The Hill, Opinion: "America Held Hostage By Flyover States"

As @BookofTamara said, "It's now week 5 [post-election] and their commitment to Not Getting It has not weakened one bit."

A special word from the Adult Babies:

The predominant narrative coming out of the 2016 presidential post-election analysis is: The flyover states have spoken.

A flyover state is the huge region between the coasts. As opposed to the eastern seaboard, northern post-industrial states and Pacific Ocean states. They’re overwhelmingly Republican, stanchly conservative, regressive right wing, evangelical Christian and working class, well, the loudest, most ill-informed of them are. The term wasn't commonly used in a political manner until recently with the emergence of the Tea Party and the election of Obama.

A visit to Wichita, Kan., isn't on the bucket list of many Americans. Whereas most travelers fly over Fayetteville, Ark., and Springfield, Mo. They’re not destination spots. The flyover state gripe has nothing to do with the tourist industry of Oklahoma or Nebraska or Iowa. This is about their perceived feelings of abandonment and disrespect from their government. Never mind they've elected local, state and national representatives that should reflect their values and interests.

Forsetti's Justice writes:

"Government has not done enough to help them in many cases but their local and state governments are almost completely Republican and so too are their Representatives and Senators. Instead of holding them accountable, they vote them in over and over and over again."

Now they've elected Donald Trump, the ultimate coastal elite. Trump pandered to their bigotry, and anger at Washington, D.C.

The more entrenched the flyover voting bloc becomes in their voting habits, the further they fall behind economically, by voting against their own interests, the more they blame Washington, D.C. and coastal "liberal elites" for their issues.

This is a voter demographic fond of describing themselves as hard-working middle-class Americans. Which they are. They’re overwhelmingly middle-aged to senior, white, semi-rural, increasingly suburban and indignant. They seem to be perpetually enraged every election cycle, and after, according to the results.

Takes some balls for a Social Justice Warrior to accuse someone else of being "indignant" or "enraged."

These babies are still shrieking, but they think their opponents are "enraged"?

They either want their country back or they’re tired of being ignored. They regularly blurt the latter as justification for electing right-wing theocrat/closed minds, austerity minded, cultural fascists to office. These are people that use more government subsidy than any segment of the country, but they hate "handouts" to anyone else. They are the largest consumers of SNAP benefits, Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security.

Note this unhinged screed appears proudly in The Hill, an ostensibly neutral, sensible publication.

Since the inception of the term silent majority almost 50 years ago, and all of its iterations since, this block of voters was hardly a majority and never silent. This group has been exceedingly adept at dominating the narrative in virtually every election cycle. They’re proficient at dog-whistle propaganda, and since the mid-1980s, they've created their own media echo-chamber which exponentially multiplies the sound of their own voices, with no interference from outside sources.

Again: the Balls.

This was accomplished mainly with coast to coast a.m. radio stations broadcasting 24/7 right-wing indoctrination, to conservative patriot and alt-right conspiracy theory websites of the last 15 years which disseminate tragic half-truths and whole fake news.

This guy isn't going to win any points for original thinking.

This post is so devoid of anything original or factual -- it's just pure regurgitation of well-known leftist lore and emotion, specifically, hatred and racism -- that one wonders why any journal would bother publishing it.

Here's my idea: because this turgid, empty pile of hatred and racism represents the view of The Hill's editorial staff, and they want this Primal Scream out there, even if it makes no sense.

The alleged silent majority is deafening and easily provoked. They reside in their own echo-chamber bubble of indignation about everything from "New York values" (urban, ethnic rights, LGBT, social justice), to the war on Christmas and Black Lives Matter.

Balls.

They mocked and derided all people's protests from Occupy to #NoDAPL. Their old standbys are opposing a woman’s right to choose, reinstituting school prayer and eradicating "big government." They hate progress. Their idea of American values is straight from circa 1870.

