Overnight Open Thread (26 Nov 2016)

I'm pretty dismayed at how many folks and organizations ignore the truths about Fidel Castro. Even ESPN can't avoid bowing to a dictator and ignore history.

Thousands of Cubans fled Castro's rule, often via very dangerous and risky means, and yet liberal progressives tell us that Trump is the second coming of Hitler and they can't be bothered to leave as they promised before the election? Yeah, its pretty obvious based on actions or non-actions which one is the more dangerous one.

Strange News

Radiation expert who investigated the 'assassination' of KGB spy Litvinenko 'killed himself by stabbing his arms and chest repeatedly'. Suicide with two knives? Seriously?

The Economy

Well duh! Blue-collar Democrats to party: It's still the economy, stupid.

"I didn't feel like Clinton really cared about us," said Murray, a personal service industry worker. "We are still hurting here. I feel as if we haven't recovered from the economic free fall. Clinton seemed like just another four years of what Obama has done for my area, which is four years of nothing."

Well, Clinton only wanted your vote and if you weren't a donor to the Clinton Foundation she didn't give a shit about you. Also, it wasn't four years of nothing with Obama, it was eight.

Flying Vid

SPEC OPS

Better late than never I guess. Obama administration expands elite military unit's power to hunt foreign fighters globally.

Unwanted Calls/Texts

Stop unwanted calls and texts from hitting your cellphone. Didn't know they had apps to stop telemarketers.

Starship Troopers

6 reasons why 'Starship Troopers' is the new 'The Art Of War'. I actually haven't read that book yet.

Hidden Animals

Humans might have evolved to spot an animal hidden in these pictures.

Recount

Interesting development. Obama administration official shoots holes in Clinton, Stein campaign recount effort.

Bad Luck

It's bad enough to be involved in a plane crash. It is worse when you crash in remote mountains, you lose your cell phone, the emergency radio battery is dead, both of your feet are broken, temps are approaching freezing, and your instructor didn't file a flight plan so potential rescuers won't have a clue where to find you.

"Too bad my father didn't get to see this day. I remember him being dragged out in the middle of the night to work the fields for months at a time. He would come back skin and bones. He would tell me stories of how they were beaten, not fed anything and how he thought of his family. We were able to get out as political refugees in October of 1971. God bless America."

I wasn't in the mood for bloody violence, I wanted something goofy, funny and ridiculous. So I watched Zorro the Gay Blade! I laugh my ass off at that movie, every time. It was released in 1981 features a social justice warrior who is trying to start a revolution, evil government hack, a good hearted thief, and a football bat. Oh and there's the disabled guy. All the usual victims present and accounted for but still hilarious. This movie was ahead of its time!

Very interesting. I never quite bought into the "Obama/Clinton" feud thing. The left always manages to put aside their differences and march in lockstep when it counts (a la Bernie). There was a video on an ONT some time back about a tree that has been found that is the very last of its species. It was one of those that has male and female trees and its a male and they cannot find a female tree of it.

Trees that can pollinate themselves can also pollinate others as well.

At this time of Adolf Hitler's passing, we extend a hand of friendship to the German people. We know that this moment fills Germans- in Germany and in the United States - with powerful emotions, recalling the countless ways in which Adolf Hitler altered the course of individual lives, families, and of the Germannation. History will record and judge the enormous impact of this singular figure on the people and world around him.

232 Best comment from ESPN article:

You wouldn't believe how much Hitler changed the Olympics. The torch relay was first introduced in Berlin and it was also the first time the Olympics was covered live. The venues were also bigger and better than ever before. The German people were really suffering and much had to do with World War 1. Hitler really brought about a sense of pride for the nation and their dominant performance in the Olympics enhanced it. Hitler dug the nation out of a hole and the world witnessed it's strength. With rumors of a ban on Jewish related products some chose to leave everything behind and search of a better life so they could support heir families. I give Hitler credit as his revolutionary ideas and policies really turned the country around.

