Overnight Open Thread (2-8-2016) – Time Machine Edition

[Since I'm tired tonight and not feeling so great, I'm just gonna set the Ace Wayback machine dial to Fall 2004 and let things roll. It was a simpler, happier time when the jokes were fresh, the ewok's coat was still sleek and tawny, people actually cared about Andrew Sullivan, and everything seemed possible. But still even with the passage of time and the ravages of disappointment and life changes it's possible to make Conservative Commando or Foxfire Ninja Babe or perhaps even "Mrs. Ace of Spades" this evening. Just remember to tack on 25% for inflation. Come on - pony a little something up for old times sake.*]

Fall Fundraising Drive

Sorry to be obnoxious, but I'm keeping this post a little sticky throughout the next couple of days. Meaning, it's going to keep getting bumped up near the top.

This is so annoying, I know. But think of me as a right-wing PBS, except instead of boring you to death with the Boston Pops and the seven-billionth "reunion" of Simon & Garfunkel (also known as "Simon & the guy who isn't Simon", I give you cutting-edge political analysis mixed in with the occasional inappropriate use of the word "pooter."

Here's the pitch:

I figure that just about everyone who reads this site would be willing to donate $1 -- one buck -- four times a year. I figure there are four reason most don't:

1) Fear about using PayPal. All I can say is that the transactions are secure, meaning coded, the same sort of deal that Amazon and other on-line stores use. I never see your credit card number. Is there a risk? Well, is there a risk when you sign your name on your credit-card receipt and give it all to a perfect stranger when you buy Urban Culottes at Banana Republic?

2) But I don't have a PayPal account! You don't need one. Only the recipient needs an account. You just need a credit card, and the will to succeed in selling distress-sale real-estate. It's what I call "Money Motivation."

Seriously. PayPal is just how the money is collected. Donors just need to click on the PayPal button and enter their digits as if they were buying books from Amazon or, more likely, Japanese pornography.

And, actually, you don't even need a credit card. You can send them a e-check, and then they credit me once that clears.

3) It's a pain in the ass. Well, it's a minor pain in the ass, but honestly, the entire process takes two minutes. I've donated myself, so I know.

4) It's almost insulting to just give someone $1; it's better to not donate at all. This is just totally wrong. I have a good number of regular readers, and if half of them -- just half -- gave me four bucks a year, I'd end up with a pretty sweet haul. Not an Andrew Sullivan gilt-edged bandwidth haul or anything, but enough that I could get my creditors off my back and finally have a good answer when my family asks me why I spend so much time screwing around on the Internet.

The big point is that it's not really the size of the donation, it's how big the donation pool is. And if all of my regular readers who haven't donated before (anyone who has donated -- your subscription is in good standing) donated, it would be-- well, it would totally, utterly sweet.

Like I said, it's a buck. About the cost of a cup of coffee at 7-11, and 133% of the cost of a single copy of the New York Times.

Of course, not everyone is going to donate-- I think probably 1% of my readers donate at most -- so if you felt like giving $3 or $5 or $10 or $20 or even $50, that would be pretty darn cool too.

Like political fundraisers, I've decided to at least give you something in return for your donation-- cool nicknames.

$1 donors are Ace of Spades Rangers. Also known as "the Lighting Guys."

$3 donors are Ace of Spades Super-Rangers. Also known as "Grahams."

$5 donors are Ace of Spades Super-Excellent Rangers. Also known as "Johns."

$10 donors are Ace of Spades Pioneers. Also known as "Vinnie Falcones."

$20 donors are Ace of Spades Pioneers Who Slice Like F'n Hammers. Also known as "Joes." But in this case, I don't need to ask "Where's Joe?" Joe is right next to my heart, buying me beer.

$50 donors are Ace of Spades Special-Detachment Ultra-Cool Conservative Commandos. At this level of donation, you're just freaking awesome you're known as "Mr. Paul Anka, the Only Important One on That Stage."

Anyone who donates more than that is some sort of special transcendent being who is actually more super-amazing than Mr. Paul Anka, if you can believe such a thing. At that level, I have to think of individualized nicknames.

At any rate, sorry for the blegging. It's something I actually have to do from time to time, though.

Just consider how pissed off Andrew Sullivan would be if every one of you guys sent $1 or $3.

