30 North Korea is believed to have placed a new, powerful midrange missile on standby for an impending launch, a news report said Tuesday.

The reported launch plans came two days after North Korea said it had successfully test-fired a ballistic missile from a submarine in a continuation of its weapons tests amid ongoing South Korea-U.S. military drills. Seoul officials said they could not confirm whether Saturday's test-firing was a success.

47 Re: the wife in the well...I had a flashback to my teen years when we lived in an old farmhouse in Warren County, OH. It was too far off the road for normal "water privilege," so we had to have a water man come once a week to deliver water into a deep well at the back of the house. One day when the well was almost empty, my stepdad climbed down there for some reason and found a dead raccoon floating on the water's surface. We had been drinking and using this dead raccoon water all week. As a teenaged girl, I about died.

49 There's a story in The Hill about how Tim Robbins (actor) is claiming that Bernie Sanders' losses are due to . . . voter fraud.

How can that be? The left has been assuring us for years that there is no such thing as voter fraud, and that even if it does exist, it is so small and insignificant as to be completely inconsequential in determining the outcome of elections. The U.S. electoral system is a model of efficiency and honesty! (At least, it is when the Dims' preferred candidate beats the Republican. When it's Hillary beating Bernie, that's a different story altogether, apparently).

74 Good morning, Morons!

Busy day for me to day, but I wanted to get the daily bit of polling goodness in here.

The polling Gods giveth and they taketh away. The Trump faithful can take heart in a very good poll from GW/Battleground that shows Trump only 3% behind Clinton. This replaces the PPP poll in the RCP average that was already the best recent poll for him. Significantly it didn't only show an erosion of support for Clinton (down to 46%) but also an increase for Trump (up to 43%).

The good news is tempered by a new USA Today/Suffolk poll that shows the typical poor performance for Trump, with Trump down 11%. We will need to see more polls to determine if the GW poll is the start of a trend, or an outlier.

Overall the average is now Clinton leading by 8.5%, however her level of support has also inched up closer to 50% (from 48.8% to 49%).

No changes in Congress with the Dems poised to pick up at least 3 in the Senate and 12 in the House.

85 So Time-Warner is selling out its cable/internet service. When they bought out my old cablecompany which had gone bankrupt because the owners taook all the money out of the till my local town went up ion their franchise fees. So of course they passed that on to all of their customers even though the vast majority of them did not live in the city. And added some aditional profit as well. That is when I dropped my cable TC, kept the internet, and went to satellite. Of course the satellite company raised their fees as well because "competition". Funny how going with the same exact satellite company that my younger brother has and the same package my rates were $20/month higher than his. His matched the local cable rates as mine do too.

But there is no illegal collusion there, not one once of corruption.

I'm not going to argue about the ethics, morality and temperament of people.

But the fact is, the system by which nominees are selected has been in place since the founding of the party. And the reason it's that way is for the same reason we are a republic and not a pure democracy. And that is because majoritarianism eventually degenerates into tyranny.

You may not like that, but that's the way it is. Because if it weren't that way, Al Gore would have been President and William Seward as well as Howard Taft (1952) would have been the nominee.

Yep. I vote that the next Republic have an Office of the Inquisition. Their job is to thoroughly investigate every elected and appointed official in the entire government, including fellow Inquisitors. Not for cause, but just to make sure that they're not engaging in anything hinky. Because if you're going to run for elected office or work for the government, you should be willing to submit yourself to scrutiny.

Anyone found to be guilty of any felony-level crime is automatically and immediately ejected from office, no matter what office.

Or change it from the inside. But decrying the rules as anti-democratic does not recognize that we do not live in a direct democracy, and thank God for that!

145 So Hastert was extorted. Then the Feds got suspicious because of the bank transactions. Then Hastert reported the extortion to the FBI. Hastert was then charged with structuring and publicly tried and convicted, without a judge or jury, of sex abuse. But he was extorted. The extortionist was never tried. Clearly, this was all about getting Hastert's head on a stick. David Geffen wanted a trophy and got it. But the extortionist is still out there. I love how the FBI "ruled out" extortion. It was just an out of court settlement. Really? $3.5M for damages? Not buying it. $3.5M is a lot of money. There is no reason to believe Hastert has much more than $10M. He's not rolling in Al Gore kind of money. The FBI and DOJ ignored the extortion so they could nail Hastert. Now they're being embarrassed by the extortionist, who is demanded the rest of his hush money. Maybe if they'd tried the extortionist on extortion instead of Hastert, the FBI and DOJ wouldn't be in the embarrassing situation of sitting idly by while the extortionist literally goes public with his extortion demands. The extortionist has really made a joke out of the FBI and DOJ. They deserve it, of course.

