Yes, sales of single homes are up. I suspect Obama's illegal order to banks to finance minority loans that they can not cover has something to do with that.

RE: DUI train engineer.
But federal law doesn't require him to have a motor vehicle driver's license to operate a train. Something is fishy about this story. The feds may not require someone to hold a driver's license but the feds damn sure require train engineers, truck drivers. and bus drivers to meet fitness for duty requirements. One of those proviisons in my old rules for that is a suspension of permission to work if you failed a random drug or alcohol test or a positive test mandated after an accident. EZ Dog for this date in 1944
May 25, 1944 Exactly six months in the line ~ and what a "semi-versary". The 91st Recon from II Corps came breezing up Hwy 7 to meet the 36th Eng down by Littoria. There was great celebration and our boys took out. The 3d Div pushed up toward Cori, surrounded and finally isolated Cisterna, and went on towards Valmontone. Cori was reduced late in the afternoon. 1AD pushed well out to the North. Contact was lost at times, and the Arty had a tough job keeping up. All looks well. Rome may not be so far off. "What's striking, even to policy analysts who closely track the Iran debate' is how no one on any side is bothering to keep up pretenses"
--- Omni Ceran So right. The Obama administration must be figuring that prosperity will make the Iranians put pressure on their mullahs to moderate. Well, the Iranian population tried to pressure their rulers to moderate back in 2008-09 and Obama backed the Islamists instead. It was the single biggest screw-up of US foreign policy in the first term. Instead of moderating, the mullahs tortured and executed their political opponents. Why should anything be different now? How will prosperity and nuclear accommodation rectify the huge early Obama failure? Posted by: MTF at May 25, 2016 08:01 AM (/m8T6) 30

>>...and just like last time when the bubble bursts it will be the Republicans fault again. Yeah, rented "The Big Short" and noticed that - oddly - they didn't go into any detail on the government's role in the sub-prime load debacle; it was all the fault of greedy, stupid banks just giving out loans like candy to people w/no job/no income. Also didn't mention who was responsible for the 2008 bailout and subsequent lack of government interest in why the whole mess occurred. Being an Adam McKay movie, he would have gleefully hit the GOP hard had they been responsible for it. Posted by: Lizzy at May 25, 2016 08:15 AM (NOIQH) 57

Three points - "percentage gained" is nothing - hey, we went from 1 to 2, doubled sales!; house sales are still below the 05 to 08 levels; and lastly - does anyone believe any "big data" number from this Admin? That's the biggest single "event" from this Admin - the complete and utter erosion of Federal data. Even this "report" is all from "estimates" based on WH info. Good morning everyone,
Just returned from my annual denominational church meeting which contained great worship and most;y boring and some slightly contentious church meetings as well as ordinations-which are always nice. I avoided the whole discussion on white privilege and racism because I was actually having a great conversation unrelated to racism talking to a pastor who happens to0 be black. I said, "I think we're supposed to be in the big group meeting room talking about racism, Do you want to talk about racism? in there or here? (We were talking about his life and call to ministry at the time) and he said, "No" .Here is my gripe for the day. I don't want to go to individual church websites where the first thing I read out about one of the associate pastors is that "______'s passion is for social justice." Could you just tell me " _______ loves Jesus, the church and other people and is deeply committed to helping and empowerment ministries?" because now whenever I hear "Social Justice" I either tune out (which is not a good thing) or i feel like saying, "What does that exactly mean in your case?" which might sound rude. Ken Starr was doing a death penalty appeal. His investigator gave him affidavits from 6 of the trial jurors who had voted to impose the death penalty on the case saying they had changed their minds. Starr used these affidavits but the state recognized them as forgeries. Starr should have recognized them as forgeries, too. The investigator went to prison for it and Starr didnt even get reprimanded. What BS! This was a horrible murder. Posted by: Bruce With a Wang! at May 25, 2016 08:25 AM (iQIUe) 90
Last weeks unanimous passage of a Senate bill making it easier for 9/11 families to sue Saudi Arabia and other foreign terror sponsors was widely heralded as a major victory.
Its more of a cruel hoax. It turns out that just before the vote, Sen. Charles Schumer and other proponents of the Justice Against Sponsors of Terrorism Act stuffed an amendment into the final draft allowing the attorney general and secretary of state to stop any litigation against the Saudis in its tracks. Yes, JASTA would remove the statutory restrictions that have prevented 9/11 families from taking the Saudi kingdom to court. But Schumer helped craft an entirely new section to the original bill, giving the Justice and State departments the power to stay court action indefinitely. All they have to do is inform the judge hearing the case that the US government has engaged with Riyadh in diplomatic talks to resolve the issue. Not surprised..I hate all of them Posted by: Nevergiveup at May 25, 2016 08:25 AM (Ozsfq) 91