It's a Grand Canyon of absent self-awareness. Check this out:

...

They're delusional in their belief that their views are more important, more valid, more ethical, and more patriotic than any other groups. They claim American Christian values, home, God and country. White values. Any dissenting viewpoints are taken as literal acts of war.

Funny, I know a group that answers precisely to that description.

It's clear cultural fascism.

Like hounding and purging everyone for dissenting from the leftist line?

By the way, you may be wondering, what position does this obvious lunatic hold that would spur The Hill to publish his spittle-drenched hateful rant?

Well, the answer is: None at all. Apparently his credential is that he is a "resident" and "observer:"

Duane Townsend is life-long resident of Detroit, Mich., and an experienced observer of the American social/political landscape.

2 I know there's no completely 100% analogy between the Democratic reaction to 2016 and either of the Republican reactions to 2008 or 2012, but what kind of blame did we throw to LIVs and how long did we take it up?

How long did it take for us to calm down and start focusing on work?

21 It seems to me that after 2012, the establishment got to work pretty quickly on something that they thought would help expand the appeal of the party. Their recommendations (the autopsy) seems to have been pretty much completely wrong based on the results of this election season, but at least there was an attempt. It may have more to do with the establishment using the loss as an excuse to push its preferred policies, but their tone was what I'm interested in.

They were conciliatory and looked like they wanted to help.

Are we seeing that from the DNC? Not now since they're in the middle of a power struggle and their stance afterwards will depend on who takes control (is it wrong of my to root for Ellison?).

Or leading Democratic members of Congress? I'd say not in the least.

I just want to frame the reaction from the Left we're seeing now in more historical terms. Is this normal or not? Is this a sign of coming radicalization or moderation?

The fun of their wails has worn off on me, and I worry about them putting enough together to actually do some damage over the next few years.

I take it this doofus is unaware that world wide whites are in a minority position in Christianity. I take it he is also unaware that many blacks are Christian.
Now lets say the flyover states do live by the values of 1870--so what? How would that connect to the correctness of said values.

Those 1870 values were the values that ended slavery, weren't they?

This isn't even wrong. I mean, if the person writing it hadn't heard it before then, that's a damnation of that person (or proof s/h/it's a Millenial).

Also note that this is from someone from Detroit. When's the last time a Republican was elected to anything in Detroit? Next of never?

I was pondering earlier today that I have a super duper radical idea. Guys, you guuuuyyyssss, I figured it out!

Get this. Different people have different interests and desires and so they, hold on, I'm about to blow your minds here, they have different ideas and priorities than other people and tend to move to areas that best promote those ideas and priorities.

I know, startling, right?

Okay, hold on, tight, this is where I go with some next level shit. So, these different areas in which people gather to promote their own ideas of a life best lived have, seriously, this is groundbreaking, different problems and issues with public safety and public welfare. Thus solutions that work in one area won't work in another and each of those areas have issues that must be taken seriously.

Now here's where we cross the Rubicon.

All these different areas? None of their concerns are more important than the other areas. So. We need some way to be sure that none of those areas dominate the others and try to swamp out their concerns.

Now that your minds are thoroughly blown, I'll fix that problem.

What about a system where each area gets a proportional share of votes and then whomever wins a majority of the aggregate of those votes gets to be in charge of all of the areas? So. Revolutionary. Much. Brilliance.

I'm so smart. I'm just going to go fall up those stairs over there to celebrate.

209 "The more entrenched the flyover voting bloc becomes in their voting habits, the further they fall behind economically, by voting against their own interests..."

Gee willikers, hey've been beating this drum for over decade now, and they STILL DON'T GET IT.

