The Devil Exists: The Horrifying and Heartbreaking Tale of Rosemary Kennedy [Warden]
When I was a younger man, I would have confidently told you that Satan is simply a necessary personification of the concept of evil, used in the Bible to make a somewhat nebulous idea more concrete in order to help readers better grasp the importance of God's law and love.
I viewed evil as the absence of God, something passive rather than an engaging force that wills its twisted desire upon humanity. I don't believe that anymore. I believe that Satan is real and that he actively works toward the destruction of men's souls. There are many reasons that I believe this, one among them the tale of Rosemary Kennedy. It's a story long hidden from the American people. Even now, most don't know the awful details of what the Kennedy family did to their own flesh and blood. I'm going to tell that story because it's one that every American should know. Before continuing, I will give you this above-the-fold warning, her story will leave you angry, sickened, and filled with grief.Rosemary Kennedy was the third child of Joe and Rose Kennedy. She was born in 1918. Rose's delivery doctor was late in arriving to the birth, so the nurse instructed Rose to keep her legs pushed together until he arrived. It has been speculated that this act deprived the newborn of oxygen, leading to her mental disabilities after birth.
The Kennedy's have long described Rosemary as "mentally retarded," however there is evidence that she may have simply been learning disabled or, perhaps, slightly below average IQ. Rosemary twice failed kindergarten and was given an IQ test that put her IQ between 65-70. By 13 years old, she was shipped of to a private school to be educated by nuns. By 15, she was reading at a 4th grade level. No one outside immediate family suspected that there was anything at all wrong with her. Rosemary loved shopping, tea parties, social functions and dances. By accounts, her brothers adored her. She was a beautiful and vivacious young woman, as evidenced by the picture below.
The operation left the beautiful young woman you saw in the picture above palsied, incontinent, unable to speak and with the IQ of a 2 year old child. Joe Kennedy then hid his crime by shipping Rosemary off to a mental institution, where she was not allowed to leave the grounds as other patients were. At some time during her stay, she was sexually abused. Joe then sent her to St. Coletta School for Exceptional Children to be cared for by nuns. For 20 years, no one from her family visited and none apparently cared enough to press the family patriarch for details about what had happened to her. Shortly after Joe Kennedy's death, Rosemary's mother, Rose Kennedy, decided to reunite with her. Here is a description from the Daily Mail about what happened next.
"We went through the top of the head, I think she was awake. She had a mild tranquilizer. I made a surgical incision in the brain through the skull. It was near the front. It was on both sides. We just made a small incision, no more than an inch." The instrument Dr. Watts used looked like a butter knife. He swung it up and down to cut brain tissue. "We put an instrument inside", he said. As Dr. Watts cut, Dr. Freeman put questions to Rosemary. For example, he asked her to recite the Lord's Prayer or sing "God Bless America" or count backwards..... "We made an estimate on how far to cut based on how she responded." ..... When she began to become incoherent, they stopped.
Rose decided to visit and Rosie waited for her arrival with two nuns at the airport in Milwaukee. When Rosie sighted her mother deboarding the plane, she ran to her. Rose opened her arms to greet her daughter and Rosie raised her arms and beat her mother on the chest shrieking. 'Rosemary knew her mother had not been with her when she needed her most.' She was very angry.Other Kennedy members began to visit Rosemary somewhat regularly, including brother Ted and sisters Jean, Pat and Eunice. Bobby and Jack never did. Eunice eventually went on to form the Special Olympics, a noble cause and yet another in countless examples of God turning acts of evil into works of good. Yet even today, the Special Olympics website whitewashes the true story of Rosemary, stating only that one of the Kennedy's own suffered from mental retardation. Left unsaid is that Rosemary was a perfectly healthy, full functional young woman until her father decided that wealth and power were more important than his little girl.

