A Perfect Thread to Chat In While You're Not Watching Obama's "Town Hall" With Hand-Picked Invite-Only Political Plants

I plan on watching like, 0-2 minutes of this.

We'll talk about it on the podcast but I doubt anyone will watch more than 0-2 minutes. We'll speculate about the sorts of things we guess they might have said.

And the "town hall" is nothing of the sort -- it's a staged propaganda session in which Anderson Cooper is an eager participant.

There are no tickets available to people who are not specifically invited to the event.

"This is an invitation-only event. No tickets are available," the memo states. "The event is not open to the public."

That's not a town hall, that's a Potemkin Village Meet-and-Greet.

The coordinated Obama/CNN propaganda pageant begins at 8pm Eastern.

On Twitter, some question why CNN hasn't invited anyone who's ever used a gun to save his own life -- like, for example, former CNN reporters Chuck de Caro and Lynne Russell, who fended off an attack in their hotel last year with a gun.

Maybe CNN forgot what their phone numbers are. Or that they exist.

28 The Norks did not make an "H-bomb", you know a fusion device, thermonuclear device. That test was just a "regular" fission bomb. We've got a network of sophisticated seismic monitors that can detect underground nuclear explosions. The seismic signature of a nuke is pretty unique, and you can glean a lot of details about it from that alone.

And then, radionuclide "sniffing" of what leaks out into atmosphere pretty much completes the picture.

Right now, we, the Russkies, the other Western "powers" (such as they are now, of course) and likely Japan and some others know all about what the Norks detonated.

How much they tell us is another story.

Panic on the dance floor:

An email sent to the George Mason Universitys internal listserv advises students of the possibility of armed protesters outside President Obamas town hall at the university this evening. The email, sent by Thomas Longo, the interim chief of police at the university, points out that it is lawful to carry firearms on public outdoor spaces on the campus in Virginia, though Longo does not identify any specific groups planning an armed protest.

Virginia is one of dozens of states where it is legal for people aged 18 and over to openly carry a handgun in public without a license or permit except where prohibited by statute.

Longo added that while it is lawful to openly carry firearms in public outdoor spaces on the George Mason campus, that right is not extended to students, faculty and staff, according to university policy.

45 Ah, the lotteries. You know, Don Corleone and the boys never skimmed anywhere near as much off the top of the pot in their "numbers racket" as the government does.

Gambling, for a "fair game" is a zero sum game. To make it pay, you've got to rig the odds in your favor a little bit, which is what all casinos do. It becomes thus a positive sum game for them, and a negative sum game for the gamblers.

The state's "share" of the lottery far exceeds what any casino and even the mob ever took out of any pot.

It's truly a tax on the stupid.

334 So, this past Monday I had to take my daughter to YET ANOTHER emergency orthodontist appointment before school in town here (by the way, don't get regular braces for a kid who plays a mouthguard-sport yearround).

As we neared the office, we passed a little Friends school, then a pretty little park, with swings. There was a man on the swings. SWINGING. A suicide. A group of students was nearby waiting for their bus.

My friend is a cop; he said this happens all the time. So somehow, people killing themselves by wrapping their necks in a child's swing and then jumping, sure to be seen by children later, is better than them using a gun to just shoot themselves?

Not seeing it. I think it's over three quarters of the "gun deaths" stats are suicides, correct? I thought progs were super-into people "choosing to die." What's wrong with privacy and efficiency in that regard?

You say that as though it were a bad thing. Since state lottos are ostensibly intended to fund projects that might otherwise see demand to be funded by tax dollars, why not tax the stupid to pay for them? Letting stupid people have too much money is bad public policy. You and I can buy out one $2 ticket to get in the game, and enjoy substantially the same chance of winning (i.e. not quite zero) as the bozos who buy hundreds of dollars' worth. What's not to like?

To most reasonable people, a government department's job is to provide a particular service or expertise, either to constituents or to other government departments.

