Another Nail in The Coffin Holding Our Freedom [CBD]

"Presidential alerts are mandatory and cannot be turned off."

I'm sorry, but I must have missed the part in the United States Constitution where it says that the president's words must be transmitted to my private phone.

The symbiotic relationship between government and business has been growing for years, but rarely is it this obvious.

[addendum] This is a Samsung Galaxy S6 on the Sprint network. The alert system is in the texting app, which is built into to the operating system.

And Moron Country Singer dug this explanation up in the bowels of the FCC's website.

And an early Thread Winner.....

Can I respond to a mandatory presidential alert with a selfie of my ass?

Is this a carrier's decision or something the WH is making them implement? If the former, some timely calls or plan cancellations should end the nonsense. If the former, God have mercy on us.

88 As we've all seen on this or that TV episode, your smart phone is not really your friend. All of your texts can be subpoenaed, all of your calls, all of your Internet usage, and all of the geo-locations the phone has been to as you lug it around. A lot of geeky types now carry their phones in foil pouches and use them only in wifi spots with heavy traffic. Most truly paranoid people have two phones and they keep the battery out of both phones along with the sim cards.

Actually on the cell phone, you bought the sim card, which had to be registered to you.

They didn't care about the phone, and you could move the sim card back and forth to thirteen different phones if you wanted to.

But either way, your access to a cell carrier system was predicated on using a registered sim card, associated with your Codici Fiscali.

Partially correct. Blacks flocked to the polls in the fall of 2006, where they voted their customary straight-ticket Democratic, helping produce the doubleheader takeback of both the House and the Senate by Democrats. Oops.

I keep a brick of Seven Oceans life-raft rations. It's foil-wrapped, waterproof and permanent, and each square is enough calories to call a meal. There are nine in a brick, so you've got food for three days, or three people for a full day. Small enough to fit in most go-to-hell bags. It tastes mildly of coconut, but not enough of anything to tempt you to raid your kit.

Heat is the real problem for bug-out bag provisions in cars.

Even for sturdy stuff like MREs, if you look at the fine print, the safe storage life gets a lot shorter when they're stored at temps over 80F, and the typical car trunk spends a good chunk of the year being a _lot_ hotter than that.

The only solution I've found is rotating the stuff out every three months.

204 If you ever actually need your bug out bag, the situation is dire. Like, you are seeing your home in flames in your rear view mirror, that kind of dire.

Depends on your situation - I didn't have a bug-out bag for a long time as I didn't figure that there was going to be any reason to leave my home on a moment's notice. There was simply no better place to flee to, so if I left it would be only after a sufficient time to pack and decide where to go.

When I did decide to put together a dedicated BOB is was as much for fun as anything else, as when mainly intended to allow me to live out in the woods (a rather unlikely scenario, admittedly). Now that I have my own apartment, it designed primarily to get me to my parents house, possibly on foot, about fifteen miles away, and secondarily to allow me to cope with something unexpected. I'll be first to admit that it isn't very well thought-out, as my disaster-preparedness planning tends to get mixed in with my desire to play mountain man...

Generally speaking, I think the first question should be "where will I bug-out to?" followed quickly by "why would I want to leave here and face the rigors of the road?" In my case my parents house is both a better place to sit out a disaster than my apartment and I suspect that my parents will need me around there.

1st rule of Bug-Out is: don't listen to a goddam word written in the scads of survival magazines. They exist only to sell you merchandise. They are PAID to push the items they push. They do not have your best interests at heart. And their how-to articles are superficial and useless.

2nd rule of Bug-Out is: you MUST put your kit to the test out in the wild, then modify and test again (repeat as necessary.) You must, period. Primitive camp overnight, using ONLY what you carry in. Then go for two days and nights. Then try for more. It's a lot easier with a partner or two, so you can split up the carrying of heavier, shareable items. e.g. one carries a cooking grate and one carries an axe. You'll both use both items, but you don't have to carry both.

I worked my way all the way up to a full week of primitive camping - in the Moab desert - with a survival-minded buddy. Not only is that a long time to live off what you carried in on your back, but we are easterners who had zero experience in the desert and were WAY out of our turf. So it was tough. But we survived. Had a blast, actually, and memories that will last a lifetime.