Thanks.

F'n' Weisenheimer Update: Well, it's not as good as an actual donation, but Spongeworthy donates a pretty good laugh:

...

Just the other day I was thrashing a street urchin with my ebony walking stick and almost $50 fell out of my coat and I was so worn out from beating the little monkey that I just left it on the street! Fortunately another fairly prosperous looking fellow was in the area and was able to scoop up the money before the urchin could crawl over to get it.

...

So, in closing, let's just say "Not this year" and leave it at that, okay? Let's not have an embarassing scene here.

Update-- Chicks Want Better Nickames. Okay, I guess it's not cool to call a girl "Vinny Valcone." Here's my alternate scheme for nicknames for the fairer sex:

If you're one of my three female readers, and you donate $1, you get to be called Ace of Spades Spear-Carriers of Athena. Or "Babette." Your choice.

Female readers donating $3: Ace of Spades Warrior Princess. Or, um, "Stacey." Stacey's a good name. Kind of a hot name. You kind of know what you're getting with a "Stacey," and it's all good. It's allll good.

Female readers donating $5: Ace of Spades Amazon Queen. Or, ummmm... Heather.

Female readers donating $10: Ace of Spades Ilsa, She-Wolf of the Vast Right Wing Conspiracy. Or, um, "Dominique." Okay, I admit it, now I'm just handing out stripper-names. Look, pretty much everything on this site degenerates into something dirty and wrong at some point.

Female readers donating $20: Ace of Spades Barbarian Axe-Sister Who Slices Like an F'n' Hammer. Or, I guess, Krystallyn.

$50 donors are Ace of Spades Special-Detachment Foxfire Ninja Babes. At this level of donation, you're just freaking awesome you're known as "Ms. Paul Anka, the Only Important One on That Stage." Or, alternately, "Summer Brees."

Anyone female donating more than $100 gets a special nickname, which might range from "Jessie" to "Mrs. Ace of Spades."

I think it should be better than V.I.N.C.E.N.T versus Maximillian in "The Black Hole", but maybe not as good as Ahnuld's T-800 versus the Cyberdyne T-1000 in "Terminator 2: Judgement Day". I am really looking forward, though, to Yul Brynner's Westworld character as the moderator.

I have had to deal with this myself countless times and only my bank made it bearable. PayPal sucks. They are impossible to deal with directly. I'm not ever using them again.

"Share and Enjoy" is, of course, the company motto of the hugely successful Sirius Cybernetics Corporation Complaints division, which now covers the major land masses of three medium sized planets and is the only part of the Corporation to have shown a consistent profit in recent years.
The motto stands - or rather stood - in three mile high illuminated letters near the Complaints Department spaceport on Eadrax - "Share and Enjoy". Unfortunately its weight was such that shortly after it was erected, the ground beneath the letters caved in and they dropped for nearly half their length through the underground offices of many talented young complaints executives - now deceased. The protruding upper halves of the letters now appear, in the local language, to read "Go stick your head in a pig", and are no longer illuminated, except at times of special celebration.

It's also set up to allow different tiers of support so we could FINALLY get shirts if we cough up enough dough. Or ampersands. Or an ONT that doesn't have a sell-by date that looks suspiciously like it was scribbled with a Sharpie.

I couldn't believe that farmer. "How dare you not want to give us the subsidy. Forcing people to put shitty corn products in their gas tanks is what keeps us solvent. If Americans had to run their cars on creamed corn it would be even better. Every American owes it to me to run their car on as much corn as possible."

I'd have told him to he can have his subsidy as long as pays 90% of his income for the most dumbass regional gimme program I could think of -- midnight basketball or Ebonics textbooks or California's bullet train from Needles to Buttonwillow.

254 For the video-gamers -

Finished XCom 2. I'm happy to report that it isn't just the old game with a new skin *cough*Terror From the Deep*cough*. While the basic tactical engine is essentially unchanged (though it has some useful new anti-frustration features), the tactical gameplay dynamics have changed (if that makes sense). Pretty much all of the aliens have exotic abilities this time around, and the missions mix them up now. Instead of having a mission full of nothing but Sectoids or Mutons, you'll have different kinds of aliens within the patrols you find wandering around the map.

