Obama: Trump Is Exploiting Working-Class Fears

Obama's eternal political algorithm runs like this: He ruthlessly exploits the fears and paranoias that animate his own voters -- Muslim "backlash," cop shootings which occur something like one in one thousand arrests, global warming that hasn't been happening for 17 years, mass shootings in an age when gun violence and murder is down substantially.

But when someone else talks about issues -- terrorism, Iran, declining wages, society becoming more hostile to conventional religion, the uncontrolled border and the implications of that for our economy, security, and political equilibrium -- those are just some phantasmal "fears" which are being cynically "exploited" by crafty politicians who know how to stoke the lizard brain bigotries of dumb people.

He is ghastly. He is also stupid and unselfreflecting, because I bet you what I've said has never even occurred to him as something he needs to justify to himself.

President Obama said in a radio interview airing on Monday that Donald J. Trump, a leading contender for the Republican presidential nomination, is exploiting the resentment and anxieties of working-class men to boost his campaign. Mr. Obama also argued that some of the scorn directed at him personally stems from the fact that he is the first African-American to hold the White House.

Demographic changes and economic stresses, including "flatlining" wages and incomes, have meant that"“particularly blue-collar men have had a lot of trouble in this new economy, where they are no longer getting the same bargain that they got when they were going to a factory and able to support their families on a single paycheck," Mr. Obama said in the interview with National Public Radio.

"You combine those things, and it means that there is going to be potential anger, frustration, fear -- some of it justified, but just misdirected," the president added. "I think somebody like Mr. Trump is taking advantage of that. That's what he’s exploiting during the course of his campaign."

...

In the wide-ranging interview, conducted the day before he left Washington on Friday for a two-week holiday vacation with his family in Hawaii, Mr. Obama defended his approach to taking on the Islamic State. He dismissed the notion that the militant group is an existential threat to the United States even as he conceded that he had received "legitimate criticism" for failing to adequately explain his strategy for confronting it.

He "even" conceded he hadn't adequately explained his strategy? That's the only thing he's comfortable conceding -- every failure he's had, and there's been quite a few, has been later "admitted" to have been a failure to explain how awesome he's actually doing.

He also described his view of the anxiety on which Mr. Trump has capitalized, arguing that some voters who voice fears about his presidency and doubts about where Mr. Obama’s loyalties lie are reacting to the fact that he is the first black president.

"If you are referring to specific strains in the Republican Party that suggest that somehow I'm different, I'm Muslim, I'm disloyal to the country, etc. -- which unfortunately is pretty far out there, and gets some traction in certain pockets of the Republican Party, and that have been articulated by some of their elected officials -- what I'd say there is that that’s probably pretty specific to me, and who I am and my background," Mr. Obama told Steve Inskeep, the host of "Morning Edition" on NPR. "In some ways, I may represent change that worries them."

As Drudge notes, this is Obama playing -- get this -- the race card himself. Again.

"That's not to suggest that everybody who objects to my policies may not have perfectly good reasons for it," the president added. He noted, as an example, that voters living in coal-dependent areas may blame him for the loss of their jobs.

Yes you are trying to suggest just that -- which is why you go this wooby every single time you fail and get large doses of public criticism, which is, again, frequently.

Yeah, this new economy violates at least two laws of physics: it both sucks and blows.

And WTF is this "bargain" bullshit? Yeah, you and the rest of your anti-American, anti-capitalist imbeciles have screwed up what was once a great economy where a man could provide for his family all by himself. Nowadays, both spousal units are forced to work just to keep up with their rapidly eroding buying power.

And you just know he's proud of that accomplishment.

92 Barry has made, and is still making I think, one really fucking colossal mistake ...

... Barry preaches about a backlash he doesn't believe will occur, against a constant level of violence he permits committed by demographics he encourages and protects, all in an attempt to create a pretext for the expansion of power he covets.

