Did tonight change anyone's mind about not voting for POTUS at all? Staying home? vote Libertarian?
Seriously, did tonight change anyone's mind?

82 Well - jumping back in - hope you all don't mind. Just caught the last 5 minutes of the speech. it was a good ending - as it should be, Cause if you cannot deliver the last 5 mins - then what's the point.

But anyway - it could have been crap - because as the boss noted earlier - the alternative is evil - not crap, but criminal evil - are we ready to live with that?

I will not willingly give in. I will prepare for it, but will fight in all dark alleys to prevent it.

135 Monumentally depressing. The Republicans, with their many flaws, still were the best vehicle for conservatism. The party controls both houses of Congress, runs many states down to dog catcher, and just needed the presidency to affect actual conservative change rather than be a stopping force. The Democrats are going to nominate the most well-known, disliked, and distrusted liberal woman in America. And the Republicans decide to nominate a big-government liberal who makes her look stable and competent. Literally all she has to do is stay quiet and occasionally point in his direction and say, "You really want this guy running things?"

The Republicans blew it.

Besides you being a concern troll, I thought it was very interestingly nuanced. He said "I am not going to let companies move to other countries, firing their employees along the way, without consequences." What might those consequences be?

Things like, "if you pack up your factory and move out of the country, your ex-employees are released from any anti-compete agreements"? How 'bout, "trade secrets that are developed as an American taxpayer cease to be protected by American law if you remove yourself from American jurisdiction"?

It was a subtle statement, it was a businessman's statement, it was an American patriot's statement, and it had nothing to do with Constitutional Conservatism.

Feeding into Democratic bullshit by pretending their fake problems are real (in the case of the statistically nonexistent "wage gap") and calling for the government interfere more in family life (it is not the government's damn business to take notice or interfere with families' day care decisions even if they aren't stealing my money to do so) is not conservative... not be a long shot.

I can post up my pics with Sen. Cruz leading up to his Presidential Bid, as I was that solidly in his corner and am still of the opinion that he'd have been a superb Commander in Chief.

All of your arguments were germane to the primaries, had lingering but diminishing value up to and through the rules committee fights, and haven't the value of the fart of a flea, since then.

You're now just of less value than a hobo beating his head against the wall, and more harmful to others, withal.

In short, you've become but a boor, with all the bad manners and poor reputation that accompanies such an appellation.

And yet Trump is not advocating for cutting all of those things. I guess its more emotionally satisfying for bullies to threaten than to recognize and acknowledge that Government is the freaking problem.

For the record, even if none of the things the US govt does to fuck up markets existed, it would still be a businessman's fundamental right to handle his company as he damn well pleases within contract law and fraud statutes. Business owners do not exist to create jobs. They exist to create profits. The jobs are a nice side effect that, in a free market, benefits both parties in a labor purchase but it is no one's due.

338 And to contrast, Redbanzai, in #335, though I'm sure we disagree on now supporting Trump, demonstrates how to posit a logical argument, and without denigrating the argument on the other side.

If I might tackle that argument though, the issue is duo fold, in that if Trump succeeds in the substantial reduction of red tape, taxes and other government overhead, the numbers of companies choosing relocations overseas for tax and regulatory relief, should fall to the number of statistical noise.

But in today's governmental environment, I'm with you, in finding these companies wise in ducking out from under the hammer of Big Brother, should they choose that course of action.

Trump might not have made the most eloquent case for his argument in the few sentences he devoted to the point in his speech, but I do surmise that he'd first seek to remove the base motivation of these companies following the expat path.

And that, I think, is the real core of the argument, libertarian purity notwithstanding.

342 The problems I have with SOME American based international corporations right now.

1. They go to a cheap labor, most of the time 3rd world country, yet keep their HQ in the U.S. This bothers me because they want the freedom, military and legal protection of the U.S., just not the labor. If they have large factories overseas they should should be forced to leave the country and set their HQ somewhere else and give up America entirely.

2. They have loyalty problems to American national security and interests. For example - if they have factories in China they tend to support leaving China alone on things like hacking other American companies and national security secrets. They use their money to support politicians who don't want to do anything about China, even when China is threatening us with war.

