Recently Captured Terror Figure Salam Abdeslam Linked to Today's Bombings in Brussels

He was captured Friday. On Monday, the bombs go off.

His fingerprints were found in the Belgium apartment near some detonators -- which authorities think were intended to be used in today's terror bombing, had they not been captured.

This directly raises the ticking bomb question, with no wiggle room:

Would it have been immoral to twist this guy's arms until he gives up his compatriots?

For those claiming that's immoral -- there are thirty formerly living human beings, and two hundred wounded ones, who might want to disagree with you.

Evil is not just what you do by your actions; it's also what you do by your inaction.

Comments: I accidentally left comments open and I guess I will leave them open, provisionally.

However, I do not feel like moderating the immoderate all day long again.

If you have some screaming you wish to do, some perceived insult you need to avenge, on account of someone not fancying the same political candidate that's caught your eye, please make your arrangements to find a blog that will provide you more of a #SafeSpace.

30 Yeah I still don't think descending into a Jacobin police state of gray-area torture is the way forward even now.

Stop muslim immigration. Enforce the law equally on all citizens. Institute sanctions on those neighborhoods and mosques that won't integrate. I actually don't hate the German idea of paying them to leave, provided they aren't replaced immediately by new refugees.

We're spending like drunken sailor-thieves anyway, we might as well do it on things which will lead to economic prosperity and the social good, the actual, demonstrable social good.

Not being blown into ribbons at the airport check-in counter is a social good.

Let's try taking some moderate action before going straight to internment and forcible deportation.

Which is not to take those off the table.

For killing, these "inspire magazine" bombs are the cheap and effective way to go. The only way to stop such attacks is by monitoring source communities. Like Cruz said.

98 Being an experienced radiation worker (30+ years) I can tell you that the so-called "dirty bomb" is not much of a bigger deal than a normal bomb. The biggest danger to people is the blast itself. The spread of contamination can be cleaned up in a few days depending on much explosives they use. All the BS you hear about the dirty bombs is a lot of hype.

What "justifies" torture is the calculus of the greatest good for the greatest number. Break one egg, just one, just this once, to make a delicious omelet.

But being justified isn't the same thing as being morally right. Torture is always outside morality. It's also true that sometimes it works and innocent lives are thereby protected.

Rule of thumb: when you die, beg for God's mercy.

Chain migration. Immigration allows relatives of American citizens to bypass quotas and get into the US and get citizenship.

Which means that once you let one person in, you let in his entire extended family.

Some of whom may just be here to soak benefits.

because the left has convinced everyone that immigration control is "racist" and much of the socially liberal middle upper class that controls the GOP has bought into this, or is so afraid of the "racist" charge they will not speak up against this stupid claim.

Therefore, the only way people feel safe discussing enforcing immigration is if they simultaneously promise to greatly expand legal immigration -- that is, immigration enforcement is an evil which can only be justified if there is some greater good (of higher legal immigration) to balance that evil out.

Homicide is always a crime. The penalties are (legally) waived if it's justified (or sometimes excusable, which is a different standard).

I dislike the concept of torture immensely, so I'm not *happy* about it, and circumstances that justify it are rare... but far from impossible.

I think it was Bruce Willis as a general in The Siege who *begged* the politicians not to send him to impose martial law (or the equivalent). What kind of pissed me off is that the film still portrayed him as a villain or near-villain in the end, even though he laid out in detail what he was being asked for and said "don't do this."

++++

It is morally justified to treat your enemies as they treat you. The reason the great powers got together behind the Geneva Convention was to protect their own soldiers. If England and France agree that they will each treat prisoners of war under an agreed upon set of rules, it because each does not want their own soldiers to be tortured, starved, and otherwise mistreated.

But, it will not work if just one side unilaterally decides that for moral reasons they will abide by certain moral standards. That will not constrain the enemy. So, to get fair treatment for your own people, you dish out the same as what you are getting. Then the other side will have a motive to come to an agreement.

184 ACE - I have a recommend for you on Netflix - The Returned/Les Revenants (French Version).

It's in French with subtitles. There's a US version on Netflix or Amazon also but the French version is better (even with the subtitles). 16 episodes about an hour long, not the movie which the French version is based off of.

The US version is shorter because - advertising. They left out some important stuff so it's the abridged version.

ehhhh... seems a little strained as a theory. why do terrorists need a go-code to terrorize? it's what they were planning anyway.

and the terrorists know the Belgians picked up Abdeslam. Why do they need a signal from him to attack Belgium? Their minds were probably running that way anyway.

Also, I don't know how critical Abdeslam is. In the early days people called him a "mastermind" but I think he might have been more like a logistics guy or a planner. he seems to have chickened out from blowing himself up in the November 13 attacks. (I think he was at the stadium, but didn't blow up his belt.)

We had those but now that I'm on these high blood pills I think that much potassium might kill me via hyperkalemia.

