400 Puffed-Up, Egotistical Blow-Hard Writers Think They Have Influence [CBD]

More Than 400 Writers Sign Petition Protesting Donald Trump

A group of more than 400 writers, including big names such as Stephen King, David Eggers, Amy Tan, Junot Diaz and Cheryl Strayed, released an online petition on Tuesday to express their opposition to Mr. Trump’s candidacy on the grounds that he is appealing to the darkest elements in American society.

I have read a few of the writers who have signed this petition, and I am not particularly impressed, although Stephen King's early stuff is excellent. But the quality of their writing is secondary to the fact that their rejection of Donald Trump will, if anything, endear Trump to his base. How many Americans really give a rat's ass what a few big writers and hundreds of anonymous hacks think about a candidate for president?

Hell, I am no Trump fan, but anyone who Amy Tan and Stephen King don't like is going to get an appreciative look from me. And David Eggers is just an asshole.

But what is really marvelous is that their criticism of Trump can be applied essentially word for word to Barack Obama. Just take a look at it (below the fold). I defy anyone to find a single criticism in their blather that we have not pilloried Obama for.

AN OPEN LETTER TO THE AMERICAN PEOPLE

Because, as writers, we are particularly aware of the many ways that language can be abused in the name of power;

Because we believe that any democracy worthy of the name rests on pluralism, welcomes principled disagreement, and achieves consensus through reasoned debate;

Because American history, despite periods of nativism and bigotry, has from the first been a grand experiment in bringing people of different backgrounds together, not pitting them against one another;

Because the history of dictatorship is the history of manipulation and division, demagoguery and lies;

Because the search for justice is predicated on a respect for the truth;

Because we believe that knowledge, experience, flexibility, and historical awareness are indispensable in a leader;

Because neither wealth nor celebrity qualifies anyone to speak for the United States, to lead its military, to maintain its alliances, or to represent its people;

Because the rise of a political candidate who deliberately appeals to the basest and most violent elements in society, who encourages aggression among his followers, shouts down opponents, intimidates dissenters, and denigrates women and minorities, demands, from each of us, an immediate and forceful response;

For all these reasons, we, the undersigned, as a matter of conscience, oppose, unequivocally, the candidacy of Donald J. Trump for the Presidency of the United States.

....

You're absolutely right.

However, this isn't just cognitive dissonance on the part of the writers. One could also ask, in light of these correct assertion, why in the world would anyone support Trump (or Bernie, or Hillary, since it's all equally true of them)?

I've resolved myself since 2008 and it was reaffirmed in 2012 that the person who stokes the most outrage, promises the most free stuff and is considered the biggest celebrity will win from here on out. Any consideration about the actual role of the president, responsibilities, experience or record are unimportant.

Stephen King is such an insufferable d-bag.

His anti-2nd amendment comments are just as good. Funny too considering how much he's been pushing the Dark Tower Series and the Gunslinger creed that is a central point in the whole series

110 If Democrats didn't pit people against each other they wouldn't have a coalition. And it seems to me that they are demographically slicing the population into smaller and smaller segments to keep the whole scheme going and that it is starting to seize up.

Both the Democrats and the Republicans, the Left and the Right, are plumb out of ideas, like a Hollywood executive (I know! A female Ghostbusters!) and I think that this is part of the reason for the rise of Trump and Sanders.

A new alignment needs to come about and the old guard can't provide it.

118 I have read a few of the writers who have signed this petition, and I am not particularly impressed, although Stephen King's early stuff is excellent. But the quality of their writing is secondary to the fact that their rejection of Donald Trump will, if anything, endear Trump to his base. How many Americans really give a rat's ass what a few big writers and hundreds of anonymous hacks think about a candidate for president?

Ace, every single one of those writers is already a self-declared hard-left liberal SJW. Their opinions count only among silver-haired mid-sixties limousine liberals on the Upper East Side. It was always going to end this way you prattling know-it-alls. We've warned you of that since Bork. That the abandonment of all comity for political expediency would tear us apart, put us in an arms race of the detestable, and eventually vigorously climax in undulations of violent ideologues representing the rifts in American politics.

And you abided this growing monstrosity so long as it was consuming the correct people with rage, so long as its wrath was directed at your enemies. Now that it is taking it's final form, and you see our warnings turn to prophecy, it's only now you think to scream.

Too late. It is done. It will consume us all just as it rips us apart. And nothing can stop it now. Rejoice dark cultists, your god of hate has finally fully risen from the depths. Prostrate yourself before him and be devoured into the whole, as is your faith.

that men could govern themselves. That our rights are derived from God -

I do not think that was ever the intent, but if it was, it was an experiment that was foreknown to be an impossibility. Man cannot govern itself. American government (as it was envisioned) is simply the least bad of bad options.

Mankind will never be able to govern itself correctly. Hasn't happened, won't happen, not ever. God alone can govern this mess of insanity correctly.

About a rich retired couple who buy a sailboard and go sailing as a lifestyle, living aboard their boat. Anyway, the author is building up to a climatic heroic rescue of the wife who has fallen overboard during an ocean crossing, and I'm frantically turning pages right up to the point where I screamed, 'NOOOOOOOOO', and threw the book across the room, literally threw the book across the room where it remained for several days and then went into the trash. It was a good book! I just didn't like the ending.

My older brother had a book...it was an encyclopedia for youth kind of thing. A single volume. On the cover of the book was the word 'Knowledge'. My first grade self puzzled over that word for weeks "K-No-Ledge" it just didn't make sense, (and it didn't help that the small boy depicted on the cover was standing on the edge of a precipice)...then 'click'....Light Bulb Moment!
It was that moment that I bridged the gap between associating pictures with words, and relying on the words themselves. That's when I discovered books, and the first real books read where the ones I listed above.
