Trump Expected To Name Critic of Minimum Wage, Workplace Regulations as Secretary of Labor
Update: And He's a Huge Booster of... Amnesty and Dramatically Expanded Replacement Worker Visas

American Thermidor.

President-elect Donald Trump is expected to name fast-food executive Andy Puzder as labor secretary, according to people familiar with the decision.

Mr. Puzder, chief executive of CKE Restaurants Holdings Inc., the parent company of the Carl’s Jr. and Hardee’s burger chains, has been a vocal advocate for cutting back regulations he says have stifled growth in the restaurant industry, which represents 10% of the American workforce.

An adviser and contributor to Mr. Trump’s campaign, Mr. Puzder has criticized the Affordable Care Act and argued against raising the federal minimum wage higher than $9 an hour. Democrats have called for raising the federal minimum wage to as high as $15, alongside union groups that have waged a campaign to push pay floors higher at the state, local and federal levels.

...

Critics were swift to denounce Mr. Puzder as a choice for labor secretary.

"With Mr. Puzder, the fox is in the hen house," said Rep. Rosa DeLauro (D., Conn.), the ranking Democrat on the House subcommittee that oversees funding for the Labor Department. "His nomination represents the greatest assault on workers that we have seen in a generation."

Why you gotta talk so sexy like that when I'm on the job, Rosa?

By the way, as the CEO of the parent company of Carl's, Jr., he's been assailed by feminists for running commercials featuring hot girls in bikinis.

Here's what he had to say about that: Shut up, babies.

The CEO of Carl's Jr. doesn't care if you find the burger chain's racy ads offensive. Well, he cares in one respect – if no one is offended, he's going to convince the marketing department to craft an even sexier commercial next time.

"If you don't complain, I go to the head of marketing and say, 'What's wrong with our ads?'" says Andrew Puzder, CEO of Carl's Jr. and Hardee's parent company CKE Restaurants, describing a conversation with the head of an unnamed organization that regularly protests company marketing. "Those complaints aren't necessarily bad for us. What you look at is, you look at sales. And, our sales go up."

...

"I like our ads. I like beautiful women eating burgers in bikinis. I think it's very American," he says. "I used to hear, brands take on the personality of the CEO. And I rarely thought that was true, but I think this one, in this case, it kind of did take on my personality."

Every parent knows that at some point, you must begin ignoring the Crying Babies so that they learn that Crying will not buy them attention.

Caution Flag: I just saw Mark Krikorian, an immigration critic, write "#NeverPuzder" on Twitter, while one of CATO's Amnesty Forever thugs praised the choice and gloated "Time to roll back visa restrictions," presumably for H1-B's.

I wrote to Krikorian to ask for more information.

Maybe this isn't good at all.

Krikorian: Maybe the Worst Possible Choice. Not liking this now.

Trump’s pick for Labor secretary is perhaps the worst person imaginable for that role: Andrew Puzder, CEO of CKE Restaurants, the parent company of fast-food chains Carl's Jr., Hardee's, and others. He is one of the nation's most outspoken business voices for Gang of Eight-style immigration policies. He didn't just sign an open letter once as a favor to a friend; he's been a high-profile champion of amnesty and huge increases in immigration and guestworkers. This op-ed in Politico, timed to coincide with the launch of the Gang of Eight effort in 2013, could have been written by Jeb Bush. Here he is at AEI in 2013 making the case for importing more low-skilled workers. Here he joins with the Bloomberg-Murdoch Billionaires for Open Borders outfit and Grover Norquist in an effort to "push 2016 presidential candidates and congressional Republican leaders to support immigration reform this year." There's plenty more.

Krikorian provides a link to each statement beginning with "This Op-ed" or "Here here is...," etc. You'll have to go to his piece for those links.

161 Several years ago USDoL was doing "field audits" on growers directly employing agricultural workers locally. They were picking on certain growers and claiming that the workers couldn't pick the levels they were picking at for the pay and forced the employers to pay penalties at what the DoL though should be the actual earnings.

This contradicted the findings by the local office who had for years conducted audits with the growers finding what realistic picking levels were as a baseline

USDoL forced the growers to agree to pay the penalties under the threat of impounding the fruit under the "hot goods" clause, that was developed for textile and sweatshop workers - not perishable fruit.

The growers may have been involved in 9-12 project activities and may have been singled out because of their opposition to TFG's unique approach to legislation and rule making.

