30 In non-RNC crapfest news:

Soros pens some big plan for what Euroland must do, which is spend loads of debt/printed money and expand immigration. It's Keynesian economics and Keynesian people policy. The more immigrants you allow in, the more immigrants you can absorb. It's magic.

This is what the elites want. They're not stupid, they know what this will do. This is what they want.

Second, Wikileaks claims it's going to release a bunch of secret Erdogan govt files, emails and docs leading up the coup. They now say they are under sustained cyber attack from the Turkish govt. It has censored Wikileaks from access in Turkey.

They've given us hyped nothingburgers before, so we'll see what this is. There are claims I've seen that Erdogan had an enemies list of people to arrest. Before the coup.

127 Geez, the PBS crew covering the convention looks like a fruit salad left out overnight.

About Cruz, well, Reagan had more grace and style in '76. Win or lose, be remembered as the good guy, not the douchebag. That being said, he is not a maxi-bag like Kasich, who is so intent on a snub he did not even show up to the convention hosted by his own state. Yeah Kasich, in the classical mode of tonight's threads you will be the Pyrrhus of this century.

Ryan has fulfilled his favor to a colleague here nicely. Pence had a good intro that made him come across like the necessary Flyover Country balance to The Donald. He's a nice guy, and he will be a busy man in a trump presidency.

Or he cut his nose off to spite his face. And if I hear the word "principles" again, I'm going to choke a bitch.

I agree. It was a stupid, unforced error, and will probably put "paid" to his political aspirations. In any case, it should; someone with so little political sense has no business in politics. If he couldn't bring himself to endorse Trump, fine; make up an excuse for not attending the convention, but don't do this.

Posted by: exdem13 at July 20, 2016 11:04 PM (ry4ab)

I think this was explicitly what Cruz was doing. Everyone booing him here and at the convention just reinforced for a lot of NeverTrumpers what they thought of them in the first place.

He tried to pave a path for NeverTrumpers would be able to pull the lever by not explicitly endorsing Trump (Which many people who have problems with Trump would have seen as a sell out.) He laid out all of the reasons why letting Hillary win was a very bad idea, from Anti-cop stuff to Islamic terrorism to Immigration.

He ticked off every Trump policy without explicitly endorsing Trump- which again, NeverTrumpers would have considered selling out. Hell, half of Trump fans would be saying things like "Hey, Cruz got his knees dirty now that Trump won, eh?"

He tried to lay out a reasoned argument for unity against Hillary, and a lot of trolls are doing their damnedest to make sure that argument gets slapped away.

I further pledge that I will not seek to run as an independent or write-in candidate nor will I seek or accept the nomination for president of any other party."

Signed by: all the candidates

March 30 -- "No, I don't anymore," Trump said, when asked by CNN's Anderson Cooper if he continued "to pledge to support whoever the Republican nominee is?"

Seriously, given a choice between spinning something a more positive direction and infighting, the right chooses infighting 9/10 times.

The best *possible* thing that could have happened here was for Trump to say something like "it was a hard-fought primary but here we are together fighting for the same ideas," only with more "great," and paper over the differences, but.... NOPE, the crowd goes piranha.

He ticked off every Trump policy without explicitly endorsing Trump- which again, NeverTrumpers would have considered selling out. Hell, half of Trump fans would be saying things like "Hey, Cruz got his knees dirty now that Trump won, eh?"

That's not what he did. What he is worried about is the #NeverTrumpers staying home and not voting on all the other races. What he is saying is come out and vote GOP on all those non-presidential races while sidestepping the presidential election.

"To those listening, please, don't stay home in November," Cruz said, a plea that suggested he was about to endorse Trump.

But he didn't: "If you love our country and love your children as much as I know that you do, stand and speak and vote your conscience," Cruz said. "Vote for candidates up and down the ticket who you trust to defend our freedom and to be faithful to the Constitution."

Well yeah, I can agree w/ the sentiment, but this IS politics, never been nice since Adams and
Jerfferson.

They all signed a pledge to support the nominee. Remember, Trump was a holdout and then signed.

So who lived up to their pledge?
Walker
Carson
Christie
Santorum
Huckabee
Rubio?
Fiorini?

Who didn't?
Bush
Katshit

On what Trump said about Ted's father and wife
"Politics isn't beanbags" aka suck it up
Again, those same people went apesh*t over Michelle Fields (correctly) saying Trump's campaign manager almost pulled her over.

Trump supporters here were the ones cheering how low and sleazy Trump was behaving towards Cruz and others. Said it was a good thing. He's a fighter.

Cruz returns the favor and now you want to be outraged over his "low" and "turd dropping" behavior.

Politics , like a debate team.. is all about making your case, and then you slap one another on the back and go have a beer. THAT's what drives normal people NUTs about politicians or even most lawyers... they don't hold a grudge against their opponent... fight the good fight and then they all hang out. Most of them.

This Trump development is fascinating. It got no more personal or ugly than past campaigns..... and yet... so many are genuinely pissed off and petulant. Hmmm. A line has been crossed.... and if Trump wins, entire careers and dynasties will have been overthrown.