The undercover mechanic is interesting, and fun at times. But I think Firaxis made a couple of key critical errors with it. The timer (when present) also contributes to the problems I've found with it.

The strategic level of the game is quite a bit different. Research is still more or less the same, but everything else has been redone.

The thinking is that Dixville Notch is not going to let these newcomers come flouncing in to its territory and will record its ten votes in ten seconds.

Posted by: Ricardo Kill
--------------

Well, that's a bit of an undertaking. The generator is stored down a hill in an outbuilding. That requires that I trudge through the blizzard and haul the thing to the house. Then I rig a cable to a transfer switch. It's not a fun thing to do if the temperature is low and the snow is blowing. I have a threshold temperature inside the house of 60 deg., if it falls below that, then I go to the generator, otherwise, I wait.

294 If you hook up a generator, be sure and backfeed. Lineman love that.

If you try that with a dinky little generator, and there's shorted/faulted lines or significant load, you little generator can't handle it and will see an effective short.

However, if there's an open line feeding you with no load on it somehow, you can nicely backfeed and have a live high voltage line for the lineman to deal with.

If they follow safety protocol properly, they'll ground the hell of the hot lines to make sure which will short your generator.

Some linemen buddies of mine told about one time they found some idiot back feeding. It pissed them off royally. They did the worst thing they could do. The re-energized his back feed spur line, producing and out-of-sync connection. (Two sine waves out of phase). That will be the equivalent of a kick in the little generator's pants, throwing it through the roof, if the breaker's can't open in time.

They were hoping to do as much damage to the idiots generator as possible.

311 Transfer switches are the best way to do it. You separate your "emergency circuits", the ones you want to run during a power outage (this should include your refrigerator, freezer. An electric range is too big for small generators. Your gas or oil furnace with an electric blower motor and controls is another candidate).

Then you switch over to generator.

I don't mind jury-rigged setups in a pinch, but only if you know what you're doing. Do not set up a possible back-feed (you're backfeeding the mains and transformer feeding your house). That's dangerous to lineman and dangerous for other reasons.

354 340: The basic plan to do it slick and right is put you emergency circuits on their own separate little subpanel. That is fed through a transfer switch that switched between the generator input and your main panel.

Power goes off. You fire up your generator and then switch over the emergency subpanel to the generator.

That make special subpanels that use some interlocked breakers to serve as a transfer switch and subpanel all in one package.

If you want to get fancy, there are automatic transfer switches that sense power outage and automatically start up the generator and switch over. Then switch back when mains power is restored.

Those cost some bucks though, but are cool.

Well, one reason older people become curmudgeonly is that they have the time to be curmudgeonly. I will pack this bulb up, and send it with a letter to GE, expressing concern about their process/quality control. It won't be the first time.

Most likely they will return a coupon good for $20.00 or so, which is fine. Even if they do nothing, I have taken some small portion of their time, and proven to be a minor annoyance.

Light-quality depends on subject, film, and purpose.

Example - when I shoot machinery in black and white, I shoot in direct sunlight, with plenty of bounce, on Fomapan underexposed by a full stop, then develop in a cold Rodinal, with a dash of borax.

Shooting people - I go for Portra, the slower the better, and I'll underexpose by a half-stop or so, using only shadowed daylight when I can't shoot in the golden hour.

427 I was thinking of setting up a secondary emergency wiring set up in 12 v DC and use RV components for the house.
It solves a lot of the issues of shorting out the neighborhood, and if you are going to use a generator, the short lines and not much of a load, the parts are not overly expensive.

I set up the camera on its tripod with the cable release, then broke out the meter. Metering for a good color shot takes some time, as I use reflected and direct readings.... gets me 'closer' to my subject, which is always nice.

"What's that?'

It's my light meter - it tells me where to set the aperture and shutter speed to get the best image with the light we have.

"Can I see it?"

I hand it over.

They both read the label out loud, after fiddling with the clunky dials and buttons on the thing.

"Made in West Germany."

Pause, puzzled face....

"What does that mean?"

508 I'm not sure what "real jazz" means. Jazz covers such a broad spectrum of styles. Scott Joplin and Paul Anka are very different, but they're both jazz legends.

