When it was time for the dog to be put down, he went for a last walk with Walnut on the beach, and several thousand people showed up with their dogs to accompany him. Touching in a good way. Celebrating his life with Walnut.

I am thankful that after that 18 inches of snow buried my drive, that my Ariens cleared it right out without a hiccup.
I am equally thankful that I was able to fix the problem the very next day that same machine refused to run when I went out to clean up the mess the snowplow left in my drive when the county pushed the snowbanks back. So when this machine refused to run, I, like, totally, freaked, man. Thought it was bad gas. Something broke in the carburetor, plugged fuel line.
I had read somewhere that you need to check the oil and water, and pay attention to the blinking warning indicators on the dash (check engine light). So I checked the oil, and it was at the 'add' mark, but I was prepared for that because I was planning on changing the oil anyway. So I did that, and the machine ran perfectly fine after that.
Who knew that a small engine like that had a low oil sensor? The things you learn from machines.

Interestingly, if it is only sex, it is allowed in almost all the states. But when it comes to marriage, then most states say no. And, as you point out, it is the South and Midwest where it is banned, while the Northeast and the West Coast are ok with it.

When you saw the polls, that was probably him being generous to Trump.
I think this time around he didnt have the internal polling like he got in 08 and 12 that he got from the Obama campaign. I dont think Ttrump was doing much internal polling, and the Clinton camp didnt want to release the internals to him because it would have taken away her aura of invincibility.

Walnut lived to be 18 and was well-loved. I found it touching, not depressing. Putting an old pet who is suffering to sleep is very difficult but calling it "canine euthanasia" kinda trivializes human euthanasia.

We lost our old girl last year, a gorgeous Groenendahl Belgian Sheepdog, prettiest sweetest thing ever, her littermate won best of breed at Westminster, but she was undersized so the breeders sold her after they had done their litter pick. Every time we see a good looking dog we see if the owner is willing to chat, and we pet, we hug, and we think, should we do it again.
So tonight we are doing a search to see if someone has a pretty little Landseer puppy within a thousand miles. We cannot get another Belgian because we think anything other than the one we had could not be as pretty, as well-behaved, as perfect.

I am thankful that my Chappaqua is sufficiently set back that I don't have to deal with the common people I care so much about.

I think one of the great lessons of 2016 is, "polling" is really, to a large extent, psy ops. If you can pull together enough polls that say you're gonna lose, it can be a *big* mental impediment to supporters of the underdog.
There are some polls I'd still take seriously, but IMHO most of them have been exposed as the hack exercises they are.

They have no idea why Trump took Michigan. It's his talk about NAFTA and renegotiating trade deals. Michigan is a state that went down the toilet because of these issues, and the people in California and New York seem to have no concept of that. There were union members who normally vote for democrats who voted for Trump because he's been talking about these issues for years. I get very frustrated with the people in the media who keep harping on racism. They don't have a clue.

Silver's take was that Ohio was the key. That Michigan, PA, Wisconsin and Iowa were all kind of the same state with OH being the most GOP. If Ohio went bigly to Trump, those states were then in play.
I don't think anyone saw Minnesota being in play.

She was ready. Cancer had already taken almost half her weight. Had to carry her the last couple of days, but she still managed to bark at a couple of squirrels.
She already beat the odds. Vet said she was dysplastic at 12 weeks old and wouldn't make it. I kept her anyway. She proved him wrong.
Coonhound paralysis when she was 2, they said she wouldn't recover. Wrong again.

Motive? Polar Bears are pretty much the only predator that regularly and actively hunts man. With sharks it's largely mistaken identity (thinking people are seals), the big cats generally hunt men only when the cats are older and outcast from their social groups.

Today was one for the books. Mrs. Krebs and I are in Upper Michigan visiting my mother. We drove over at 1:00 PM, found her place locked, but I could hear her in her bathroom when I knocked on its window. Long story short: she may have had a mild heart attack, passed out briefly, and then was too weak to get herself back on her feet. She's resting confortably at the hospital for overnight and is likely to be released tomorrow.

Yeah, and when you would see him going state by state and would discount a poll because he said the company wasn't that great, but then later would use that same company to predict another state. That told me that he had another set of numbers he was using, and internal polling is way more accurate because of the volume of calls that the campaigns make.

The article didn't lay it out very well, but his stated reason for chaining the dogs is that if he lets them run free, they bark. But, if they are chained up, they are quiet. His explanation of that is that the dogs know they are vulnerable if they are chained, so they keep quiet to avoid drawing attention to themselves.
Of course, the strategy falls apart if the asshole chaining the dogs up feeds the bears, teaches them to play with the chained dogs, and then fails to feed the bears one night. When their normal free food isn't there, they just go for that other source at the end of the chain.

Hah! I get it, I understand the "culture." My friend Linh was living with her boyfriend, now husband, for about 6 years before they got married. Every time her dad came to town, he had to move all his stuff out and her sister "moved in." Being single, they weren't allowed to live alone and most certainly not allowed to live with a guy. She has 4 sisters, they are all named Linh.

