We're headed towards a system where the government chooses winners and losers in industry, their chosen winners support the politicians who protect them from competition. By this, the government exercises de-facto control over all industry.
There's a name for a system where the government controls industry, and where there's still technically private ownership, but only for an approved class of insiders. Fascism.
Fascism was very popular in the economics schools of the late twenties and early thirties when Mussolini was popularizing the concept, with the US Ambassador to Italy even remarking that he'd be remembered as one of history's great men. It never went away, it just hid itself behind other labels.

is there anywhere in Tejas with the following criteria:
Decent housing (schools are not an issue) large lots preferred (10-12K minimum, moar is bettah)
Low incidence of FSA/BLM/LaRaza type population (racialy diverse is fine)
humidity that isn't ridiculous, at least most of the time
no HOA
not a million klicks out in the sticks.
we had a line on a place in Sugar Land, and, even though the lot was smaller than what we have here in #Failifornia, and the pool smaller than ours, we were toying with the idea of a 2nd home/ refuge, until we saw it was in an HOA.

If you can take all of those with the tradeoff of living in a college town, College Station / Bryan might be for you. There are HOA's in some areas, but not in others. Most of the population is middle class or working class, and there doesn't seem to be a large FSA contingent.
Thanks to the constant churn of students, you can always find *a* job, even if it's just at the Dairy Queen slinging burgers.
The city's not too big to be horrible to live in, or too small to have all of the things you want.
I moved here 3 years ago from the trainwreck of drug-infested, perpetually recessed Central Florida, and I love it.

That's exactly it. I've explained it before and it usually gets pretty long, but their belief system comes from a central paradox, the belief that where human events is concerned, there is no objective truth. If there's no objective truth, no idea or course of action is any better than any other, and success or failure is completely random. Communism must work somewhere, at least once, according to that.
Except that's not what happens at all. Reality refuses to go along with their madness, and our philosophy, which is predicated on the fact that there are eternal truths that can be learned, continues to succeed. Anything that succeeds more than random chance is impossible to their warped worldview, so they can only come to one conclusion, that's we're cheating. Imagine seeing somebody win 1000 times in a row at the roulette wheel. They think we're stealing everybody else's chances to succeed, thus the cult of victimology...

We did the switch about a dozen years ago,maneuver looked back.
Pros: Never run out of fuel (assuming no insurrection or SMOD)
Cons: Initial expense. NG doesn't burn as hot as propane, so requires getting used to. Have to buy a grill specifically set up for NG,!or one that can be converted to it (we bought a CharBroil, NG kit was ~$50).
Still, would never go back.

If that's not a joke about ambiguous antecedents or whatever you call it, most (I think all, but there may be a few cases) intersex conditions result in sterility -- the individual is incapable of reproducing as either female or male.
Wallis Simpson, Duchess of Windsor, was another famous one rumored to be intersex, in her case complete androgen insensitivity syndrome.
When a person has children, and it's usually a woman, since there's no question (unless they faked a birth or something), that's proof they are not intersex.

Here is a bargain on the edge of Austin, it's unincorporated so taxes are lower. I don't believe there's an HOA cause people do pretty much what ever they want on the street. It's a great part of town, I live close by. I want this place but it's a bit over our budget plus my husband loves our current house we built 6 years ago. It has a pool, guest house, horse barn, garden, pool, 2+ acres etc. all under $800k in a VERY desirable area of town. We have the only republican city councilman in Austin. It's not as lefty as most of the city. Close to everything, but not too close.

Regarding HOA's: yeah, spawn of the Devil. But my rule of thumb is, if the house that interests you is on an older, grid-plan street, then there is probably no HOA. If it is one of the newer subdivisions, with confusing, similar street names, and curved streets that intersect at weird angles, then there probably is an HOA.

I'm no real estate pro around here but it seems like there'd be plenty of locations like that around Dallas/Fort Worth. Personally, I like the area south of DFW outside the burbs and could see myself getting a piece of property there at some point.
What is "too many clicks" to you? Would half hour outside DFW be too much?

