If Trump loses at the convention, in spite of having the required number of delegates for a first ballot nomination, then Republicans all across America will smell a rat. Yes, it can be done, but it will be extremely difficult without fracturing the coalition that is required to elect a Republican in November. Let us be honest about good ole' Georgie of the blue-jeans hate and the pompous bow ties....he wants Hillary to win because it will solidify his position as one of the trusted retainers in the court of the almighty Dollar, and he doesn't care who sits on the throne. Hillary isn't ideal, but Georgie will still make his money and be fêted by the media and those in real power. Only if Trump wins will Will's position be threatened, and we simply cannot function as a free country if George Will is not on TV 15 times each week! But there's more!
But what about that last-gasp reason, resonant among many of the legal thinkers at the libertarian/conservative Federalist Society, for backing even a revolting Republican -- the Supreme Court? Will's answer was revealing: "Sure, but I'm also concerned with the fact that I do not really believe Republicans think clearly enough about what they really want in judges...having a Republican president is not an answer in itself."Oh, you stupid flyover people. Just climb back into your pickup trucks and throw the old dog in the back and go hunting. The mandarins in Washington will take care of you, because you are too stupid to know what is best for America.

They were nasty, and I got nasty back. Thought I was bullshitting about my mother not being mentally competent to talk to them. I had to convince them that I would sick $10Ks of lawyers on them against a few cents in change unless they started acting nice and polite.
I did find the bill, both of them, from some online outfit called "Blair.com", for some clothes. I satisfied myself she had indeed purchased them, it was delivered. She couldn't remember at first, but finally was able to point out the blouse she had ordered, which matched their description over the phone.
Then it hit me I'd better double check, and lo and behold, another credit card bill, this one just 1 month overdue.
Late fees and interest piss me off. It's really my fault, I should've been watching more closely (not to mention my father, who never has handles any bills in decades).
But damn I'm pissed off, and may go running through the woods screaming, and end up where my mother was the past month....

Not every Republican critic of Trump has nefarious motives. Can we at least admit that there are legitimate disagreements as to whose election will be more harmful in the long term to the principles in which you believe? I will probably vote Trump if for no other reason than the election of HRC would be the election of a President who is de-facto exempt from all laws (whereas Trump will be under a microscope), but am under no illusions that he can be trusted to defend conservative principles. I hope that no one else reading this has convinced themselves that we aren't deciding between two life-long Democrats. It's just that one would be an elected official, and one would be a Queen.

No, but the second Bush lost, Republicans were very clear as to all of his faults, and changed course quickly and effectively. The staff of National Review was not somehow fired over it. Limbaugh continued to grow in popularity. Bill Clinton didn't send out pink slips to all pundits who opposed him, as a lot of Trump supporters seem to believe he somehow will.
If Trump gets annihilated (current polling has us on that course), it will quickly become common knowledge that he was a gigantic mistake. He may win yet, and we shall see what the FBI has to say about it, but he is currently considerably behind and has almost no campaign structure. This is like NASA announcing in January of 1969 that they hadn't broken ground on a launch pad, but don't worry, we're going to the moon in July. Ok, we'll see.

There are two problems with that notion. One, if Hillary wins, she'll replace Antonin Scalia. That's basically game over, as whatever reforms conservatives manage to push through in the future will simply be declared unconstitutional. So, even if they were right, their victory would be meaningless. Two, they aren't right. The divide will only widen. And there's no reason it shouldn't. Again, as soon as Hillary gets that SCOTUS replacement, the game is well and truly up. Conservatism, Trumpism, nationalism, etc. will all dwell entirely within the realm of the abstract, having no chance of impacting policies ever again.
This really is it. This is the big one. Do or die.
Trump has made it harder to come together than it needs to be. I'll grant that. But so have his critics. I'm a fan of his, and I'm trying. I think he finally is, too.

I don't know what to tell you, except that it has never been the case that pundits get fired if they pick the losing side. I understand that this is unusual in that they haven't thrown their support behind someone they don't like just because he is a Republican (although you could counter-argue that in those other cases, the candidate actually was, and is not today), but that has nothing to do with my point: It is not, and has never been, some rule that you lose your pundit job if you don't pick the winner. 2. Trump hasn't focused on raising money, or on building a campaign organization. Traditional/conventional political thinking is that that's madness.
Perhaps that thinking is right, and Trump is an idiot. OTOH, he's not running a traditional/conventional campaign, either. He may know what he's doing (I have no idea), and if he does, and it works, he's a genius. So far he's handily confounded all pundits and naysayers.
Traditional/conventional thinking is that the British would easily subdue the colonists, and that the US would defeat the VC and NVA. And militarily, we did. But we still lost the war.
Having more troops, more weapons, like having more money in a campaign, may not be the decisive factor in determining the outcome of the conflict.
Again, I have no idea whether Trump has a clue or not, but I wouldn't dismiss him out of hand for not following the tried and true playbook. He hasn't followed it so far, and he's seen off a boatload of competitors.