To the left, it's a platform for advancing personal or party agendas.

To them it makes no sense to have power and not use it, the only abuse of power in their eyes is to take it away from them.

In fairness, it does. Homicide, just from its etymology, means the killing of a person by a person. If you think about it, it makes sense. Someone kills someone else. The state calls in the homicide squad to determine the nature of that killing, which could perfectly be justifiable homicide, and to determine whether a crime was committed. It's not always obvious whether that's the case or not.

590 535 Every suicide is investigated initially as a homicide until they can rule out murder by others
Posted by: ThunderB at January 07, 2016 09:20 PM (zOTsN)

Every suicide IS a homicide. Not all homicides are murders, contrary to common opinion. Every homicide is investigated to determine further whether the homicide is a murder, a suicide, manslaughter, justifiable homicide (e.g., self-defense), whatever.

Homicide is a statement of fact: a person is dead, and a person is thought to have been responsible. Could be the same person - suicide - could be someone else - murder, manslaughter, or justifiable homicide. That's what the investigation is to determine.

667 >> All of us down at the Brattleboro Women's Reproductive Health Clinic

Mary, I have a question I hope you can provide some insight toward.

Women's Reproductive Health Clinic focus on human reproductive systems, specifically those of women, correct? As a male, and possessing technical proclivities and thought patterns intersecting with geek, while I have had significantly less first-hand experience with these systems over the years than I would have preferred, my understanding is that these systems are optimized for reproduction. Given that, why do so many of these "reproductive health clinics" primarily seem to concern themselves with interfering with the successful conclusion those systems are designed to provide? The name doesn't make sense.

Thank you in advance.

Anyone with any economic sense show know that at first blush, but this was a scholarly treatise proving it. In fact, the price would've increased a tad bit more than it did, but they found some other factors that tended to lower the price over the same period.

The Reds always quote overall statistics for gun-related homicides, and conveniently forget to break out the statistics as above.

Bottom line: but for gangbangers, the U.S. wouldn't be noteworthy for gun violence. Note also that gang membership is ca. 10% white (again, from memory).

689 "On a lighter note, what the hell is up with The Ad Council, recently?"

The last Ad Council piece I heard on the radio was one which claimed (cue sad music) that "one in five" children in America suffers from chronic hunger.

I hit the roof.

Schools are not serving not just free lunches, but free _breakfasts_ to all comers? And the schools are opening their cafeterias on what are normally out-of-school vacation days as well? For breakfast and lunch?

On top of _record_ food stamp expenditure?

And on top of absolutely explosive growth in benefits to low-income families for things like housing and electricity and communications, which should free up more of their budgets for food?

And with huge percentages of the "poor" clinically obese?

If with all that we still have 20% of American kids experiencing chronic hunger, then every single person in the social-work bureaucracy needs to be relieved of duty permanently and sent to the Antarctic to count penguins, and never brought back here.

My magic sinus potion is this (will try tomorrow, I guess, maybe laced with vodka): 1 cup warmed spicy V8 (one minute in microwave), add dash Tabasco and minced 1 clove garlic. Swig down. Breathe well in about an hour. The tomato juice "sort of" disguises the garlic breath (so I like to think), like tomato juice bath for a dog meets skunk? If it were a "bad" sinus infection I would drink turpentine if someone told me it would help.

I am a nurse and the biggest neurotic (about myself, advise others ALL THE TIME to go to doctor). Me, not so much. Yearly visit and am done, leave me alone. My new doc may see me by next week. i guess he will think, early on, that I am nuts. oh, yay!

Hello, Sweetie!

Just out of curiosity, did you ever have times when you had a woman have trouble lifting a piece of a tank or a guy have a problem getting something aligned properly and think, "bite my tongue -- gotta salute PC".....or did you drill the ever-loving shit out of 'em so it wasn't an issue? (specifically, drills on "either one of you lifting 100 pounds should use a hoist, cretin" or "you're eyeballing that? Ever heard of jigs?")

