Goya (Francisco de Goya y Lucientes)

Goya painted this lovely scene onto one of the walls of his home. I wonder what message he was sending to his kids?

Oh, and Jupiter's mom gave Saturn a rock wrapped in swaddling instead of baby Jupiter, which is how he survived.

"While the scope of the potential investment has not been determined, we will announce the details of any plans following the completion of direct discussions between our leadership and the relevant U.S. officials," Foxconn explained in a statement to Bloomberg. "Those plans would be made based on mutually-agreed terms."

The British government chose to sell her for scrap in 2014, but Illustrious' final journey nonetheless signals the end of an era during a low point for the shrinking Royal Navy. Illustrious was the second Invincible class between HMS Invincible and Ark Royal, scrapped in 2011 and 2013, respectively.

129 Goya had a penchant for the grotesque. Some of them would have been suitable for Lovecraft a couple of centuries later. This one has no redeeming qualities at all. I noted it was not for public viewing. His normal portraits seem stiff, especially for the period. Even the nude 'La Maja' is flawed. The body is actually hot, especially for the tastes of the time, but the face looks like it was pasted on from another painting which is distracting at best. FFS, his self-portrait looks like an image of Dorian Gray's picture. This level of self-loathing and disgust with his world does not make for pleasant viewing.

I don't know why Goya has such a high reputation in the art world. His vision was wasted on the 1800s. He should have been working in the 20th century when portraying angst, despair, and ugliness was often needed to be considered great art.

131 Goya had seen so many thing, and focused on the horrors of his society. He would do sketches of executions and such. He started out as a court painter too, and is known for portraits of the royal family and various dignitaries

He had gone deaf, and isolated himself in his home. Saturn is one of a series of paintings that he did on the walls of his own home and had to have deep meaning to him.

I do love Saturn Devouring his Children, and his various studies of Maja, Maja Reclining and The Dressed Maja.

Goya was a caricaturist, and a lot of his work lacks the photorealism of the Italian and English painters. His caricatures, like the series The Horrors of War and others about injustice in society were not widespread enough to be propaganda, but were more like photo-jouralism.

Some of his work is just knocked off like he was just paying the rent. Others are gorgeous and well done.
I wonder if that reflected on what his feelings were to the subjects, or just how readily the subjects were paying.

Goya lived through one of the most brutal periods of Spanish history. The Spanish fleet was mauled by Nelson at Trafalgar and then overrun by Napoleon's armies in 1808. The French occupation devolved into a horrific, nation-wide civil war, with a Spanish bourgeois elite class siding with the French against the majority of Spaniards. Add the indignity of needing a Protestant English army to restore Catholic Spain and there you find Goya and his work.

Republican leaders managed to derail impeachment of IRS Commissioner John Koskinen on Tuesday, forcing the debate back to a committee for more study, where it will die when Congress adjourns at the end of this year...
Some Republicans sought a lesser penalty, such as censure, while Democrats said the entire impeachment drive was misdirected. Those two sides joined forces Tuesday in a 342-72 vote that sent the debate back to the Judiciary Committee.

226 Ok,,,art thread....

Back to the anniversary of a horrible day.

Last night I posted that on the History Channel today, among the many documentaries about Pearl Harbor is one regarding the scapegoating of Admiral Kimmel.

His family has been trying to get his four star rank reinstated for decades. There is a book out and the History channel will be replaying a documentary done about the code breaking and intelligence the US gov. had prior to Pearl Harbor that through a series of incompetent actions and a failure to "connect the dots"(Gee, I guess we repeated that failure prior to 9/11), no actionable intelligence, warnings, or recommendations were sent to Pearl Harbor's command, Admiral Husband Kimmel before the attack.

Kimmel was stripped of rank, etc. and even though years later, when he was found to be not guilty of dereliction of duty in Congressional hearings, his rank was never restored and his name completely cleared.

There is a petition to have his rank restored. This request has been brought before all the presidents since, I believe, Truman, and was passed by a bipartisian bill in Congress in 2013. It requires the Commander in Chief to restore his rank and none of them have done so, including Obama, even though Congress has requested it and Biden is supportive.

Here is the petition link and links to the book. Documentary will be on tonight. Very detailed, gives day and minute timelines of intelligence coming in and what drawer it ended up in.

How did this happen?

---------------

Republicans have a lot of fear about making waves. Frankly, its why I am somewhat surprised they were able to stave off the Garland nomination. What that episode (and Trump and the fact that the GOP stayed out of voting for Obamacare) should teach them is that they may have less to fear than they think.

That being said, I think there are also plenty of Republicans who aren't necessarily afraid of the fight, but just don't want this to take time away from their new agenda.

But I would love to seen them bring impeachment charges. Even if you can't get a Senate conviction. Have the house bring charges, and have the dems go on record voting against someone who clearly abused the power of the IRS.

This isn't the impeachment of Obama where a lot of people may truly care ... This is an IRS agent.

231 Bluebell, I wouldn't have it on my wall, that's for sure.

A lot of Goya's work focuses on the stupid, venal, self destructive way that his society was destroying itself. The weaknesses of the Spanish society at that time involved sporadic regional revolts - along the Mediterranean shore, Galicia, Catalonia and the friend/ally/subject/competitor/rebel Kingdom of Portugal; it also involved huge economic problems from the giant wealth of the South American colonies disrupting all Spanish economics and markets and industries, and all this weakness gave the French Republic a foot in the door and resulted in the horrors of the Peninsular war.
And you can say what you like about the Spanish but they invented guerrilla warfare specially for the French.

Anyhow, horror on horror, caused by a society eating itself.

Saturn Devouring his Child is not a "ooh pretty" painting. Most of Goya's work that was not portraiture was not pretty work.
Saturn is a warning and a despairing scream of "look what we are doing to ourselves."

Saturn has been driven insane by the horror of what he thinks he must do to preserve himself.

I think it is one of those final summations of a lifetime of painting and thinking on what his lifetime has seen.

258 The emerging GOP plan to repeal Obamacare on a delayed schedule -- and then maybe kinda sorta replace it later -- has raised a big question: Will Democrats help Republicans pass a replacement that is far less generous and comprehensive than the health law is, allowing Republicans an escape from the political fallout from repeal?Senate minority leader Chuck Schumer answered this question with a resounding No. Under no circumstances, he vowed, would Democrats throw Republicans such a political lifeline.

"We're not going to do a replacement," Schumer said of the Senate Democratic caucus. "If they repeal without a replacement, they will own it. Democrats will not then step up to the plate and come up with a half-baked solution that we will partially own. It's all theirs."
