Quote of the Day I - Failure to Heed Market Signals Edition

The percentage of new doctorate recipients without jobs or plans for further study climbed to 39% in 2014 from 31% in 2009, according to a National Science Foundation survey released in April. Median salaries for midcareer Ph.D.s working full time fell 6% between 2010 and 2013.

The reason: supply and demand.

Quote of the Day II - A Matter of Faith Edition

Former President Bill Clinton said Tuesday that more people would have died in the terrorist attack at a nightclub in Orlando over the weekend if clubgoers had been armed and shot back at the lone gunman.

In an interview with Bloomberg TV, the former president was asked to respond to Donald Trump's claim that fewer people would have died at the club if they had firearms.

"Did you see how dark it was?" Clinton said. "It's likely that more people would have been killed."

Funny the killer seemed to have no problem with finding and shooting people in the dark.

Attorney General Loretta Lynch: Orlando Gunman's Motive May Never Be Known

I can't help but be reminded of this classic AoS thread:

The Words That Come Out Of His Mouth: The Secret Source Of What A Man Is Really Trying To Tell You!

What Really Happened During the Orlando Shootings - a Time Line

  • 2:02 a.m.: OPD call transmitted multiple shots fired at Pulse nightclub.
  • 2:04 a.m.: Additional OPD officers arrived on scene.
  • 2:08 a.m.: Officers from various law enforcement agencies made entrance to Pulse and engaged the shooter.
  • 2:18 a.m.: OPD S.W.A.T. (Special Weapons & Tactics) initiated a full call-out.
  • 2:35 a.m.: Shooter contacted a 911 operator from inside Pulse.

One interesting note from this is that police were already engaged in a firefight with Mateen within 6 minutes of the shooting being reported. But when they realized they were outgunned and he retreated inside, they called out the SWAT team.

And during calls with negotiators Mateen claimed to have a suicide vest and have bombs planted in the building and his car:

"There is some vehicle outside that has some bombs, just to let you know. You people are gonna get it, and I'm gonna ignite it if they try to do anything stupid." Later in the call with the crisis negotiator, the shooter stated that he had a vest, and further described it as the kind they "used in France." The shooter later stated, "In the next few days, you're going to see more of this type of action going on." The shooter hung up and multiple attempts to get in touch with him were unsuccessful.
  • 4:21 a.m.: OPD pulled an air conditioning unit out of a Pulse dressing room window for victims to evacuate.

And here one survivor who played dead even after being shot a second time by Mateen describes what was happening in the club during this time:

With the sounds of Mateen still shooting and the screams echoing in the club, Marrero stayed as perfectly still as he could and he estimates 30 to 40 minutes went by. He saw the shooter walking over the bodies on the floor and shooting them again, presumably to make sure they were dead.

This is when he shot Marrero again, hitting his lower back and his left arm. Now this young man was on the floor with four gunshot wounds. "I just lay there and all the blood coming out of my hand, and my arm was destroyed," he said. "The amount of pain was unbearable."

He said while the shots were still going off, he made eye contact with a police officer through the front door. He said he pleaded for help. The officer told him to crawl to him, but Marrero couldn't and told the officer he was shot in the back.

The officer told Marrero, "You need to find the strength to do this." Using his right arm he grabbed onto the dead bodies giving himself the leverage to push himself towards the officer. The cop grabbed him by the hand and quickly dragged him away from the club and to a vacant lot where paramedics were set up and eventually got to him.

Here the pseudonymous LAPD officer, Jack Dunphy, weighs in on the Orlando police's actions that morning:

And in those hours before the final confrontation came at about five in the morning, the police faced an agonizing dilemma: Should they move in and risk a gun battle that would jeopardize more innocents, or should they wait it out in the hope of a surrender? But this second option carried its own risks. Mateen might have resumed shooting at any moment without warning, or he may have detonated the explosives he claimed to have. What's more, during a protracted siege, people already wounded and hoping for rescue might bleed out and die.