770 AOP, didn't Canuckistan just recently (past few years), finally, junk the long gun registry after several decades? And the Mounties reported that such registry had actually been material to solving or prosecuting a case exactly .... ZERO times? Have I got that right?

And a moron here recently reported, I think, that MD has finally abandoned its own stupid fired-cartridge registry/library, and in that case two not a single case was broken or based primarily on said data?

Posted by: rhomboid at January 07, 2016 09:37 PM (QDnY+)

Yes, the previous Conservative government finally shit-canned the long-gun registry, which, AFAIK, solved no murders during its existence. And few of its apologists ever claimed that it did, so its near-zero batting average must have been such an un-assailable fact that they knew better than to try and bullshit us.

Now that The Spawn is PM, it would not surprise me to see the gun registry re-enacted, or some even more intrusive anti-gun legislation.

818 In Canada, handguns are verboten, unless you can prove you are in grave danger and deserve to carry.

Rifles and shotguns are the other matter.

Posted by: Vendette at January 07, 2016 09:44 PM (yCwFB)

Not so. I need a PAL (possession and acquistion license) to buy or own any firearm (other than a prescribed antique firearm). There's one PAL for long guns, and a "restricted" PAL for handguns (and, I believe, some military-style semi-auto rifles). Any person not a felon or under a mental health order can take the course, and get one. Involves a background check. I know several friends with legal handguns; one guy is a raging liberal who shoots a Tokarev at the range.

But the only "approved" purposes for owning a handgun are "collector" and "target shooting at approved ranges". "Self-defense" is not an "approved" reason, and you would be denied if you asked for a permit on that basis. But armored-car crew can carry, with special permits, and there are a few (very few) people who have been given concealed-carry permits because of explicit threats against them.

Hate to admit it, but here goes: I'm having similar thoughts. About 60% of my brain is still saying "Trump??? Really??" And then I look at how effective he's being (hat tip to Scott Adams for that), and I think about how I'm all used to evaluating candidates by their coherent philosophy, which he fails, but...maybe the working class types flocking to his banner have a point.

Then, too, I think of Hillary ripping Rubio to shreds, as Schumer did, and then I think of her going up against Trump...

It is a pleasing image. No conclusions yet, just contemplation of that pleasing image.

With long guns, since they are not currently registered, buyer and seller get together, buyer forks over money, and seller forks over the gun. Now, seller is supposed to check if buyer has a valid PAL for the class of firearm in question, but I don't know how a gun's history could be traced, lacking registration paper trail.

Handguns have been in a registry since 1934, so I presume there would have to be change-of-registry documents filed. Never bught one, so don't know. If I was interested in getting an illegal handgun, I'd go to a bar frequented by Indians, settle in, and start buying rounds, and work the conversation around to handguns. Don't want to seem too eager, they mistake me for an undercover cop...

They carried carboys of Sulfuric acid on the off chance that might work in a pinch.

That one-in-a-million chance where you would otherwise say, "hey, I wish I had 20 Imperial gallons of Sulfuric acid right now"

It's that moment where you glare at your spouse and say, "Pork, Chicken and Rat, is that all you can cook?"

Meh...
I was a drunken thief. If it weren't for Our Lord and Savior Jesus
Christ? I would have been back many times. I didn't even live in a "bad
neighborhood". Affluenza, perhaps? ...lol.

Naw... just stupidity. And I was a good student until I was in my senior year of high school.

...you never know about kids. They can turn into idiots so freaking suddenly.
If it weren't for my sainted parents and the tears in my eyes when I
had to face them from behind the glass? Sitting across a table on
"visiting day"?

...you'd best find something other than what you're doing.

D.U.I.,
Driving Under Suspension and Assault will get you into County Jail
faster than you can say, "I'm All Growed-Up and I Know All of the
Things!"
