Prosperity isn't the only useful measure. If someone turns a house in a residential neighborhood into some business, that affects others. Others who also have rights. I have no problem with Houston deciding on minimal zoning laws if that's what the residents have decided to do. But, other cities have gone in a different direction.
Again, I would not like it if someone decided to start doing body work at the property next door. They want to open a body shop, they need to go to a property zoned for commercial use. Even if they would pay more taxes than just a homeowner would, most people have additional concerns rather than feeding the government's coffers.

You don't want a body shop next door, so you want the govt to outlaw it, thereby depriving your neighbor of his rights to his property.

Wrong, at least as to rentals. Owners are allowed to do background checks on renters, and almost all of them do.
Plus, it's the difference between getting a new neighbor once a year or every weekend.

Government rules and regulations supersede any HOA or deed requirements.
HOA rules have provisions so that you can't have a satellite dish or tv antenna, Congress wrote the law saying "nope, you can't deny someone those services, so dishes/antennas are okay".
Deed restrictions still have wording in some places that the property cant be sold to people of a certain race or religion. Again, illegal under Equal Housing laws.
As for guns, if it is legal in the state/locality for you to conceal carry, you can conceal carry. HOA can't do shit except for send you "pretty please" letters.

The neighborhood I live in is 55 years old, and we don't even have an HOA (thank God) we have a civic club. HOAs are dictatorial scams set up by petty tyrants and lawyers who hope to be able to foreclose on somebody's property. Somebody tried to set up an HOA here but the people pointed out the civic club was working fine and the HOA got voted down.

Not sure what WRT means, and google wasn't much help.
That aside, I think I get your gist. Banning guns because you have feelz that bad things might happen is different from banning liquor stores and bars in single family home neighborhoods, for example.
I don't have a problem with people living in HOAs, where they regulate everything down to what shade of brown you must use to paint your front door. Not my ideal neighborhood, but I don't have a problem with others choosing it for themselves. But, most older neighborhoods are not part of an HOA.
I just don't see the problem with zoning laws in the abstract. Are there bad zoning laws? Have there been abuses? Undoubtedly. But still, the general idea of keeping the commercial and industrial activity out of residential neighborhoods is just, in my opinion. Someone wants to open a small watering hole, they should not think that they can just buy a house in a quiet neighborhood and start serving drinks. They should be the ones who look elsewhere to buy their property.

Well, I have been scavenging used engines from the dump. Have several old cast-iron Briggs, Kohler, and Wisconsin engines in the 6 to 12 HP range. But the predator engine from HF will be fine until something goes wrong with it, and you cannot find parts. But if you get 2-3 seasons out of it, you got your money's worth.

There are a lot of neighborhoods in the city and old county neighborhoods her that have bars in converted houses. I used to live in one. It was....nice. Convenient and very much what Cheers pretended to be, a community recreation spot. Some were the heart of their block.

Yep, we had plans to go to Myrtle Beach this upcoming weekend for our anniversary but decided to push it back two weeks because of the hurricane.
You may remember last year for our honeymoon we drove the Blue Ridge...or half of it at least, the Virginia side was closed because of Hurricane Joaquin.

Look for the Briggs "IC Series", they have iron sleeves, and are more heavy duty. Kawasaki made some good flathead one-lungers; I have a 13 horse on my Dixon mower. Another good brand is Robin, made by Subaru. And Honda, of course, now the gold standard for small engines. The Chinese engines are usually knock-offs of older model Hondas.

As for a HOA banning commercial/industrial uses in a community, I have no problems with it.
WRT zoning laws, I do like that localities have different zoning like residential-commercial-industrial-agricultural because those are all entirely different uses of land.
I know a family that has 250 acres of land in an outlying county that has been in their family for about 100 years. They were farmers, and the property was zoned agricultural, because of that, it is valued by the county much less as the surrounding property. Because of that, they only pay about $500 a year in property taxes instead of about $20,000 a year if it was zoned residential.

stuff. Want a great example? Go to Annandale, Virginia. Until the late
90's or so, it was a quaint suburb that looked like people actually
thought about what they were building and where. Now? Good lord, it's
awful. There are McMansions next to split level houses, things are just
crammed here and there -- it looks awful and it's hard to navigate.
Also, yeah, I don't want a hog-rending plant next to my house anymore
than some of you want adult bookstores next to elementary schools.
Zoning and such can be abused, but there's a lot to be said for it.

One huge advantage that Houston has is that our bad areas can be easily redeveloped into something nicer. Just build better houses than were there before. There is a reason that Houston is such a dynamic growing changing city, and that reason is our lack of zoning laws.

You buy into a deed restricted neighborhood the rules evident, clear and are legally enforced. The restrictions must be renewed in a designated time frame (ie 5 years) and the neighborhood can vote to alter them .

