Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | Vox: The Reason People Are So Cruel On the Internet Is Altruistic PunishmentBefore getting to that, let's mention today's victim of the Internet Outrage Mob: Curt Schilling, who was just fired from his job at ESPN (time to boycott ESPN, no?). He was fired because he shared on FaceBook-- months ago -- a meme goofing on men who want to use women's restrooms:The post showed an overweight man wearing a wig and women’s clothing with parts of the T-shirt cut out to expose his breasts. It says: "LET HIM IN! to the restroom with your daughter or else you're a narrow-minded, judgmental, unloving racist bigot who needs to die." To that, Schilling added: "A man is a man no matter what they call themselves. I don’t care what they are, who they sleep with, men’s room was designed for the penis, women’s not so much. Now you need laws telling us differently? Pathetic." "ESPN is an inclusive company," ESPN said in a statement. "Curt Schilling has been advised that his conduct was unacceptable and his employment with ESPN has been terminated."ESPN is a company that sells men on the idea that watching hours of other men doing athletic things is itself manly. ESPN should really stop daring men to exit their economic sphere entirely, before they begin figuring out that it's women who should enjoy watching dudes exert themselves. Seriously, ESPN has always been kinda extremely homoerotic, and it's making this more obvious every day. They should just start advertising tampons on there. Why anyone watches this anymore, I have no idea. It's like Bravo but without practical advice about redoing your kitchen. It's a pageant with occasional whistles and instant replays. Schilling discusses his Tolerance Sacking here. Now, on to Vox, and third-party punishment. I've been talking about this for about two years now, I think -- we did a podcast on the subject with John Sexton (another convert to the cause after I recommended Trial by Fury to him). Vox now Voxspalains altruistic punishment, which they call "third party punishment." The two terms describe the same phenomenon, which is that people take pleasure in punishing people for wronging others. That's the third-party part, or the "altruistic" part -- apes punish other apes for wronging themselves, but apes don't care if you harm another ape. Humans -- possibly uniquely -- do. This is an altruistic impulse and it underlies our sense of fairness in society generally. But there is a dark side to it. Because humans are hard-wired to really, really enjoy punishing others for their alleged sins against other people -- we derive actual pleasure from it; it's that feeling of angry righteous fury political partisans feel -- and sometimes we go deliberately looking for slights to others, which could be entirely imaginary, to righteously punish. One point the Vox article makes which I haven't made myself is that people are willing to use more vicious punishments when defending the alleged wrongs inflicted on others than they are to avenge wrongs perpetrated on themselves. This may be because people are naturally more tough than they credit others with being. And so if you say "You're an asshole" to someone, he just shrugs it off -- who cares? But if you say "You're an asshole" to one of his designated victim cohorts he is honor-bound to defend and avenge, he assumes a bunch of things about his victim cohort -- that they're weak; that they're excessively sensitive and can be wounded by trivial things; and that they are utterly incapable of standing up for themselves -- and permits himself to engage in cruelty he would never consider indulging in on his own behalf to avenge the wronged third party. This could be why furious liberals are so furious and nasty about the Washington Redskins team name, but if you ask the actual Indians about it, they shrug and say "What's the big deal? Isn't it a compliment?" and actually name their own high school teams the "Redskins" and other Indian-themed names. But when you're coming in to defend these Indians -- well, you assume a level of offense on their behalf that really doesn't exist, then you assume they're weak and need a White Knight (usually an actual caucasian White Knight, actually) and you get nastier defending the Poor Indians than you'd ever be defending anyone apart from your own children. And that's why the internet is so terrible. This isn't an impulse to be completely suppressed -- as I said, it is this sense of what is "fair" to others that informs the most rudimentary sense of morality and ethics people feel. (Feel, not think.) Third-party or altruistic punishment is the neurobiological impulse at the root of morality itself. But it should be restrained. And people need to think deeply: Are these poor souls are being so cruel in defending really so weak that they cannot defend themselves? Are they really this sensitive that they are wounded and scarred by the most trivial verbal gaffe? Is the imagined cruelty one seeks to avenge actually greater than the deliberate and calculated cruelty the avenger seeks to visit upon the supposed original wrongdoer? Is the cruelty one is about to deliberately add to the world really likely to make the world a less cruel place? Or just a crueler one? And one needs to ask -- am I really doing this to save my poor victim cohort, or am I just doing it because cruelty feels good and this is the only socially-permissible outlet for behaving cruelly? It's this cycle -- imagining a minor slight to be a major one, then escalating this minor alleged cruelty into a major bout of intentional, coordinated group cruelty (group shaming, viral punishment, etc.) -- that is turning the internet, and the society that it shapes, into a never-ending Vicious Circle. It's time to start letting some things go, and start letting the alleged third-party victims maybe do some complaining and self-defending first before the world jumps in to make every minor squabble a major cultural battle. Speaking of Target.
It seems to me that an obvious protest to drive home how stupid this is would be for guys to just start walking into the women's restroom and hanging out. Since the official policy is that anyone can use any bathroom, nothing they could do about it, right? You don't have to do anything weird or creepy. Just walk in and wash your hands or something. What the internet also does is give us a greater range, both to see the 'crimes' and to exact our vengeance. Our offense button is pushed so much more often when something that happens 2,000 miles away is paraded before us.
I remember driving to work (near Philly) and hearing on the radio about a bus crash in Tennessee that killed some school kids. I was just thinking, why are you sharing this bad news with me? I has no effect on my life, except now that I am aware of it, i'm less happy. Too much range. A plane crashes anywhere on the PLANET and we know about it. I see a slightly different situation forming from this gender-neutral thing.
At any significant event, a trip to the restroom is met by a certain degree of asymmetry. On one side, you have a door with dudes walking in and out. On the other, you have a door with a long line of women tailing back into the hallway, out the front entrance, and halfway to the parking lot. Perhaps the most apparent effect of gender-neutral restrooms may well be to embolden those women of stout constitution to make use of the men's room under such circumstances. And one, or two, will bring ten more, and soon... guys, we're gonna be standing in line. Posted by: JEM at April 21, 2016 08:04 PM (o+SC1) 201

