"Drain The Swamp" Sounds Great, But There Will Be Pushback...From Everyone...Maybe Even Trump

I like John Stossel. And here is a good example of his levelheadedness and lack of partisan excitement when it comes to politics and politicians. Drain the Swamp! doesn't tell us anything new, but his perspective is quintessentially conservative.

When you're in Congress, people ask you for money all day. "I need a grant for my charity—we do so much good!" "My business needs a subsidy/protective tariff—we employ so many people—in your state!" So it goes, week after week.

Few people bother to go to Washington to ask for spending cuts. Even though America is heading toward bankruptcy, 90 percent of congressional testimony comes from people who want more stuff.

He asks a fair question: Is Donald Trump going to do what he said he would do? I have no idea, and Trump is keeping us off balance with his usual tactics. And that's okay with me. I would much rather judge him on his actions than his sleight-of-hand with the media. However, as Stossel says:

But it's easier to believe Thomas Jefferson who, with greater eloquence, said, "It's the natural progress of things for government to gain ground, and liberty to yield."

9 Gov't will always gain ground, the question is how much for each administration. Trump, in my young (29 year old) estimation, will be dead set against growth, or completely for it to complete anything with the Democrats pushing him.

Trump does not have the power of a dictator. Much of what his administration accomplishes, or doesn't, depend on McConnell, Ryan, and the SCOTUS. It's really hard to get people, and organizations, to get off their dead ass.

I think you're worrying unnecessarily about this.

1) Trump's gotta be used to dealing with this shit.

2) Politicians are assholes acclimatized to giving away our money, and are numb by now to the fact that they have NO skin in the game, because as Thatcher said, it's O.P.M. Trump is not cut from that cloth, so there's a good chance his instincts will cause him to wince at that.

23 When you're in Congress, people ask you for money all day. "I need a grant for my charity - we do so much good!"

Fuck you. If you did that much good, people would pony up willingly.

"My business needs a subsidy/protective tariff—we employ so many people—in your state!" So it goes, week after week.

Fuck you. If you were economically viable, you wouldn't need a subsidy.

If you can't make it on your own you ... can't make it.

Hey, I can't outrun an MLB prospect in the 60 yard dash. Can I start on the 45 yard line? (Maybe make it the 30 yard line?)

The race is to the swift. Those who are not swift are ... what's that word? Oh yeah. Losers. At least in the respect at issue.

43 I attended a seminar-ish kind of thing back in college 25 years ago entitled "Government as the Enemy".

The title, as you might imagine, was misleading, as the conversation why people incorrectly mistrusted government and where the misconception came from.

Feeling like I got bait and switched, I still suffered through it. One thing that stood out back then in the conversation was that while people in general had a negative approval rating of generic "Congress", they all had favorable views of "their congressman".

It was pointed out that people were opposed to wasteful spending, but that no one thought the federal government spending in their state was wasteful or superfluous.

We vote for them because the promise to bring home the bacon and no one gets re-elected on the platform of "I cut the federal funding to our state by 20% last year!"

And Stossel is right - to some extent, all Congress critters, be they House or Senate, go native once they get here. Things have been done a certain way for a long, long time. It will take time to change, for sure.

And of course it's hard to tell people they can't have the money they used to get. Very hard.

I think (hope) that Trump, not being a politician himself, will be able to see this with clearer eyes than most who would be in his position.

Also the more money people make the more they spend on unnecessary things but things they want. But it's a problem that - as indicated by the post quotes and what we all know - arises from the grass-roots itself, from the character (lack thereof) of the populace.

So fixing it is daunting.

Meanwhile, selected other problems (mass illegal migration, immigration lawlessness, regulatory suffocation, etc.) are actually fairly simple. And easy, by historical standards, to solve.

And he DID run, specifically, on those things. So there we are.

If he makes major progress on a few big issues, it's more than I would have expected from the mashed-potato sandwich GOP field apart from him, and we don't even need to talk about if She had won.

Sad thing is, even if he/they manage to unshackle the US economy a bit, allow growth to return (note my verbs), there is near zero chance there will be any fiscal progress. Soaring revenues would be allowed to reduce deficits. Reducing scope and resources of guvamint very unlikely to even be on anyone's lips in the Beltway.

Question regarding Trump's bankruptcies. Were they personal bankruptcies or business bankruptcies? They're two totally different things. Business bankruptcy is a rather common affair, and for good or ill, it's generally considered to be a legit business strategy in certain situations. Plus, it also depends on the type of bankruptcy (Chap 11 or Chap 7).

And on a larger note, a lot of us reluctant Trump types were saying that if we are lucky enough to get 10% of what we want from the Magic Scalp Weasel, that qualifies as a win. I see no reason to alter that view.

By the way, I love this place. I have no military background, but I don't feel like an outsider. I lurk much more than I post, but that's because every thread is a full tapestry by the time I get to it. Wish I could remember when I started, and why.

Boy this is such a happy place these days. Feels good.

Have a good weekend, Horde! It's Bedlam tomorrow!

P.S. Still trying to get in touch with C.R. Taylor.

172 I just a piece by Michael Barone, the guy who can tell you a bunch of facts from rote about any random congressional district you name, in the whole damn US. And who always looks like his dog just died.

Anyway, he concludes that no other Republican would've won, at least like Trump did. Other Rs would've have done better amongst the smart-set crowd of GOPers, but they wouldn't have breached the blue wall like Trump did.

So, remember all that shit about Trump being poison and unelectable? Hell, he may have been the only electable one of the bunch.

Which sucks. Why does Athens have to get shut out?

Interesting tid bit. Boulder has over 150'000 tickets sold a year at least for shows between the Fox and The Boulder Theater. Athens has 15,000 tops between the GA Theater and the 40 Watt.

It's a complete failure by the city of Athens to not bring in Music.

174 American Be Advised:

Trump is going to zag as often as he zigs, from left to right and all points in between. He has more or less created a third national party, and it will likely imo not adhere orthodoxically to either the Elephant or the Donkey.

Plan accordingly.

There hasn't been a trustworthy State Department since at least the Hoover Administration.

182 No-one is going to fix the fiscal mess. It would take a true crash -- something akin to an actual national bankruptcy to force those kinds of changes, and even then, you're more likely to explicit government by robbery/confiscation than actual reductions to welfare/middle class entitlements.

We'll get there, one day. Because no-one has the power to stop the reckoning. But we're not draining that swamp anytime soon.

That's some sadistic psychotic gaslighting going on.

184 I think "drain the swamp" talks mor about removing corrupt or sluggish politicians, as opposed to ideological cutting of government. At this point I'll take it, especially if the Clinton family takes it in the teeth. I actually think Trump will love taking time to mount inquiries, such as working 43 over a la Chilcot. We can only see- but if our dynasties think Trump is even a quarter as vengeful as claimed, they need to look into new Qatari addresses...

185 But it's easier to believe Thomas Jefferson who, with greater eloquence,
said, "It's the natural progress of things for government to gain
ground, and liberty to yield."

===========

I also said something about the Tree Of Liberty needing refreshing from time to time ...