Lotta kids in our neighborhood hanging out after school was done for summer.
One of us geniuses decided we should have a wedding and party and it kind of took on a life of its own. Steve was the officiant and his kid brother my best man. Every kid in the neighborhood got in on the action and we ended up in someone's pool. Somewhere I have a picture set of the "ceremony."

For the best of Texas life and culture, conservative locales, good land prices and as good weather, I'd suggest looking into:
* Kerrville
* Fredricksburg
* Copperas Cove
And if you want slightly smaller towns, stunning, beautiful vistas, and still be but an hour from Austin or San Antonio, perhaps:
* Marble Falls
* Blanco
* Burnet
Do your search engine quests on them all. I think you'll find something to suit your vibe with one of those, there.

Think of the various distortion pedals that they sell for guitars. I just looked it up as a refresher. The 3 pedals are the damper, the una corda, and sustenuto.
The damper basically makes every string act as a sympathetic string and completely changes the sound. The una corda originally had the hammer strike one cord instead of the 3 surrounding it, but modern mechanisms in upright pianos don't allow that, so it's basically a lower power strike now. The sostenuto or tone sustaining pedal keeps a note from being damped after you remove your fringers from the keyboard.

My folks did that in the 70s. They had a dual grill barbecue unit and when we moved to a house with a pool, dismounting the grills, mounting them on posts with gas lines, and setting up a picnic table between worked out very well. The wall used was the kitchen on the other side, so the lines were very close, and the proximity to the big sliding glass door of the adjoining living room made it very easy to to take a platter of stuff from the fridge to the grills.
That house needed a lot of work that my parents never managed to get done but I really miss it. It horrifies me to look at satellite photos and see the pool has been filled in. It's being used as some sort of assisted living facility now.

You too? I had one of those installed a year ago. Leaked a bit. I smelled ... something ... but wasn't sure. Then, one day the smell was unmistakable so I called the gas company. They came out and checked it and their meter thing was pinging as loud as anything. Leaks all over where they had replaced the meter and the pipes.
So they redid it. The smell that night was 10 times worse than it had ever been. Had to call them again. The idiots who "fixed" the leaks left it all with worse leaks so they had to "fix" it again the next day. I made the guy take readings before he left.
What a bunch of incompetents. Thank G-d they only work for the gas company and not something that might be dangerous.

So they redid it. The smell that night was 10 times worse than it had ever been. Had to call them again. The idiots who "fixed" the leaks left it all with worse leaks so they had to "fix" it again the next day. I made the guy take readings before he left.
What a bunch of incompetents. Thank G-d they only work for the gas company and not something that might be dangerous.

For the best of Texas life and culture, conservative locales, good land prices and as good weather, I'd suggest looking into:
* Kerrville
* Fredricksburg
* Copperas Cove
And if you want slightly smaller towns, stunning, beautiful vistas, and still be but an hour from Austin or San Antonio, perhaps:
* Marble Falls
* Blanco
* Burnet
Do your search engine quests on them all. I think you'll find something to suit your vibe with one of those, there.

Gas, like electrical circuits, is where I tend to call in the pros. I can hang a ceiling fan into an existing box. Want that fan installed as a whole new circuit leg?

I don't lack the confidence to install a gas line. I do though lack the license to assure it's insured. And that's a burden I'm just not willing to carry.

Baseline (a manufacturer) total gas detector, and gas chromatograph. They use a flame ionization detector. Very sensitive, and the output voltage is directly proportional to the concentration of the gas being detected. You have a tiny hydrogen flame burning in an enclosed burner, with a chimney. There is an electrode ring, not far from the burner. There is a voltage impressed upon the electrode ring relative to the burner tip. You have a quiet "baseline" current. Introduce a gas species into the supplied air stream for the burner, and you get ions in the flame, current increases.
FWIW, on the "portable" units, the output of the chromat was fed to an HP integrator, which output the results of the run on a paper tape. The bigger logging units had a computer to do that job.

