It is ridiculous what some people pay for a stupid box and it is pure profit to the cable companies. Star Wars This may be of interest to those of you that enjoyed the Timothy Zahn Star Wars novels. This is only spoilery if you watch Star Wars Rebels, but there is a rumor that a certain Admiral will now be included into what Disney considers canon which means that this Admiral is now a player for future movies as well. Jeopardy BloopersThe Ultimate Jeopardy Bloopers Supercut by worldwideinterweb ...some speculated that the State Department had discouraged Boeing from attending to avoid the appearance that U.S. companies that supported the Iran deal were profiting from its implementation.Vegetables Asparagus, beets, carrots and your urine. I didn't know this part about carrots. British gunners in WWII were able to locate and shoot down German planes at night due to significant advancements in radar technology. To help cover up their improvements on the technology, the British spread about an urban legend that said that they were able to increase the night vision of their pilots by having them consume large amounts of carrots. This propaganda campaign included stories about certain pilots like Lieutenant John "Cat Eyes" Cunningham who they said had exceptional night vision thanks to a habit of eating large amounts of carrots. This lie not only gave birth to an urban legend, but also caused many British people to start planting their own vegetable gardens, including planting and eating a large amount of carrots so that they'd be able to see better during blackouts. I also had no idea that MI6 used semen as invisible ink which happened to be led at the time by Captain Sir Mansfield Cumming. Beer UAS ![]() ![]() Comments(Jump to bottom of comments)1

From the affirmative kissing BS -- With increasing talk about sexual assault on college campuses, the Queer and Ally Student Assembly in conjunction with the Women's Student Assembly at USC organized the event, which included carnival games, food and prizes in its attempt to bring awareness to the idea of sexual consent. The most surreal thing happened today. In one of my many jobs, I deal with an insane supervisor who treats experienced people like they're 18. Most are over 45. So I've been complaining that when he yells at us (he's a yeller) that it's stupid because we're not kids. I gave several examples to co-workers of how he could handle us more effectively.
Well... today there was an issue, and he gave the entire crew the talk that I said he should give. But never told him. He hit all of my talking points. Do you know how bizarre it is to be scolded using your own talking points that you never gave someone? Posted by: shibumi, RIP USA at January 29, 2016 10:29 PM (gisJf) 56

I'm Canadiaaaan ...." as he runs away. Classic. The carrots/night vision/radar cover-up story is just the tip of the iceberg (I said "iceberg", pervs). Churchill's famous line that in war, truth is so precious it must everywhere and always be accompanied by a bodyguard of lies, was carried into action to an incredible degree in WWII, especially to protect the "Ultra" secret. Commanders were restricted from exploiting intercepts in certain ways in certain cases where there wasfear that the Germans would correctly conclude their communication were not secure. The decisive anti-U boat campaign included all sorts of efforts to convince the Germans that airborne radar was the reason Allied patrol aircraft had such an uncanny success rate in finding them. In fact the key, of course, was reading Donitz's mail and knowing which grid squares had U-boats assigned at a given time. As far as I'm aware only Donitz and his branch actually concluded, despite all the deceptions, that the Allies had broken the Enigma system, but they were not able to convince the relevant players of this and were forced to continue to rely on the compromised system. Does this consent thing apply to the boys as well as the girls? I assume it technically does because equality, but shouldn't the girl have to ask for consent as well as give it every 10 minutes or seconds or whatever.
If some chick hauls some dude up on these charges, he should counter-charge she wasn't asking him for consent, either. I'm sure they've got some trick to deal with that, though.... Posted by: publius (not Breitbart publius) at January 29, 2016 10:43 PM (dvuhZ) 120

>>Here's the weird thing--I've read about porn seminars taking place on
college campuses. How does that jibe with the sexual consent and campus rape culture tropes? The key to understanding the two seemingly conflicting messages is to remember both are about control. Encouraging kids to engage in a lot of sex with random people, experiment and whatnot is about getting them to abandon privacy, self-control so that they are better tools of the state (especially is they don;t form lasting relationships, families - a nation of Julias). See this: http://www.americanthinker.com/articles/2010/07/sex_and_state_power.html The rape culture/new sexual prudery is also about control - about getting others involved in every dang sexual encounter, such as with signing consent forms, making all bad sexual encounters the business of school authorities. Controlling relationships so that these kids don;t feel they're capable of initiating a relationship without oversight. Posted by: Lizzy at January 29, 2016 10:44 PM (NOIQH) 126
Porn on campus is all about sticking a thumb in the eye of bourgeoisie morality. They'll claim that girl being filmed in a gang-bang is somehow "empowered" as a means of encouraging girls to be promiscuous.

tsrblke's post doesn't match the Rice experience. There it was, "live on campus, under our exorbitant rates, or else deal with Houston's traffic in order to get here".