3. They not only use their money to influence American politicians to keep the tariffs low for their products coming into the country. They also make darn sure to keep the regulations going on American companies still in America, especially newer companies who might challenge them. So they bribe foreign countries to keep regulations and taxes low for them there, yet push for regulations at home to keep potential competition down. Notice how Amazon has never seen a regulation or tax they don't like. Wonder why?

So free trade and foreign factories has not turned into more freedom at home, just created a crooked system imported in from other parts of the world.

Reasonable concerns but I disagree with your analysis.

Let's say you open a lemonade stand. Your price for lemonade is capped by what people are willing to pay for it. Period.

So you have a choice: get your costs low enough to produce lemonade at a price people will pay or go out of business.

Now, you are the only employee to start off with. You don't pay yourself because you want to grow to put the money you make into growing the business and your rent gets paid by your parents or something. So you have zero actual cash income. Guess what- the government disagrees. Let's say you sell it for a dollar per glass and your cost is 70 cents. 30 cents goes to buying a machine so you can increase your volume without recurring labor expenses. If your machine cost more than $500, the government doesn't consider it an expense. You must pay tax on the $500 you used from company income... along with any other penny you reinvest.

Eventually, you realize you can't work 7 days a week because eventually you'll get sick or want to get laid or something. So you hire someone. Well, the government says you have to pay them minimum wage, which they now want to be $15/ hour. Does that mean your cost is $15? Nope. You also have to pay 6.2% social security and 1.45% Medicare and UI, which can be up to 6%, on top. You also (in most states) now have to pay workers comp insurance (which is insanely expensive) and, one you open up enough stands to have 50 employees, provide health insurance. In some states, your also required to provide paid time off and other benefits. You also need to deal with payroll and ensure that tax deposits are made within 3 days after every payday, file the appropriate reports every payday and quarter, and are subject to giant fines and penalties if your employee decides that you looked at him/ her funny, paying them unfairly, or you fire them for sleeping on the job. So, you really need to hire someone to make sure all this shit is done right or you will be bankrupted for the sin of giving someone a job.

... or you could order everything from China and have none of these problems and provide the same product at half the cost.

The reason people are "taking American jobs" overseas or hiring illegals is because the government and employees are making it increasingly impossible to do business here. It has nothing to do with "greed" or "1%ers" or "evil excess profits".

Your customers aren't willing to pay more but those same people are demanding more from their employers and voting the government more power to get it for them. That is the problem.

Jesus Christ I don't know if I've ever seen a person so convinced of their own self-importance in posting in a comments section.

As for me leaving, I've been visiting this site for the better part of 8 years. You writing a self-indulgent novel length comment isn't going to change that.

You might, however, have gotten yourself banned. Which would ultimately make this night successful.

348 I live in Cleveland and today I got a press pass from a friend. It gave us access to the convention floor. Really cool experience. One thing of note. The Ohio delegation was stuck over on the right side of the hall, which was odd since the convention is in Ohio and I thought they might have had a place of more prominence. But then I started thinking about how the Ohio political machine is owned by Kasich and then it made sense. Ohio was being dissed. And, rightly so, due to what a dick Kasich has been. As I was watching them throughout the night, I saw no one applaud, EVER, no waving of banners, no nuttin. They were just hunkered over their phones. Asses.

352 Also, the security at the convention was phenomenal. Knowing Cleveland and how we usually do things, I fully expected chaos downtown but things were buttoned down. There was such an incredible police presence that I think BLM just said, "we'll pass". The RevCom (revolutionary communists) were supposed to be on public square today. We looked for them and they never showed - at least not when they said they would. Cowards.

354 Sally first thing you need to do is fix the vacuum between your ears, That was very handy back in the Lewinsky days. I am certain Billy Jeff could find a use for it. But those days are gone. You need to cowgirl up and introduce yourself to the reality that Trump was describing.

That part is true, but now the cycle is self generating so even if you attempted to lower taxes, or regulations you will not get a lot of support from big corporations. Why? Because those corporations have found a way to influence big government and make it work for them.

So a big company can hire former regulators and lawyers to get through the regulations, but a smaller company cannot. Once you have set up a lot of factories overseas it is not in you economic interests to change the situation in America. If America lowered corporate tax rates, or removed lots of regulations, etc. it would mean their overseas factories would no longer be as profitable counting shipping and energy costs. Also moving back to America would cost money, building new factories, etc.