There is no easy answer in this situation. Officers on the scene must rely on incomplete and sometimes conflicting information. In the panic and chaos that greeted the first arriving officers in Orlando, there must have been varying accounts on the number of shooters and their whereabouts within the club. Adding to the confusion, officers from all over the city and beyond rushed to the scene, few of whom had had the opportunity to work or train together before. Patrol officers are accustomed to handling things alone or in pairs; unlike their counterparts in SWAT, they are seldom called upon to act as a cohesive unit.

Greg Gutfeld on Orlando: The Most Depressing Article You Will Ever Share

Dumbest Criminals of the Year So Far

Port Authority Police Department Superintendent Michael A. Fedorko said that 50-year-old John Cramsey, 52-year-old Dean Smith and a 29-year-old woman were taken into custody after they were stopped around 7:40 a.m. in Jersey City, N.J.

Officials found multiple weapons -- some loaded -- including rifles and handguns in their vehicle, described by a law enforcement source as a "jacked up SUV."

The vehicle, a Dodge truck, also bore the name Higher Ground Tactical, an indoor shooting range and gun dealership in Upper Milford Township, Pa., WNBC-TV reported.

...The trio, from Pennsylvania, initially was stopped by Port Authority Police at a toll plaza for a cracked windshield, authorities said. An officer saw the weapons in plain view on the passenger side of the vehicle.

Drugs were also recovered from the vehicle, which has been cleared from the scene but is still being processed for evidence.

On Crime Denialism

Anyone who has been dispassionately following crime trends over the past couple of years will have noticed a curious pattern: Despite clear evidence that homicide rates surged in the last twelve months, in what is quite likely the biggest single-year spike in a generation, many journalists and number crunchers seem determined to communicate to their readers that there is nothing unusual going on-that crime rates remain at historic lows and that any talk of "rising crime" is demagoguery intended to smear racial justice protestors and torpedo criminal justice reform.

77 There is no easy answer in this situation. Officers on the scene must rely on incomplete and sometimes conflicting information. In the panic and chaos that greeted the first arriving officers in Orlando, there must have been varying accounts on the number of shooters and their whereabouts within the club.

See, this is the thing: That ambiguity and fog of war the police were experiencing didn't exist inside the club, where the victims watched the killer walking around with a rifle and shooting whoever was near. And yet the Great Bill Clinton, He of commendable vigor, declares that more people would have died if those victims in that unambiguous moment between life and death had been armed.

Right. I'm sure that's exactly why mass killers throughout recent history have picked out gun ranges and Friends Of NRA dinners as the venues for their attacks in order to maximize casualties.

79 48 IIRC, I'd read that SOP now for law enforcement in mass shootings with hostages is to engage at once with whatever resources one has at the time... I still can't understand the delay. Did they fuck up out of ignorance, incompetance, or cowardice?

I suspect that it was because they were caught between treating it as an active shooter situation (go in quickly) or a hostage standoff (play for time) along with the possibility of a Brussels bomber scenario. In retrospect I think Mateen's call to 9-11 before SWAT arrived really disrupted their plans because it pushed them into viewing it as a hostage negotiation type situation early on.

So, the initial rumor was not all that far from the truth. Three (presumably) muzzie yutes raped a 5 year-old girl, without using a knife, although the possibility remains open that some other weapon was used.

So basically rumor got the yutes' nationality wrong. But with "Syrians" figuring prominently in the news right now, prolly any skeevy muzzies are automatically thought to be Syrian.

Did the raped little girl have a Dad living at home? I'm sort of wondering if that apartment block is a Section 8 wonderland?

Look I have plenty of unflattering things to say about shit ROE, idiotic PC, Federal failures etc etc....

I've only ever been shot at once by a mass of gunfire and a couple of shots two other times.

I was 11, unarmed, and in a crowd of kids a dumbass was shooting through to try to hit a guy who stole his drugs and money....

I grabbed two younger kids, and ran them to safety and went back two times.

Nope. You never forget what the force now calls "battlemind" and I am NOT a combat veteran I imagine for those guys it is cranked to 10. Obama added "veteran" to "terror indicators" because he is a shithead but law enforcement is and has been nervous about military veterans since at least the First World War....look at Verne Miller for starters.