What's the big deal France had (has?) open air pissoirs for centuries.
One of the few things I admire the French for. Why is it that everyone is okay for there to be NO WHERE to pee downtown in most cities? Co ed has always been a disaster for men. We're more easily distracted. And now look what's happening. It's almost as if the liberals hate Western Civilization. Do they not believe the jihadis will gladly include them in their plans? Posted by: Bitter Clinger 1.0 and All That at January 29, 2016 10:56 PM (Xo1Rt) Modern education, preschool through college, has been a disaster for males. It simply is not designed to accommodate typical male behaviors at any age from toddler on upward. Males are supposed to act like girls, essentially. Many are unable to achieve this, and drop out in one way or another. And yet, the drumbeat of "empowering women" continues to mindlessly pound through our society. I quit cable mostly over the stupid set top box. (mostly)
They converted everything to digital even the basic channels. and they raised the rate. the topper(s) was when the box they gave me was a clunky POS (I had a digital TV yet I had to GLUE a sensor over the IR channel sensor for the box to work and then the final indignity the damn thing didn't work. Took it back for replacement and the person behind the shield (here in PA they use a clear plexiglass shield. bullet proof I assume cause it's about an inch thick. And that tells you all you need to know about their customer service) was so confused and couldn't figure out how to get me a new kit that I just told her to cancel my service. Still took her 5 minutes to do that. AND it took 3 months to get my refund and to finally stop having a bill sent to me. And they wonder why people hate them. I went to an all-male high school. (I've mentioned this.)
Keeping out the girls is not going to solve the male distraction problem. They'll sneak off to find the females, or will just get really drunk and/or beat off to lots of pr0n. And then there's that Patriarchy thing, which is indeed a thing, where everyone is obsessed with where they rank on the hierarchy relative to the other males. So, not sold that keeping girls out will help boys. Posted by: boulder terlit hobo at January 29, 2016 11:04 PM (6FqZa) 217

It's not even hating Western Civ, for lefties it's a case of pathology-- guilt for having it so good and then it's mixed with sado-masochism. They really are sadomasochists which accounts for their tolerance for Islamists. They have a deeply buried admiration for successful cruelty.

Nothing 'almost' about it. They loath Western Civilization.
Posted by: Puddleglum at January 29, 2016 11:06 PM (RZz4G) They despise it with every fiber of their being, and they hate it because it works and it works consistently. The Leftist anti-philosophy rests on a notion that there is no objective truth in politics or human relations. If there's no objective truth, all ideas are equal, and their success or failure is random chance. Western Civilization is based on facts and reason, thus has been on a winning streak for thousands of years, and it makes them hopping mad. They see everything we've defeated along the way as victims, they see us as cheaters, and they think they can make the world fair by destroying our civilization. And of course, then Communism will finally work somewhere. The fact that objective reality will still exist and make their unworkable schemes continue to fail does not intrude into their tiny little minds, because they believe everything is subjective. Heh. Today I was filling out a Gov't form and there were two blocks to describe my 'ethnicity'. The first one asks if I am 'Hispanic', Yes/No, then, there is a block that offers separate choices where I choose 'White', because I'm privileged. Anyhow, I realized that this must be a consequence of George Zimmerman. Apparently there are now entirely distinct sub-categories of 'Hispanics'... or maybe subcategories of Whites & etc.

Internet porn has killed all the girlie magazines of our youth. Playboy is trying to become a non-porny "real magazine" to survive. I doubt it will work, but they were dead otherwise.

If you want a movie analogy for Trump's continued following, probably the best is "Scent of a Woman", particularly the disciplinary hearing. The GOPe is the Baird School, Reince Preibus is Mr Trask, Jeb Bush is Phillip Seymour Hoffman's character George Willis, the base is Chris O'Donnell's Charlie Simms being set up to take the blame, and Trump is Lt Col Frank Slade telling them in vulgar ways what they don't want to hear.
And Reince, Karl, Rupert, wherever you are out there ..... FUCK YOU TOO!!!! Posted by: kbdabear at January 30, 2016 12:20 AM (6UhJE) 439