THere was a huge bestseller about ten years ago amongst the NY cognoscenti called "What's the Matter With Kansas?", and the book's entire thesis was that flyover rednecks "vote against their own self-interests" by voting for small government Republicans, which was incomprehensible to the author and his millions of liberal readers. They couldn't understand why the Democrats' dangling of FREE WELFARE BENEFITS for the hillbillies didn't tempt those hillbillies to vote Dem. Rejecting FREE WELFARE BENEFITS was deemed "voting against your own self-interests" and was a sign that there was something deeply wrong with you that a liberal could not decipher.

The entire book was a case study of flamboyant sociological ignorance and hubris. The author could not even visualize the concepts of "self-reliance" and "pride in independence" and the desire for "small government." It does did not compute. And so he asks, "What the FUCK is the matter with you rednecks??? YOU ARE REJECTING OUR WAMPUM! Don't you want some nice shiny beads, Mr. Hillbilly? Look how shiny they are! No strings attached at all!"

212 For the most part, from the 60s until about 2006, the Left completely threw away American traditions and replaced them with things from Europe or places like the USSR.

But they tend this almost completely in their areas - the deep blue urban enclaves that they own.

Starting at the end of the Bush years though the left started acting as a conquering power and enforcing their will on the whole of the country - look at Memories Pizza....

And now they seem shocked that they may no longer get to do so. Which leads me to the point that rather then trying to move back to the past status quo where the left lives as they want and the rest of the country does as well, we need to aggressively give the left a taste of its own medicine...

Because they are for education. And they are democrats.

Therefore, republicans must be anti-education and somehow exerting control over the good people trying their best to teach in Detroit.

" The Occupy movement of 2011-12 was the left's most concerted effort since Seattle in 1999. Any momentum the left may have generated in '99-00 was derailed by the events of September 11, 2001. The country went into an ultra-patriotic, vengeful, war mood. The perfect conditions for the far right-wing politics of xenophobic, flag waving, blood reckoning. The anti-war, political left was silenced, rendered impotent and invisible. To resist was to be labeled an 'unAmerican and a terrorist sympathizer.'"

266 A quick Google of Duane Townsend, Detroit, and up pops a bunch of oddball blogs, etc. that have hosted his left wing rantings.

And one has a photo of him as a spectator at a sporting event. He is a minority.
His bio with the blog contains the following.

" Duane has worked as a Detroit civil servant, football coach, groomed race horses, school bus driver, corporate computer network administrator and I.T instructor; and as a crisis counselor for community mental health"

Duane has an open Facebook page. He isn't happy with anyone. He appears to have been an early Bernie supporter doesn't like the DNC, and his entire Facebook life is nothing but political postings. He agrees that the DNC rigged the election for Hillary. But the majority of his rantings are directed at right wingers, gun nuts and the usual suspected boogiemen that the left mentally employs to comfort themselves.

My guess is he is a discontented Marxist between his bong hits. How does someone like this support themselves?

(yes, I know the answer) We are supporting him.

He also writes numerous articles in which he addresses quantum physics, consciousness, and God. Which he has seen while on his drug fueled trips most likely.

272 Last night I was watching the live streaming of Milo at UW Milwaukee. This little ginger dweeb stood up and started shouting at Milo because of the Leslie Jones twitter episode. He asked Milo why he had said such racist things about her.

Milo replied that he had done no such thing and rehashed the whole thing in detail. Not for one second did the SJW stop screaming and let Milo speak. It was just one constant refrain of "racist, racist, racist." Since he wouldn't shut up, dweeb was escorted out of the room, screaming every second of the way. He undoubtably is proud of how he stood up, a lonely voice, to challenge the "white supremacist."

This guy writes like that guy sounded.

That's why these people cannot be argued or reasoned with. There is literally nothing you can say or do that would change their Narrative except agree with them and heap ashes on your own head. And even that wouldn't be sufficient, since the Left doesn't do forgiveness.

It's like the end of 1984. Winston Smith is tortured until he says 2 plus 2 equals 5, but even the destruction of his mind and integrity isn't enough. A few years ago the left was chortling over a map of the US that showed where people were most overweight.

