Old Rich White People's Party Continues Losing Tradition

Pelosi may be a fine parliamentarian, and she certainly wields the whip effectively, but if the Democrat Party thinks that she is just the woman to lead them to the promised land of election success, they are deluded. Pelosi holds onto leadership

House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) on Wednesday fended off a challenge to her long leadership reign, defeating Rep. Tim Ryan (D-Ohio) in a closed-door vote prompted largely by Donald Trump’s unlikely ascension to the White House.

Pelosi got 134 votes to Ryan's 63 — winning 68 percent of the votes after declaring before the election that she had the support of two-thirds of the caucus. The victory sends a message that while there's a growing appetite for major changes in the party's leadership structure and messaging tactics, it's not strong enough to loosen Pelosi's grip on a liberal-heavy group that's rarely challenged her authority.

She is a San Francisco millionaire whose husband is a rent-seeking businessman. She is completely out of touch with the electorate, but has remained in power because she is completely in touch with inside-the-beltway money and influence. If Trump's victory taught them nothing else, it should have taught them that after many years of status quo leading to our current mess, voters sort of like change, even when that change is Trump.

10 You can argue that Nancy has been more influential over the last ten years than Obama.

She had a bigger hand in drafting Obamacare, and along with Harry Reid, pushed it through.

She's had enormous influence over the budget in the last eight years, and turned Obama's Stimulus into Porkulus, so that the money wouldn't go to burly men jobs that might actually build something. Because we haven't had a real budget, we've repeated this horrendous mistake every year since, which is why we've never had a recovery.

Nancy's hubby was junior partner to Bill Hambrecht, and so for decades Nancy has been able to tap into Bay Area tech billionaire moguls for donations. This has made the D party beholden to the interests of a narrow faction of the elite.

And she's still in power. Power of the purse, baby!

46 "She is completely out of touch with the electorate, but has remained in power because she is completely in touch with inside-the-beltway money and influence."

As Ignoramus points out above, the money with which Pelosi is in touch is primarily SF Bay Area technoligarch cash.

Consider this in that context: Trump's going to be under the gun to come up with ways to pay for his intended massive "infrastructure" spending. (Note that only GOP presidents actually are asked where the money is coming from for their programs. Obama never had to answer that question about the porkulus or about Obamacare.)

Trump could do quite well by sharply hiking taxes and closing loopholes on Silicon Valley's arrogant elite. Matched by similar measures against Hollyweird and Wall Street.

Trump can justify all of this as having those one-percenters "pay their fair share". Take the language, phrasing, and framing of the left, and cynically co-opt it against them.

86 Well this is certainly a good strategy to boost the donks vote totals and margins of victory in big liberal cities.

Problem for that is of course our election system which makes it so they only solidify their holds on liberal districts while losing more seats in Congress and presidential contests. Must be why they want to kill the Electoral College now, but who gives a shit, donks are practically extinct on the state level in addition to being a fading minority in Congress. EC is going nowhere.

OT but somewhat related: I was thinking, is it actually possible for Trump to lose reelection in four years? The media spent the last year shrieking that they guy is LITERALLY WORSE THAN HITLER and he still beat the shit out of Hillary. Say the donks throw out some no-name empty suit (and they kinda have to, who do they have?) who by default is a vastly superior candidate to Hillary Clinton, and Trump just gases a few million Mexicans and Muslims and electrocutes all the gays, close election?

Going off memory, the Mauser-patented parts of the 1903 Springfield were licensed, not a fine paid for infringement. I don't think the license fees were paid during WWI though. The formula for Aspirin was taken from Bayer and made public as part of the war reparations afterwards, so paying Mauser for the '03 patents during WWI wouldn't make much sense.

I'm fairly certain about the aspirin one, but don't take my word for the Springfield bit. I know there were Mauser patents licensed, but not if the fees were paid during the war.

The M1 rifle used through most of WWII was developed by a Canadian working in the US; I don't think any licenses were needed for that one unless Mauser had a patent on rimless rifle cartridges.

260 One of my recollections of the fashion trends of the late 60's and 70's is that discomfort was involved. There were NO HATS, no matter the weather. Blouses, even some men's shirts, were short, to show a little sexy midriff. In the middle of the winter. Polyester, 'nuff said: hot, sweaty, cold, breezy, all in one. Shoes you couldn't walk in. And most things were either Toulouse or too tight. It was a way of signalling what you'd give up for Fashion.

241 Dunno, Weasel, I have a couple of 90+ yr-old Mosins, the bores aren't that bad. Rifling seems perfect and strong, the "darkness" varies - one's almost shiny. All seem to shoot just fine.
I've been doing some electronic bore cleaning, but the return seems marginal, so I'll probably revert to aggressive conventional cleaning (incl. when hot, at the range). Sort of an OCD thing anyway. They shoot fine, mirror-like bore won't give me any more value.

The 1917 Enfield I mentioned has the original barrel (191 and it almost doesn't look like steel and rifling inside anymore. Oddly enough, it's not a terrible shooter even in this condition but I think I will send it to the CMP at Anniston and have a new barrel put on.

Posted by: CaliGirl at November 30, 2016 08:52 PM (Q5Ymk)

330 garrett I have a personal rule that's getting more difficult to follow.

When selecting a winery to visit, or while at one, any use of the word "sustainable" means "abort" on that place and their wines. "Bio-dynamic" is in a gray area.

It's getting harder, as I say, as everyone (we're talking either central coast or Sonoma in CA) is now absorbed by the Borg, and at least mouths the stupid cult signaling words, whatever their actual beliefs.

And yes I understand that in ag there are "sustainable" vs. other sorts of practices - using the word in its actual, former sense. But in the wine biz I'm fairly sure it's almost entirely the new, empty and misleading sense that's intended.