It is always better to keep status que when you are a big fish on top, company or nation.

Also America cannot compete with a country who offers a dollar a day for work. Those are countries where life is cheap and poverty great. No one in their right mind wants that in America in order to compete with Cambodia, so the only option is tariffs to equalize that aspect out. An election slogan of Make America Cambodia so we can compete is not going to get more than the staff of NR to vote for you.

The solution:

1. Low taxes at home for corporations/business
2. Lots of energy production to keep energy prices low and available for business expansion.
3. Tariffs on incoming products to equal out 3rd world cheap labor costs (we will never be Cambodia)
4. Reduce regulations to help reduce costs and power of lawyers
5. Simplify tax code to reduce power of lawyers and accountants
6. Simplify legal codes to reduce power of lawyers
7. Fine companies who keep their HQ here in America yet production somewhere else. Force them to choose loyalties.

I've found a worthy rebuttal to be a detailed dismantling of the opposition's argument. Use logic and reason to PERSUADE another to the Validity of your viewpoint. Repeat as necessary.

Are the Trump Haters finally willing to take a second look at Trump?

Wake me me when commonsense kicks in.

(I know better than to think that Trump Haters will suddenly realize that he is a good and decent man - as testified [AND WITHOUT FUCKING EXCEPTION] by the many multiples of people who have dealt with him personally - who loves his country and his fellow citizen.)

375 Yeah, I thought it a strange musical pick but looking at the bottom line it might make more sense:

You can't always get what you want
But if you try sometimes you just might find
You just might find
You get what you need.

So far as hearing in a vacuum, sound might not travel in a vacuum but assuming rapid depressurization, you'll hear all kinds sounds conducted within your body as fluids and tissues erupt from various orifices.

There is no pretense in Donald Trump. - - - NONE.

Say whatever else you like about The Donald: but if you call him a fake, then you are either clueless or yourself a fuckin' liar.

This morning, Trump let it be known in unambiguous detail that it was the Cruz camp who fired the first ugly shot in maligning Melania Trump.
THEY (Cruz people) are the ones who gave their silent endorsement of that vicious attack on a prominent candidate's wife.

Cruz has a screw loose.

I didn't see that early on. (I was a BIG TIME early Cruz advocate.)
But now observing the whack-job, Cruz, feign wounded honor over a fight HIS people started and which he refused to acknowledge (let alone denounce): tells you this guy is out of touch with reality.

I am beginning to think Cruz just might be the shamelessly philandering pussy-hound (cheating on his wife many multiple times with several women) he has been reported as being.

- We've already had one of those in the White House.

We don't need a Republican version of that foul shit.
Thank you very much.

He isn't Satan's son, he isn't Hitler's heir. He is a man that through hard work, luck and grace as made a lot of money. If anything he's the rodney dangerfield of politics. He destroyed Cruz's career in one night and no one noticed.

378 Did Trump ever mention smaller government?

Posted by: dweeb at July 21, 2016 11:51 PM (cxyn3)

For the blind and dumb NeverTrumpers:

Trump, LOUDLY, said in his speech that IN HIS FIRST 100 DAYS he will have instructed EVERY DEPT. in the Federal govt. to give him a list of largesse and waste that he can get rid of.......that pretty much sums up EXACTLY what Trump supporters expect...

That contrary to GOP establishment and DEM establishment (who are one in the same) Trump will treat the government like he treats his own businesses - run a profit, be mean and lean, and be successful.

Now, for the establishment suckups - that sounds like "bigger government" because they have shit their pants and need to paint it as such because they are afraid the pork will stop.

Posted by: doug at July 22, 2016 03:54 PM (Y7fRE)

379 I'll reiterate my twitter comment from last night. My mostly apolitical wife thought it was a decent speech and she really liked some parts of it. There's a distinct possibility that it will resonate with a segment of the population. The real question is how big that segment will be.

Posted by: physics geek at July 22, 2016 04:06 PM (3A32d)

380 379: From the CNN instant poll 75% of the people had a postive reaction to the speech. 56% said they were more likely to vote for Trump after the speech