(Note, I didn't say: "the Conservatives".) Posted by: boulder terlit hobo at January 30, 2016 12:12 AM (6FqZa) Republicans and Democrats. Both of them are on board the New World Order bandwagon, the only thing they disagree on is whether they want socialist titles, star chambers, and "camps for adults" or to keep pretending at being a Republic while they stuff their pockets with public money. That's actually a pretty small disagreement, since they both believe in the rule of the unwashed masses by an "enlightened" elite in a distant capitol. See that recent Megan McArdle article. She's almost coming out and saying "I was wrong" about free trade, at least with China.
There's a new study out, a real heavyweight one economic establishment wise, that finds that free trade with China has hurt the American middle class. Megan kinda sorta says its right and then kinda sorta makes excuses. There was another article by someone who re-ran the original numbers on the Mariel boatlift. There was some study, taken as seminal gospel by the open borders and MOAR IMMIGRATION types that that the influx of low skilled Cubans did not depress the low-skilled American job market. His analysis found just the opposite, and then he went on to detail how the original work fudged the numbers. IOW, the data is showing the free-trade/open borders mantra has been a big lie on the scale of globull warming. Posted by: publius (not Breitbart publius) at January 30, 2016 12:22 AM (dvuhZ) 446

It no longer matters what you do for a living, if you're in the private sector; you can be replaced by a cheaper foreign worker. "It is a very strange experience to drive down 280 into Silicon Valley,
and see a whole lot of trees on buildable land, within nice commuting distance of very ordinary houses that sell for 700,000+." There are influential, well-funded citizens' committees firmly dedicated to goals such as keeping the Valley foothills green. Upon inquiry, you will learn that the citizens in question themselves already own large homes upon nice big spreads in those foothills. But of course they do not want for the foothills to become entirely green. Heavens no. They'd have to move. What they're trying to avoid is having close neighbors. They're not keen on the idea. Especially not keen to welcome as neighbors those brown folks stuffed into high-density housing down in the Valley flats. Posted by: torquewrench at January 30, 2016 01:04 AM (noWW6) 520

Cable Lobby
Man, I really hope the FCC new set-top box competition plan comes to fruition. It is ridiculous what some people pay for a stupid box and it is pure profit to the cable companies. Question for the tech-minded among the horde: I subscribe to cable -- but for Internet connection only, not for TV. Never have subscribed to or watched cable TV. HOWEVER, by sheer crazy chance, I recently came into possession of an abandoned and discarded "cable set-top box" with an "M-Card" in it. (Friend of a friend was moving out of the country and just left it behind, and no one else had a use for it.) The box is pretty old -- I think it dates from 2008. By now pretty obsolete. I wondered what would happen if I just plugged one end of the box into the cable for my cable internet connection, and then plugged the other end of the box into the TV. Result? Well, no free cable TV, but the connection obviously is being made successfully, because when I look at the on-screen "schedule" I can see the full current live on-air list of all the cable shows being broadcast at the moment, plus in many cases little in-screen mini-picture teaser videos of the current or upcoming show this hour. I thought at first that I got zero channels, but after repeatedly clicking "channel up" from 1 through 999, I actually found four channels that worked -- two Chinese language channels, one public access channel, and one local channel. All viewed though the cable box. Nut none of the expected channels (CNN, stuff like that). The regular channels only give a "poor signal quality" message because they are likely scrambled. I poked around online forums and supposedly learned that, No, zombie, there is simply no way you can "hack" the box to make it work to get you free cable. I suggested something wacky: Taking the box to the home of a relative (who cooperates with the scheme), plug it into their functional cable TV connection, then calling Comcast and telling them there's something wrong with the signal and to resend the "refresh/unscramble" signal down the line to update the box's firmware. THEN, unplug the box, restore the relative's original cable box, and then take my updated box home, and plug it in, and just maybe it would then work! But no, I was informed: You MUST tell Comcast the serial number of the device, because that is required for the signal they're going to send, and when they see the serial number, they're going to know that the box doesn't "belong" at the relative's house, it belongs with the now-overseas friend of a friend. And that technically, the box probably belongs to Comcast, and that it's rented (the topic of the linked article above) and they're wondering what happened to the subscriber who left the country and never returned the equipment. So instead f sending the signal I want, they'd demand the return of the box, or send a bill for its cost to my unwitting relative. So that plan was jettisoned. So, I ask ye: Is there ANY way to get this thing to work as I intend? If a person has a cable connection (which has the TV signal in it, as well as the Internet), and one has a box to receive it, is there ANY way to make that box capable of descrambling the signal, other than having the cable company send the update to the box? Or is it a completely lost cause? Posted by: zombie at January 30, 2016 02:21 AM (jBuUi) 591