284 By himself, Fidel Castro is not the problem. It is the fanatical army of loyal followers behind him that will carry out any order given to them.

It isn't the guy at the top of the power pyramid you have to fear, it is the guy in the next cubical, the guy in the corner office, or the district manager who will inform on you to keep their jobs.

Think about that the next time you look at voting results. Sixty million people voted for Hillary. Some number of which would happily drive the buses that take you to the ovens. Think about those obnoxious tweets from the left who want you dead. They are not joking. They are just too cowardly to do it themselves and they hope that some lone nutcase will do it for them.

The political opposition to Castro was disorganized and infiltrated by spies and informants. Informants who spied on their neighbors.

Half the voters in this country are the enemy. They are your friends, your family, your neighbors, and the people you work with. Some of them will turn you in for your own good, so you can get proper treatment for your delusions. Others just hate you because they have been programed to do so, and because you are in their way, and they want you gone.

369 "Fidel oppressed and killed like a neighborhood thug...sticks and guns stuff."

Castro wanted to launch the nuclear-tipped Soviet MRBMs which had been covertly installed in Cuba into the continental U.S. interior. And Castro would have, if he had only possessed the launch codes. Khrushchev had prudently held them back.

Somewhere between fifteen and forty million Americans would have died as a result.

Bill Clinton and Ted Kennedy were at a diner near D.C.

Waitress: What will you gentlemen be having today?

Clinton: I'll have one of those quickies.

Kennedy : Uh, Bill. It's a 'quiche' - it's like an egg pie.

Clinton: Oh. I'll just have the bacon & eggs.

"You mean things like no countries, no religion, no possesions, no heaven, and only the sky above, Race?"

"Yes, Johnny. But also things like the no hell, nothing to kill or die for, and no greed or hunger. Imagine all these things, they say, and human existence becomes a brotherhood of Man, living life in peace, for today only, and sharing everything in the world."

"But what do you do when too many people want to share something at the same time, Race, and there isn't enough of that something to go around?"

"Like seats into Game Seven of the World Series, Johnny?"

"Exactly, Race."

"You camp out in line the night before, Johnny."

"But that's living for tomorrow, not today, Race."

"You got it Johnny! That's why you bring along your umbrella in case it rains and your gun in case the Socialists in line figure out things aren't going their way!"

Half the voters in this country are the enemy. They are your friends, your family, your neighbors, and the people you work with. If only fallin/kicked into/tried to jump over was the problem......."stop,drop, and roll" is still taught round here...heh.

The high octane tickles the creative section, in addition to the stupid/brave, "good idea at the time" part of the brain......

So "sword fightin" with 10ft branches that are a third on fire sounds fun. (I'm imbidin the octane too, so I can see their point....be wicked cool visuals, etc...)

But that shit is playin with fire....literally. So, no-go.

Now....drag racin thru the mudhole in CanAms.....perfectly good fun. 5 point safety features mitigate octane much more effectively.

454 Interesting factoid - the first time I ever heard of George Soros was during the great run on the Swedish crown. Rates went as high as 500% for a few days as they tried to defend the value. This was back in 1992, I believe. We had a variable-rate mortgage and we were shitting bricks.

George Soros has been a bad dude in my panoply of bad guys for 24 years. You can imagine my shock when I found out my oldest friend's brother worked for him before we went "dark" and got out of the lines of business requiring oversight.

462 Let's not forget the Cuban exiles celebrating in Florida.

In 2000, they were the reason GWB was elected instead of Al Gore, Jr because of Elian Gonzalez.

In 2016, they rejected Hillary! because of "Wet foot, dry foot" implemented in 1994 by Billy Jeff in hopes of normalizing relations with Cuba. It was a change in policy of the US, before that, any Cuban found in US territorial waters was brought to the US and given a chance at becoming a citizen. After the policy, the Cubans could only get on that path if they made it to US dry soil. If they were intercepted at sea, they were sent back to Cuba.