This is a bit much, no? Trump has repeatedly defended the 2nd Amendment and promised to repeal ObamaCare. Even if he's made contradicting statements in the past, it's in his rational interest to hold to his campaign platform. Mitt Romney's flip flops did not prevent you from supporting him for the same reason, and I see no reason they should stop you from supporting Trump. In any case, the health of the 2nd Amendment depends entirely upon whether Hillary replaces Antonin Scalia. Trump's list of SCOTUS nominees is solid, in case you haven't seen it.

I've said it before - I have already lost. The "election" is over, no matter the total, the government workers will ensure that my vote will never count again.
I do not believe (and there is sufficient evidence for this) that the election in 2012 was "fair" - the vote totals were what was needed to keep the O in power and the checks in the pockets of the FEC workers (like Lois Lerner was, before she moved over to the IRS).
The last true election we had was ~maybe~ 2008.
Voting (as I've posted for the last three years) in the US is a fake. If we had a chance it was long dead by the time Trump won California.

Instead, I'd do the Obama "rope-a-dope" and stick to sloganeering and ambiguous and/or self-contradictory statements.
Now Trump's probably not doing that for tactical reasons, but it would be a smart thing to do. An honest statement of policies: "I'll rescind Obamacare, cut entitlement spending, cut spending on education, eliminate all the LGBTQCIANFLMVP shit, kick out every mother-lovin' Muslim who breaks wind off-key, enforce immigration law to the letter, etc." would guarantee electoral disaster.

They really do dislike Trump and while I have some sympathy for their arguments, they have not formulated a realistic plan for both not having either Trump or Hillary in office. The time for them to show this venom and vim was a year ago. But they placed their hopes in two bad actors:
Bush was a non starter from the start. There was no way he would not have been able to withstand the firestorm from the left considering he could not weather the far more tepid one from the right before buckling like a belt.
Rubio? Rubio was a good candidate who had made decisions to stand for things that the primary voters found to be anathema. If, after his boneheaded cozy-up to Schumer showed itself to be a disaster, he had spent the next 6 years doing everything he could to show he saw the error of his ways, he might have stood a chance, but he wasted his powder before it was dry. I am all for redemption but you do not come back from some things and expect all to be forgiven after such a short time.
At this point, I think a lot of this is them trying to change the outcome at the convention, in the belated and wrongheaded belief that that will get them what they want- A different candidate from their side in the White House. Note that I do not think they actually want Hillary in office, but that they are firmly in "cut off your nose to spite your face" land. There is a reason we have that expression.

I'm almost there with you on this. There is too much use of legal terms "Illegal war"/"Not my president"/"The Supreme Court selected Bush" when we are talking about political preferences, but I really think it can be said that if the IRS scandal, and now Hillary's scandals, were not being covered up in broad daylight, Obama and Hillary would be legally barred from holding office. It's irrefutable in Hillary's case, and in Obama's case requires believing that he knew nothing about the IRS situation (that's an extreme stretch), and that his refusal to appoint an independent prosecutor to investigate was not a cover-up (which is self-evidently bullshit).

I had bought a house from a 'Cruz' family before the 2010 census, received two forms by mail, only returned one. Census worker showed up and noted that I hadn't returned both forms and assured me they would get rid of the redundant form once I sent both in... so that one address has 20 hispanic asian native americans living there... unless they got rid of the extra form.
What fraud could you get out of that?
Maybe when to stop adding your own ballots at 100% of potential voters.
They did have a few districts go above 100% of registered voters for Obama, not a single vote for Romney, but still a few for Libertarian, Green, etc.

To be fair to Trump, as much as I dislike the douche, this does not necessarily mean he is talking to them about DOING this, but about the situation in general.
It is a kind of Rorschach statement- people take what they want to. To pro gun people, he could mean he is talking to the NRA about how to defeat it. To anti-gun people, he could be laying down the law about what he is going to do.
It is politically savvy to not alienate anyone. The problem is, pro-2nd people re so damn distrustful at this point that the only response they really want him to make to questions like these is "Go fuck yourself. Next!"

I didn't think RWR was all that conservative. Just rational. Planned Parenthood killed a lot of babies while RWR was President. I don't think a conservative president is possible because spending more money is so seductive. RWR policies created a lot of wealth but Federal Government spending grew % wise more than GDP during RWR terms. RWR has just been the most conservative President in comparison to the others since Washington. Washington really was the most conservative. Been downhill since the founding.