The search for THE BLACK QUARTERBACK who will forever change the face of the game was bad enough... but when OMG, RG III, was drafted and before he played in the NFL, the build up to it was more than I could take. The "reporters" must have been offered a five hundred buck bonus for every time they mentioned THE ARRIVAL OF RG III and how the whole world would change for the better. Shilling is an idiot. He was an amazing baseball player. He seemed not to realize how utterly replaceable he was as an analyst.
He practically bankrupted the state of Rhode Island with a corporate welfare scheme, ($75 million goes poof so a former jock could pretend he was a video game developer) yet the right loves him because he tweets about Noah's Ark being something other than a fairy tale. Fuck him. ESPN doesn't need the headache. There are lots of great ex-players who can talk about baseball. Thousands of them. There was nothing Curt Shilling, analyst, brought to the table that any number of former big leaguers couldn't bring. His being a nut job made it an easy decision for ESPN. I stopped shopping at Target when they kicked out the Salvation Army bell ringers at Christmas. I went into the store, loaded up a cart with merchandise till I could barely see over it, then went to Customer Service and asked to see the manager. When she came out, I pointed at the cart and told her that I had intended to purchase all those items as Christmas presents, but sadly would no longer be able to do so because I was going to give that money to the Salvation Army instead. Then I left the cart there and walked away. Posted by: grammie winger, watching the fig tree at April 21, 2016 09:00 PM (dFi94) I love you. In a heterosexual, sisterly way. Many years ago, back in the 80s somewhere along there, we took my paternal grandmother, who was in a nursing home to a family "shindig" thingy they always wanted to have every year or so. We did at this picnic/park area type of thing at the Furman U campus. Several in the family went there. Now, I was my grandmother's favorite, her youngest grandchild who was older than many of her great-grandchildren. I was her little baby, and apparently I learned later, that drove some of the others up the wall. She'd apparently brag on every little I'd do when I was a baby and toddler. So we were up there and she was sitting next to me as she was always going to do. We were all getting up and getting ready to go home, you know the process of leaving at something like that where you do it slowly. After a little while I heard my grandmother say, "I've got to go the bathroom." I said something about we'd find her place. Then I heard say again, "I've got to go!". Then, "I've to go NOW!". I turned and looked, and well, it was a sight. Right there in the open at Furman with other people near by, she just hiked up her dress, and well I won't go any further in the description. I said "My God!". An aunt, her oldest, was the first to turn and look. "Mama!" she shouted. Then the rest of them turned and one of my uncles said "God damn!" out loud. His wife gave him a look at cussing that strongly. We all just quickly formed a circle around her. Well, what are ya'll getting so upset about, she wanted to know -- I had to go! a commenter after the TMZ released the Prince died of a drug overdose
As a registered nurse, it makes total sense. He died of an accidental drug overdose. Actually, I'm changing my cause of death to accidental drug overdose. There was a mid-air emergency and they had to land the plane and rush Prince to the hospital where here received naloxone and was released. Naloxone is the reversal agent we use to reverse opiate and heroin overdose. But it blocks the drug's effect for up to a few days and the patient is thrown into immediate withdrawal. Sings of opiate withdrawal are essentially really bad flu-like symptoms. The only thing that stops the withdrawal symptoms is a big old dose of the opiates. He likely took too much and stopped breathing and died. He may have been dead hours before anyone found him and rigor mortis had set in. He was probably stiff and purple when the ambulance found him and pronounced him dead at his house instead of transporting him to the hospital. sad Posted by: artisanal 'ette at April 21, 2016 09:06 PM (qCMvj) 420