I grew up in a fairly small town. My neighborhood had a small grocery store 2 blocks away, a small tavern about 5 blocks away, and a pinball joint a block away. All of them were long time establishments that were grandfathered in after they did the zoning. None of them could have been started when I was growing up, since the neighborhood was residential. The grocery was handy, the bar catered to old farts, so not many problems, but the pinball joint, that was another story.
The guy that owned it was and alky. At one time or another, he had served food, alcohol, sold groceries, whatever he could do. When he turned it into a pinball joint, there were lots of problems. Kids skipping school would hangout there, and there started to be a lot of problems with vandalism, home break-ins, stolen cars, etc. They finally closed him down, and the problems dropped down to next to nothing almost immediately. At least in our neighborhood. No doubt, the troublemakers went elsewhere, but that was good enough for us.
To answer your point directly: a bar draws a lot of traffic. Lots of strangers coming and going. Some of them are not going to be the kind of people you want hanging around next to your home, your valuables, your children.
That kind of establishment creates more noise than your typical neighbor. Zoning laws allow people to live in a pleasanter environment that they would be able to have if every property could be used for any old thing.
And, you must be aware, the noise laws are different for commercial zones than they are for residential zones. If my neighbor was making the kind of noise you hear outside a bar, the cops would make him stop. But, they don't run all over town making all the bars keep the noise down. That is the advantage of locating bars away from where people are trying to relax in their homes.

The sports camp was allowed under the zoning, but the neighbors didn't like the sound during the day. He told them that he had an offer from a pig farmer to build a hog farm, the neighbors withdrew their complaint.

Donna, with respect, what you may have missed in your visit to Houston, was that the same "cheek by jowl" mix of skyscrapers, churches, homes, BBQ joints, etc., makes for a highly liveable area, where homes can be close to work, to church, to dining and entertainment.
Pure "downtown" skyscrapervilles tend to be ghost towns after the 5 o'clock get outta dodge whistle, and then there's the likelihood of the dreaded 2 hr. commute out to the 'burbs.
Yeah, Houston has lots of those commuters, too. But it's more often one hour or less, than more.
And, here's what drives the control freaks (liberals) crazy. The way Houston works? Self-generating, un-forced, integrated and cohesive neighborhoods, with blue collar, white collar and everything else, also all living pretty much cheek-by-jowel, too.
That's one reason you liked the people here. Cause WE like BEING here. It's a cool place.
Check out the neighborhoods along Westheimer, East of the Galleria. As many McMansions as cottages, and the mix, (get this) works!
Go South from Westheimer on Kirby towards the Medical Center. More of the same, plus oh-so-twee shoppes, down n' dirty BBQ joints, righteous music of all kinds and every designer dress, BMW or poodle you might wish to ever see.
All cheek-by-jowel with every manner of neck-bearded hipster, Whole Foods vegefarian, All American construction engineer and worker, too.
We blend. The old Melting Pot > salad bowl.
I've been in too many big city business districts after that 17:00 scramble for the exits.
If they'd had some people downtown, maybe there'd be some restaurants n' bistros and the like open.
Damn few people, damn little demand, damn few places open to serve those few people.
Rinse, lather, repeat.
All that said for Houston, I do like my smaller places by the sea. Or I go through saltwater withdrawls.
So, here I am. Kinda cool here, too, y'know.

They shut him down through semi-extra legal processes. The city kept getting complaints about trouble caused by the people who frequented his joint. But, they didn't do anything while they were in his joint. They would do their deeds after they left. So, the city started hassling him about all kinds of stuff. What finally closed him down is that when he put in the pinball machines, it changed the type of business he was running, so they said he lost his grandfathering. He talked about fighting them, but he couldn't afford it.
But, if there were no zoning laws at all, they wouldn't have been able to do squat. If he had gone back to what the business had originally been, some kind of small grocery / lunch counter (before my time), he could have stayed open. But, the reason he had changed in the first place was because he wasn't making enough money. Adding the pinball machines made him viable, but he was drawing a bad element, so everyone else suffered.

No problem. I enjoy telling you why you are wrong.
Freedom is messy. And, I am not entirely unsympathetic to your point of view. There are all kinds of examples of zoning laws run amok, so they are not a perfect solution.
My main concern with respect to zoning is residential. I am much less worried about mixing industrial, commercial, agricultural, etc. But, I think it is worth segregating residential areas from other types of activity, even though it does result in some loss of property rights. Especially if the property owner knew about the restrictions when he bought the property.
When government comes in after the fact and then restricts someone's property usage is a legit concern. People should be compensated for that kind of thing, since it is a taking.

I live on an acreage parcel in the middle of crop land. But if one of my neighbors was to set up a feed lot or a piggery, I'd have no means to prevent it. As it should be. My winter place in AZ has an autobody and paint supply store about 2 blocks away, which is absolutely unobtrusive. The convenience/liquor store/bong/knife shop a block further away is more of a concern, due to the clientele it attracts. The folks that run it are OK, and quite friendly.
I think the elephant in the room is that there is a gulf between those that buy a house because they want a place to live, and those that buy a house because they expect to cash out sometimes on an inflated market. The latter can get downright paranoid about anything that threatens their precious property values.