Ha they said, the Red Staters are all fatties! At least the ones in the South!

Now as we all know, the South, unlike the midwest is very bifurcated. White southerns are overwhelmingly Republicans, black southerners are overwhelmingly Democrats.

Then someone cross referenced the fat map with an ethnographic map of the US that showed in finer detail the fatness of Rs and Ds in the south and now laughing about the fat map was officially rayciss.

The lesson from all this is that liberals are stupid, lazy, and ignorant.

Yes, because a .25% interest rate hike is going to kill the economy.

I heard a radio commenter say that people who have loans, such as home loans, credit cards, and car loans are now going to be feeling this.

Umm, don't know too many people who have adjustable car loans. If they are carrying a balance on credit cards, paying 17.25 % won't be that much worse than paying 17%.

If you have an adjustable mortgage rate, and you didn't learn from just 8 years ago that your rate will go up when interest rates rise, and a .25% is going to put you in foreclosure, you might not have been a good candidate for a house.

Its not going to kill the economy, and we need to raise the interest rates. Its just that this raise is timed (along with likely other moves) to push the economy in a downward direction. There's a reason Yellen waited until December, and it wasn't because the stars didn't align correctly.

425 One thing I find hugely amusing about screeds like this is how "Duane" and others of his ilk seem to have this notion that they, by dint of living in the "appropriate" blue regions of the country are smarter that the rest of the population.

Thing is, during my career I traveled extensively around this country, usually to east and west coast locales, where our "betters" are supposed to reside. Funny thing is, based on MY observations, I noted that most of the people living in these regions are much more likely to be feeders at the public trough, as well as dumber than a box of rocks (see Duane's writing skills as an example). The reality is that it is he and his ideological bedfellows who are in fact the largest users of things like SNAP, Medicaid and other examples of Federal largesse, which we in the flyover states are in fact footing the bill for.

So Duane, you see this Schadenboner? Suck it, bitch. We won. Deal with it.

When 30 year rates hit 15% I'll start to panic. I'm not really trying to be flippant, rather I have lived through rates as high as 17%,. No , rates like that are not good. But just like college tuition, artificially depressed interest rates have helped create another housing bubble (along with Obama's return to requiring minorities and urbanites receive loans beyond their means, because fairness). So we have the makings of yet another crisis because we have social justice running the math in the economy instead of actual mathematicians and actuaries.

Modest rate hikes are a return to reality. Reduced home values will be the result for those who want to sell, but eventually, unless another SJW ends up in the White House and permeating the financial branch of the administration, sanity and reliability might return to the housing and banking sectors.

It's not that Hillary was a drunken (allegedly), felonious (clearly, on the basis of evidence available to the public), lying (also pretty indisputable), scheming (okay, you get this one too) hag.

It's that the Democratic Party is such a craven bunch of ideological thugs that they thought they could ram through a drunken, felonious, lying, scheming hag without having to acknowledge and address any of her failings.

They chased the Bidens and the rest out of the race and stepped on the back of Sanders' shoes to clear the deck for the Beast, and they seem incapable of realizing that sometimes the voters simply will not buy the rancid wormy old crap you're trying to sell.

They are but... they were that low for a reason, and the reason is nearly zero economic growth if not shrinkage and real unemployment over 8% for nine straight years, not to mention 5+ percent inflation.

Without the growth in the economy to eat up the costs of increased debt and encourage investment, higher interest rates = slow economy. And that's the intent here.

477 454 I still believe that the existence of West Virginia established that to some level.

Well, they didn't leave the union, they just formed a separate state. Which I believe is kosher today, providing you can get the momentum and people to go along. Northern California and much of Oregon would like to form a separate state (Sequoiah, among other names suggested) but there's not enough momentum or interest to get it to happen.
Posted by: Christopher R Taylor at December 14, 2016 03:15 PM (39g3+)

=================

It still proved that the people of a political entity within the United States have the right to secede from a larger political entity. Whether that extends to an entire state or to leaving the Union itself is up for grabs academically, I believe.