Personally, I like vocals with my music, so I'm more of an Anka/ Louie Prima/ Julie London/ Bobby Darin kind of guy when it comes to jazz

I also tend to prefer opera to other forms of classical music, for the same reason. But at least we have a separate classification for opera; jazz doesn't really have that. Pretty much any form of jazz will have vocals, or no vocals, and it doesn't really change the category. Ragtime, Dixieland, Big Band... they can all have vocals, or not, and it doesn't change the style.

Posted by: Ricardo Kill at February 08, 2016 11:17 PM (MYl0x)

TOTALLY SERIOUS Before you plug your house into the generator, you MUST disconnect the house from the power line. If you fail to do this, the most likely result is that the generator dies from trying to power the other 8 houses on your transformer, but there is a small, but non-zero chance that you could electrocute some poor lineman who puts his hand on a 15kV line he expected to be de-energized. (Yes, linemen are supposed to and normally do put shorting bars on lines under repair, but mistakes get made, especially in stormy weather, when there are a great many line problems to fix.)

538 I'm not sure what "real jazz" means.

Scott Joplin was ragtime, and that style is (was) distinct from jazz. At least from the outset, ragtime was composed music, and jazz was collective improvisation. Of course jazz musicians incorporated ragtime melodies into their repertoire, and eventually blurred the distinction.

Ms. Jenneke is a fine specimen of the human female, and it is a joy to watch her move -- just as much as it is wondrous to observe a jumping horse or springing cat. She obviously likes to move and moves well.

But she's also healthy enough to be tickled by the fact that human males will drop one wing and cluck in circles around her.....and it amuses her enough that she wants to share her amusement with other females and males alike. It doesn't cost her anything.

As such, it is a certain kind of feminism -- "I can have fun, be strong and powerful, and make you twitch whenever I want. I am not downtrodden -- I live in an empowering society where we can laugh together about each others' foibles."

I hope Australia's still holding true to that -- I fear that the US is folding into nasty, bitchy, man-hating SJW feminism.

MAx, that's a nice collection of historic and personal treasures.

The only thing I have from my father's WWII service (he never left CONUS) are the utensils from his mess kit. But they're sort of cool, too. Big "US" stamps on the handles, built very heavy. I keep them in a kitchen drawer with various cooking tools, see them every day when opening that drawer. As a kid we used to play with dad's GI web gear, backpack, helmet liner, binoculars, canteen.

Old friend has the swastika cut out of the rudder of an ME-109 his father shot down - we used to play with that as kids, too (it was just stuck in between the studs of the unfinished garage, like so much WWII treasure has been). He's got it properly stored now.

Then again, guess I could consider that I've got some GI's M1 carbine (1943 Quality Hardware) and the rifles of several soldatsfrom the Red Army (several Mosin Nagants).

There is jazz and jazz and jazz and jazz.....

I particularly dislike arhythmic aharmonic collective improvisation. I believe that music should have a beat (though I cherish odd meters); I believe music should mostly be melodious, because I believe that people are built to respond to such; and I believe that music should be structured (though improvisations such as a called-out "12-bar-blues in D" have produced wondrous results).

Where jazz has been refreshing and attractive, it has remained within these bounds; where jazz has become cacophonous noise, it has strayed.

Peter Ustinov is reputed to be one of the anonymous performers who created the "Crepitation Contest" audio recording back in the 1950's, about a British Empire farting contest, held at the Maple Leaf Gardens in Toronto. You can find it on YouTube, but beware, there are many imitations. The original is actually a satire of the CBC style of the day, performed anonymously by CBC regulars, who would have been fired, had they done it publicly. It is a real hoot.

Jazz has long had the reputation of bending the rules -- scales that didn't go "C, D, E, F, G, A, B", or didn't even fit in the "Iorian, Dorian, Lydian" space....but like the "bebop scales" were different on the way up or on the way down. Meters like 5/4, 12/8, 9/8. Tonalities that were found in Indian ragas....but, still, they acknowledged the rules, the scales, the rhythms, and the tones. They bent them without breaking them, and that worked.

Break too many, and it's noise.

562 Well, MeTV has changed their late-night lineup around (about time), and are running Rockford and Kojak.

Kojak is a good one tonight, with Susan Sullivan playing the rich bitch wife of a boring dude, with a big trust fund. He's an ecologist who likes to film birds and other wildlife.