We were reading about this the other day at our house:
"But social justice is not justice at all, because it is anti-personal. The requirements of justice are the requirements of the second table of the law [Commandments 5-10], that man's life, home, property and reputation be respected in word and deed. Social justice denies the integrity of life, home, property and reputation in the name of classes of men, of men as a body (and 'men as a body' means 'the state')." /R.J. Rushdoony "The Politics of Guilt and Pity" Providing for the general welfare (as opposed to promoting it), subjugates individual justice. And civil justice, at the end of the day, should be about man's relationships and responsibilities toward other men. Posted by: Seamus Muldoon at May 25, 2016 08:45 AM (NeFrd) 144

I had a cataract removed from my left eye (20-400) about six weeks ago. It wasn't bad, however, I was a bit disappointed with the results. Others I knew who had them removed had great distance vision afterward. I turns out that if you has Lasik they have to guesstimate your replacement lens. Your vision typically doesn't improve as much as if you hadn't had Lasik. The good news is that it looks like I've retained enough of my near vision in one eye that I won't need reading glasses. OTOH, I'll need glasses for really 20-20 distant vision. I'm hoping my right eye will come out as well. I can handle one pair of glasses (either reading or distant). I cannot, however, abide by bifocals or multi-focus lenses. I don't really need glasses now for driving where I'm familiar with the roads so now I'm glasses free. I'd love to be able to have 20-20 distant vision again, though, even if it meant wearing glasses. The best world would be to retain close vision in my right eye and my left eye correctable to 20-20. I'd buy a brick of .22 to celebrate that. Posted by: Ed Anger at May 25, 2016 08:57 AM (RcpcZ) 179

Posted by: Seamus Muldoon at May 25, 2016 08:56 AM (NeFrd) *** And the Jewish understanding of charity is really remarkably empowering. There are traditions that the community would find a reformed cut-purse or burglar and hire him to slip money into people's purses, or to sneak into their kitchens and fill up their oil and flour supplies. The idea was that the recipient had dignity, and this was a way of respecting it while also causing him to pause and reflect that he is provided for in ways he can never know. (And the Rambam argued, persuasively, that to provide the means - money or what-have-you - to allow a poor person to raise himself up - by engaging in business or practicing a trade, etc - was the highest form of charity.) The Rambam's Eight Levels of Charity (which isn't quite the word, but as close as we have in English for what is meant, from greatest to least:
Giving an interest-free loan to a person in need; forming a partnership with a person in need; giving a grant to a person in need; finding a job for a person in need; so long as that loan, grant, partnership, or job results in the person no longer living by relying upon others. Giving tzedakah anonymously to an unknown recipient via a person (or public fund) which is trustworthy, wise, and can perform acts of tzedakah with your money in a most impeccable fashion. Giving tzedakah anonymously to a known recipient. Giving tzedakah publicly to an unknown recipient. Giving tzedakah before being asked. Giving adequately after being asked. Giving willingly, but inadequately. Giving "in sadness" (giving out of pity): It is thought that Maimonides was referring to giving because of the sad feelings one might have in seeing people in need (as opposed to giving because it is a religious obligation). Other translations say "Giving unwillingly." Posted by: Your Decidedly Devious Uncle Palpatine, Still Accepting Harem Applicants at May 25, 2016 09:11 AM (lutOX) 195