My Bug-Out kit has undergone extensive revision due to putting it to actual use in real bug-out conditions. It's the only way to learn.

213 So. I had a coupon for a Medium Chicken Tortilla Soup that was due to expire in a few days. So I went to Chick-fil-A to redeem it, and also bought a hateful chicken club sandwich while I was at it.

It was a left turn to get to Chick-fil-A, and I sat in the center turn lane for what seemed like an eternity waiting for the traffic to thin out. Another car pulled in behind me, and he started leaning on his horn whenever there was more than a microsecond of space between cars. I guess his plan was to make me turn into oncoming traffic, cause a fatal accident which would block the road, whereupon he could calmly make his turn.

Eventually he ran out of patience and pulled out around me and made his turn, causing another driver to slam on his brakes and mash his horn. Dude must have really been hungry.

Oh, and I stopped at the supermarket on the way home and bought the winning Powerball ticket, so y'all can give up now.

Settings > Notifications > Government Alerts

The Government Alerts is at the bottom of the Notification screen on IOS 9.x.

Mrs. Hobbit and I both have Amber Alerts turned off but the Government Alerts are on.

While it's annoying to get Tornado Watch alerts in the middle of the night, because we get them all the time in the DFW area, we were actually glad to get the Tornado Warning alerts on December 26th.

For me, one of the Tornado Warnings said that there was a tornado in the sky nearby, while for Mrs. Hobbit, it told her that there was a tornado on the ground nearby. She was within a half-mile of the tornado that hit Garland and Rowlett, stuck inside a store with the electricity out.

Last week, we visited the areas of Garland and Rowlett hit by the tornado and it was sobering. I honestly don't know why hundreds weren't killed.

I concur with everything you said.

I'll add:

1. Don't buy a pre-made/pre-filled bag. Most of the contents are crappily made and/or things (or in quantities) you'll never use.

2. Don't over fill it. You'd be amazed at what you toss out or decide really isn't that critical after you've walked a few miles with the bag on your back. There's a whole cottage industry on the Appalachian Trail of people selling gear that hikers have jettisoned.

3. If you're interested in building a bag, I'm going to recommend this site: http://www.ebugout.com/
I don't know the guy (but I've heard an interview with him). I have played with the site and like how it's set up, along with the fact that everything they list a. they have tested themselves and b. they include a weight that gets tallied so you know how much your bag would weigh.

Mrs. Hobbit sent me out to the local convenience store and buy 5 tickets while ago. I'm so naive that she had to tell me to say "5 Powerball Quick Picks." Not that she has much more experience buying lottery tickets than I do -- her brother told her to tell me how to buy the tickets.

I went reluctantly, saying that we had about as much chance of winning the lottery as we do as, um, winning the lottery.

There are three gas and convenient stores at this particular corner. The parking was full at all three and I had to stand in line for 5 minutes.

229 I keep a brick of Seven Oceans life-raft rations.

My home is pretty secure and I'd prefer to bug in right here, but if I look down the street to see the advance of the rising water, leaping flames, or howling mob, then I'd like to have the option to leave here in a hurry without having to take a lot of time to pack.

The concept also simplifies long road trips under normal conditions. Tossing the bugout into the car checks a lot of the boxes that need to be checked, in one single action.

Even apartment dwellers like me can do it. I have half a walk-in closet set up with pantry shelves. The important thing is to not just buy a bunch of shit, stack it on shelves and wait for the SMOD.

You have to use the stuff, and rotate and replenish.

And don't forget the most important thing-water. Store lots in your home Those big 3.5 qt jugs are perfect. Or get a gravity-fed home system such as a Big Berkey. And for the road, a quality filter is an absolute must. I use the Katadyn Hiker Pro, but there are lots of good options.

Bug-out ...

This is my shorter version of the various bug-out comments I've posted here over the years.

If you live in NYC or New Orleans (where there is no food or water), or in the inner-city-part of Chicago, St Louis, Pittsburgh, Philadelphia, or Baltimore, then you very probably need to leave. Are you preparing now? No? Why not? When the time comes for you to leave, it's too late. You will be better off staying where you are.