Years ago, there was a terrible story from somewhere in the Midwest. A family was at a t-ball game, and little boy needed to pee. Dad (stepdad?) took him to the men's room in the park and let the boy go inside by himself.
Some older guy came sauntering out a few minutes later, and when little boy didn't come out, dad went in and found the boy with his throat slashed. That always stayed with me. I NEVER allowed my son to go in a men's room when he was traveling with me. I didn't give a damn about the looks from the women in the ladies room at my seven year old son. He didn't want to be there either, but I was not about to let him out of my sight when we were on the road. Posted by: Jane D'oh at April 21, 2016 09:11 PM (FsuaD) 434

"altruistic punishment: is a euphemism.
Liberals enjoy the pleasure of hatred, period. So they rationalize it into being a noble sentiment, something that is caused either by a) being wronged by, for example, fake poop swastikas b) being outraged on behalf of others who are being targeted by FAG on cakes, that the victim drew themselves a) are minority activists, b) masochistic whites compensating for the humiliation they feel being masochists 90% of the time. There's no need to invent fancy obfuscatory pseudoscientific bullshit terminology like "altruistic punishment". Liberals are so narcissistic they are incapale of honest self evaluation. They imagine a mote in the conservative eye which doesn't exist. And they cannot see the beam in their own eye. At this point I would not concede their correctness on any issue. They are 100% full of shit. Posted by: angela urkel at April 21, 2016 09:30 PM (bYrA0) Posted by: Bossy Conservative....tortured American at April 21, 2016 09:30 PM (+1T7c) 501

Anyone remember Justine Sacco? She was one of the first really egregious sacrifices on the altar of political correctness during this Social Justice French Revolution we're living through now.
She was taking a trip to Africa for work, and she tweeted something like, "On my way to Africa now. I hope I don't get AIDS. Just kidding! I'm white." She was fired before her plane landed. The thing that really irked me about that is, she was making fun of herself! She was basically saying, "Look at me! I'm a pretty and sheltered white girl. Nothing bad could ever happen to me, tee-hee!" She was fired for making a self-deprecating joke! I'm also really pissed about Curt Schilling being fired, as well as Brendan Eich of Mozilla from a few years back, because these guys were both guilty only of expressing totally normal and mainstream political opinions. Express the wrong sort of political opinion (even if that opinion was totally okay yesterday), or even make yourself the butt of the wrong kind of joke, and you're no longer allowed to enjoy any sort of gainful employment. That's the world we're living in now. That's the America we're living in now. I want my Reagan era back. Posted by: Prothonotary Warbler... She told me last year he prescribes 80 vicodans/month to "ease" her pain. I was gobsmacked. Yet, I fell about the same time and tore my kneecap. Was hobbling on crutches in extreme pain, taking Tylenol, and my doc just told me he wouldn't rule out surgery, to keep taking the Tylenol, which wasn't helping. He doesn't believe in pain meds at all. Which is fine for a small percentage of the population, which I'm not. I soldiered through for months, and never went back to him. Still have bad pain. I was walking down the hall earlier today, minding my own biz, heading to a very important time-waster if I recall, when one of those obnoxiously large pachyderms got it's ass in my very important way. It was reading some kind of report, something about new bathroom rules I believe, and it couldn't be bothered to get it's big dumb sauntering ass out of the way. It's body is in the 3rd floor supply closet. That's the one where the key has been broken off in the lock for the last 2 years. There are other justifiable homicides in there too.