I do not like this jettisoning of people that I actually like either. There are several across the internet that I read daily who are in the NeverTrump crowd- James Lileks and Moe over at Moelane.com primarily among them.
I can understand not wanting to vote for Trump for ideals. That is fine. My point is that these guys seem to not have a better plan than trying to get Trump elected, even though he is a douchebag. I'm honestly perplexed at what qualities of anything I've written say "Troll". I've given reasons for everything I've said, except of course for the obvious parody of someone else's comments.
It is fair to say that NeverTrump has not presented a viable alternative to Hillary. That wasn't the argument made in the original post. It was the classic Trump supporter thing where anyone who criticizes them has nefarious reasons. The internet is full of this, and we are all aware that there are apparently a fair amount of people who take it further ( "You're a jewwwwww" type stuff). On the other hand, perhaps Will doesn't feel like he needs to offer an alternative to Hillary to be against Trump. You could very reasonably hold the view that he views a Hillary win as a very bloody battle that the conservative movement will need to recover from, and a Trump win as the conservative movement strapping on a dynamite vest to take out Hillary, forever destroying itself so that Trumpism (whatever that is) can reign. I think that is an extremely realistic fear. I have to weigh it against the fear that electing Hillary is establishing the principle of the President being above the law. It's a shit position to be in, no?
As far as the venom I'm experiencing...well, I guess people can call me ChemJeff all day, because I have no idea who that is, and probably never will. It's more the stupidity. It really is a bunch of "Murica Great Again Cucks Will is a queer with a bowtie!" attitude, and that's too bad.

This is an observably false statement in a number of ways. Just to name a few, Donald Trump supported the Brits leaving the EU, Donald Trump has crafted a terrific list of SCOTUS nominees, Donald Trump is opposed to Obama's executive amnesty, Donald Trump expands the Overton Window on free speech issues, Donald Trump will be held accountable by the media whereas Hillary will not be, Donald Trump did not violate federal law, and Donald Trump did not get anyone killed in Libya and then blame it on a video.
Those are just a handful of the differences. And those alone are more than enough.

Trump's not being dumped at the convention. Whether he should be dumped is academic.
Electing Hillary is the end. It's impossible to come back from it, even if you believe Trump is a phony. I don't think he is, but it wouldn't matter if he was for some fairly obvious reasons, not the least of which is that his opponent is Hillary and that electing him--whatever his actual nature--is a rebuke to a cadre of faux elites who severely need a rebuke.

Should the terms "conservative" and "conservatism" be jettisoned completely?
Or, at the very least, should we be less concerned about box checking when it comes to what counts as a "conservative" and what doesn't?
I mean, it just seems to me that an ideology in which supporting imminent domain (unless you're George Bush) and being a general cad (unless you're Rick Wilson) are more grievous sins than supporting Marco Rubio's immigration bill is one that oughtn't be taken so seriously.

In Feb and March, the logical #neverTrump thing was to support the only candidate who could stop Trump - CRUZ.
But we had squeamish establishment types and Kasich and Rubio hanging around too long.
Now, there is only on logical play left - free the delegates and dump Trump at the convention. The plain fact is 40% of GOP primary voters, many of the them not even Republicans, voted for a fraud. A fraud who is now an unfit, loose cannon unelectable anchor on the whole GOP ticket.
The ballsy, bad-ass, rip-the-heart-out-of-Hillary thing to do is FIRE THE CANDIDATE pronto and get a sub in. Walker, Perry, some Gov not tainted by Trump or the establishment too much, enough to appeal to the party broadly.
Will Trumpsters hate it? Yes, but so what. Trump is unelectable to the max, and Trump supporters are idiots to think he has a chance. We have a better chance with another candidate.
Alas, squishy GOP establishment don't have cohones to pull it off. Sure, they would do an amnesty cram-down, but they wont mess with a loser candidate who intimidates others wantonly. So they'll babble about how the 40% for Trump means 'will of the people', never mind that the will of 48% of Republicans is to get another nominee, and majority of voters dislike Trump with a passion and will never vote for him.
Dumping Trump at the convention is the only #neverTrump position that doesn't lead to Hillary as President.
Dumping Trump at the convention is the ONLY WAY to stop Hillary from becoming President.

Cruz raised more money than ANY OTHER GOP candidate, and it wasn't the donor class, but the smaller donors - Cruz got over 1 million separate donations.
Cruz is in a huge position now as leader of the conservative movement.

he has a LOT of company in that. Trump has 70% unfavorables and Hillary 55%. almost half of Republicans want a better nominee and the 3rd party candidates are doing better than in decades.
Trump is the only candidate the GOP who could lose to Hillary. Amazing! It's almost like Bill Clinton ordered him up!

Dump Trump and nominate a sane governor who can appeal to the conservatives and wider party alike, like Scott Walker, and the polls will get 10 pts better.
The Trumpster dumpster folks are victims of a con and will be hopping mad. but the worst case is they throw the election to Hillary ... which is what will happen with Trump as nominee anyway. So no downside, only upside.
