Thread Two: Debate, Counter-Event

I once again renew my objection about moderators making themselves so central to a debate.

That is good and proper for a Meet the Press appearance. But this is a debate; the candidates are supposed to interrogate each other.

Well..., that escalated quickly. Let's look at the article, and what Trump said:

"While disabled veterans should be given every opportunity to earn a living, is it fair to do so to the detriment of the city as a whole or its tax paying citizens and businesses?"

By "detriment of the city," the future GOP frontrunner meant "detriment of Trump Tower," which sits on Fifth Avenue. While it is known as a ritzy shopping district in New York, Fifth Avenue is also the home of dozens of opportunistic street vendors. Many of them are disabled veterans who are given special licenses by the Department of Consumer Affairs. According to The Daily News, the protections and exceptions extended to peddling veterans date back to the 1890s and were created to give those who were disabled in the Civil War an opportunity to support themselves.

Though previous attempts to relocate veterans to streets where they would make less money didn't work, Trump was undeterred. In 2004, he wrote to then-mayor and possible future presidential rival Michael Bloomberg, imploring him to help get rid of the wounded warriors on his street.

"Whether they are veterans or not, they should not be allowed to sell on this most important and prestigious shopping street," he wrote. "The image of New York City will suffer... I hope you can stop this very deplorable situation before it is too late."

Immigration yes it's a trap of the international left.

Let's say we were able to build the wall and deport enmass. Rolling back immigration would by us a little time. Next Dem president would just reopen the floodgates. Absent the downsides of immigration the left would have a easier time "framing" the whine ordeal.

Speaking of the left and immigration Yes some of the people coming here are hostile to our values. We already have lots of people here who are openly hostile with us. . Either we as a people start dealing with these people or we accept our destruction will continue regardless of elections or immigration

This is why I thought Rubio's embarrassing pandering would work on them. Hey, fellow Christians, Jesus said be gentle as doves and shrewd as snakes. Don't just fall for anyone who claims to be a Christian.

I don't doubt that's Rubio is a committed Christian, but they should remember that's he readily capitulated to the Supreme Court ruling on gay marriage wild Ted Cruz did not.

It's okay to support Rubio, but just that he talks about Christianity when he's trying to win votes in Iowa should not be your sole reason, people.

My mother is like that too, trusting anyone who says he is a Christian, even to her detriment. It's very frustrating.

Well, I guess the people supporting him because he's "cute"are even worse.

Doesn't change the fact that Trump does what is good for Trump. When he felt veterans were cluttering up his sidewalk he tried to have them removed as blight. When it was good for him to find a distraction from his no show at the debate, suddenly vets are a cause for him. I don't think Trump hates vets and I don't think Trump loves them either. They, like most people and things, are just props to be used for his own benefit. It is still cool though that vets get 4.something million out of the deal.

522 Buying votes? Why do you think I exist?

Posted by: $20T Public Debt

no, $200T is more like it considering unfunded liabilities which are also there to buy votes. If they were honest they'd not sell the next generation into tax slavery. And the $600T still unregulated derivative market, hope that holds together. And since the only budget restraints on the annual deficit are msotly due to military cuts, those savings are also used to buy votes, but endanger the country, and sell short the vets.

All the devils are here. But the focus is on hating Trump because he may not play ball with the establishment.

Okay, so:

On a scale of 1 to 10, where 10 is Saint Ronald Reagan, and 1 is Bernie Sanders' Even Crazier Communist Uncle, I would say:

Cruz:
Before debate he was a 9, now I think still a 9, the immigration
exchange with Rubio hurt him a little bit, but he made up for it with
his awesome ethanol answer

Rubio: Before debate he was a 4, now I think he is a 3, he is just so totally fake, it just oozes

Rand:
Before debate he was a 3, now I think he is a 5 or 6, he gave some
really good answers and I am impressed by him more and more, he seems to
be laying off the crazy sauce

Jeb: Before debate he was a 2, now I think he is a 1

All others: don't bother

Well said. I guess I am sort of "Trump-curious," as Ace described his position at one point. I do not trust him to be conservative, which completely sucks, except maybe more conservative than anyone else on immigration, if he is not lying his ass off. The one thing I do trust him to do is kick Hillary's ass (Scott Adams has convinced me of this much), and I don't think I can convince myself that that would be worse than Hillary.

But I would love an alternative, preferably Cruz. Really wish so many of the people I talk to didn't hate Cruz for some sort of visceral reason they can't seem to describe.

602 Now Megyn is now interviewing Cruz, and STILL going after him on the immigration bill. He gave a pretty good explanation, but you can tell that is what FOX will be going after over and over.

Ted Cruz has been my guy for over a year now, and while I've considered everyone else who has come along, they all fall short of Cruz.