Problem being ... He's lighting the fuse on an actual damn backlash that he can't stop. And that movement is going to eliminate all tolerance for much of the shit that enabled Obama and his supporters in the first place.

And what about Mother-in-Law? Does she still get carted along on our dime? The days are long gone when those two girls needed a babysitter, which is why they ostensibly have her living with them. Doesn't MIL have any friends she'd like to see in Chicago? Maybe drop in on her "church friends" for Christmas? If they aren't using their Lincoln Park home they should donate it to the poor.

101 "He dismissed the notion that the militant group is an existential threat to the United States"

This particular language didn't originate with Obama. As near as I'm able to determine, it was Joey Choo-Choo, in between bites from the paste pot, who first said proudly that the Islamic State "does not pose an existential threat" to the USA.

Obama's communications people apparently liked that turn of phrase, and started to insert it into Obama's talking points and cue cards.

It is of course one of the most ridiculous in a very long line of ridiculous strawman arguments to have come out of this administration.

Of course they're not an "existential threat". But A THREAT NEED NOT BE EXISTENTIAL to be important and to require a tough, forceful, urgent response. The Islamic State types can't destroy America, but they sure can kill a lot of Americans, and in case it had escaped attention, they did exactly that only a few weeks ago, and they liked it a lot, and would be pleased to repeat the performance at their first opportunity.

It's is appalling disengagement from the office he in which he squats to defecate on his oath of office. The first and most important duty of a President is to protect America and her interests. Not once has he done so. In fact if one were to do a chart with the correct thing to do to keep America safe and the wrong thing, it would be a chart of Bobo's policies and EOs. He is an active menace.

Once those 200,000 strapping Syrian lads get here and begin to do their dirty work for jihad, it will be a wake up call for a lot of folks who are still ignoring this ignorant mendacious monster. San Bernadino, Merced, Chattanooga, Oklahoma City, etc, were bad, very bad, but, they are just the opening rounds in the bloodbath that Bobo is sanctimoniously importing in the person of able bodied men who should be fighting in Syria against ISIS, but, since they are ISIS, they are here to slaughter and wound us.

Where you were officially assigned a specific store at which you would be compelled to shop, based on your address. A store run, badly and expensively, by government employees.

Of course, if we really did have that system, anyone who dared to question its sense or suggest alternatives would be met with howls of derision.

160 That "blue collar" language was anything but accidental. He despises the working class. He despises working class blacks even more than whites... traitors to him and his idiot gang.

The working class is their baseline grievance, and they're grievance mongers. Their ideology feeds on bitterness and grievance. The bitter and envious EXCEL in their world... that's why he always, constantly talks about it. It's what his world is based on.

161 I had an epiphany at work this week that applies here.

162 The best metaphor I have found for critiquing the
unionized public schools is to ask people to imagine a world in which
grocery stores operated the same way. Where you were officially assigned
a specific store at which you would be compelled to shop, based on your
address. A store run, badly and expensively, by government employees.

Of
course, if we really did have that system, anyone who dared to question
its sense or suggest alternatives would be met with howls of derision.

You're OPPOSED TO SHOPPING. You HATE GROCERIES. You're a VICIOUS MISANTHROPE WHO WANTS FOR PEOPLE TO STARVE.

Nor are they fond of reading much of anything else, either. They are however demonstrably fond of gay-bashing, wife-beating, knocking up teenagers, dogfighting, cockfighting, driving while blind drunk, poaching, and draining dirty motor oil out of their beater cars straight into grates labeled "NO DUMPING, FLOWS TO BAY".

231 The other thing that liberals didn't really think through about the mass importation of brown people from south of the border (who liberals thought would slot in smoothly to their voting coalition) is that brown people from south of the border _do not much like nor get along with_ another part of the liberal voting coalition. Blacks.

There are neighborhoods in SoCal which were once either majority black or with strong black admixtures which have become informal "sundown towns". Hell, some of them are 24-hour sundown towns. Blacks NOT WELCOME. I've heard the phrase "ethnic cleansing" used to describe the process, and while it hasn't turned into Srebrenica yet, it might one day do that.