The meeting to discuss rezoning was well attended by people in opposition. Traffic, noise and access by fire & rescue were all brought up. In the future, they planned to add a cemetery, which would be a problem with every homes' shallow well. The newspaper still painted the community as islamaphobic.

What you have is a pile of wood, not a stack. I have a similar pile at home, and indeed one at the AZ place, and yes, I used a table saw to cut it, too. I would define "stacked" wood as having the pieces placed in parallel rows. Of course, that is helped by having uniform-length cut wood. With the random cuts you and I have, such stacking is hard to do at all, let alone well.

I couldn't see the rack clearly in the picture. Seems to me the solution is to get a fire going in the pit, drink a few beers, and stack a few pieces in the rack every time you throw another one on the fire. Shouldn't take long to get it in shape.

Heh. I actually told Big " You're going to witness a level 101 class on WHAT NEVER TO DO WITH A TABLE SAW. Don't do any of this until you're 50 YO like I am and have my experience". He's not mechanically inclined so I'm not worried about it (he'd call me if he needed it), but I think I blew a fuse a half dozen times when the blade stuck cutting doors, frames and even a bed frame that got tossed on the pile. Truthfully, a chainsaw would have been better for some of it, but I don't trust him to hold the pieces for the precision that would have been required for that. "Stay way over there while I'm using the table saw" is just a leeeetle bit different from "hold this" next to a chainsaw.

Speaking for myself, when cutting up scrap wood for the woodpile, I prefer to use the table saw. Using a portable saw to cut small-ish scrap means having to clamp it or hold it down with a foot, with just that much more opportunity for injury. With the table saw, I can put both hands on one side of the blade, and feed the wood through the blade fairly safely. And the rate of production can be way faster, too.

You know, I have older table saws without the blade guard. The blade is right there, screaming away, and I show it a healthy amount of respect. I think sometimes the guards can cause injuries, by giving you a false sense of security. Never had a table saw accident, because basically I am afraid of it, and don't get casual with it.
OTOH, I broke my arm with a reciprocating saw! Was trying to cut a sheet of thin steel, on an overturned dresser drawer, and me crouched on top to hold it down. The drawer disintegrated due to the vibration, and I tumbled backwards, falling no more than about 3 feet, and I fractured my left wrist, as a result of trying to check my fall with my outstretched arm.

Heh. I was cutting up some scrap plexiglass to make mixing boards for auto body filler. Had one piece hang up, and the force was so strong it bent the aluminum table insert around the saw blade. No harm to me, or the saw blade, and I was able to straighten the bent insert. No more cutting plexi with the table saw!

That's a good point. I joked earlier about what not to do with a table saw 101, but my saw is older, without the plastic guard, and the spinning blade is RIGHT THERE. I keep my hands away from it at all times and use push sticks whenever applicable.
An open screaming blade has a way of, shall we say, focusing your attention.
Not a knock on you deplorable dude, accidents can happen to anyone. My father in law is a master carpenter, better at all of this than any of us here. He's been working, carefully, with power tools for 50 years.
And yet when Big was young he called him "Grandpa no fingers" because dad in law lost the tips of the fingers on one hand (from the last joint up) years ago in a power saw accident. (My wife tells me she learned half the swear words she knows that day. Wife's sister collected the finger bits and put them on ice. Nothing that could be done, however, hence: Grandpa no fingers. And he was lucky at that.)
He was ripping a sheet of plywood when the plywood started to rise up. Unthinking, he went to slap it back down. Heh. Yea.

The plot of the movie, I felt, was about the making of the movie itself: a director is suicidal because his latest movie is a disastrous flop. It was like self-confessional -- the terrible movie being referenced was the very movie we were watching, and the director "character" was in fact the director of the film we were currently watching. Self-refertial and desperate. Plus, it was 1961-style humor in a 1981 package -- the worst of both worlds.

That was just the environment within which the actual movie took place - which was the machinations of the main buddies. A very similar thing happened to me. A while back I was friends with a bunch of nerdy types, and they all raved about their favorite movie, "Buckaroo Banzai," which I said I hadn't seen, so eventually someone checked it out so we could all watch it together and they could introduce me to this fabulous classic that I somehow has never seen.
And then...as the film began, I slowly started to realize that I had seen it before, but it had made so little impression on me that I had forgotten all about it. I didn't mention this to my friends though, so as to not spoil their time. But as I rewatched it, even surrounded by enthusiastic fans this time, it once again left me completely unmoved. It's not that I hated it or even disliked it -- it just made no dent in my psyche. A solid "meh," as you say.
