Named after Laconia, a region of Greece which includes the city of Sparta, whose inhabitants were known for being parsimonious with words and for their short, pithy remarks often including a certain amount of dry wit. In contrast to other areas of Greece where speaking and argument were admired and studied Spartan children were trained to hold rhetoric and verbosity in disdain and let their actions speak for them. Due to the Spartans' success in battle the laconic style has also come to be associated with military speech.
- When Leonidas was in charge of guarding the narrow mountain pass at Thermopylae with just 7,000 Greeks in order to delay the invading Persian army, Xerxes offered to spare his men if they gave up their arms. Leonidas replied "Molon labe" (Greek: Μολών λαβέ ), which translates to "Come and take them".
- After invading southern Greece and receiving the submission of other key city-states, Philip II of Macedon sent a message to Sparta: "If I invade Laconia you will be destroyed, never to rise again." The Spartan ephors replied with a single word: "If" (αἴκα ). Subsequently neither Philip nor his son Alexander the Great attempted to capture the city.

USAF: No More Parachuting at Fort Bragg
The airborne units at Bragg (82nd Airborne Division, much of 18th Corps, and various US Army Special Operations Command and Joint Special Operations Command elements) will now have to truck or bus 230 miles (3 ˝ hours by charter bus, 5 hours by Army truck) to Charleston, SC, and the Air Force will condescend to fly the paratroopers back to Bragg while the trucks or buses convoy back empty. Meanwhile, a second set of trucks and buses will have to be spotted on the DZ. or maybe the guys can just walk back from the field.
What the USAF is hoping, of course, is that the paras will stop jumping so damned much. They need to use the money to pay for the cost overruns on the F-35 program, so that there will still be jobs at LockMartNorGrumBoeing for retired flag officers. For some values of the word, "job."
Meanwhile, The F-35 Is Still a Train Wreck
Every system goes through teething issues in development and shakeout but the F-35 is looking more and more like a very expensive dog.
Testing of operational "dog-fighting" maneuvers showed that the F-35A lacked sufficient energy maneuverability to sustain an energy advantage over fourth generation fighter aircraft. Test pilots flew 17 engagements between an F-35A and an F-16D, which was configured with external fuel tanks that limited the F-16D envelope to 7.0 g's. The F-35A remained at a distinct energy disadvantage on every engagement.
Eleven of the 12 [WDA] events required intervention by the developmental test control team to overcome system deficiencies and ensure a successful event (i.e., acquire and identify the target and engage it with a weapon). The program altered the event scenario for three of these events, as well as the twelfth event, specifically to work around F-35 system deficiencies (e.g., changing target spacing or restricting target maneuvers and countermeasures).

She wants her sister to come to America but her sister won't leave. She was so sad, especially about the fact the people had voted for socialism and are paying such a horrible price.

I agree completely, iforgot. He tried to murder that man, using the power of gubmint. To my way of thinking, every time a prosecutor tries to hide/fails to disclose potentially exculpatory evidence, he/she should be tried for a felony with a mandatory jail term.
The gubmint is immune, but the citizens ain't. Just look at the EPA mine spill in CO for another example.

Reduces the amount of time the jet is down on the ramp, waiting for parts. Stuff like this has been showing up in commercial airline aviation for dogs' years now.
Except the architecture is set up stupidly. If ALIS doesn't clear the jet for flight, the damn thing won't fly. Literally won't fly. Will not respond to pilot commands. Cannot take off.
And since ALIS is on the net, it's massively vulnerable to hacker intrusion, just as nearly every other Fedzilla cyber system has demonstrated itself to be. Federal and military IT security is a farcical trainwreck.
And ALIS is way behind the code maturity curve to begin with. They just got the latest builds upgraded off of being hosted on Windows XP, many moons after Redmond quit supporting XP. (Microsoft of course did continue to quietly and privately support XP for certain important clients like DoD, but this is an example of how messed up the program is.)

Basically the tests in question were some in 2013/that were done with an earlier revision of the control software, with the angle of attack and the engine throttle.both limited.in software. Wosshisname left that out of his half truths and its been repeated a thousand times.since.

Well we could. The problem is that they want the fighter to be a navy fighter and a marine harrier replacement, and an airforce fighter, and want it to do the job of every single aircraft out there.
We'd probably suck at going to the moon too if you wanted the craft to also be a low earth orbit vehicle, and a satellite deployment system, etc.