The important concept - and one that is hard to explain - is that performing these commandments has no purpose beyond their performance. Effect, yes they have, but not a purpose, as to claim that would be to diminish the sovereignty and power of the Creator.
And it's emphasized, especially by the Rambam that these good effects are themselves proof of His wisdom, and that those who practice these virtues are in fact rewarded by their having developed the habits of virtue. That it helps a poor person is, of course, one of its effects, but the act and practice is in fact of benefit to the giver. A funny thing about the Rambam and his intellectual compatriots, adversaries, and critics - he had no peers... 'From Moses to Moses, there was non like Moses,' they say of him - is hat they were absoultely swimming in a sea of very highly-developed and profound philosophical thought, informed by Aristotelianism and Platonism, primarily as interpreted and explained by Muslim commentators. And it all fell away when 'the gates of interpretation' were closed.
And you mackerel-snapping stooges of the Roman Pope? Your Aquinas - who was no slouch as a thinker - started work on his Summa in large part in reaction to the vibrant critiques of Christianity put forward by the Muslim and Jewish philosophers. That is cukoo-cocoa puffs. And yes, juvenile. Posted by: Lizzy at May 25, 2016 09:36 AM (NOIQH) Well, if you accept the premise that gender is a social construct and defined by "gender roles" then it sort of makes sense if you tilt your head and squint. Personally, I think we lost the battle on this one when we stopped just referring to things as sex. Sex has a biological definition. Gender does not, and because it's defined by how you feel, not by anything measurable, it's not only non-falsifiable, it doesn't have a discrete set of possible values. >>Well, if you accept the premise that gender is a social construct and

Why can't a (heterosexual) woman be tomboyish, wear primarily jeans and t-shirts and do, say, outdoorsy stuff, and not be considered expressing a male gender/ "butch"; or a (heterosexual) man be interested in men's fashion, spend a lot of time on his appearance, etc. and not be considered expressing female gender? We're erasing the acceptable spectrum of male/female characteristics and saying certain likes/fashion choices/interests define one's gender. It's so wrong. Posted by: joe, living dangerously at May 25, 2016 09:22 AM (KUaJL) _________________________________________________ Perhaps it's in the revised 2nd Edition... Welcome back Fenlon. Part of the reason I/we are in the congregation we are now, IPspouse and I, is due to witnessing of the politicizing of her last church. She was quite taken aback when we received a mailer informing us that the congregation was voting, after several decades, to remove the "Evangelical" part of the name when they moved into the new "Plex". The details explained that they thought was it was limiting in their appeal to new members since those crazy Evangelicals are so polarizing you know. So, the "First Evangelical Free Church", overnight became the "First E Free", and officially became "Christ Community Church" by a somewhat heated vote. Politics became their identity and Social Justice became their cause from then on. We stopped going soon after. Oh yea, the new name and new fellowship halls (yes plural), came complete with rock bands and a light show. No, I'm not kidding, they warm up the crowd before the pastor arrives. Granted they are pretty fancy digs, but it became so antiseptic and felt fake. To each their own, yes, I can agree there. But, on my Sundays, give me tradition, and reverence, maybe a pipe organ and a choir. Preach a sermon and teach a bible lesson. Show me how to live, don't tell me. And, keep your bass riffs for Friday night. Posted by: IP at May 25, 2016 09:57 AM (aQQbl) 268

Re the Ken Starr thing, I have some insider info. They may be saying they're pulling the ripcord on him over the rape thing, but my impression is that it's been a long time coming.
Mr Y-not looked at an executive position there that was being handled by a search firm. The advertisement for the job (one of those 6 page prospectus types) was a little odd. It appeared, reading btwn the lines, that Starr had very particular work habits. In discussions with the firm it came out that Starr is a very difficult boss. Very capricious in his decision-making and work habits. Difficult for everyone to work with b/c his communications and work schedule were unpredictable. The type of guy who would be hard to reach, then call you in the middle of the night, irrespective of the urgency of the matter. He also had a rep for not taking counsel from his cabinet. Just a very willful, difficult man. In any event, 6 yrs is a pretty standard term for a university president. Probably time for them to move on and find a new leader. And, yes, as someone mentioned upthread, the University is currently not confirming reports he's been fired. It does sound like the Regents are discussing it, however. Single home sales are up because they are being bought by Real Estate Investment Trusts, and then converted into rentals.
Investors are putting money into REITs because they are aware that the stock market is being propped up by QE, and not by increased value. Anyone who owns a home is bombarded by buy offers from various REITs these days. Just investors hedging into something safe from a stock market crash.