Joe Kennedy Sr. did a LOT of things that are particularly repulsive and unpleasant.
When the country was struggling after the 1929 Stock Market crash, Joe (and a lot of other very wealthy people) continued to short stocks, making money on the decline. With the market being as it was in those days, there is a strong belief now that that really drove the market down and the country into a deeper recession.
Joe, of course, was Ambassador to the United Kingdom in the run up and during the beginning of WWII. He was so anti-British and had some open sympathies to......Germany (Nazis?), that the British government actually requested that Franklin Roosevelt remove him as Ambassador. And he did.
He once came home from a tennis match with a much younger woman, while Rose was having lunch with Lyndon Johnson (at that time, Senate Majority Leader) and another prominent Democrat. Joe very noisily went upstairs and had sex with this younger woman.
Of all the Kennedy sons, Robert was actually most like his father. Very smart, very ruthless, very unprincipled.
It's no wonder a lot of them turned out like they did.

That's possible. ECT was a more common treatment for depression/anxiety, but it could have similar effects as a lobotomy, particularly in the hands of poor practitioners. Lobotomy seems vile. I suppose there are legitimate uses for it, but it's hard to see them. God bless that little girl-completely alone. What a horrible way to have to go through life. On of my all-time favorite movies is One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest although it was heartbreaking though a lot of it. Lobotomies weren't that common but warehousing of lots of what where considerably mentally deficient people was.
60 Minutes did a piece on a mental institution called the Fernald School. My sister used to volunteer there when we were in high school. Massachusetts was at the forefront of a lot this madness and Fernald was the first of it's kind in the country.
Anyone who was considered sub-normal could be shoved off to the place and family almost never visited. The even had a category for kids who weren't really retarded, just low IQ. They were officially called morons. I shit you not.

My great uncle took an axe to the walls of their apartment in ~1930, 18 years old. He was a living testament to the f'd up world of psychiatric treatment. He had it all: electro shock, lobotomy, and every psychoactive drug ever patented and some that were experimental. Amazingly, I could almost converse with him when I visited great aunts flat. (He had a deal where he could walk to her home for lunch for lunch from the state hospital.)

As a young man, the band I was in would go do a charity dance at a Rosemary Kennedy facility near Chicago.. the kids there were mostly down's syndrome, but they had a helluva good time.
As I recall, they made candles, and would always give us some..
Perhaps it was the guilt that drove the Kennedy's to devote time and money to the mentally ill.. kinda sounds like it..

From my understanding, Boxing Day originated in England and was supposed to be a day for the servants or peasants.
In Canada, it evolved into 50% off sales and when you wait to make any major purchases.

One story about Old Joe that's actually pretty funny is how he got the Ambassador job.
He'd had a longtime ambition to be the first Irish-American Ambassador to Great Britain, and he put a lot of pressure on FDR to get the position in the mid-30s when the office came up vacant. FDR actually didn't want to give Joe the position, because he knew that Joe was a prick who would make an ass of himself, and by extension make an ass out of FDR. But FDR had to at least pay lip service to the idea, for political reasons. But if he could piss of Joe enough to drop it........
So he called Joe to the Oval Office for an interview with just Joe, FDR and James Roosevelt, FDR's son. After about 30 minutes or so FDR commanded Joe to stand up, and then told him to drop his pants. Joe was understandably confused, but he complied with his President's command.
FDR immediately started braying wildly, pointing at Joe and calling out "See, Jimmy? I told you it was true! HAHAHAHAHAHA!!!"
At this point, Joe was pissed. But he was astute enough not to lose his temper, and he asked what FDR was talking about.
FDR replied that they had a mutual friend who had gone boating with Joe many years before along with their extended families, and he'd seen Joe in his bathing suit. The friend claimed that Joe was the most bow-legged man he'd ever seen in his life. And that was a problem, because when the Ambassador to Great Britain formally presents his credentials to the King, he does so in period costume: wig, breeches and tights.
"And if I let you show yourself in public with those bow legs wearing tights, I'll be the laughing stock of the Western World."
Joe is REALLY pissed now. But he keeps it under control, and he turns it back on FDR. "Tell you what. If I can convince the Brits to allow me to go through the ceremony in the modern ambassador's costume of top hat, tails and striped pants, will you let me be your ambassador?" FDR thought briefly about it, and figured that Joe couldn't pull it off, so he agreed.
About a week later, the State Department received a cable from the Foreign Office saying that if he desired, the incoming Ambassador could present himself to the King in.......top hat, tails and striped pants. No one really knows how Joe pulled it off, but it's funny how history is made.