Posted by: The Torrented Hat But what would I look for on BitTorrent? Despite being confidently informed by many folks that there's no way for my plan to work, I did more poking around and found that various brainiac hacker types have purportedly found ways to communicate with the M-cards, and reverse-figured out what signal needs to be sent to them to activate them, and that technically it IS possible to therefore hack the boxes -- but no one reveals the secret anywhere online because they don't want the cable companies coming after them. Posted by: zombie at January 30, 2016 02:21 AM (jBuUi) It's not as simple nor as safe as it was before cable tv went full digital. I can think of some schemes that might "share" a virtual box across several time zones, but they're likely to be impractical. You could try and reverse-engineer the box -- which, BTW, almost certainly runs LINUX internally -- and have it decode things with your friend's credentials.....but you couldn't get the cable company to send content to your location. To get a little technical, here....regular internet, AKA IP4, maps things to addresses that are four 0-255 numbers long. Sort of like having 256 cities with 256 streets and 256 intersecting avenues, each having a skyscraper with 256 floors. That's a metric fuckton of addresses (4,294,967,296, to be exact) -- but, you'll note, this is significantly less than the population of the earth (7,300,000,000). And in much of the world, everyone has a whole bunch of internet-widgets: your cellphone, each of your computers, your televisions, your roku, your tablet, etc. And then there are industries using internet-connected devices. Large blocks of these addresses are reserved for special situations. In short, every IP4 address -- which are limited by mathematics -- probably has at least 100 folks that want to use it. The way this is handled is that the routers on the ends of this communication do an extra split based on who is supposed to be talking to who. Accordingly, if you call the right city, the right street and avenue, and get to the right floor of the skyscraper, the router for that floor asks, "do you want Mr. Smith in 103 or Ms. Jones in 108?" It's likely to be flummoxed if it's asked to connect to Mr. Zombie in 207. So, even if you get past the descrambling thing -- there's no guarantee that the signal will get piped to you. Posted by: cthulhu By "signal," are referring to the scrambled TV content itself, or are you referring to the one-time-only firmware refresh signal? Because it seems (as described in my question) that the TV signal is already currently flowing through my coaxial cable -- albeit in scrambled form. I have no intention of trying to watch anything like pay-per-view or on-demand programming, so there's no need to send any special signal to a special address (except for that one-time-only signal). But I doubt if that's done in many places any more. There's only room for about 100 conventional AM channels in a fiber -- but if everything goes digital and is switched, 400 channels is reasonable. If you're getting internet from a CATV provider, I'm figuring you're probably digital/switched. Posted by: cthulhu at January 30, 2016 03:20 AM (EzgxV) 604

Prithee, don't take my observation as any attempt to claim authority on the subject -- I was doing "cutting edge" stuff in the 90's and went on to other things. What I am saying is that "transmitting a bunch of channels on usual analog channel spacing, some scrambled" is old technology -- and my belief is that it was all swept away with the big digital turnover. 2. Any work of man can be undone. The question is: what resources would you bring to the undoing? The cable companies are bringing corporate-level resources to try to lock you out of their encryption. 3. Maybe you're making this too hard. Let's say you have a friend who regularly watches a program you want to watch. Build a DVR at your friend's house and stream it to yourself over the internet. Apropos of nothing,
I found out today that the crazy hoarder lady down the street isn't crazy at all. She just hates people, like me. My Saturday will consist of a few hours under her house replacing the last few floor joists, then trying to talk her out of one of the 5 riding mowers rusting away in her backyard. Well, that's after I go across the street to empty the rat traps in Shirley's garaage. She's grossed out just looking at them, so won't touch them. Not sure, but I might be a sucker... FWIW, it is legal for me to have chickens here within city limits, but I would be under very strict regulations. One of which is allowing a Government Agent onto my property whenever he/she wants to "inspect."
Nope. I'll just get my eggs from big Sis, thank you very much. I really want some yardbirds, though. I may still build a coop behind the back garage, then try to sneak in a few hens surreptitiously this spring. If I could only trust Tucker to not ear them... And, of course, they "lost" all their identity papers. It's going to be very amusing dumping all these folks at the Karachi airport immigration kiosks.
___________________ What makes you think the Pakistani government will let those planes land? Some of the northern African countries which have been dumping their undesirables into Europe as "refugees" have already said they don't want them back. Was reading an article yesterday about a town in Sweden that is being plagued by roving gangs of "refugee" thugs -- most of whom are Moroccan. Think the government of Morocco is just going to wave these crooks back in? It will be like the Mariel boatlift -- any country stupid enough to let another country dump its criminals, sick, insane, terminally lazy, etc., on it is going to be stuck with them forever.