Funny you guys are talking pain meds...
I've been suffering from sciatica the last couple days. Yesterday the pain became much worse in my left leg than my back, although earlier today my back decided to act up again more as well. Sigh. Was all set to see the doctor tomorrow. I might still do so, but... Was doing some sciatica info searching on the web yesterday, and found a recommendation for St. John's Wort Oil. So I ordered some to come overnight from Amazon. OMG. The stuff not only works, it worked like a miracle cure. I put it on my left leg and back, and 20 minutes later could walk and function again. I put it on about 4 hours ago, it's still working. If I have another herniated disk I want to see the doctor about it, but again, OMG this stuff works. Thank you God!! Jackson's election marked a new direction in American politics. He was the first westerner elected president, indeed, the first president from a state other than Virginia or Massachusetts. He boldly proclaimed himself to be the "champion of the common man" and believed that their interests were ignored by the aggressive national economic plans of Clay and Adams. More than this, however, when Martin Van Buren followed Jackson as president, it indicated that the Jacksonian movement had long-term significance that would outlast his own charismatic leadership. Andrew Jackson is known to have harbored animosity for Native Americans. During his administration, many tribes were moved to reservations in the Oklahoma Territory. Van Buren, perhaps even more than Jackson, helped to create the new Democratic party that centered upon three chief qualities closely linked to Jacksonian Democracy. First, it declared itself to be the party of ordinary farmers and workers. Second, it opposed the special privileges of economic elites. Third, to offer affordable western land to ordinary white Americans, Indians needed to be forced further westward. Posted by: Satan of Walpurgis VT at April 21, 2016 10:08 PM (ctqZB) 672

