put our own people to work first. Certainly "free trade" CAN be a tool for making the world a better place. But it always comes down to specific deals. Comparative advantage stuff has a lot of limitations as well. There are many "externalities" that invade on pure economic theory.

560 Just stopping by to say, it was not a Binary Choice ©

I supported Gary Johnson because I wanted to see the paradigm change. I'm not disputing that the most vocal people who were #NeverTrump may have been self-serving hacks who wanted to keep earning that sweet, sweet establishment dough. And I'm not disputing that we did not have a 99% chance of a binary outcome. But there are plenty of choices, and voting on principle or not voting at all is always a CHOICE.

I'm not all that thrilled that a crude New York liberal like Donald Trump is our President. But I am absolutely Thrilled that Hillary Clinton's career is over. So props to you guys who backed Trump and made sure that happened.

So you guys have your fun. Try not to let too much perversion of Conservative ideals creep in while you celebrate the yuuuge deals that Trump will be making. And be nice to your local Libertarians. Yes, they're crazy. But if we want the paradigm to shift then we need the SJWs to completely melt down and the ascendant class of urban elitist prigs to embrace the idea that practically no government at all is a better way to operate a society than trying to buy off the system.

Then our Binary Choice © will be between two philosophies that both distrust government, but who differ on Nationalistic identity versus Open-border-free-for-all operations. I would be thrilled to have this be the 2-sided debate, while Socialists and Pajama Boys get left out in the cold for a very long time.

So like Jim Brown, I'm comin' round. I'm up to GWB levels of satisfaction, and I see a lot of potential going forward. Certainly his cabinet appointments have been masterfully handled.

567 Nevertrump is alwayshillary. Fuck these scum. All of them. They were never on America's side. May they all rot in hell. Erick Von Erick of Erickson, Ben Shapiro, and the other shitbags who tried to elect a fucking Stalinist because their goddam feelings were hurt. I have more respect for the likes of that communist dick licker Van Jones than I do for these abject scum who claim to be "real conservatives" while actively campaigning for a brain damaged piece of human garbage who thinks the wrong side won the Cold War.

May they rot in hell.

568 Funny how the guy who's never been conservative (just anti liberal) is attacking a conservative.

569 "The New York Times . . . where all "conservatives" go to slander actual conservatives."

Yep.

570 Charlie Sykes became unlistenable(?) a looong time ago. We have great choices here to listen to in WI, so So Long, Sykes. Don't let the door hit you.

571 I, too, live in Wisconsin, and have heard this jabberwocky's lame-ass talk show. Sykes was always the lowest common denominator of faux-conservative talk radio. His show was the broadcast equivalent of Ambien; a bunch of retirees phoning in to agree with Charlie that doggone it, something must be done. These rusty customers would get home from Silver Sneakers class, or having coffee at McDonald's and call in to dither over whatever they just saw in the Journal-Sentinel. Had they read school lunch menus and lost dog ads it would have been less annoying than Charlie. Fridays he would give out the "Deep Tunnel" award for the crappiest news item(get it?) from that week, and would play a clip of Bart Simpson saying "What a load of cappy cap crap" follow ed by a cut of a toilet flushing. Seriously, this is what Sykes considered cutting edge. He was as timely and up to date as last Tuesday.
Charlie Sykes getting out of broadcast media is addition by subtraction. Now he can live his dream of writing bland, shitty, unfunny, books free of insight; that is, he can become the Irma Bombeck of political authorship.
Take a walk, pal. It's about fucking time.

572 "In short, I was under the impression that conservatives actually
believed things about...balanced budgets, character and
respect for constitutional rights."

Well, aren't you just a special kind of stupid?

Conservatives obviously don't believe in any of this, hence the Alt-Right ascension.

573 Who ever heard of this Sykes guy anyway?

574 Overboard. I recommend Orwell's essay, "Through a Glass, Rosily".

Just as the #NeverTrumpers were absurdly narrow, so are the #PurgeTheNeverTrumpers.

576 "Some are Joiners, some are Leaders."
Said the groveling, servile, opinion adapting to get along, principle dropping coward who chose popularity in the garbage people echo chamber over any kind of reason or honor.

577 RE: "Also, the idea that NeverTrumpers were 90% liberal/progressive is deliberately disingenuous."

Hey Bourbon -- Ace doesn't really believe that. He's just blowing off steam again and is *still* angry with people who were 1) conservatives [I don't know this radio guy and have no idea if he was or was not conservative] and 2) refused to vote for Trump. I'm not certain why that's the case, but it just sort of took hold of him over the past year.

The good news is that Ace and this blog are much much happier places to be these days, now that Trump has won -- I've enjoyed AOS for years now and am really glad that it's rebounded from the past ten months. I didn't vote for Trump and am glad I didn't -- made the right decision and I'm sure everybody else believes they did as well. I don't care what I'm called, either, by total strangers.

It's been fascinating to see Trump's cabinet picks, decisions, etc, and as I said before the election, if Trump were to win, it will certainly be a much more interesting country for a while! So I've wildly enjoyed the tears of the libs -- election night was just awesome for me and it's barely slowed down since then either -- Schadenfraude-delicious. Plus, I and my family will be better off, a little, economically with him in power rather than Hillary.

Missed seeing your comments.