Otherwise, you're better off staying where you are. Keep your your shelter, water, electrical power, supplies, unquestionable citizenship status, right to vote, etc.

The last 2 are starting to look very much more important. Get your passport, SS card and birth certificate, before someone else does .

Bugging-out abandons all of these things, and exposes you to the "Survivor: LA Road Warrior Edition". Expect to die, hungry, dehydrated and out of gas on some crowded desert road with a lot of other people.

The key is having a plan (or actually, multiple plans) and rehearsing that plan. If you have a plan to go to a specific place (a relative's house, the deer camp, whatever) you're going to be in much better shape. Just getting on the road to "head for the hills" is a recipe for disaster.

Contact with people necessary for work or for your or their safety; fine

Contact just to be reassured that they still love you and you love them; not fine. Waste of time

339 Best bugout kit is a passport & a private (foreign) brokerage account. A foreign passport would be even better, but that's a story for another day.

Did u know former Cong. Michelle Bachmann & her husband (& kids) have acquired dual Swiss & U.S. citizenship? She founded her own VERY successful tax accountancy firm in MN-- no fool she.

A digression, somewhat related: the easiest way, imo, for a conservative to win the Presidency is to get 60-65% of all white voters. That will do it. Traditionally, tho, extremely hard to do! RR was the last to do it, & Nixon the only other in recent times.

But... WHAT IF whites are beginning to vote as minority groups already vote, i.e., monolithically, BECAUSE whites correctly perceive that they ARE an embattled minority now?

Gamechanger, if voters can withstand the "you racist bastard!" heat. And heat there will be.

Some years ago, I wrote and sold a dystopian short fiction piece about how a county seat, after the collapse, became a sort of provincial capitol. Intrigues between the Sheriff and his men, the traders, and the local farmers.

Tolls are levied on goods passing thru; records of transactions maintained at the courthouse, which the sheriff has made into his new HQ. It was a lot of fun writing it.

420 It might be worth pointing out, since it seems to be largely forgotten, that there are a lot of different possibilities concerning what a collapse would look like, and only a few involve angry/hungry mobs. A very likely scenario is something similar to what happened in Argentina, in which society did not completely collapse, but life got a lot, lot harder and more dangerous, particularly for the poor, as outlined here:

Not very fun to contemplate, either, which is why most of us end up planning for the zombies. I suspect that I lot of us prepper types are romantics at heart - I know I am - and it is difficult to picture oneself as heroic under the circumstances he describes.

Of course, nothing says that there is going to be only one collapse - a long slow decline, interrupted by major disaster, followed by a partial recovery/stabilization and establishment of a (more) totalitarian system, followed by more stagnation and ended (we hope) with more upheaval as the dictators are overthrown is one possible timeline. Which is why, IMHO. it is unwise to get stuck preparing for one particular scenario...

Yeah I wish we didn't have to sell, but it's part of an estate, and since Grandpa is dead, someone has to buy everybody else out. The family members involved either don't have the cash or don't want the work. I don't want the work. Apparently my kids are just as poor and lazy as I am so I guess we stick up a sign. Posted by: irongrampa at January 09, 2016 09:10 PM (jeCnD)

488 Chemjeff, here's my recommendation for starting out.

1. Determine what it is you want to be prepared for. Power outage for a few hours? Ice storm that takes down power a few weeks? Loss of job? Earthquake? Tornado? Economic collapse? That will determine how you prep.

2. Start small. Don't get overwhelmed. Build a "bug out bag." Just because you have it doesn't mean your plan revolves around bugging out. For instance, if it's the middle of the night and the power is out, you'll know where to find it and its contents, as opposed to stumbling around through the house in the dark trying to locate the candles, the matches, a flashlight, batteries, or that crankup weather radio.

3. Gameplan. Wargame. Run scenarios through your head (but don't get carried away; keep it realistic).

For instance:
-If a train derails with HAZMAT near your home, what are you going to do? Where will you go? What will you need for the next few days until you can come home?
-If you lose your job, how long can you hold out until you find new employment? Remember, just because it doesn't affect the entire community en masse doesn't mean it's not an emergency or a disaster on a personal level. I know several preppers that were able to keep their family well fed in for several months in between jobs precisely because they had stocks of food squirreled away.

Just some things to think about.