I do think it is true that it can't dogfight like an F-16, but it's not designed to do that; it's designed to be a flying bomb truck, and to shoot down enemy planes before they even see it. The Pentagon claims that in simulations, when four F-35s encounter four F-16s, they splash the F-16s before the F-16s see them.
If they get it basically working, it should be upgradable. Computers can be swapped out, sensors can be swapped out, bombs and missiles can be swapped out... if we can get it past the hump, it can be improved over time. And the old planes are old and getting more expensive to maintain.
One thing I would like to see: force LockMart to give the design to Boeing and let Boeing build an "F-36". If Boeing can get the bugs out of the design and get it to operational status before LockMart does, cancel the F-35 and switch over to the F-36 program. The Pentagon has put all the eggs into one basket, and LockMart is going to make a tonne of money from the F-35 no matter how long it takes for them to get the thing working.
Also the Pentagon must never again be allowed to run a program this way. Any new planes must be incremental improvements, not "giant leap forward" designs like the F-35.
The genius of the Obama administration was to cancel the F-22 program early, on the theory that the F-35 was going to be almost as good. The F-22 turned out way better than expected and everyone agrees now that cancelling it early was a mistake. Given that the F-35 is nearly as expensive as the F-22, I'd favor spending the money to re-start the F-22 program and build more.

We did. It's called the F-22. The thing with the F-35 is that they tried to do too much with one airframe. They wanted CAS, dog fighting capabilities, STOL/VTOL, carrier launched, stealth and it had to do the dishes because the pilots were too lazy.
This brings to mind the reason the ME-262 didn't go into production in time to make a difference in WWII. Hitler wanted the 262 to be able to do ground attack like the Stuka.

One of things MDD was try and make the Hornet as fugly as Phantom by adding these jags on the leading edges of the wing and tail. Testing proved they were more hazardous and removed. The YF-17 had bleed slots for air flow over the engine inlets that lead to buffeting issues on the twin tales so they were filled in. Which still did not fix the issue so early Hornets were fitted with strakes on the LEXs to further break up the buffeting airflow so the twin tails would not wag like madly happy puppies. Then there was a spin issue where the software fix was to program the MFD to point an arrow in the direction the pilot should move his stick. And finally we can't forget that NavAir basically signed a waiver on the short range of the A model just get something to replace the A-7 and F-4 because it would have added at least a couple million dollars per plane to stuff more fuel in because they would have had to tweak the fuselage. And to ensure a Hornet will properly rotate from a cat shot, the twin rudders are commanded by the software for both of them to deflect inwards.
Then we can talk about the F-18 Super Hornet which shares nothing in common with the A/C models except the shape, the ejection seat, and data architecture. And is less maneuverable than the A and C models.

F-11 was too heavy for carrier flight decks. A Navy Admiral sacrificed his career to keep the F-11 away from the Navy.
In AF service it did fine, with the Libya raid in 1986 as it's finest hour. And there were a number of aborts and one lost in that raid.

Could be. And I really know very little about the Hagglunds saw them just the other night on Diesel Brothers show. I do like the type of vehicle since I own an Argo 8 wheel for swamping. The Hagglunds do drive all 4 tracks on both sides of the articulation which is kinda cool.

I'm not too worried about the gnome hunter thing (actually, I'm sort of grateful since I'd like a chance to get the "classy" guild achievement at some point and *more* class/race combos doesn't help that).
It's going to be a couple of weeks before my B-i-l will have time since we decided to change out the sink as well as the faucet. Until then the faucet is duct taped and leaks when on, but at least there's a plan for fixing it.

I remember one was "Airborne", but can't recall the other at the moment.
I need to get 'em, one of them has the most simple reduction of navigational trig that I've ever seen. I want that formula, and intend to fully internalize doing manual, sextant and chronometer plotting.
GPS is wonderful, but electronics can and do fail.

Lots of those formulas in Bowditch's American Practical Navigator and in Duttons.
Most of the forms are a PITA, as I'm sure you know. If I was to sail again I would have several calculators and some iPads with the right apps.
And a few paper forms in a well sealed zip-lock bag.
Having digital charts and a display for own ship's position sure would have been swell back in the day.