It's not a matter of being "superman" it is a matter of having a different binary impulse decision making tree than untrained people.

1) is there a threat?

2) am I equipped to interdict?

3) what will work run or gun?

The tree is different.

Somehow Amarillo PD managed to retire THEIR Sudeen Jihadist Syndrome candidate quicker.

There are of course some inarguable differences.

1) the Somali was not as well trained as Federal Contracts epowered G4S(nee Wackenhut) to train Mateen

2) the Somali was not a splodey dope Maet

3) Amarillo PD's on site officers maintained tactical control of the Somali by refusing to cede space.

There are several I would hope uncontroversial avenues of inquiry on other differences.

4) differences in departmental doctrine?

5) the impact of political correctness on the two dpeartments

6) any political pressures involved.

I am not besmirching OPD other than to say the notion one aggressor witrh a single Carbine and Pistol even with "splodey doping" outguns the Orlando Patrol response.

Look I challenge ANYONE causally dismissing the OPD's bravery to go to a tavern or night club and look hard at the entry/egress points and think "man approaching a trained marksman through these killpoints is cakewalk"

When I first left my military service I could juggle a 2*4 with an SKS sporter D to a slow five count....

with my M-96 swede I could break broomsticks Iron sight more than 80% accurately at 50 paces.

Nothing was easy that night BUT Maet we have interdicted worse situations more ably in the past.

The first and most effective clusterfuck that directly caused the slaughter's horrific extent was that the venue was "gun-free". If even 1% of the 300 people in the club were armed, the number of total casualties would have likely been +/-20 -- with maybe as few as 5 fatalities. [You don't leave perforated people lying on the ground for 3 hours without significantly enhancing fatalities.]

How much you wanna bet he was sporting a set of Peltor or Howard Leight, noise cancelling electronic headsets?

And how much do you wanna also bet, that there's hardly a SWAT team out there that uses the higher end ones, in conjunction with interface to the secure PD scrambled channels?

224 Anyone with any degree of experience can recognize the sound of gunfire. It was certainly evident to those in and around the club. I have now idea how many rounds the guy fired, nor whether they were in bursts with long lapses, or fairly continuous, but any thinking person would have figured that people were dying inside.

Three hours is two hours and fifty five minutes too long. I acknowledge that the cops were probably intimidated, but the mindset to deal with that is supposed to be a distinction between a cop and a bystander.

I suppose that in the fullness of time this will all be sorted out, we shall see. I'm only surprised that this hasn't happened before. It is almost impossible to guard against.

231 This has nothing to do with the OPD situation, but I've been wondering about it since it was revealed the jihadi had been investigated by the FBI two times previously.

What, specifically, could the feds or local law enforcement actually *do* about this guy, even if they thought he was dangerous? Were there any charges that could have been brought to hold/harass/delay/distract him, based on what we know about his actions? Had be broken any laws prior to his atrocity?

This is pertinent to the cosmic, "the feds dropped the ball" issue, as the jihadi had been on a watch list.

Though by this point, obviously, the Congress and the judiciary would surprise no sensible observer if they actually trashed the elements of the former constitutional order pertaining to detention, assumption of innocence, etc. - they haven't done so yet. So how would this guy be arrested or detained prior to the atrocity?

Just wondering, replaying this scenario, what the FBI could have/should have done.

1) Omar Mateen was making threats starting in the 3d grade.

2) Mateen is on his permanent record known to have wildly celebrated the WTC imploding.... you know where he was? NYC

3) Mateen was investigated 2 times by an FBI CT Intel team WRT no less than six incidents of overt violent threats made at G4S(nee Wackenhut) dismissing reports of his temperment b/c "wacist"

4) Mateen was reported to be attempting to acquire body armor and I will be shocked if he was not trying to get trauma bags with sulfa and other battlefield medical gear.

Now WRT Item 3 Obama removed "Jihad" and "Islam" from CT Intel theory....

Could we at least start with adding those two words back in, and you know MAYBE NOT HAVING JIHADISTS WORKING GODDAMNED DHS SECURITY CONTRACTS?

