A Little Background And Commentary From Daniel Pipes On Erdoğan And The Failed Coup [CBD]

Remember Daniel Pipes? He is the guy who thinks that ISIS will self-destruct from internal pressures within the year. I have my doubts about that, judging from the the pathetic response to its provocations (read: savage murders) in Europe and here at home. If we don't exert significant pressure on them externally, they have the leisure time to fix what ails them internally.

But the guy knows the Arab and Muslim world better than most, so for background information he is a very worthwhile source. Interestingly, he publicly rooted for the success of the coup, unlike the testicle-free leaders of the free world.

He makes three points to bolster his argument for deposing a "democratically elected" president of a putative ally (NATO!).

  • Erdoğan stole the election.
  • Erdoğan rules despotically.
  • Military intervention has previously worked in Turkey.

Turkey is the country where military coups d'état have had the most positive effect. In all four of the modern coups (1960, 1971, 1980, 1997), the general staff has shown a disciplined understanding of its role -- to right the ship of state and then get out of its way. Their ruling interludes lasted, respectively, five years, two and a half years, three years, and zero years.

Turkey would benefit now from a spell of military readjustment, ending Erdoğan's increasingly rogue rule, even if that meant replacing him with more reasonable Islamist figures from his own party, such as Abdallah Gül or Ali Babacan.

Pipes also thinks that Erdoğan will be eventually thrown out. I don't see him overstepping with the West. We are simply too weak and chaotically unfocused on the real fight to do much about him. Russia is another story. Putin knows very well that he can act with impunity, so Turkey must tread lightly, or the Russian bear, old and slow and arthritic as it is, might just decide to snack on some Turkish delights.

27 I know everyone is claiming that Gul didn't have anything to do with the coup, but a weekly standard writer on the Federalist radio said he probably did.

Why?

1) Gul and Erdogan are both Islamists and were allies until around 2013

2) Gul and Erdogan already purged the military years ago and installed their own guys.

3) So, Erdogan wants to get rid of the Gul people...he has a fake coup, or maybe the Gul people made their coup too early (because they were being found out.)

That was his theories. Though he also believed it was a real attempt.

A lot of commenters took at face value Gul's denial, but who knows.

Note: this is just a theory. It could have also been false flag, or even a secular coup that was poorly executed possibly due to timing having to be moved up.

- NATO could depose Erdogan.

- Putin might invade Turkey to get that warm water port.

- ISIS itself could implode, but the worldwide dream of the caliphate will not.

- A couple of states are ready pick up where ISIS leaves off. ISL, ISA, ISS, ISN*, anyone?

- And why wouldn't some ISIS leftovers turn up in the U.S. with their loot and their jihad?

They're sick of the PC, sick of being inundated with "you're all rapists" propaganda, sick of seeing their buddies killed because of restrictive ROEs, sick of everything they sacrificed for being given away for political expediency, sick of not having the funds to train and maintain their gear. sick of seeing their comrades neglected by the VA...trust me, the military rank and file may not necessarily like Trump, but they as a bloc won't be voting for the FAB.

139 Yep. The old Muzzie empires that lasted any length
of time basically got their loot from being on the East/West trade
routes. The Ottomans started to collapse once the West was able to move
west for trade.
Posted by: WOPR - Nationalist at July 20, 2016 02:37 PM (Ee2nz)

One of the Ottoman's main failures was to develop any useful field artillery. Once the West had that in hand they were able to counter most of the advantage of the Turks' infantry and light cavalry had.
Even up to the Crimean war the Turks would be outranged by the Russian artillery and would complain that the cowardly Russians would not close and fight.

Another failure was to adopt newer ship building styles that gave greater mobility and range on open oceans and rough seas. The older galley was good in the Med and the Red sea, but out of that would not hold up to anything but coasting, and could not mount the greater guns like even similar sized Portuguese caravels could.