Andrew Jackson was making a foreign policy decision, there. This foreign nation happened to be within the borders of the US. But, yeah, the Supreme Court does not get to dictate our foreign policy to the President. It's separation of powers. Congress could have stopped it, by any of various means at their disposal, but chose not to. It's sort of like when GWB signed McCain-Feingold into law, while complaining that he felt it was unconstitutional and he hoped the Supreme Court would take care of it. He was the starting point guard on his high school basketball team - which was pretty impressive given the fact that he was only 5' 2". He sought out other short performers for his movies, band and videos. All those female performers you see with him were 5' tall or less. He did all the choreography in his performances, and designed the costumes for the performers. Those Sheila E. video dance steps for example were his choreography. If you watch the Appolonia 6 video "Sex Shooter" for example - every move the performers do was his work. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vskr1-D_WOk Very very talented person. Jeebus, just read the snippet about the newest Taliban/ISIS campaign - er, the changes to all the bills - over at WeaselZip. The Bamiyan Buddhas are gone, ditto the Assyrian churches, so ya know rampaging history-destroying Nazis get restless.
Especially chilling/nauseating - well, it would be a few years ago, now it's just "normal" - is the WaPo's throwaway (and illogical, idiotic) conversion of King's only legitimate and even serious cause - equality before the law - into racist statist economic authoritarianism. Oh, and the US Capitol is removing state flags with the Confederate flag in them in a place they previously were displayed. It's almost as if the the degradation of the country into racism, lawlessness, authoritarianism, and corruption (making it more like the rest of the world, and squandering its greatest accomplishments) just wouldn't be complete without the vile and creepy exercise of expunging history, a la the Nazi, Soviet, and other insane totalitarian viruses of recent history. I think the Next Big Thing will be "euthanasia," i.e., state-licensed killing, including infanticide. The Obamacare controversies and "death panel" talk put that on the back burner, but it will come back with force. One thing on DiBlasio's agenda was to force all medical students in NYC to perform abortions to get an MD. He didn't pursue it ---too extreme even for NY right now --- but it shows where they want to go. The 21st century requires a purge of the medical profession. And there's still a lot of damage to do in the schools and military, a lot of further ostracism of undesirables (orthodox Christians and Jews) from polite society, etc. Oh, I note that Thomas Jefferson is being called a "rapist" by academic feminazis. But lawfare wouldn't accomplish much without that other key ingredient - a lawless judiciary, devolved into part-unaccountable legislature, part-CPSU Politburo. And yes the WF CEO published a devastating op-ed in the WSJ about the idiocy that is O-care before it happened. The former Vons CEO did an equally devastating op-ed on the same general topic earlier in the WSJ, though you had to be somewhat sentient and economically literate to get the implications (meaning the impact was quite small across the country). So Michelle Obama is going to appear in an episode of NCIS.
Scratch that from my viewing list. (Okay, it hasn't been on the list for a few years, but now I can pretend I'm boycotting it.) Posted by: RWC - Team BOHICA It's all good. I was resonding to RK's comment about a man's hair touching his ears. Which mine is currently doing. All in good fun. I'm new to commenting on a regular basis here, so things can get awkward even though we are all just hanging out. I might need to throw in some /s now and then. I used to have long hair. Gorgeous, shoulder-length, wavy copper-red hair.
But it started thinning out on top, so I cut it all off. As Bobcat Goldthwait used to say, "It's hard to look cool with long hair when you're bald. You end up looking like Ben Franklin." Well, anyway, back when I had that long hair, I used to wear an old Marine Corps jacket from WWII that I'd bought at Flossie McGrew's, a combination thrift/costume store. But then, when I started cutting my hair down to the scalp, people would see me wearing that jacket and mistake me for an actual Marine. As much as I loved that jacket, I had to stop wearing it after that. I didn't like having people accord me that sort of respect when I hadn't earned it. I still have the jacket. If we have a retired Marine around here, I'd be happy to give it to him. It seems a shame to let such a nice coat go to waste in my closet. Posted by: Prothonotary Warbler... Shorter Ace: People need to really think harder about third-party punishment. Unless it's me boycotting ESPN for firing Curt Schilling.

Re: The sidebar about the "Palestinians" rejecting a Jewish state. There was a Palestinian state, established at the same time and under the same auspices as Israel. It lasted just long enough for Jordan and Egypt to invade it on their way to complete the obliteration of the Jews via the destruction of Israel.

Interesting thing about Schilling is that early in his career nobody thought much of him. He was a throw-away addition in the Glenn Davis for Pete Harnisch/Steve Finley/Curt Schilling trade between the Houston Astros and Baltimore Orioles. When he was in the Orioles farm system (I think they got him from the Phillies?) he was not as highly regarded as John Habyan or Pete Harnisch, who ultimately had a brain freeze when he played for the Mets and had to retire with control problems. So now you know. Btw, the Glenn Davis was perhaps the worst DC area trade of all time, right up there with the Gerald Riggs trade to Atlanta for a first and a second.

Oh yeah, he was traded to Orioles from the Red Sox in the Mike Boddicker for Brady Anderson/Curt Schilling trade. Brady Anderson was the big name in that trade, so the Red Sox obviously didn't think much of Schilling either.

One correction:
"But if you say "You're an asshole" to one of his designated victim cohorts he is honor-bound to defend and avenge..." As has been pointed out on this blog, society (particularly of the SJWs) has shifted to one of victimhood. The "he" in this case is likely seeking to bolster his own power through identifying with the victim. Also likely, as the power they seek relies on an authoritarian regime to dole it out, they are attempting to squarely place themselves on the side of authority. They care not what rights are trampled, so long as they (naively) feel they are doing the trampling. Posted by: Georgie at April 22, 2016 03:38 PM (Lf1SB) Processing 0.14, elapsed 0.1417 seconds. |