What you say might happen....what might also happen is that Cruz consolidated the conservative vote today (much like he won the government shutdown over the long term), while the Trump vote has no one to unite behind in 4-8 years.

Either way, Cruz can continue to protect the conservatism from both the GOPe and the Trump faction.

I have seen what you mean. A lot of people in 'politics' are into politics. The party really does not matter as much as conniving with your fellow professionals in telling other people what to do in their lives, and cops with guns to back it up.

One example - A somewhat famous conservative commentator's spouse was an Obama team insider. During the net presidential administration their positions may change 180 degrees (but I doubt it, more likely their public positions will remain unchanged).

Posted by: Burnt Toast at July 21, 2016 12:16 AM (P/kVC)

486 I think Cruz just found himself the King of an island. He'll be tilting at windmills with Lee in the Senate and the rest of the GOP will jump on the Trump bandwagon. In four or eight years, there will be little momentum for Cruz to work with... more likely Pence or the Trump kids will have ascended .

The next 8 years are going to be nuts. Lots of hot irons in the fire and a hostile press and butt-hurt Democrats if Trump wins. The GOP political landscape will have changed dramatically... and Cruz, Bush, ... hell,... all of them will have had their aspirations aborted. If Trump wins... a new era and the GOP will become a different party. I'm willing to be wrong, but that's how it looks to me.

Instead, he showed his greasy groady snide face, mocking the NY delegates in a passive aggressive manner...either thinking he is funny or cute or clueless, but I choose revenge and pure jealousy.

On the other hand, as Mr. Trump read the speech, saw that this petty loser would not endorse, and let him speak anyway...I have to think Mr. Trump knew Ted was going to moon the crowd with his red, chapped baboon butt. Adios.

522 I'm now disappointed in my primary vote for Cruz.

That was an amazing speech, almost perfect. Cruz had everyone there on his side. He was already the runner-up in this primary, which is often a good place to be for the next primary in the GOP. Then, well, that blatant non-endorsement.

Look, Ted Cruz could have finessed a call to vote for Trump that wasn't technically an endorsement. Everything prior to the end of that speech indicated a level of skill where he could do it.

He didn't do so, on purpose.

He hurt the causes and values he endorsed in his speech, and helped Hillary Clinton in the election, because he was personally offended by Trump.

Well, no kidding. Trump can be an enormous jerkass and definitely was to Cruz.

But you know what? No one held a gun to Ted Cruz's head and made him go out on that stage. He could have stayed home, pulled a Kasich, told the RNC he needed to wax his banjo and upgrade the video card on his cat that night. Whatever. No one seems particularly exercised about Kasich ditching, and everyone is well aware that Trump was much meaner to Cruz.

What he did was revolting. If he hated Trump that much, and he had reason, he should have stayed home. Don't force Gingrich to run damage control and give the media a storyline and, you know, help Hillary Clinton.

Ugh.

Tilikum, politics ain't beanbag, but that wasn't politics. That was just spite, hurting his own prospects just to hurt Trump.

Trump is either directly opposed to or ignorant of most of the Constitutionalist principles Cruz discussed.

Honestly, if you're going to vote Trump, particularly to stop Clinton, fine. But don't pretend he's anything but what he is, and DON'T get mad at others for not pretending.

Posted by: person at July 21, 2016 01:35 AM (mFkVC)

526 Who's pretending anything about Trump on this thread? Everyone is discussing Cruz's stunt. Whether people are big fans of Trump or default supporters is irrelevant to Cruz's political future after tonight. Right?

Did snubbing Trump on the stage help said principles? No, not even a little. It made Cruz look like a jerk to go up there and do that, lessening his own influence.

Did snubbing Trump on the stage hurt Trump's coattails (ie, non-Trump GOP, including conservative and constitutionalist GOP) and help Hillary Clinton and her constitution-shredding buddies in the Dem party? Oh, hell yes.

He should have stayed home.

528 Trump has signaled a willingness to let Constitutionalists pick his supreme court justices for him.

No government in decades has actually governed in a way that remotely complies with the Constitution. .

And so, the Constitution issue primarily comes down to the supreme court, hoping we get enough judges to some day have rulings that require govt to abide by the Constitution. On that issue Trump is basically willing to give conservatives what they want. See his list of supreme court picks.

534 Cruz believes DJT will go down in flames to Scrunt, or in the event DJT becomes president, he'll govern as a big-gov squish.

Either way, he thinks he comes out untarnished for a 2020 run. I support Cruz, but I think his conduct tonight was as a mistake. America first. Scrunt must be defeated.

And take it from this Hoosier- enjoy that new car smell with Pence. Hopefully, he's a plus for the ticket, but he's lock, stock, and barrel owned by the GOPe Chamber of Commerce wing.

1. Rebranded common core
2. Raised the white flag vs. gay gestapo. Their special status is now codified in the Indiana constitution
3. Dutifully expanded Medicaid for o'care.