But still, the irony of the Union allowing secession of one political body while fighting for the prevention of another based on the principle that it can't happen is just too thick to not appreciate on some level.

Same experience here. I traveled for 6 years as an IT consultant at Fortune 50 companies. I spent two years in the New York City/New Jersery areas at Nabisco, Prudential, and American Express. I expected to be working with the best and brightest and thought I would barely be able to keep up. My conclusion from this experience is that the American economy is the biggest miracle in the whole world because those big companies succeeded in spite of themselves. At one of the companies, the lead technical consultant and the employee project lead were doing massive amounts of cocaine, at another company the new dedicated servers would not boot because someone had stolen all the memory chips, and at another, the people whose system was being replaced kept sabotaging the project.

So, in other words, the folks at the center of the universe in NYC are human who are just as fallible and error prone as the heartland.

My point is, a lot of flyover country enriched the coastal elite by way of mutual funds, even as the funds invested in mutli-nationals that sent their jobs overseas. Many still are invested, and (feel) dependent on government propping up markets. So Wall Street took over from Main Street when they started leveraging 300:1, with government giving them "the Greenspan Put", bailing out the too big to fail, too big to jail folks. TARP upped the ante, DC kept spending.

The cocktail party folks hence decided they had become our owners, and that globalizing would be just grand. But there really was some voodoo in the deficit spending of Reagan, and it kept accelerating ... now we are in a pickle.

547 One of my favorite Federalist Papers is about how sovereign individual states could end up fighting each other with their own militias in various squabbles. That's how independent and sovereign the founding fathers envisioned the nation (and why Hamilton wanted stronger federal government to prevent that kind of thing -- why he's my least favorite founder).

It was actually very boring, just interspersed with terrifying bits of reality. I had never seen cocaine use first hand.

I spent a lot of time in NYC walking from the Hilton across from the WTC through all those Customs buildings to the WFC to work at Prudential. It was the whole of September in 1996. So 9/11 hit me hard.

555 @427 So, what happens to the Clinton machine now?

They can still raise boatloads of money, right? Not as much as before, but compared to the rest of the party they're still above the likes of Pelosi, I think.
------------------

Not really. And rumor is that donations to the Clinton Foundation are already down.

The Clintons are no longer going to be in positions of power. They have no more pull. People can feel free to tell off Bill or Hillary, and there's nothing that either of them can do about it. Chelsea might try to go into politics, but she doesn't have her father's charisma.

I strongly suspect that the Clinton machine is finished.

Fold them together. For instance, if you really did do away with the electoral college the logical thing for the small States to do is to join a larger State, effectively ending themselves as a legal entity.

Now: $1,800+/month

I remain completely baffled by the invisibility of this particular - spectacular - disaster ushered in by the ACA. While the insanity varies a bit by state, it cannot be completely out of line with the norm.

And laughable, 35% increases and the like in group plans were white-hot campaign issues and probably helped Teh Donald in November.

583 I came up with some interesting information about the coastal state of Connecticut. Statewide, Hillary got about 4% less of the vote than Obama did in 2012. The poorer the town, the greater was the tendency for Hillary to have a lower percentage of the vote than Obama.

However, there were some towns that had a higher percentage for Hillary than for Obama in 2012. New Caanan and Darien had the highest increases for Hillary versus Obama in 2012: 16.2% and 18.0% respectively. Not coincidentally, Darien and New Caanan had the highest per capita incomes in the state, at $100,824 and $95,577 respectively.

The 10 towns or cities where Hillary fared the worst compared to Obama, where Hillary got an average of 16.8% less than Obama got, had an average per capita income of $28,794. The 10 towns or cities where Hillary fared the best compared to Obama, where Hillary got an average of 11.6% higher than Obama, had an average per capita income of $77,644.