One of the things I have taken as dogma is that tools direct the task, but expanding your vision of the task demands new tools. If you fail to change your tools you are crippled to what changes you can make. If you insist that no change can be made in the task, you will never see a reason to invest in newer tools

Europe is a geographical expression. The original purpose of NATO was to combine like-minded countries in a defensive alliance against the Soviet Union, and, although this became obsolete with the USSR's demise, NATO can be repurposed into an alliance against jihad (while still serving as a deterrent to Russia, whose expansionist desires are a concern for several NATO members).

We should not need to defend them any longer... they need to defend themselves.

combine like-minded countries in a defensive alliance against the
Soviet Union, and, although this became obsolete with the USSR's demise,
NATO can be repurposed into an alliance against jihad (while still
serving as a deterrent to Russia, whose expansionist desires are a
concern for several NATO members).

.The issue is they are not actively fighting islam or the jihad, they are pretty much ignoring it until it strikes in their Countries.

NATO has outlived it's Charter and needs to go away. At the very least we need to back off with our support for it. We cover about 85-90% of it's entire expenses. We can't just up and quit as it is a legitimate Treaty Obligation the US signed and ratified, but we can certainly close the checkbook off some and let it die a natural death.

301 "But Texas has to jump through all the VRA nonsense (Thanks W) so they
can't inact laws without jumping through ridiculous hoops."

That can't be said too many times. The LBJ-era Voting Rights Act had a sunset clause built into it. It expired in 2006.

That incredible asshat George W. Bush personally insisted on getting the VRA re-authorized, and twisted arms to get it through the Congress, controlled at that time by Republicans, and then made a big splashy show of signing it back into law.

Dubya's theory was that his doing so (as part of his self-described "redefining" of the GOP) would cause black voters to flock to the polls in that fall's midterm elections and vote Republican out of gratitude for his act of _noblesse oblige_ on their behalf.

Well, blacks went in large numbers to the polls in the fall of '06, and they voted their customary straight-ticket Democratic slate, helping produce the epic wipeout of Republican control of both the House and the Senate that year. Welcoming in Speaker of the House Pelosi and Senate Majority Leader Reid.

Another Bush family triumph.

I almost want to say to them: You lost this time around, accept it. You have four years to articulate why your approach is the better approach, four years to assess what happened and adapt. You have years to let the rancor go and build bridges and alliances again.

The otherwise and hitherto sensible and even quite incisive people who have lost their s**t over Trump have no such explanation/excuse.

It's not just you. When the Austrian Foreign Minister humiliated the Russians by his action that would "amaze the world with our ingratitude", he created the conditions where Russian was not going to endure another humiliation at the hands of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. When the Austro-Hungarians invaded Serbia despite Russian guarantees of protection to the Serbs, that was it.

Assuming that he can avoid a nuclear war in the process, Putin could establish his legacy by taking European Turkey and enough of the south bank of the Dardanelles and Bosphorus to guarantee safe passage of its warships from the Black Sea to the Mediterranean. That would mean taking control of Istanbul, the former Constantinople, a place that has enormous cultural and theological significance to the Russians.

Putin could really burnish his legacy if he also added Greece to the Russian orbit. Seeing as how much of a mess the Greeks have made of their own economic house, that might actually be attractive to the Greeks who riot whenever their government proposes some sort of economic sanity.

371 In case it went unnoticed, the federal appeals court has struck down the Texas Voter ID law. And I quote:

'President Barack Obama's administration took the unusual step of
deploying the weight of the U.S. Justice Department into the case when
it challenged the law, which requires Texas residents to show one of
seven forms of approved identification. The state and other supporters
say the Texas law prevents fraud. Opponents say it discriminates by
requiring forms ofIDthat are more difficult to obtain for low-income,
African-American and Latinovoters.
Seven options, all equally impossible for people to obtain.

'We are extremely pleased with this outcome. This law
will no longer prevent eligiblevotersfrom casting a ballot this
November,' attorney Gerry Herbert, a member of the legal team that
challenged the law, said following Wednesday's ruling.'

376 It's politics. Get over it. And so should Cruz if he's harboring those feelings. He's young and this has been a good lesson for him. He'll know better next time.

--------------

I have a couple of thoughts on this.

1. Yes, its politics, and as the saying goes, politics ain't beanbag. Some insults are to just be accepted.

2. I think we are all tired of the "its just politics" where we speak badly of the other side in public, but behind the scenes we are all drinking buddies.