Decent on jobs and better than a dimocrat, but still a top-down guy- not a fighter for the small gov cause. Not even close.

536 "Who's pretending anything about Trump on this thread? Everyone is discussing Cruz's stunt. Whether people are big fans of Trump or default supporters is irrelevant to Cruz's political future after tonight. Right?"

Not necessarily; one's reaction to Ted Cruz's speech is pretty much parallel to how one views Trump. If you think he's a piece of shit (like many conservatives reluctantly voting for him), you'll probably either support Ted's speech or find his actions counter-productive but emotionally satisfying. Either way, it probably won't negatively impact his conservative support. Trump fans may become hypocritically NeverCruz, but they probably weren't going to vote for someone so "creepy", anyway.

His Presidential ambitions may or may not have been impacted, but he has probably solidified his support among the conservative wing of the party. At worst, he's gone back into the briar patch in a stronger position to organize conservative resistance to the GOPe and Trump wings of the party.

Posted by: lowtech redneck at July 21, 2016 02:16 AM (KF8B+)

537 Yeah, this whole debate boils down to how Trump will govern if he wins and none of us definitively knows. In fairness, all kinds of room for argument there.

If he wins, 4 years from now we'll squabble over whether he was sufficiently conservative or a cloaked prog. But I still think that's better than the known-known, unrecoverable disaster that is Hillary.

Posted by: northwest at July 21, 2016 02:20 AM (6y/kW)

538 Agree, he's damaged for sure.

And Cruz was far from perfect. There was TPP/ immigration squishiness, that pathetic response to the leftist meltdown at the Trump rally in Chicago, and numerous other signs.

He's an overly-ambitious politician but still a valuable ally. I hope the folks in TX keep him in the senate ruffling feathers for a few decades. It's a good place for him.

542 483 "Cruz is done. Period."
"I take it you're going to vote for Kasich or Ryan in opposition to Cruz next time, huh?"

As it turns out, there are quite a few anti-Trump conservatives who nevertheless showed grace and class:

Scott Walker
Rick Perry (if he runs again)
Bobby Jindal
Rand Paul

None of whom came to a GOP convention with the express purpose of pissing on the nominee.

OTOH, it could be that Mike Pence may be the conservative choice in '20 as the "next in line" . . .

554 I'll also say of all the speakers Cruz is the only one that seems to full eyes open understand the imperial monster that the left has become.

Trump voters, some bernie rebels, and brexit voters arent pushing against big government. They just are antsy about some autnoritarianisms but want gov as a big stable welfare pot not divided with third worlders.

I believe history shows this is a contradiction of natures and the crowbar of authoritarian gov will win most battles but lose some wars.

The people who actually support him will continue to do so because he doesn't sell out.

Interesting though that Trump supporters interpret a very upbeat speech that mentioned Trump almost not at all and urged people to support people up and down ticket who "you trust to defend our freedom and to be faithful to the Constitution" as an attack on their Orange Overlord. It is almost as if they, too, realize that Trump will not defend our freedom and be faithful to the Constitution.

560 After all this talk i thought was going to see this prideful arrogant cruz at the end lash out. Not at all what happened. Watched two diff streams in case one was captueing something diff.

First Even though i voted constitution Party last election and never before that i plan on voting trump this year unless he starts wearing pantsuits and talking about dmv waiting rooms as indoctrination opportunities.

My sense from cruz speech was he stuck to his principles speech and ignored the chanters. Same what i would have done if it was say jeb getting the nom. The booers at the end did seem louder and may have outnumbered the original chanters?

I saw Trump had arrived and started down stairs., while cruz closing was dragging looked like ego jostling to me between the two men. 4me/shrug nothingburger hey we wanted natural fighters these tiffs are part of the package when you put two of them against each other. We arent the lady dems this happens.

Thought id put my thoughts down as i watched in case someone wanted to know what one of us not on team trump or team jacob or team cruz thought.

Posted by: Shiggz at July 21, 2016 05:09 AM (6petY)

561 To me whem Chistie didnt respond to chanters " lock her up " i didnt take that as Christie abandoning trump and jumping in Hillary train.

Maybe these are bigger momentus slights that i dont get or maybe some of you are wayyy overreacting.

Also makes me wonder if this shock and offense is axel turfers trying to sow division among us?

I'm guess___ newt chief of staff?

564 "My sense from cruz speech was he stuck to his principles speech and ignored the chanters. Same what i would have done if it was say jeb getting the nom. The booers at the end did seem louder and may have outnumbered the original chanters? "

Cruz saw the entire stadium erupt and tried to, lets just say "fib". He tried to fib his way out of it by saying it was the NY delegation.

One thing that was crystal clear is that Cruz supporters need to start setting aside a tithe for Cruz's re-election because Adleson locked him out of his sweet.

It's being reported that Cruz went over his time by three minutes.

The awkward Trump arrival was because of that, I would guess. Someone should have held him back. Going over time by 3 minutes is hardly unheard of.