In 1991, I was serving on the USS Camden (AOE-2), and we were driving in circles in The Gulf from early April to late June, gassing up the USS Nimitz, watching dead sheep float by, and almost hitting a mine one time (starboard fantail lookout saw it a hundred yards off, AFTER we passed it).
Every two weeks we would pull into Jebel Ali in UAE and take a cab to a bar that was the only place you could drink a beer.
There was a very good looking singer in a very crappy band that played very little but Bette Davis Eyes, for hours.
It was a lot more fun when we took a cab into Abu Dhabi and visited the Gold Souk region of the city.

One reason our ancestors didn't live much beyond their 30s is that their teeth literally wore out. Ground down to nubs by the constant work to extract a few nutrients from a tough gritty diet.

I haven't smoked pot in at least 20 years, and damn few times before that. I never liked it much, I'd get that loopy high(which I never found to be all that), but 20 minutes or so later I'd fall sound asleep. What's the point?
Well, earlier this year (May 2nd, to be exact) that changed, and wow did it ever fuck me up. That was the night Cruz withdrew from the race. Being a Cruz guy, I was bummed, so I went out to the local pub for a beer. I've very careful with my alcohol intake when I drive-I know my limits, and how much = what BAC-and I stay well within them, even if the pub is only about a 6-7 minute drive from home.
So I had a beer, and then went to leave, and around the corner of the bar was a guy I knew-a bar acquaintance- smoking a joint. It doesn't bother me when people get high, I just don't chose to partake. He offered me a hit, as he'd done before, and instead of declining as usual, I accepted. I figured I'd take a hit, get home before the buzz started, and then I could fall right asleep instead of tossing and turning obsessing over the stupid election. I got in my car and left.
5 minted later I was in trouble. What I should have done was park and walk home, but I was just turning onto my street. This sucks, but be careful, be cool, just get home. I can handle this.
I drove right past my house, realized what I had done, and turned around.
And drove right past my house again, going the other way.
SHIT!
So I go slowly around the block, sitting on the edge of me seat, yelling at myself to keep myself in the moment "You're so high. You're SO damn high! YOU'RE SO FUCKING HIGH!"
And I got home safely by the grace of God and went to bed, but even then the anticipated sleep didn't come, I tossed for hours obsessing about just how STUPID I'd been and just how LUCKY I was. I suppose it worked, I didn't think once about the election.
Never again.
So yea, pot is just a bit more potent than it was back in the day.

The (automatic transmission) van was in the shop for several days, so we were driving the (manual) truck, usually only used for 'round the farm chores. When I got back in the van, it was so weird at first to not have anything for my left foot to do, and I'd keep reaching for the gear shift as if I needed to.
Other than the tractor on the farm when I was a kid, the first manual trans I used was on a 4x4 flatbed at the highschool summer park maintenance job. The old thing was so worn, you didn't even need the clutch to shift from 1st to 2nd.

Pot isn't more powerful now. Back mumbledy decades ago, I had Thai stick, Jamaican Red, Acupulco Gold. Just once, a single leaf - leaf! - of something called New Mexico Blue, which really was NM sky color - and it was like smoking black Afghani finger hash. But the Brazilian we got one time, in a deal that would make a great Cheech & Chong style movie, made all those other things seem like ditch weed.
So, it's just that good pot is more readily available. And if you're not acclimated to the good stuff, well, a room full of us passed out half-way through a bowl of Brazilian knows how you feel. I imagine I'd get floored pretty easily by plain old Columbian or Mexican nowadays.

It is the speed at which the gene transfer takes place, who decides what genes, and the artificial part that bothers me.
Occurring in naturally in nature allows for natural selection over time and nature to balance itself out. It is not a shock to the system.
If men cannot even safely control monetary policy then I have serious doubts on the safety of overnight artificial gene transfer creating new species to be released into the environment at large and ecosystems on a smaller local level.
I believe we can agree we are walking a razors edge doing this.

It is. The stories I've read mention "depressed" shipping rates for the last many years. I try to reconcile that with the volume of laptops, tablets, phones, cars, aircraft parts, etc. that have been coming east for the last decade. As well as the falling price of fuel.

It measures demand for shipping vs supply. You can look up the definition, how ship supply is tight and inelastic and all that. Anyway, the long decline in the Index over the years mean the demand for global shipping is shrinking relative to supply. It's a global indicator.