"Prepping" doesn't necessarily mean that you are expecting civil war or SMOD.

Start small and work up from there. What is the minimum you'll need for a few days in the aftermath of a hurricane, tornado, or earthquake? In the northeast, ice storms can cause power outages that last for days or even weeks.

In that case, here's what I'd do (YMMV):

1) Turn off the power in your house for a day or two. Seriously. Have a notebook handy and write down everything that the loss of power affects (food in the fridge/freezer, lighting, heating/cooling, cooking, news sources, entertainment (very important if you have kids), etc. Then you can begin to prepare for those issues.

2) Once you've done that, try it again, but this time turn off the water, too. Go through the same process. Same thing if your home uses natural gas.

3) Have the bugout bag ready in case something happens that makes your home uninhabitable.

That's right. Prepping also means that you live in a country that is systematically destroying its ability to generate and distribute power. Two years ago, during that storm on the east coast, our electricity was out for 4 days.

I remember when I was growing up the electricity would only go out if an apocalyptic storm went on for days, and even then the electric would only be out for a few hours. Now, when the wind blows the wrong way the electricity goes out and who knows when it's coming back on. It's like living in the third world. And the lefties and Indonesians are still trying to do away with what little power generation is left and to make the power grid more brittle every day.

Through there, a vestibule, and a residential door. Behind that, a lovely two bedroom, one and a half bath apartment built within the structure. Utterly invisible..been here for two years, and nobody has the slightest clue I'm here.

I had a co-worker who told me about being a refugee on the boats out of Viet Nam, being shaken down by pirates and losing everything in the refugee camps.

So, when do you think is the right time to refugee out? You postin' from Chile?

My angel and her family were 'boat people,' too.

They were fortunate, able to avoid pirates and what-not. Most were not.

I agree with you.

If you go on the internet, and you live in state where you can't be anonymous they advise you put the ticket in a safety deposit box and take as long as possible to claim it-such as almost up to a year so that all the iharrassment dies down. I said to the spouse Id be horrified to win that huge of an amount; My greedy self would be perfectly happy with one million. ;^)

642 There was a couple the first church I served who won the lottery; I can't recall if it was 5 or 7 million because it happened before I got there. It made the woman more financially comfortable, but I don't think it made her happier. Her husband divorced her for a newer younger model. I don't even know if he married the new woman and she told me at some point, "I'm not sure now if people want to be my friend because of the money or other reasons.

One thing that always made me laugh to myself was that she put in the same amount of money to the collection-which was much less than some older people who hadn't won the lottery gave) When I gave her some suggestions of how she could help people with the money or help the church she didn't do anything. The church was having a spaghetti dinner as a fund raiser and she said, "I always think it means more when you have to work for the money. " It was on the tip of my tongue to say, "Yes; I'm sure it was a lot of work going down to the Wawa and plunking down four dollars for lottery tickets but I restrained myself.

652 Until last summer, I didn't know that National Weather Service 'severe weather alerts' will override the 'silent' or 'vibrate' function on cell phones and make them ring out loud. How did I find out? I was seeing Tartuffe at the Shakespeare Theatre of D.C. with hundreds of other people when 20, 30, 40, 50 cellphones in the audience went off and kept going off until intermission, which was fortunately only about 10 minutes later. Totally wrecked the experience, and the place has picture windows in the lobby, so anyone who was even thinking of going outside would have known that the rain was coming down in buckets. My phone didn't go off, because I had turned it completely off, but apparently all the customers whose phones were on 'silent' or 'vibrate' did go off. Whether this feature can be disabled, I do not know. If the 'severe weather emergency' had been a tornado within 5 miles of the theater, or a nuclear strike, it might have been justified, but heavy rains? I concluded then that the cellphone manufacturers and the NWS were combining to act like one gigantic asshole.

Since then, I've made a point of mentioning this to house managers of theatres whenever I run into one. (I go to a lot of plays, and the house manager is usually an alert but bored-looking person hanging out in the lobby at intermission in front of a door marked 'private'.) The one at the Stratford Festival in Canada said he thought that was an American thing, but didn't know for sure. I wouldn't be surprised if they do that in Canada, too - or will start doing it, now that Mini-Trudeau is in power.