Funny how the Dems use every possible resource to send Cubans back but won't do shit for the border with Mexico.

507 Farmer, an eight second ride basically refers to bull riding. If you can keep your seat for eight seconds, you're doing great. I used to do a bit of riding in my younger days right up until I got bucked off one time and broke my tail bone. Couldn't sit down for about six weeks. That's when I decided I was too old for that stuff. I had a younger friend that got beat up real bad. They removed his spleen, his liver was lacerated, and he had six broken ribs, one of which punctured his lung. He never rode again.

Which makes since because Akira Kurisowa was HEAVILY influenced by John Ford westerns as well as pulp novels. Yojimbo was actually adapted from a Dashell Hammet novel, Red Harvest, which had a prohibition era mob setting. The same basic story but three different settings.

I glue the cloth onto the boards with either a paste or white glue, and use a heavier paper for the end papers. I also have this batch of calf-skin to do the spines on when I want to do something more substantial feeling

I found a couple of yards of this lovely material for the cover cloth, and I buy odd-end fabric also at garage sales and flea markets.

My goal is to make commercial grade journals. Once I do that I can start playing with actual books.

I tend to be obsessive about hobbies, especially fiddly stuff like this. I use mostly salvaged stuff since the cost of new material is high. I think I can get thicker material from pallet slip sheets, but I have to go hit up the local grocery store. Used three ring binders are about a buck at the thrift store.

I have been doing a modified Coptic type stiching, but I am looking at making a loom set-up to do standard binding instead. I am not sure there is much difference at this point, but I am told it makes for better consistancy.

My next project is to try to make a book press out of an old swivel chair. I may cheat and make it out of an old Honda jack instead, but I do need to make some sort of press since I otherwise have to stack piles of books up to keep the covers from curling while they dry.

Right now, I give mine away as gifts, and I have a friend who is a counselor who gives some of them to her patients as journals. She says they seem to go over better than the slicker commercial ones.

I've made two friends in the past six months who have told me I'm very funny. i don't really think of myself that way, but the people who told me are generally very serious people so maybe anything is funny to them

Yep.
I think Prager is helpful with that. I've picked up a lot of good tips just from occasional happiness hours over a few years. I've thought about buying his book, Happiness Is a Serious Problem.
As Kalneva mentioned, he also has a collection of happiness hours for those who would rather listen than read.

It's not that he has a magic formula or anything. But I think he puts a lot of things into better focus.

The majority of mine are just pamphlet stitching, straight through the spine, and sometimes I get a little fancy and add beadwork to the threads on the outside of the spine, but that's about as detailed as I get.

I have no real desire to make actual books, and let me tell you, making a press out of an old office chair is NOT in my skillset!

615 But I do think the ability to laugh at things is part of what makes people happy. Some writer said that he helped cure himself of cancer by watching funny movies, but of course that's a symptom of depression-not finding things funny.

The Orthodox priest thinks I'm funny, andt I wouldn't use the word "f'ing" around him, but i expect having been a military chaplain for 25 years he's probably heard that word before. :^) And yes, my typos are amusing but I can't really take credit for all of them. 627 Oh Newegg just pissed me off. I ordered something today and did it from the mobile app because of a $5 discount. Of course for some reason back when I changed my address on the website after I moved it didn't update it to the mobile app, because hey why would it?

So it was in ship status and properly charged but the address was to my old apartment. I sit in the chat room waiting for over an hour for a Customer Service Rep to ask if they can fix it, since it hasn't yet shipped and is still in "Packaging" mode.

"Oh I'm sorry I can't, all I can do is cancel the order and it will take 3-5 business days for the cost to be credited back to your payment method."

So I went off about how the mobile app doesn't update with the website address change and even though it isn't yet shipped you can't fix the error? Yeah cancel it and I'm going to reconsider ever buying from you again.

Oh boy did that get a different response. "I'm sorry let me see if I can fix it on our end. I appreciate your patience I have changed your address successfully for you."