I love that map of "if only tax payers voted". Something I have been saying for years. We need an amendment that specifies that you can only vote in any election if you pay net taxes of "x" amount to that the district that is subject to the vote. IOW to vote in a nationwide election you pay net federal taxes. To vote for a State Senator you pay net taxes to that State etc all the way down to the local government level. Every voter must have "skin" in the game. If you don't pay for it then you don't get to demand it. I would also put a requirement in it to be a US citizen with proof at registration. But all of that would require an Art V convention which some people are afraid of.

New York Daily News is, this morning, running a story on how Cinemark is 'shaking down' Aurora theater shooting survivors for 700k dollars in legal expenses.
You see...they sued Cinemark, on shaky legal grounds. The judge in the case urged the plaintiffs to accept a proposed settlement, which they rejected. Later, they lost their suit. Now they're on the hook for the legal expenses Cinemark had to pay in order to defend itself.
The story leads us to believe, without ever actually stating it, that all this comes totally unexpected. No one could possibly have predicted that the evil Hitler like Cinemark would go after widows and orphans for so much money. It's adding insult to injury, or something.
It's also a load of bs. They knew what the risks were, and proceeded with their suit anyway. They took their chances, hoping for a little Jackpot Justice, and they lost.
Also, not mentioned in the story, how their own legal team, and associated expenses are being paid.

I am a firm believer in loser pays legal costs. A lot of these civil actions would cease. And this was a jackpot extortion suit to begin with. The theater owners, not anyone else not associated with that bastard who did the shooting should be held legally liable for anything that happened.

I think I had heard that at some point (from Tammy Bruce, maybe?). I would have liked to see his arguments. We've been down that road before, where we say "the polls are lies." The polls really were crap, but (legit or not) they at least picked the winning side.
That being said, I remember at least one pro in the field talking about how it's become kind of impossible to poll, and that a lot of pollsters are getting out of the business. There's also how Trump overperformed vs the polls in the later primaries.

I found the whole thing uplifting, and eminently practical. I could see absolutely every single thing he said actually being implemented, he justifies it with no apologies, gives the necessary historical perspective - the whole deal. It's 100% the kind of stuff where you ought to be asking, "Why wasn't this done 40 years ago?" It's what ANY competent government with any means would do.
That being said, there IS a legitimate "weak spot" of sorts. While he says, "no amnesty", and "all are subject to deportation", in reality what he's saying about non-criminal illegals already here is "WE'LL FIGURE THAT OUT LATER."
The actual quote is, "[After border security is established, and the criminal aliens are kicked out] then and only then will we be in a position to consider the appropriate disposition of those who remain. That discussion can only take place in an atmosphere in which illegal immigration is a memory of the past, allowing us to weigh the different options available based on the new circumstances at the time."
The Media (MFM and otherwise) were salivating with glee over Trump's supposed "turnaround" on his signature issue for a week, and they're grabbing this like a lion would a juicy steak, but this is only "softening". You can believe that he won't really do all the deporting he originally spoke of, or you can believe he CAN'T, or you can believe that he plans on doing it but wisely chooses to NOT SAY.
Who cares? He's the only guy who credibly goes as far as he does, be it a Rep or a Dem. If he gets all 10 steps done (and he WILL, if the GOP doesn't succeed in stopping him), it would be HUGE, regardless, and about friggin' time.

Yes, what he said was that a lot of the people coming over the border and into the U.S. illegally from Mexico are coming here to commit crimes like rape and murder, and that Mexico is happy to dump its criminals on us.
And that is an obvious truth, and anyone who doubts it just needs to take a look at the prison populations in states like AZ and CA and TX. Our prisons here in AZ are chock full of illegal alien Mexicans who've committed violent crimes in AZ (and continue to commit violent crimes while living in AZ prisons and being housed, clothed, fed, and provided "free" medical care by AZ taxpayers). Ever heard of the New Mexican Mafia? They're a violent Mexican prison gang, widespread throughout the southwest U.S., and most of them are illegal aliens. The required initiation rite is murder.
But yeah, Trump is the problem.

"If these illegal aliens are so wonderful, why isn't Mexico building the wall on their own - to keep them IN."