Last night I used the end of the bottle and today I forgot to go to the alcoholic beverage emporium.
In the back of the fridge, I found two bottles.
Illusive Traveler Grapefruit Shandy, apparently a beer. I have no idea where this came from; possibly something my daughter left us.
Also a Woodchuck Granny Smith hard cider. No idea how long that's been hanging around.
I could almost drink the cider, but I think I'll just pass tonight. Bubbles at bedtime make my stummy fussy.

Yep, gotta have Bowditch on board for any serious blue water. If you find Buckley's trig reduction though, it'll astonish you. Jaw dropping, OMG why didn't *I* think about that, kind of clarity.
And for the 'lubber, there are some great Android / iPad apps which actually do the star finding and sextant work.
I'll start with that, and work on my sextant skills till I'm matching stats with the electronic tablet. Or, till I'm within 1/4 mile of it's plot solution.
One thing I insist upon, is gen-ewe-wine paper charts for the approaches and harbor channels.
GPS is great for what it is, but it sucks at laying it all out in a big picture the way a chart does.
Charts let you strategize. GPS let's you define tactics. Plus, the charts have lots of details and info in the legends, utterly lacking on the GPS screens.
Love GPS for open water crossing, and bad weather, low vis navigation. But, I always want to take that GPS "fix", transpose it to a real chart, and have a much more solid feel for where I am, and what lies ahead.
Hopefully, by voyage's end on a crewed crossing, everyone on board will have mastered celestial nav. Take a skill home that you didn't have when starting out, right?

As for the Woodchuck... I'm not generally a big fan of ciders. They're mostly just fizzy sugar water with a bit of alcohol. But I do like Woodchuck Hopsation; it's a cider that's made IPA-style with a ton of hops, and it comes closest out of the ciders I've tried to tasting like a fresh, crisp apple.
Another thing you might consider trying if you like apples but not ciders is Sprecher Apple Pie. It's a malt beverage with apple and cinnamon flavors and, yeah, it pretty much tastes like an apple pie.

On the ferry ride north, my son and I toured the bridge. The Captain showed us the WWII surplus compass that is bolted between the windscreens (or whatever they call the forward windows) on every AK State Ferry. Apparently a lot of stuff got reuse on a lot of seagoing vessels of one type or another, and a lot of it is still in use.
He said that he loves the GPS guidance, but they still drive the boat, and in close quarters (which is what an AK ferry spends most of it time in) the compass is still used extensively.
The more things change....

John was getting his master's and then all-but-dissertation in transportation planning. I have to admit to hating Happy Valley. Hadn't realized I was solar-powered until we got there and there *was* no sun most of the time, and the political tensions between all the different taxing (and spending) authorities was stressful since I hate conflict and it was everywhere.
I could actually have used the squirrels at the statehouse in Harrisberg in my example. They are what I think of when people talk about the Weeping Angles.

When someone is found guilty, you can read the decisions, read the briefs, and sometimes, read the transcripts. In Graves, the DA had an investigation, interviewed wits, reversed and dismissed the case. They did not make public the actual evidence that they based the decision on. I know Sebesta was accused of not revealing that the co defendant said Graves was not with him. However, the co def had said this several times and then said that he was. The defense knew this. The last time the co defendent had said it, Sebesta did not turn over to the defense. But the defense knew of the other times and had the ability to cross examine and argue it to the jury. Previously, the defense had failed in an attempt to get the DA disbarred and simply refiled their complaint. That is wrong, too.

Bet you can't guess their names. Actually, since it's California, you probably can: Rodriguez and Gutierrez.
Imagine Mexicans pretending to be something they're not, phonying up documents, and breaking all sorts of laws! Wow, that's never happened before, and especially not in Californa!
I just wonder how many jobs these two frauds were hired for because they were hispanic. In California, it's more important to be PC than to be sane.

I posted a quick squib on Facebook this evening lamenting upon how NH gets to choose whom I get to vote for for President. One of my center-left friends commiserated with me.
It was the first time we'd had anything like empathy for each other on something political for, like, ever, and it was a warm feeling.
Yes, wetting the bed brings a warm feeling as well, but I take comfort where I may find it.

With all due respect, this is ridiculous. A Latin surname here is like an Irish one in Boston. The Spanish were here before anyone else, and for longer than we've all been alive a Spanish surname has been unremarkable here.
The surnames of all the people who screwed us on our last contracting job were all safely Scots-Irish.