There are times that I thank the good Lord that kids were not in the cards for me. And as the days and months pass, sadly, I become even more grateful.

That's not to say I never wanted kids, it just never worked out for me. But man, what a fucked up world, and the way things are headed, it may end sooner than later.

Sorry to be a bummer, but it is what it is.

158 Found this in the comments of our local Fox station's article on the police quitting:

Here's what I glean from reading another story concerning the new
mayor. The town has a population of 700 people and she's building an
$800,000 town hall. Then she says the forthcoming facility, which should
be completed by Labor Day or early fall is quite modest, but Newberry
says the town can't afford a marshal's office. She say's we have to
spend the town's money the best we can.
Jane Newberry is the main
architect of a plan to promote Public Works Director Robert McArthur
into the new job as GMF Town Manager. Newberry played the main role in
developing a several year contract for McArthur and establishing the
duties of the job, which is being challenged by a citizens' referendum.
Newberry
has been sparking much heated discussion over the last year concerning
her use of social media and her supporting efforts to tighten up some of
its procedures, such as how citizen input is handled at local meetings,
and is not releasing certain confidential documents prior to a board hearing.

Amazing how little of this has been included in reports, eh?

Agreed. I would be foolish and naive in the extreme to disagree with that statement. But still, the same rules that were supposed to protect the GOP did not prevent Ronald Reagan from winning it.

What most are forgetting is that in the primaries, you are voting for DELEGATES. And each state has its own rules as to how those delegates are selected and then apportioned. It may be arcane, and it certainly does not preclude the GOP from really doing something underhanded in Cleveland, but the system is what it is and has been that way since 1860.

If Donald Trump thought he could win it all and not play by GOP rules, he might have made a grievous error. And to whine and bitch about "collusion" and "cheating" and "disenfranchising the voters" is disgusting and counterproductive in the extreme.

Maddening, really.

Well, new new Mayor, Jane Newberry, has been around for a while - this is a very local/inside baseball dispute being treated as if it's an isolated incident. From a local site:

A lifelong resident in the area, she was
first appointed to the board of trustees about 10 years ago, and has
served consecutively for the last decade as a trustee, mayor pro tem and
a liaison to nearly every city office. Newberry also boasts of her
long-time involvement in the community, going to school at Ute Pass
Elementary and graduating from Colorado College.

It seems to be about Newberry shifting responsibility for day-to-day operations of the small town from the board or trustees to the newly created town manager position. So, a power struggle.

It's counterproductive for our side.

I find Donald Trump a bloviating, low-brow charlatan. But I WILL VOTE FOR HIM if he gets the nomination.

If Ted Cruz gets it via a contested convention - a completely legitimate process that has been in place sine 1860 - WILL TRUMP SUPPORTERS VOTE FOR HIM?

That is the damage and that's what is counterproductive.

Posted by: J.J. Sefton at April 26, 2016 09:06 AM (p4UlV)

232 Here is my serious side:

I support Ted Cruz, and he has run a very good, orthodox political campaign. But orthodox means that to get into the interesting stuff you have to wait for the books to come out.

I write more about Donald Trump because he has run such an un-orthodox campaign and has gone so far with it - is it something only he can do, or can anyone else do this? Is the traditional rulebook only suspended, or has it been torn up?
That is interesting.

The Party Elites are also very orthodox and they have no idea how to fight Trump's campaign - really they do not. This has led them to act more wild and more shrill as the days have gone by and turned into weeks and months and "why won't the Trump campaign die like we said" turns into "we have to stop Trump" and then into "is there nothing that will stop the monster Trump".

The #NeverTrump plans go from implausible to cartoon super-villain as each one fails. I am at the point where I want to say to the party elites "why don't you sit down and have a nice cool beverage and let the campaigns work this out - you all are obviously not as powerful as you thought you were and if you keep this up you're only going to hurt yourselves and ruin what part of your reputation is left".

So yeah, I am at the point where I am more irritated at the party apparatus for stunning displays of incompetent arrogance than I am at any of the candidates running. And it takes some doing for the behind-the-scenes people to get noticed like that.