Trump was doing polling, but not the usual polling that campaigns do. A lot of the "internal polling" is done by volunteers that call the voting roll of their congressional district. I ran this for a statewide campaign in VA in the 80's, and each congressional district was getting about 300 respondents a night. There were no demographics, no age groups, just 300 per night per congressional district. That was 3000 surveys a night. We saw the movements weeks before they started to show up in the "major polls". Getting a major polling firm to do that would cost about $40K a night. With volunteers, it cost about $300 for the pizza and sodas.
I'm sure this is the type of polling that Hillary did, and that is why she stopped campaigning in the states the media kept saying she was going to flip even though all the "major polls" said she was winning.
When wanting to get what is really happening in a race, watch where they are campaigning in the last weekend, and look at their ads. If they are still running negative ads against the other candidate, they are in trouble. If they are running the "Presidential" ad, they are winning.

I found him in his house two days after his stroke. At the hospital, they asked my siblings and I if we wanted to let him die. Being of Christian faith, we instructed them to do erything within their power.
Most of his friends wouldn't come by to see him. They said they "couldn't stand to see him like that". I had to move in with him and take my daughter and my dog and stay with him pretty much around the clock. My sister helped when I worked. My mother (they were divorced) swallowed her outrage and helped. My three year old helped. I wiped butt, bathed him, fed him, changed him.
I was pretty much a captive for 5 years. But I will tell you this, his mind never stopped working, though his body did. He read the paper every day, voted, helped me with his business dealings, and most important of all, came to know the Lord.
While everybody else "couldn't stand to see him that way", I learned a whole different side to my father and ultimately learned a whole different side to humanity. People don't stop growing, and sometimes that thing you think that ruined their life, actually is what changes their life in a new a better way. I know it certainly made a better person out of me as well.
I was very sad to lose my dog today, but I had to do what was best for her and I do not regret it.
I was sad when my father had his massive stroke, but he was not a dog that needed me to put him out of his misery.
Humans and animals are not the same.

I met this neighbor from a few blocks away while he was walking his Doxie "Oocho" this summer, and we became friends as the dogs became running buddies
He's a real nerd, mid 50s & never married, no family here. IT guy for the local Sherrif's Dept. Real nice guy (no homo), but a bit lonely, it seems.
Anyway, knowing that he has no one else, I invited him to Thanksgiving at Mom's. I assumed he would adamantly but politely refuse.
Good news, I got an emphatic "Yes! thank you! I'd love to."
Bad news, I took him to lunch one day, and the little guy can really put it away. I figure that'll be at least 2 helpings of leftovers that I don't get to bring home with me.
Oh well, if I manage not to knock my alcoholic asshole crackhead brother out while we're there, then it'll be a win.
At least politics won't be a topic unless I bring it up.
Christmas promises to be a different scene - that's when the sisters, BIL's & their kids come for the day. Always a treat.

That just reminded me, I proposed to J on the farm, day before Thanksgiving 1980. We announced it to our parents the next day when we had Tday together.
My grandmother, who I'd lived w/ for the past yr since she was widowed, burst into tears. LOL, not a good sign, it all worked out in the long run.
We were her local support while she lived on her own for the next 28 yrs. She lived on her own till 102.5, amazing woman. Almost reached 104, just shy a month.

Again, I'm coming at this from a Christian viewpoint. We are made in the image and likeness of God. We owe it to animals to treat them well and we develop close bonds with some of them, but they are not human. We own pets. We do not own people.
"Rights" are an entirely human concept. My dogs never worried much about the rights of squirrels and a pack of wolves would not concern themselves with the rights of my dogs.

I went through a similar situation 15 years ago, but God didn't ask me to step up like He did you.
You are a man among men, and you have my sincere admiration and respect.
I don't know if I could handle that ...
Dad was diagnosed with lung cancer, and we lost him about a year later. I spent every moment I could with him, but wasn't a primary caregiver. He made every effort to come see me at work for as long as he could, too.
He eventually passed at home, per his wishes.
Eyes too blurry to keep typing.

you seem to be missing the point that rights and morality are not dependent upon the capacity of the one afforded the rights. if that were true the mentally disabled and incapacitated would not have rights.
further, the greater your capacity the greater your requirement to behave morally.
your dog does not have the ability to appreciate the rights of the cat so there is nothing immoral about your dog's behavior towards the cat.

It's one expensive hunk of meat, but damn, it's good.
I stopped by the grocery store early this morning, and they were cleaned out of the various cooking stocks. Come Thanksgiving or Christmas, they get a shit ton of the stuff. Swanson's. Chicken, beef, vegetable....which they put out on a big table. That thing was cleaned out.
I didn't need any, but I noticed that last year, and it sort of blew me away. They get a special order of the stock in right before, looks like a truckload of nothing but stock, and it's all gone in a day or two.

when you get around to reading what you wrote, starting at 326 would be a good place, you can try and reconcile what you typed here and before.
there is nothing snotty or condescending maherish or otherwise. you have gone out of your way to distinguish the differences between animals and humans. you have managed to avoid my primary point that moral behavior is primarily determined by the capacities of the actor. it does seem appropriate that you would close your argument with insults; though I do have to concede it is the most forceful point you have made in this thread.