So with that in mind, some insults / lies should be beyond the pale. Jeb would have looked better had he defended his brother from Trump's attacks on him. Those insinuations were beyond the pale to me, and had Jeb treated them that way, he would have looked better.

Further, should be defend politicians just because they have the same letter behind their name?

I don't think Trump is conservative at all, so I will not defend him. Of course, I'm not planning on making a national run in the future, where I may want his supporters votes.

What will Cruz do? I don't know. I'm afraid he will try a middle ground where he antagonizes the Trump camp and the NeverTrump camp rather than taking a stand that would endear him to at least one side. We'll see how he does.

For now, I'll continue to support him even if he does make a light endorsement. He has earned the right to make a few compromises here and there - IMO.

Well in some cases it's political. The "Theory" being that having Nukes on a "Nato" or US Base theorectically under "Dual" control was a way to assure that the Host Country itself would not feel the need to go Nuclear Independently. Of course the Nukes were and are fully under US control, but again "theorectically" they can not be "released" without the permission of the Host Country. And since they are all mostly Air Born Nukes, it seems a tad archaic in today's Military.

I refer to this conundrum as the Caesar dilemma. Brutus assassinated Caesar to restore the republic but whatever was going to happen after the assassination was not going to be the republic.

Once again, we supposedly do not live in a democracy. I have no desire to live in a democracy. I am not a supporter of pure democracy.

.OK, I remember them now. They came in the Type II, Menu A, Style 3 box. I would have rather had the pound cake that came in the Menu B boxes, it was pretty good.

401 Mike Hammer @ 365 -AF has cooks?
I don't know about that, but the EM barracks at the AF base Madrid had beer in the drink machines in the 60's, and the AF Academy O club had good chow back in the late 90's. That's the way an old Seabee reccollects, anyway.

402 "Putin could really burnish his legacy if he also added Greece to the Russian orbit."

The Russians have had an Imperial desire to liberate Constantinople from the Turk for many centuries. The Soviet break was more like the Commonwealth was to England than any real fundamental change to the Russian character, They still have that mystical desire to liberate the Second Rome (Byzantium).

I don't see it happening...

Russia still has a lot of untapped resources in their own country to exploit... why would they try to occupy a large unfriendly region?

Putin does want to secure the Near Abroad... a buffer zone between him and the EU... because he does not want a major power sitting directly on his border (which is why they meddle in the Ukraine...).

Add in that Russia has a vested interest in both where the Middle East's new Nat Gas pipeline goes... either Iran, Iraq, to Syrian ports...

Or Saudi, Qatar, Iraq, through Turkey....

and delaying it as long as possible....

And I don't see Putin making any more major moves soon.... unless forced to.

Perhaps you've confused me with #NeverTrump?

I'm voting for Trump if he has a realistic chance to stop Hillary. Under the circumstances, I would do the same with an Establishment candidate.

Bah. Ambrosia compared to C-Rats, especially the infamous and
dreaded Ham and Lima Beans. And don't get me started on the fried
chicken on Air Force in-flight box lunches. Carefully gathered rejects
from KFCs worldwide, aged for 3+ years outdoors at Davis-Monthan, and
then seasoned with a superb blend of JP-4, diesel, and lubricating oils.

Now, get off my lawn.

I remember an experiment in a high school science class where we all dipped a toothpick in some liquid substance and tasted it. I could not taste anything but for those that could, there was no hiding their revulsion. Apparently it is some genetic trait where some people can taste that stuff and others cannot and the trait runs in families.

I suspect that there is something similar in lima beans. I find them to be pretty nondescript vegetables but other people have extremely negative reactions to them. I always liked the ham and lima beans C-Rats. I would not trade spaghetti and meatballs for them but I did not mind swapping most other meals with people who could not stand them.

And you candy assed whippersnappers bad mouthing MREs, get off my lawn. When I was carrying a 600 pound pack and a mortar base plate barefoot through the snow (uphill both ways) I would have loved to have had MREs to eat instead of C-Rats.