She's an actress, and she sets up an identity as hooker from Texas, on call in a sleezy apartment. Now, she get's her husband to help her read lines from the dialogue of plays and shows she's in (he doesn't pay any attention to what's she really in).

Those lines just happen to be about having an affair with a woman, who gets pregnant and then the man demands an abortion. Which she then plays and records on the hooker identity's answering machine.

She's getting a boyfriend (who happens to be her hairdresser, or is posing as him) to kill the husband, using a gun she bought on the street in her hooker identity.

Kojak stumbled on the case after a robbery of the supposed Hooker's apartment and has heard the messages. He's trying to find out who the man is..... but it unaware the hooker is a fake identity.

I had forgotten how good Kojak stories could be...

563 AOP, you mean Basil Rathbone (or Nigel Bruce as Dr. Watson)? Not really. He's good, and he did a ton of movies, both in the Victorian era and WWII propaganda which was a pretty neat trick. But Rathbone was not quite manic enough in the role, while Brett was. I also enjoyed Christopher Plummer's Sherlock in Murder by Decree though, again, not as manic as the role requires.

IMHO, Rathbone slept walked through a lot of those old Sherlock movies.

The only Hollywood treatment to get the mania of Sherlock Holmes was the '76 version, The Severn-Per-Cent Solution, using Holmes' cocaine habit in the plot line. But not good a good movie overall.

To me, that is why Brett's Sherlock nails it. I also think Cumberbatch is a little young to portray Sherlock, but YMMV on that score. I will admit, though, that I liked Martin Freeman's Watson. He didn't portray the airhead Watson Nigel Bruce did.

As for Bruce WaW, how could someone not appreciate Suchet's fastidious eccentricities as Poirot? He gives OCD a good name. No movie version has even come close to Suchet's wonderful portrayal of Poirot. Suchet's waddle is simply the best. (Also was surprised to find out Suchet is a born again Christian, doing one of those 'Land of the Bible' series on tv.)

575 Ah, Kojak saves the day at the last minute. He figured out who the husband was, the supposed client on the phone and goes to confront in front of Susan Sullivan. He denies the affair, which is true, but Kojak repeats his words on the answering machine, the stuff about the abortion dispute.

He recognizes them, gives his wife a dirty look, but says nothing and continues to deny. Kojak warns him that hooker is going to kill him, but to no avail, and he leaves.

The guy has a confrontation with Susan Sullivan, and finally starts figuring it out. Just as that moment, her boyfriend calls with what was supposed to be the set-up to get her husband to come meet the boyfriend and shoot him.

He then realizes she's likely going to kill him, and then Susan Sullivan knocks him over the head with something. She gets the boyfriend up there and orders him to shoot the husband right then. He chickens out and she throws him out in disgust. She picks up the gun, and hesitates herself.

Now, Kojak and the boys happen to see the boyfriend coming out, he runs, and they catch him.

Meanwhile, Susan is getting her courage up and finally pulls the trigger. But nothing happens. Safety is still on. She fumbles around with it, and then reaims. At that moment , Kojak bursts into the room, and shoots here, winging her in the gun arm.

The husband then starts coming to.

And now, McCloud is coming on.

Yep, they don't write TV like that any more.

Now Kenneth Branagh can be hit or miss in a tv series. I did not like his cop role in 'Wallender', and I really wanted to like it. Branagh, for me, will always be the best Henry V, though.

I actually like Benedict Cumberbatch's Holmes quite a bit. If you read
the originals, Holmes is supposed to be pretty much a prick. A genius,
but still a prick.

I like what I've seen of his Holmes -- but it isn't period. Brett did a great job in period.....I won't give him the closeout of Suchet's Poirot, but it's a really high bar.

579 Martin Freeman's Watson is great. There was a story somewhere, that basically chided the producers for making Watson an Afghan vet, as if it was an apology for Bush and Blair. Ha - not realizing, of course, that the original Watson, in the 1880's, was an Afghan vet.

Yeah, I caught that. Really came full circle with that. But like Social Justice Wankers everywhere, one can not expect them to have any literacy. Wailing and gnashing of teeth does not require any kind of historical literacy.