The whining and bitching about the rules has a purpose in Trump's un-orthodox campaign. If the rules are seen as being illegitimate then any victories achieved by rule manipulation will be seen as illegitimate. It is an uphill fight to win an argument that you played by the rules when the counter-argument is that the rules are rigged.

He's winning the propaganda war against the GOP leadership. No, I do not know how to win a propaganda war against Donald Trump - I wonder if anyone really does.

Here is an example: You have Trump saying the rules are illegitimate they are going to disenfranchise the primary voters; then you have RNC rules person Curly Haugland (great name - Boss Hogg) get up there and claim the votes mean nothing.

*double facepalm*

Why are they helping Donald Trump? They claim to be against him when everything they do backfires!

Hence, my irritation with the party leadership. They have this opportunity to prove that they have the skills to justify being in charge and blow the demonstration again and again.

309 Blind and deaf girl wasn't deaf. She had fluid in her middle ear (or as the poorly written story says, "she had water build-up in her inner ears"). It's not water, it's not in the 'inner' ear and it doesn't make one deaf from birth, although it does decrease hearing acuity. Needless embellishment of the story (IMO) because of course it sounds so much more dramatic to say 'blind and deaf'.

Emo-response should not trump objective reality. Not as bad as the "kindness cured my cancer" story from the other day, but...

YMMV.

Trump's general election message will be very simple. Hillary is the status quo and the insider, Trump is change and the outsider.

Trump will pick a few of the thousands of examples of the government doing incredibly stupid shit, wasting billions, and for good measure to insure big turnout, examples of how federal employees "work".

Hillary, having been a product of big government her entire life, will be forced to try to defend the indefensible. She'll be forced to campaign by video because the crowds will be so incensed personal appearances will be impossible.

Yes we absolutely are living in one of the most peaceful *eras of human history.* Because in any past era his weak, feckless leadership would have resulted in the country being invaded and enslaved. But we are not living in a peaceful time in modern history. And we have actually left behind a more peaceful segment, because of *his* worthless "leadership."

At the end of your first paragraph, I think you misspelled distressing as interesting.

And I agree with you. The party people need to treat Trumps tantrums the way you treat similar tantrums from 2 year olds. State the actual facts, Ignore him, and if he continues, smack him down (metaphorically of course). E.g., by proposing he give up all his extra delegates from winner take all states, then maybe we'll talk.

I don't know why anyone is paying attention to his wah-ing, this same person who knocked Santorum for dropping the ball on the delegate game in 2012.

He knows the rules. He's just a demagogue fomenting unrest. Whatever you think of the rules, the general structure has been in place for over a century. So it shouldn't be changed for a whiny billionaire. He's not that special. History didn't begin with him. You don't change the rules in the middle of the game.

He's just demagoguing (sp? ) this issue, and people should ignore him.

The prayer provoked Muslims nearby to gather around the Jewish visitors and begin chanting Allahu akbar and with our blood we will redeem Al-Aqsa. The Jewish Temple Mount activists claim that they were assaulted by Waqf officials and the Muslim worshippers. While police said that they were not aware of any violent behaviour and that the exchanges were purely verbal, video footage from the incident proved that physical altercations did indeed occur.

Only we don't have the same system. We've added primaries, and primary elections, in the USA, add to the legitimacy of the selection process. If they did not add to that perception of legitimacy there would be no need to have them.

To have voters in both parties fed up with the leadership, and then to have the leadership turn around and suggest that the primaries mean nothing - well, why not just run up to a bear and kick him in the balls? Seems to have about the same amount of sense behind it.

The result was months of harassment and death threats, as well as some limited but welcome changes to how Twitter responds to negative content.

Political contributions are limited to people who actually live in the candidate's district. For the President that is the whole country.

The first election is held in February. The bottom 50% of the candidates are eliminated in that election. The next election is held in May. Again the bottom 50% are eliminated. The next election is held in August except all but the top two are eliminated. They run for election in November.

And the electoral college is eliminated.

So if no one receives a majority on the first ballot, the delegates are free to use their judgment to decide who would be the best choice, weighing both the interests of their voters and the interests of the party as a whole.