Pudzer opposes the minimum wage, and if he favors immigrant workers, AT LEAST it's immigrant workers who are here LEGALLY, as opposed to simply invading.

313 The labor department doesn't, itself, issue the visas. That's the USCIS which is under DHS.

Here is a quote from the DoL website about Foreign Labor:

"There are several government agencies involved with granting permission for foreign workers to work in the United States. First, employers must seek certification through the Department of Labor. Below you will find a link to documents and forms. Once the application is certified/approved, the employer must petition the U.S. Citizen and Immigration Services for a visa. Approval by the Department of Labor does not guarantee a visa issuance. Applicants must also establish that they are admissible to the U.S. under provisions of the Immigration and Nationality Act (INA)."

H1A (ag workers) have stringent controls over living conditions, pay and return, employers are obligated to treat then as under the Migrant Seasonal Agricultural Workers Protection Act. If USDoL decided that H1B workers had to have similar protection that would seriously change that program

That, but the way, would be supported by the more activist workers' rights people - I know this from dealing with them - though maybe not the industries that depend on the H1B visas for workers.

I agree. And creating a more business friendly environment will slacken their calls for more foreign labor. While preventing them from getting more foreign labor will cause them to clamor for more business reform. It can create a feedback loop the other way. The same as lessening outsourcings benefits creates pressure to reform taxes and regulations at home.

RE: Immigration Debate.

I'm fairly strict across the board on immigration policy, but I'm much more concerned with the type that leads to demographics that favor democratic candidates than I am the type that leads to job competition for U.S. Citizens. Flying in a bunch of Ukrainian 20-somethings for the Summer to work the waitress jobs at restaurants in O.C. Maryland doesn't much worry me.

373 Well, I don't like his immigration stance. However, let's not confuse policy positions or interests with suitability for particular jobs. As the Labor Secretary, Puzder will have relatively low levels of influence on the immigration issue, other than a continuing voice in the Cabinet - which, apparently, he would have anyway as Trump clearly likes him and feels he owes him for campaign support.

Rather, his position on unions and minimum wage, areas that will be DIRECTLY under his purview, are far more important. What is Kelly's position on visas? Or the eventual SecState's position? That will matter. It's like being concerned about Puzder's views on Russian foreign policy (no idea what his position might be...) Who cares what the Labor Secretary thinks about that? His position is more related to the immigration issue, granted, but still not what would drive me to worry.

When he got off the phone, he said, "I can't believe it! The dude took a whiz and then flushed the toilet while he was being interviewed. I think he thought I couldn't hear, but the guy was pissing like a racehorse!"

That's how the recount started, faux analysis by experts who later retracted their own published BS when election numbers crunchers destroyed their hacked machine theory. She said it was nicer than where she came from in western Minnesota because the hills and pines killed the wind, unlike her farm in Mn.
However, she did say that just like rural Mn, you had to put in provisioning for the winter, in case you're stuck sheltering in place for weeks on end.

555 There was a book out about a truly horrific blizzard that occurred in North Dakota in the 19th century. The really heartbreaking part I remember is that a bunch of kids in one of those little red schoolhouses tried and failed to make it home on time -and they found the bodies in a circle. The older kids had tried to protect the little ones.

That blizzard was widely reported out East, and movement to North Dakota dwindled down to practically nothing after that, although land was cheap.

Imagine facing those winters without central heating and cars. Hell, I don't know how they did it in Wisconsin.

589 Being of a certain age, John Glenn was a hero to me. As kids, we played astronauts and always fought to see who got to be John Glenn.

As I grew, Glenn went into politics as a democrat. Although I didn't agree with him on policies, I always thought he was an honorable man and someone who truly loved his country.

That all ended with the Thompson Hearings.

When the evidence that the Clintons had been selling missile guidance technology to the Chinese for campaign contributions was crystal clear, John Glenn led the democrats in obstructing and deflecting on every witness.

He sold his soul and good name for another ride in the Space Shuttle.

600 That 19th century blizzard you referenced was probably the Great Blizzard of 1888, which hit almost the entire Plains area all the way down to Texas, and was colder than anything in living memory at that time. It killed so many cattle on the great ranches that many of them went bankrupt, destroying the economic base that had employed so many cowboys in the 1870's through the 1880's.

Many have credited that blizzard, as much as anything else, as being the final blow that killed the Old West. It was 30 years before cattle herds made it back to their former numbers, and by then the world had moved on, as it does.