Posted by: @votermom at March 22, 2016 03:15 PM (cbfNE)

Potassium Iodide pills are designed for nuclear accidents involving the release of core materials. They may or may not do any good at all for the so-called dirty bomb. It depends on what the scum used for a radioactive material. They are designed to saturate the thyroid with clean Iodine so that entry of radioactive I-131 will not lodge in the thyroid and will be passed from the body. The other major problem is that you have to take them BEFORE exposure to the radioactive Iodine. So if someone blows up a bomb that releases I-131 in your area if you don't have the pills on you they are useless.

That's what is so menacing about this. Every time we kill "essential" personnel, it does nothing to stem the attacks. Because the ideology is still the root cause, and most of these attacks, as noted, aren't exactly imaginative. They're simplistic, because why fix what ain't broken. 297 Hello. I was reading the thread when the comments were shut down. I saw that Backwards Boy got banned. May I humbly ask you to consider reversing that decision? Backwards Boy has never been anything other than kind and funny and informative to me, and usually very gracious. I understand that in the heat of an argument that things are said that can be over the top. Many relationships are broken for that very same reason. Friendships that take years to develop are tossed aside because of a words said in anger or bitterness, in the heat of the moment.

When someone is banned, there is no recourse for their friends. There is no way to get in touch with them or follow up with them. It's like they have never been.

I understand there have to be rules. If I were to put it in Christian terms, I would say there is Righteousness. And then there is Mercy.

Respectfully,

Ask the Nazis of WWII. They wiped out entire cells of French Resistence fighters by torturing one or two of the captured fighters (or family members).
You see, you don't start torturing without knowing a little info in advance.
At times you ask them questions you have confirmed the answer to in advance. That way if they lie, you know. Then you can act accordingly.

333 Problem with torture is that once you sanction it, it does tend to get out of hand. A bit like the death penalty (not something I have a particular objection to) but worse: it gets applied to lesser and lesser situations until its use is normalised. And then yes, torture stops giving good answers because it isn't applied to the right people, and you start getting a lot of noise. That was one of the pragmatic reasons the Israelis basically nixed it.

So yeah, of course it can sometimes (and has given) give you good results. If security agencies were perfect, there would be no problem using it, but they aren't, so it ends up yielding crap in the intermediate to long run.

Of course it does. And I'd say most of the info you get is probably accurate. The question is, how do you verify the info, and can you do it in time for the intel to actually be useful? The reason you resist torture/interrogation as long as you can stand it isn't to deny your enemy the intel, but to give your own side time to make changes so the intel loses it's value.

372 This directly raises the ticking bomb question, with no wiggle room:

Would it have been immoral to twist this guy's arms until he gives up his compatriots?

Humans have only been not torturing each other for a very limited time span. Most people who lived prior to now quite literally would not understand those words in that order.

I have no problem with using "enhanced interrogation" on this guy. Though I freely admit that I have no bright line test on this but the closest I can come is that if you are the main suspect in a prior terror bombing and we catch you, well, I'm not going to shed any tears for what is done trying to get you to talk to prevent another one.

When you remove yourself from the strictures of society, you remove yourself from the protections of society. This is not randomly waterboarding or whatever random people. This is someone who by his own actions (to a high degree of probability) decided fuck civilization. Fine. You want to live by primitive rules, we will do the same to you.

It's back to reciprocity. You don't get the protections of civilization when you reject the bounds thereof. You reject one, you reject both.

397 334 Problem with torture is that once you sanction it, it does tend to get out of hand.

Posted by: HiHo at March 22, 2016 03:41 PM (CPk0

++++

I'm not eager to see us actually torturing people. But, much of what we do and have done that gets described as torture really isn't. Waterboarding, stress positions, denial of sleep. etc. These are all serious interrogation techniques that should be used sparingly. I hope I am never in a position where they would get applied to me.

But, those are just not the same as pulling peoples' fingernails out, getting worked over with a blowtorch, etc. Those are things that are real torture and as far as I know, we haven't done anything like that in a very long time.

Regarding the Israelis, can you give more info about when and what they nixed?

When will we in the West decide that the lives of our children are more important than a Muslim's bruised over-inflated ego? No.

And in which universe will a society that's still all-in on "Islam is Peace" and not restricting "refugee" flows from Syria suddenly going to be A-OK with torture and the semi-inevitable torturing of an innocent party?

Torture, however you define it, is just one tool and interogator can use. But tot get accurate information you have to kinda know who you are interrogating, what specific information you are seeking, a road map of where you might be headed. If you go into any interrogation blind, your generally not going to get anywhere no matter what method you use. Random information your captive may give that he or she thinks is useless might be crucial to you in connecting the dots.

502 So would this be a good time to point out that the vice article linked earlier explicitly states that everyone closely associated with Epstein was able to weasel out of their subpoena except Trump, and Trump responded to the subpoena immediately and his response to the legal representative of the women who accused Epstein of abusing them as teenage girls was as the following?