583 So what is this Four Lions? A BBC series? A movie?

Posted by: Vertov at February 09, 2016 03:21 AM (UTQ/n)

584 As for Bruce WaW, how could someone not appreciate Suchet's fastidious eccentricities as Poirot? He gives OCD a good name. No movie version has even come close to Suchet's wonderful portrayal of Poirot. Suchet's waddle is simply the best. (Also was surprised to find out Suchet is a born again Christian, doing one of those 'Land of the Bible' series on tv.)
Posted by: RickZ at February 09, 2016 03:05 AM (Ix+HS)

=========
Did I say that I did not appreciate Suchet or his Poirot?? No, I didnt. Again, Ustinov is also very good. Suchet plays Inspector Jape to Ustinov's Poirot.

Suchet did a couple of docs on St Peter and St Paul which are also very good.

A very, very funny movie about a bunch of jihadis in England planning an attack. See it if you can. It's friggin hysterical. And the interesting part is that it doesn't really sugarcoat anything. A very sharp, dark humor.

Of course I can blame the kids, especially college-aged ones. They never heard of a library, or visited one? (One has to wonder if they've ever had a library card at all.) Hell, I remember the first time I was taken to the downtown Norfolk Main Library, somewhere around age 6 or 7. I was in awe of all the books. I still remember one of the first books I checked out, the story of the only US survivor of The Battle of The Little Big Horn, a horse name Comanche. At my local branch, I read every WWI fighter book by age 10, Richthofen, Rickenbacker, et.al. In grade school, the nuns cut me off from ready any more WWII/Hitler books, forcing me to read 'something else'. Boy was I bummed.

In my not so humble opinion, many/most of today's college snowflakes are lazy. May not be fair, but that's my view.

Today, it's all about being a part of the 'in' crowd: To be liked on Tweeter, to be friended on Farcebook, to text a person sitting across the table from them. I'm not sure kids can be alone with themselves today. They wouldn't know how to entertain themselves without electronic toys. And, of course, teachers teaching down to the lowest common denominator.

Until the government gets out of the education financing business, it will not get better. Now if schools held the loans, and were subject to the defaults, you'd better believe shit would change on campuses lickety-split.

Chi, no, I didn't know. The last time I was down there, 2008, the branch library off of Little Creeek (across from Little Creek Elementary) was still open. So they don't have a main library anymore, or did they relocate it? And if they just closed it down, what did they do with all the books?

My friend's Mom was the head librarian at the NATO HQ off Hampton Blvd. She had to have a security clearance just to have that job.

Yeah, I never understood the reason for an 'education' degree, a degree which teaches one how to teach, not what to teach, or form over content. But one would think colleges/universities would be better than that, but I guess with all the leftist social justice wankers on selection committees, self-selecting for stupidity is their celebratory raison d'etre.

Posted by: RickZ at February 09, 2016 04:31 AM (Ix+HS)

611 RickZ,
Not sure if they actually relocated it or not, Rick. I know that was the plan, but...

If I wasn't such a lazy shitheel, I'd Google it.
This town has become so craptastic, that it wouldn't surprise me if all the books were just dumped into the Elizabeth river & they "forgot" to open a new main branch. Or "ran out of money!"

But I'm curious now - I'll have to see whatever became of the plans.
Last day or so, free time has been dedicated to research getting my CCP. Which I now understand is easier than getting a library card, so I have that going for me.
I mentioned to one guy on the phone "John Lott" & he said "shit. You're already a mile in front of everyone else. Just by mentioning his name, if you walked in here today, I'd sign off on your certificate."
After that, $50 & an application at city hall, and I should be good to go.

629 My early morning tear-jerker: checking out the story of the last Norfolk and Western freight train through Athens County. One local wants to know how soon the line will become a bike trail. A woman takes her grandson to see the last train. You can't help but think of a railroad story by a certain Russian novelist.

Then, this: A picture of the yard outside Cincy, which for 20 years was the biggest in the world, and the follow-up comment "I was yardmaster there for years, before I became a train dispatcher for the Northern region. I guess you could say I lived my dream." (Ready?) "As a little girl, I used to run to watch the trains passing."

Aw damn, that's worth a click. And, she's a black African-American woman. Huh. You don't meet a lot of black women named Dagny? You're not looking hard enough. You want to have a drink with her, or with Beyonce?