After my divorce friends would ask me over for Thanksgiving.
The first 5 or 6 years I thanked them but declined as I was going hunting. Which I did. Had hunted Thanksgiving morning for years and it gave me an excuse not to invade their family time.
Then one year one of my buds and his wife said look, you're family. We really want you there.
I accepted.
Couple days later another asked. Explained why I had begged off for years but had already accepted an invitation this year.
"Good! Then you're coming over for Christmas Eve dinner this year and spending the night!"
Have at least spent Thanksgiving with someone every year since.
The holidays have been better.
I guess the moral of the story is, if some friends invite ya, accept.
They want ya there.

There is a fundamental difference. People can be unwilling to face the reality of what they believe inside, so they say things like they are putting an animal down for the sake of the animal. It is rarely true. I would grant it in the case of an animal that is hit by a car and no amount of heroics will save it. Then, difficult as it may be for some, ending the animals suffering is merciful.
But, how about something closer to the old dog story. There was someone up thread who talked about his grandfather medical problems at the end of his life. The grandfather came to stay with him and he spent 5 years of his life caring for him. He talked about how the grandfather still had his faculties and about how much they both got out of the experience. Then he talked about how he had his pet put down because the pet was old. He tells himself that he is doing it for the pet's sake.
No. He is doing it for his own sake. He did not want to put the kind of effort into caring for that pet like he did for his grandfather. I can understand not wanting to spend the next however many years and untold expenses trying to extend the life of an infirm dog. But, it is not for the dog's sake that it will be killed. If you were to try to kill that dog by strangling it with your bare hands, it would fight back. As long as it is able to do so, it wants more life.
When an adult tries to explain it to a kid why they are putting down an old, sick animal, they tell him it's for the animal's sake, but when the kid asks why they don't do the same for Grandma, you know, to ease her suffering too, the response to the kid will be some kind of gibberish. Nothing logical. They will not come out and say we just can't spend that kind of time and money on the life of an animal, so they instead try to maintain the fiction that they are doing the animal a favor by killing it. But, Grandma is a person, so it's different.

None of which is remarkable, except for the lie about killing animals for their own good. Some even believe this lie they tell themselves and others. But, it is a lie, through and through.

Btw, that Christmas Eve thing. It's a two family get together that started with Gary's wife's grandparents and a couple that they were friends with before either had children.
My how it's grown. The families are spread across the country now, of course, but they come back to that tiny little town for Christmas.
There were I think 46 for dinner, the yoj ngest 2 months and the oldest 92 and 24 people spent the night at Gary and Jan's.

How about an animal with terminal cancer? Talk about fundamental differences, the animal with cancer is going to struggle on, clinging to life because that is what living things do, but there is never going to be any purpose other than that. His 50th day with cancer is going to be no more meaningful or different to the animal than his first. What is the difference besides the length of time before the inevitable death, and what is time to an animal?

The grandfather, OTOH, wouldn't have grown or learned those lessons in the least, and the cat wouldn't have been able to learn and grow itself.

Every living thing wants more life. That's baked into the cake. But in the story above, the poster's grandfather learned and grew from during his infirm time. He came to know god, he imparted wisdom that would have been lost if he didn't have that time. He was a different and better man when he crossed over the rainbow bridge. A dog? A dog has many admirable traits, but he would still be exactly the same at the end as he was at the beginning.

So, yes, i would say ending that suffering is to the animal's benefit. In a similar situation, there can be considerable benefit to the human in not ending the suffering.

This is why I think it is high time for an Art V convention. And the States should not be "bought off" by consistory gestures from congress as they have been in the past when it looked like the States were ready to call for one.
The 14th amendment needs a major rewrite to correct the problems caused by bad interpretations made by the black robes. The same thing goes for the "commerce clause" and for the same reasons.
And thanks to those reasons the judicial branch needs a major rewrite to prevent them from causing those problems in the first place. A major step to prevent that would be to take control of the courts away from the federal government. Maker appointment to the federal courts a State function with each State nominating and controlling one Supreme Court justice. Also all federal judges to be appointed by the State in which they reside, and that includes appellate courts.
Also give the States the power to remove a federal judge appointed by their State by a 60% popular vote. Supreme court judges to be subject to removal by a 50%+ vote of all States or a 70% vote of both houses of congress. With that removal subject to a veto by the appointing State.

I have been an advocate of eliminating all tort law except in the case of a written contract. And a warranty to be considered a written contract. That would eliminate judge shopping for civil suits.

There are already medical liability laws separate from the normal tort system. However the tort system is being abused in those cases as well by ambulance chasing lawyers. Some States like TX have already rewritten their laws to eliminate that problem, or at least greatly reduce it.