They don't have to. Read up on the national popular vote project. Basically states can allocate EVs any way they want. So many states have passed legislation saying they will allocate their votes to the winner of the national popular vote. To be honest, the system is not running well outside its design tolerances. One and possibly both major parties are unresponsive to large parts of their theoretical bases, to the point that not only do the majority of eligible voters not bother, the ones that do are increasingly forced to choose between options that do not represent their interests.

The system, on any level, was not intended to function in this manner. No wonder parts are flying off at every turn. Every mechanism for correction has been defeated and obstructed. All the safeguards have been by-passed. The engine's about ready to blow and it's not going to be pretty when it happens.

492 Here is the thing about the delegate argument. Remember the whole outsider/non-establishment thing? That there are a lot of voters who want a non-establishment candidate?

The system is the establishment. It was established by the establishment. To say to people, well, you just don't understand, totally misses the mark of what is going on.

People do understand, and they don't think it should be that way. The whole thing, of Iowa going first, NH second, SC third.

That process made John McCain. It made Bob Dole. It made Romney.

So if people look at it now and go, hey, you are telling me I don't understand it, but the truth is, I get it, I just don't like it.

Why can't we rotate the order? Why aren't we doing winner take all in every state (that's how the national vote is)? Or why aren't we doing proportional in every state? Why aren't we even voting in every state? How come some are caucuses and some are conventions and some are whatever?

The GOP as constructed makes loser candidate. I loved W, really, but he just barely won. Both times.

So, yeah, keep going with the "you aren't smart enough or you don't care to know about the representative delegate system" blah blah blah.

How about you propose a way to get a Republican elected to the Presidency rather than defend the arcaneness of a losing system?

This is where Cruz has lost his mojo.

Yeah, I think the hype/love from women is that she is exceedingly well groomed; she is a fairly plain woman who has reached her full potential by working out most of the day, having her hair done perfectly (she has a stylist who travels with her), a wardrobe selected to maximize her strengths, etc. In other words, a sort-of attainable beauty vs. someone who is just naturally beautiful no matter what they're wearing, how much/little make-up, etc.

Think Anniston vs. Monica Bellucia or Aishwarya Rai.

Yeah exactly. If one or two states change their mind, the system reverts back to the old way. Then 2 other states can come on board, and national vote comes back. That's every mid-size to large city today and the general risk aversion of legal departments. They know that a jury's going to go with the sympathetic story and buy into the ten year old pictures of the deceased, completely ignore the icky coroner's report which has facts such as this was a 195-pound male brandishing a weapon, and give the family a big "we're sorry" payout.

I get the rationale for settling, you're better off paying and putting it to rest instead of paying and taking a ton of PR flak, and who knows, an insurer could have even forced that hand, but it is a shame. I've read a little on this, but do not know all the details. Has it been implemented? This was adopted because of the 2000 election and is based upon current assumptions regarding how states vote. In the long run, this type of plan does not seem stable as states flip, etc. It could obviously change the result for one election, but in the long run, it just seems unsustainable.

504 Re: Tim Robbins - Particularly funny how, in his tweet, he asks if 2+2=5. He'd better hope so if Bernie wins.

Any time a Bernie supporter wants to argue anything about numbers my mind is just blown. If Barry, a closet global collectivist, can't keep the car in the CBO's very generously drawn lanes, you really think Bernie's crazy entitlement giveaway is going to add up for more than about 2 months?

505 My thought that Rubio would be leading had Trump not entered. Bush with that last name wasn't going anywhere

Ditto. Once both Jeb and Rubio were out I was able to at lest walk away with some grim satisfaction in the fact.

They'll probably still try to foist Rube at the convention, but that's a separate issue.

Even funnier if you believe the rumors that they broke up because he started shifting SLIGHTLY to the right of Lenin politically, and she blew a gasket.

508 To be honest, the problem is not the system, it's the people running it. Doesn't matter what system you have if the people in it suck.

which means people in each state need to pay attention to who they vote in

I'll admit, I used to just tick off the "Party" ticket. No more.

509 It's getting out there, whether anyone wants to admit it or not.

---------

No doubt. It may be whining, but is a very effective strategy for Trump - just as winning those delegates was an effective strategy for Cruz. I don't fault Trump for bringing it up - I just think he is wrong.

513 Well this just might call into question the judgement of that Royal Norwegian Air Force pilot praising the F-35 and/or the sad state of training, a Norwegian F-16 during a practice mission accidentally shot up a lookout tower. Luckily no one was injured on the ground.