Edwards, the lawyer for Roberts and about 10 other Jane Does, said that after he served Trump with the subpoena in 2009, Trump immediately contacted him.

"During the conversation, Mr. Trump was open and forthright," Edwards said. "I cannot discuss the substance of the conversation. But I will say that it was obvious to me that he was in no way involved in any untoward activity."

It appears that Trump cut ties to Epstein a few weeks after the non-prosecution agreement was reached. On October 15, 2007, the New York Post reported that Mar-A-Lago had barred Epstein because he hit on a masseuse at the club. Epstein denied to the the Post that he had been banned. One of the Jane Doe attorneys told VICE News a slightly different account, saying that he had been told Trump broke ties with Epstein after Epstein tried to pick up the underage daughter of a Mar-A-Lago club member.

So many of us have that same fear, Moki! I fully expected him to announce it during his visit. It would be his way, always with a special FU to America.

Although, his comments today about America, like Cuba, being founded by slaves and slave owner, were particularly (and intentionally) galling. I have relatives who were here back in the late 17th century (colonial MA), and they sure as h*ll never owned slaves.

522 Most of the West still holds that the individuals that do such things should be punished as individuals. That is the law enforcement framework and to some extent the limited war framework where you try to separate the sheep and the goats.

The older conception, still held by much of the world, is that of tribal justice, "you kill one of ours, we kill members of your tribe until bloodlust is sated". Depending on the bloodthirstiness of the tribe, it may even cause mass bloodletting because of an imputed slight by others. To such societies, if you are not a member of the tribe, then one's value is negligible if your existence does not serve some function to their tribe. Believers in the universalist doctrines of the Declaration of Independence, they are not. Terrorists view the West as a whole to be punished even if some of the collateral damage may be to adherents of their own faith.

This is also the doctrine of total war--it did not matter whether a citizen was a pacifist in Dresden or not. They were tribe German versus tribe Allies and thus all were fair game. To combat the werewolf escapades right before and after the war, towns were collectively punished if attacks on Allied soldiers came from there.

When and if things get bad enough, we may see the West peel off its self imposed restraint and go tribal or perhaps some of those societies with a tribal outlook may decide to let loose a couple of nukes and bring down something that makes WWII look tame as WWII plus a lotta nuclear explosions. Of such things, nightmares are made.

543 Easy way for Ace to mend fences with many of us who think that, while Cruz is 100 times better than Trump, Trump is 100 x better than Imelda Clinton, and that anyone who says NeverTrump is flat out freaking insane: just acknowledge how prescient Trump was on Molenbeek.

Ace just criticized Trump for moderating the suspend-Muslim-immigration stance that Ace criticized before as badly in need of moderating, but now Trump is supposedly guilty of inconsistency and no principles. Also, Trump thought it was fine that Epstein liked women "on the younger side" years before anyone knew that Epsrein was kidnapping and raping under-age girls. Trump is Trump, and so approving of male-female age differential relationships now must be seen as approval for pedophilia.

Love you Ace, but you have Trump Derangement Syndrome. Trump could well turn out to be as good as Cruz on several of the most important issues: naming and fighting the Islamic threat, stopping illegal immigration and getting security-minded about who we let in legally, saving Christians in the Islamic world from the Christian genocide that is now roaring on full burn, restoring military strength and securing national gun rights.

Of course Trump lacks Cruz's principled understanding, but he is at least on the right side of a bunch of key issues that 95% of politicians are wrong about. For a fallback candidate that's pretty darned good. So I,'m sorry but I just don't get the hate. In fact it really does seem to be a kind of insanity.

There are REAL threats out there on the electoral horizon--Hillary and Sanders--compared to whom Trump is cavalry to the rescue, yet some are pealing, "nooooo, I'd rather be scalped!" Come back in from the burning cold Ace. We are your friends.

550 I always thought that it would take the deaths of a Billionaire's sons or daughters to motivate a non-governmental response to Islam. They would fund a "whatever it takes" approach up to and including nuking Mecca or otherwise discrediting the entire cult.

An idea I mused on was to create fake ancient writings of Islam that rewrite the Koran into something more like the New Testament - love thy neighbor and such - but it's probably too impractical.

In the end, this will not end well for followers of Islam - an overreaction is bound to happen one way or another. I myself am in the "get it over with" camp - do something big (genocide big) before the Islamists figure out how to engineer a virus that wipes us all out.

Read in comments (somewhere) today that Belgium was on a "Red Alert" and this still happened. Also, have seen one photo of the bombing taken from a distance. HUGE explosions, and some say military grade. Only saw the photo one time and wish I had copied. I guess their suitcases were full...and this may bring some type of added screening. I remember the LA airport attack, and some said that things should be copied by Israel as an added barrier. Also, from same person who lives in Belgium: immediately following the airport bombing, the subways and mass transit should have been evacuated. This 90 minute delay happened also in Paris (I think).