You carry a Series G license at the leisure of the state...if I threatened a St Lucie deputy on a Florida Series G license I'd be done...my ticket would be yanked.

280 sven, I obviously wish that this and similar cases had options for law enforcement to pre-empt the attacks, I was just asking what, specifically, could have been done, if this guy had not committed any crimes before his big one.

There might have been multiple angles that might have been worked, but I'm not familiar with them.

Just wondering how, in the absence of law-breaking along the way, the good guys can pre-empt these attackers.

The very troubling pattern this guy painted, apparently since childhood, was sufficient to deny employment or access or things like that, but that's a far cry from arresting and detaining him. Which is what I'm talking about.

I think it is far more likely that he got the standard Faust treatment -- he goes to Saudi Arabia, comes back with a compliant hot wife, has a son, gets some spending money, and -- after a couple of years -- his debt is called and he's a martyr.

Posted by: cthulhu at June 22, 2016 01:31 AM (EzgxV)

282 Things could have been done in the long phase; during the investigations, after trips to Saudi, after he pops up trying to buy body armor. but, weren't. Its a numbers game, and they are swamping us.

In the terminal phase. His wife could have made a call. His brother-in-law could have considered a 195K gift of his house, odd. Im sure some of fellow kneelers at that radical mosque had some idea and could have made a call. Maybe Disney could have pushed harder on the buttons after he crossed into their AO.

On the scene, the initial cops could have pressed. The SWAT team could have rolled in immediately. One patron or bartender could have had a pick Ladysmith.

Afterwards, our betters in politics and the media could stop lying to us and concealing key facts --- who the fuck am I kidding.

Well, I have never seen one up close with the original engine. This bike has the telescopic front forks; they abandoned the leading link for this model because not enough suspension travel. This bike came to me with a late-'60's Kawasaki 350 rotary-valve two-stroke in it, missing its engine side covers. And the engine is just bodged in there. I figured the original engine was a Villiers 2-stroke, but I had a knowledgeable bike guy look at it, and he recorded the numbers, and told me tonight on the phone it's a '69 Griffon, and came with the 380 Griffon engine.

In my younger days of milk, honey, and sin, the Yacht thing involved capsules of MDMA (extasty) that they brought via the ultra rich kids girlfriend and they inserted them via the rectum once out in the water . They were like tan nude moaning and touching and kissing for 3 days at sea. We drank beer and took Viagra for 3 days and joined in when invited but mostly directed and watched. It's not like Eyes Wide Shut. It's a bunch of hot Rollin girls constantly moaning and touching each other, fetching us beers, and throwing us in the middle of a few in the private rooms below when they want to bang.

So when you see very hot girls on a Yacht in pictures with some dude or two, that's what is going on. The girls are wasted and playful. The guys are living like Kings.

I only had that one experience and I threw a semester away for it by skipping finals. it was worth it at the time but I would not do it again now or back then. Once was enough. I honestly thought I would die if I was out there one more day.

Playing King was tedious work.

That just got me. How the hell did that happen... And to top it off, she's a hottie, and there I was having impure thoughts about a good buddy's niece.

How awful I was, and to top off, I'm sure she thought of me as "dad" speed, one of uncle's buddies. Life is some shit, ain't it. Time, it's always moving.

Cth - HA! Add it to his rent? He's so far behind the 8 ball that I'm only letting him cut grass to work off a little debt. I have blown so far past my "cut-off point" that it's a joke.
I'm so close to 50 that I can kick it in the ass, and I've never bent a lawnmower blade. Second time he used my mower - yep, he bent the blade beyond recognition.

New blade, full tune-up, and a couple weeks later he's clearing acreage of waist-high blackberries like he's in control of a Skag walk behind. And thinks he did me a favor...

The berries will come back, but IIRC, it'll take 2 years to produce fruit.

418 Trump says "we don't know nothing about Hillary's religion". Well I do. Over the years she has demonstrated over and over again her only religion is making money and running for more and more power. She does on occasion carry a bible as a prop, but it is really only there should she need to demonstrate her irrational temper.