At one place I tortured a nice young tasting room person by wondering aloud how the concept of sustainability applied to wine-making and viticulture, as some of the oldest known human activities involved wine-making, going back to ancient Mesopotamia. Poor thing didn't know that to say, or think, more to the point.

369 When selecting a winery to visit, or while at one, any use of the word "sustainable" means "abort" on that place and their wines.
Posted by: rhomboid at November 30, 2016 08:52 PM (QDnY+)

Liberals, like retards generally, are the source of considerable entertainment. Have you ever noticed that the only sustainability they never mention is financial sustainability?

A sweet young thing called me asking for donations for the College of Chemistry at Berkeley. I had her on the phone for an HOUR, but it was the intellectual equivalent of Mike Tyson v. Pee Wee Herman.

At one point I told her Berkeley had plenty of money, it just wasted a lot of it on bullshit departments. I offered to fix their budgetary problems if they'd give me a clipboard, a sheaf of pink slips, and directions to the Grievance Studies departments.

She agreed with me, but then added, "But many of those departments are very popular."

"C'mon, sweetheart, if there were a department of beer drinking, THAT would be popular too, wouldn't it? The measure of a department is probably inversely correlated with its popularity."

A long silence ensued.

Oddly, wineries that are biodynamic are probably more likely to be good, because if they're going to do all that fiddly mystical crap, they probably have enough energy, and are paying enough attention, to do the important stuff thoroughly and well.

Last time I was up your way in early October I relaxed my policy (was a two-couple joint trip), though I didn't cease to mock the nonsense once we had left someplace. Don't recall any notable offenders.

The very nice couple that runs Ampelos poured for us at their tasting room in the ghetto in Lompoc. I cringed inwardly when the wife said something bio/sustainable/green-bullshitish, but of course showed no external reaction.

I read the biodiversity article. Conventional Ag is superior. Higher yields on less ground.
Better seed, irrigation, everything has gotten better.
Maybe I'll go bury some stinging nettle and oak in an animal skull and my yields will be higher.

The guy at Ampelos is a good winemaker but they are in to that green stuff.
When you spray herbicide in the grapes they are dormant. It doesn't hurt anything. Or you can pay people to go weed by hand which makes your cost per ton astronomically higher.
Conventional is more efficient, but you wouldn't get to tell your customers that you are sustainably organic.

565 When you start losing hair on top, it's a lot easier if you've been getting #2 clipper cuts tapered up for the last 20 years. You get to rock the Ed Harris thing, and it doesn't look at all out of place.

The alternative, I guess, is growing it out on the sides and combing it up, but you aren't fooling anyone. You look like a tonsured monk who's had a shower drain trap dumped on his head. Grow a weedy little mustache if you want to complete the sweaty pedo costume.

Basic hygiene and grooming aside, look your age. Trying to hide it is uncanny valley stuff.

566 531 Plus, it's not just women dying their hair. It was widely believed that Ronald Reagan was dying his hair.

Ummm...yeah.

I believe it. With how heavily controlled and staged all of her appearances are they would not allow running cameras back stage around her. I think the press protects her more than they protected FDR.

Very few women have that beautiful silvery color. They ones that do are very fortunate because most ofd the others just get blah-greyish with hair, but if you maintain a nice hair style it doesn't look bad,

No. I don't doubt. I think it's pretty obvious all politicians dye.

Sorry if I didn't make myself clear.

And yes..Ike was bald. Also I think there was one or two more.....

575 Buzzion, agreed.

There's probably no video of Hillary losing it on Election night, but my hunch is that a *lot* of really horrific stuff will come out about her, both video and otherwise... after she's dead and buried.

I think it culminates w/Priss' death scene in Bladerunner. Only Hillary looks slightly different than Daryl Hannah:

I remember when it was $19.99. Any car, any color. Well, almost.

580 I quit coloring my hair when I turned 55. It's going gray at a steady rate. It's also just past my waist in length. It's still thick and I get compliments on it regularly.
You can always tell what year a woman graduated high school by her hair style.

581 Speaking of Hillary's (non)victory, has the story been confirmed about the destruction of the inner sanctum on (non)election night been confirmed? the story I heard was a 156", $100K+ultra-high-def T.V., that was a gift from some Saudi, got taken out by a flying bottle of $900 champagne. Good lord, to be a fly on the wall that night.

Posted by: Grey Fox at November 30, 2016 09:52 PM

About 20 I think. I missed the start of this and ain't going back, assume it's about men dying hair?

I'll admit I do so, but it's not to impress anyone else w/ my youth. I consider it a mental/physical health issue.

When I get my aching old bag of bones out of bed in the morn, I need to see some dude that isn't completely grey in the mirror, at age 61.

Hopefully will get the back issues addressed next yr w/ new, better insurance, then not so achy.

He wears a lot of bolo ties and for a while a wore western hats.

Dylan would have made a good Texan.

Always been a #1 man, myself. Light has to hit me at the right angle for the silver to show good with a fresh haircut. Used to be dishwater blond.

Mom (a blond) said she was turning platinum, not gray. Heh.

Also John Quincy Adams. I think he's unfairly missed as a great man. After his presidency he served as a representative from MA.

Diligently anti-slavery. He earlier defended the slave revolt on a ship, I'm drawing a blank on the name but it was made into a movie.

588 I looked up biodynamic on Wikipedia, figuring it was as good a place as any. One should never underestimate the ability of liberals to be "the party of science," as long you define "science" to be crazy superstition, astrology, and magic.

Growers who want the official biodynamic seal of approval must be certified annually by Demeter International. It's worth it to visit Demeter's site just to see the cray-cray.