Too bad you didn't do that the first time I asked, then you wouldn't have pissed me off, and gotten the threat of losing a customer.

629 Chi, I was close not too long ago. I had the front eleven strikes and when I got up and threw the twelfth, I let my wrist break back, fluffed it out there, and I knew as soon as I let it go, it wouldn't get to the pocket. Sure enough, I left the 1,2,8, 10 washout. 296 score. But it was my best game ever. My hands were shaking on the last shot. A lot of tension.

630 Tammy, I am not sure making a book press out of an old office chair is within my skillset either, but Ima-gonna try.

I started out doing the Japanese binding, the Stab-Binding type of binding. That might fit your needs better by the way, since you don't have to use signatures and can assemble a stack of varied pages or materials.

I have also tried gluing the pages together, both with just glue and with staples stabilizing the stack of pages, but I keep coming back to sewing the signatures together.

I spent a month once picking up books and inspecting them to look at how they were made. My GF at the time started to wonder if I was having issues.

640 Fenelon, the United States Bowling Congress holds two tournaments per year. One is the Open Tournament, this year being held at South Point Casino in Las Vegas, and the Women's Tournament being held in Baton Rouge, LA. The Open Tournament is open to all bowlers who are USBC members, men and women. The Women's Tournament is only open to women, or those who identify as women *spit*. There is no strictly Men's Tournament because of Title IX. So, every year, I follow Linda to the Women's Tournament to cheer her on, and she bowls in the Open Tournament. If we bowl well, we get a check from the prize fund. If we don't, well, there's always next year in a different city.

Those no good muthafuckers who call unsolicited......

Fair game.

Challenge is to frustrate them to the point that THEY put you on the never call list......

My favorite was a "company" sellin GE home security systems....talked to this guy for 15mins....reached the payment stage an I said,

"Now, will this 120v system just incapacitate or will it kill em?....Cause I don't want it if it just incapacitates em.....?"

Him:, "Sir, this a General Electric security system, it senses intrusions into your home an alerts the authorities."

Me:"Does it kill em? Or just knock em out?

Him: "Sir, it's an alarm system that notifies you and the authorities of a break in...."

Me: "Wait a minute, you said General Electric, and that my doors and windows would be electrified. What the fuck?!? I don't want sensors, I want to fry any muthafucker that tries to break into to my house. Y'all are General Electric right?....Y'all sell electrified home security systems so how many volts pass into the intruders? Is it like an electrified fence or a Taser?"

Him: "Sir, it's a standard home security system, and..."

Me: "Well if it ain't gonna kill em....then I don't want it." Repeated as needed.......
Until He said, "Sorry to bother you Sir, have a good day".

Never called again....

Those with a line to Endor....good thread potential, "Best fuckin with a telemarketer story"....be a good filler idea if Nothin else....
In my massively drunk opinion...IMMDO.....

Some recount news. Michigan has already counted its votes twice. Stein can request a recount but if I understand the Mi law correctly, the Mi SoS doesn't have to allow it. If not, Steins only recourse is go to court where sge has to prove fraud of some kind

Pennsylvania is a different story. No recount is possible. She has to go to court and prove fraud to get a recount.

I'm good. I got to see the family and Best Grandkids Ever on Thursday. Would have stayed an extra day, but I had to be back at work on Friday (ah, broadcasting!).

I found out that my daughter and most of her millenial friends that I know...voted for Trump. I was pleasntly surprised, really. One of them, a gay man, said it was my debunking of the "Trump wants to kill gays" lie on Facebook that helped him change his mind.

Tonight was fun, too: Karaoke Roulette at the club. The bartender chose some songs for the regulars to sing, and we didn't know what they were until we went to the stage. I ended up with "Final Countdown", "Come On Eileen", and "Mexican Radio". Somehow I got all the 80s oddities.

You did good.

But the conversion is really nice to hear. I can't say I convinced anyone, but I found out today that my older lady (70ish) friend that I've know for 30 years voted for Trump.