419 We knew it was coming. Michigan's Republican governor just signed a bill for almost $1T to bail out Detroit's failing schools. I can not count the number of times that Detroit's schools and the city itself have been bailed out by taxpayers outside of Detroit but none of them have EVER worked because they never address the problems that created their bankrupt city in the first place. The first thing they need to do is make it illegal for a Democrat (or former Democrat) to ever be Mayor of Detroit.

425 And more in late added story at Fox.

A moderate Republican senator sought broad bipartisan support Tuesday for a compromise to block gun purchases by some suspected terrorists, a day after the chamber split along party lines to derail far more sweeping proposals.

The typical "moderate" Republican as defined by the MFM, including Fox, means a DIABLO who votes with the Democrats more than Republicans. In this case that is well illustrated because the "moderate" described here is Susan "I kiss Democrat Ass" Collins. She typically has an ACU rating in the low to mid 20s which means she is really a Democrat with an R after her name. IOW a firm DIABLO. And no Fox, this is NOT a bipartisan bill. The only Republicans supporting it are the typical DIABLOs and RINOs.

If you already have a power cable ran to the site that should be a real easy job taking only a few minutes. I have actually put one up here. But I recommend that you don't put up a motion detector light. Use a photocell fixture and just let in come on at dusk and go off at dawn. I wound up taking my motion detector light down because no matter where I adjusted the sensitivity I could not get it to work right. I am happy with the photocell unit though.

If it is underneath an eave it doesn't really need to be water tight. Just have the connections made with those twist on electrical connectors and then wrap it in electrical tape. If it is mounted on a pole or the side of a building not under an overhang then you can get water proof junction boxes that you can make the connections in and put a water proof cover on it.

449 No shortage of "carpenters" or "electricians" here. They're mostly out of work, collecting either their union benefit or (seasonal) unemployment. They aren't supposed to do "side jobs," so, they don't. You can't hire one out of The Hall; the deal has to be with a certified Union employer, and, they won't bid small jobs. Catch-22.

This isn't a college education issue. These guys were well indoctrinated in the union trade school. They're the specialest snowflakes of all. And, of course, disabled. Just ask 'em. The sudden closure of the universities won't solve this. It will take a generation of grinding poverty with no safety net. Hold your breath.

I've been trying for two years to get a simple cut-out switch and generator plug installed. One, count 'em one, company would come out to work up a bid. Told me I needed an all new service box in a new location, had to move the A/C, and really should have an all-automatic yuppifier natural-gas generator. I told them, OK, work up the bid. They never called back. Situation is hopeless within the system. Sooner or later I'll just do it myself.

450 While on subject, the biggest thing with outdoor light controls is SPIDERS.
I've never had a solar-sensor work for more than a season. Little buggers will get in through silicone-sealed, fully torqued box plugs, and web the hell out of that interior space. The switch thinks it's night. So you have to open them up several times a year and remove the webs. You do this in your spare time.

As the Lucas engineer said, "That's odd. It worked fine on the test bench."

ABC News has an "expose" up on Female Genital Mutilation. Easy to find. Check it out and note what ISN'T mentioned anywhere, coupled with this colossal twist of truth:

"Officially linked"? Maybe not. But linked nonetheless. It also implies that run-of-the-mill Indians practice this.

ABC is not allowing comments on the preview page for this article or at the article itself, even though the preview page has comments for the articles above and below this one. Wonder why that could possibly be.

456 Stringer,

Here in Houston we really do have a shortage of "good workers". I'm in the engineering side of the construction business and deal we deal with lots of major contractors. The problem is that they can't get anyone (entry level kids) who want to actually WORK for their paycheck. So they are forced to pay more for the experienced guys/subcontractors and that drains the pool for residential work.

Just trying to get some one to repair a pipe in the attic, or run a new electrical circuit in the attic is almost impossible. And even if you do, the work is done half-a$$ed by special snowflakes, or more likely illegals who don't speak a word of English and don't give a $hit.

It drives me crazy!