Also: cushy make-work government jobs. The Post Office in SoCal employs a disproportionately large number of blacks, relative to the number of blacks in the hiring catchment area, thanks to affirmative action. Except now, Pedro and Maria, who also qualify as AA hires, want their own piece of the postal-job action, and they don't care how many blacks get bumped to make room for them in the organizational chart.

Maybe, I think Hillary has the potential to almost turn off more women voters than a male Democrat, but Trump is sort of a fun throwback where a guy could call a broad out and his young foreign mail order bride that looks like a supermodel could turn women off that would normally support his positions.

Don't know, but he has the male vote locked down.

Bottom line, women make stupid voting decisions.

Certainly.

Here's it is with recommendations for the liquors (which you don't have to take all that seriously:

Rittenhouse rye is a good choice
Jamaican rum you need for the awesome flava so try Hamilton Pot Still Black Rum or get Smith & Cross (it's much easier to find)
The sherry should be a sweeter one.

Ugh. Pixyware sux. I can't simply cut and paste, so:

1 qt cream
1 qt milk
12 tbs sugar
12 eggs
1 pint brandy
1/2 pint rye whisky
1/2 pint Jamaican rum
1/4 pint sherry

These are George Washington's directions:

"Mix liquor first, then separate yolks and whites of eggs, add sugar to beaten yolks, mix well.
Add milk and cream, slowly beating. Beat whites of eggs until stiff and fold slowly into mixture. Let set in cool place for several days. Taste frequently."

Sorry about the delay. Work I must.

and as a reminder Pixyware sux.

working class = invalid concerns

Which is Orwellian as all get out isn't it. Because the working class are a lot closer to REALITY than those who can afford to distract themselves with Star Wars and other frivolities.

Everyone "guesses" teh Donald will do this or that. Usually, it's someone who doesn't like him and "guesses" he'll do something really reprehensible.

I have a feeling he'll do what he says he'll do. That's something a successful businessman learns early. Which may be why a lot of successful business-types haven't made it in politics.

My wife would get the stink eye from the commissary cows whenever she would go grocery shopping on base.

The same people who are wailing about ISIS now are the same people who were petrified about the imminent Ebola epidemic. And look how that was resolved. Not by fear, but by rational, measured judgment.

The media plays to your fear people. ISIS is not an existential threat to America. How many people have actually been killed from terrorist attacks on US soil since 9/11? Compare that to how many deaths caused by Americans shooting up schools and movie theaters and other acts of violence in inner city neighborhoods. Thousands. And how many deaths caused by heart disease and cancer? Millions. Look at those numbers and should you really be worried about ISIS?

He's certainly not a practicing Muslim.

Has he made healthcare worse....NO
Has he made climate change worse by ignoring it....NO
Has he made race relations work because bigots like you can't deal with the fact that a Black man is in the white house....NO

Can Barack Obama be impeached for the damages he has done?
Assuming there was damage, which you cannot seem to name, no.

Why does Obama hate America?
He does not.

What did we as a country ever do to him?
We, as a Country, did nothing special to him that we did not do to every other man of color.

Why is Barack Obama an evil man?
No, this is not really true. He is a man who makes mistakes but does more good for the Country than most men.

Why Is Barack Obama destroying America?
Again,
assuming since you have make no attempt to pick out anything he is
personally responsible for that may be hurting the County, it would be
from simple, human error.

Is Barack Obama a Muslim?
No.

Why does Barack Obama hate America?
No.

Is Barack Obama an Traitor?
No.

Is Barack Obama a Communist?
No.

Why is Barack Obama a terrorist?
In
America, even though we have the largest military might in history and
send robots to kill individual people based on the political decisions
made thousands of miles away, we do not call ourselves terrorists. He is
the commander in chief and was legally elected to office in a
democracy. Any terror he causes comes from the will of the people.