603 Trump military experience per wiki:

>>>he was not drafted earlier because of four student deferments (2-S)
while attending college, and after receiving a medical deferment (1-Y,
later converted to 4-F)<<<

604 Did they eventually bring out the Muslim activist gal, or just the 'aren't I good enough for your country' illegal Mexican babe? I'm a little surprised they even went through with that since their only purpose was to attack Trump.

Posted by: professor_chaos at January 28, 2016 11:28 PM (ESWK5)

605 Wow, Megyn is backing up Cruz on his Amnesty position.

She didn't act that way during the debate, though. Just the opposite.
Posted by: Jason M at January 28, 2016 11:26 PM (4oYqL)

That's ok. She wasn't there to boost him. Honestly, I don't mind the tough questions at all as long as they are substantial. If they were going to show video of Rubio's promises, then Cruz was fair game.

607 @596

Yup, she's rerun the debate clip at least 3 times already too.

Now that she has her fake "gotcha" and no one is watching she can go back to telling the truth.

609 Over a five-year span, from 2009 to 2013, the Donald J. Trump foundation gave just $57,000 to veterans’ groups, according to an estimate Forbes made last December. A significant portion of that comes from a single $25,000 donation in 2011, to the Fisher House, which helps provide homes to veterans and their families.
----------------

In 2009 the foundation gave $100,000 to The Clinton Foundation.
Priorities.

610 Trump needs a huge knowledgeable GOTV team air dropped soon, to turn his momentum into Iowa votes. Surely he won't just drop the ball ... but new voters, hard to say. Will be interesting at least. First test for his executive abilities in the new arena of politics.

Of course Trump is working other states while Cruz is pinning a lot on Iowa giving him a jump start.

612 I've said it before and I'll day it again we need to splinter fix. The left has multiple outlets for different flavors you know if you want the creepy quiet voice of NPR or the you want the shouting crazy frothing MSNBC you have lots of choices. for conservatives only have one choice is a bad move and makes a very vulnerable to leta say the infestation

Posted by: Shiggz at January 28, 2016 11:33 PM (G7wcY)

613 You want some weird shit, visit the MLK memorial in
DC.

He wanted a world where there was no preferential treatment, and those who claim to be carrying on his fight want nothing but preferential treatment.
---------
King was very much in favor for affirmative action-type programs for Black Americans. He was definitely not against preferential treatment.

Since you have real and picked through this, who else did the Trump foundation give to, and how much?

Posted by: Tim in GA at January 28, 2016 11:35 PM (q9Mkv)

617 Lame. Moderators gang up on Cruz, everyone posturing about ISIS.

Thoughts on ISIS:
--In Syria? LET PUTIN AND ASSAD HANDLE THEM. Are we *really* committing ourselves to fighting Putin, who has made it clear he will prop up his puppet Assad?
--In Iraq? The Obamunist pulled out too soon. NOBODY SAID THAT, and somebody should have.
--After all the damage the Obamunist has done to the military, it will take a few years to get it up to snuff again.

618 And Trump's generosity for Vets has only manifested itself since he announced.

Posted by: Mike Hammer, etc., etc. at January 28, 2016 11:05 PM (Z58Xa)

With respect, Mike, don't you think that it's deplorable that vets, wounded or otherwise, have to scratch out a living peddling junk off handcarts on Fifth Avenue? That's Third-World stuff right there.

If Donald Trump's self-serving politicking raised enough coin to get some of those men off the street and into more gainful employment, then good on him.

Of course I do. I've worked with these guys for years. The organization that I am with is about to start on a significant expansion of housing for homeless Vets. Right now is the third largest transitional facility for homeless male veterans in the nation. We have training programs in place, treatment, etc., etc.

I am ELATED that funds will be available for Vets. BUT, I have no illusions about The Donald and his motivations in this deal. This abrupt interest in the well-being of Vets is cynical and self-serving. The two are separable.

Posted by: Mike Hammer, etc., etc. at January 29, 2016 12:00 AM (n22zQ)

621 Ace you will be happy to know that Cruz moved up a notch tonight.. by not being a jerk, and because Trump is a coward.

Of course Rubio is the man.

I hope Iowa and especially NH ditch Trump for Rubio soon.

Trump is just such a coward.

622 ...interest in the well-being of ... is cynical and self-serving...

It's for the children. Was Sally Struthers cynical? How about Megyn Kelly? Because they sure-as-hell were and are self-serving.

Anyone you see on TV meets your description. All the organizations. I'll believe when organizations start asking for time, and mean it, instead of money. Possibly big brother big sister? Anyone know?

623 I don't know if it was because they get told to say everything with a smile on their faces, but the moderators always looked smug when asking questions, filled with their own importance.

It was as if they think they were the stars, and the candidates were props.
